00:02It's trials night for the Goulburn Valley sons under 18s.
00:07There are 10 nations and 15 languages on this pitch.
00:11The kids' parents are factory workers, teachers, mechanics, nurses and engineers.
00:17In other places in Australia you see there's not really that much of a multicultural
00:22but here in Shepparton it's like very welcoming.
00:26Nearly one in five people in Shepparton were born overseas from more than a hundred different ancestries.
00:33Neha Samar started life in the slums of Mumbai before building a career and a family here.
00:38I love Shepparton. This is the place that has really welcomed me.
00:42But recently she had a chat with a friend and talk turned to the election.
00:46She tells me how excited she is about One Nation and she says that
00:50oh you know there's a big issue with immigration right now but Neha you're one of the good ones.
00:56I feel like it's really scary and I feel like these people have been around me and they feel like
01:02that about me.
01:03Federally Labor and the coalition have joined One Nation in promising to cut migrant numbers.
01:09But it's the minor parties rhetoric that has ethnic communities worried.
01:13But we must be monocultural.
01:16Victoria's ethnic communities council says this year for the first time racism was its members biggest concern.
01:24This talk of monoculturalism has been actually frightening for some and alienating for others.
01:30Some people have been you know find that they're being directly abused on the streets.
01:34People have gotten the agency of coming out more because they think that if the political leaders can speak freely
01:40about how they feel they can also say freely about how they feel.
01:45One Nation says more than a third of its Victorian members were born overseas including some of its candidates.
01:51I wouldn't mind to block One Nation if that's the option.
01:55Why not you know yeah we welcome like a different party you know.
01:59Nobody need fear of One Nation government.
02:01There's always going to be people that have concerns because they've maybe swallowed some of the previous prejudice or stigma
02:07associated with this party.
02:08Now we are trying to break down some of that stigma.
02:12Neha Samar says she'll keep working too.
02:14I'm here to stay and I'm going to be doing everything in my power to make sure that the next
02:21generation that grows up in this beautiful multicultural space not feel like they don't belong.
02:29So I'm here to stay and try to break down some of the older people.
02:30When we are getting so busy, it's just a bit of aiberian.
02:30So what we're getting so busy with these people.
02:30They're looking so busy, and so I'm going to be getting so busy and so.
02:30So what we're getting so busy and so that the people that we're getting so busy,
02:30are getting so busy, and so we're getting so busy, and so I'm gonna take great time sometimes.
