00:00I'm Pete Wicks, and I'm settling back into my time at the Dogs Trust.
00:09Oh, oh, yeah, okay, hold on.
00:11Come on, puppies.
00:12Hey, little baby pump.
00:14Help!
00:17It's already been tough.
00:19It's heartbreaking.
00:20Everything they've ever known has been ripped away from them.
00:22And this week is no different.
00:24She's had a lot of upheaval in her life.
00:27Every time I look at her, I just feel a bit sad for her.
00:30But me and the staff are here to help.
00:32Good boy.
00:33In any way we can.
00:35Just like this.
00:36Oh, look, it's nice.
00:39Because every dog deserves a second chance.
00:42Oh, you smell delightful.
00:44Ta-da!
00:46Wow.
00:48It's just been an amazing day.
00:51No day is ever the same for the team in Basildon.
01:01No.
01:02It's unpredictable.
01:04He's going to wee up you.
01:05Oh.
01:06It's messy.
01:09Cheers, mate.
01:11But ultimately, it's rewarding.
01:14This is going to be the best day of my life.
01:18Are you excited?
01:20And even though their number one priority is the dogs in their care,
01:24they're always ready to help people through difficult and heartbreaking decisions.
01:37Today, Michelle and her daughter, Isabel, have come to hand over their one-year-old child, Nugget.
01:43We got Nugget and Jeff siblings in October last year.
01:51They all seem to get along fine, and then Nugget started fighting with Jeff.
01:56So for the last eight weeks, we've been trying to keep them separate from each other.
02:02When they were fighting and we couldn't physically get them apart,
02:06we've got Isabel, who's 17, Bobby, who's nine, and Reggie, who's five.
02:12Obviously, we're worried in case one of the kids gets caught in the middle of the fight.
02:17Maybe I'm free-falling.
02:22Maybe I'm out of time.
02:26Tell me I'm worth something.
02:37Are you happy for me to take it now? Is that a worry?
02:40Yeah.
02:41Please, I've got to get up.
02:43We've got to get up.
02:44We've got to get up.
02:45Come here, let's just go.
02:46It's all right.
02:47We'll find her somewhere lovely.
02:48It's a really difficult thing, though.
02:49You know, you're doing the best thing.
02:50You're doing what's right for her, and it's not necessarily what's right for you.
02:52It's a really hard thing to do.
02:54We look after her, though.
02:55Don't worry.
02:56Don't worry.
02:57Right, I'm going to take it now, okay?
02:59Take care of yourself.
03:00See you later.
03:01See you later.
03:02See you later.
03:03See you later.
03:04We're getting năm.
03:05I'm happy.
03:06Bye.
03:07Bye.
03:09Perfect.
03:10Well, be with I'm out of time.
03:11Peace.
03:12ودnet, уд salary from fingers.
03:15Not necessarily what's right for you.
03:16Yeah.
03:17It's a really hard thing to do.
03:18With a card, I'm not worried.
03:20Right, I'm gonna take it now, OK?
03:22Don't you tell me?
03:24Don't you tell me?
03:26Don't you tell me?
03:38Don't you tell me?
03:46You know, Gip, it's just hard isn't it?
03:48Even if you know that, for the right reasons, it's not nice.
04:04As Nugget is clearly anxious, Behaviour Officer Destin has been drafted in to bring her for her health check with Vet Vanessa and Nurse Charlotte.
04:14This is Nugget. She's a little bit scared at the minute.
04:16Are you worried? She's beautiful.
04:18She's a bit nervous.
04:20She is a little bit nervous, yeah.
04:21She's got a lovely face.
04:23So, is this a first initial kind of Vet check then, yeah?
04:26So, this is the first time she's seen a Vet.
04:28Yeah.
04:29So, Vanessa's just going to have a little look.
04:31How old is she?
04:33Just coming up to a year.
04:34Oh, she's a baby.
04:36Oh, you're a baby floof.
04:38I mean, visually, she looks fine.
04:40Give her a little groom once she's a bit more settled in.
04:43But there's nothing there that's going to be affecting her welfare at the minute.
04:46Oh, well, that's good news.
04:48You're okay.
04:50Vanessa wants to listen to her heart, but Nugget seems very wary.
04:54No, she doesn't know, thank you.
04:56Not today.
04:57As you can see, she's very head shy.
04:59You can see she's backing up and everything there.
05:02So, I don't want to push her so we can let her settle in first
05:05to make it a little bit easier for her.
05:07So, first and foremost, is just try and get her as comfortable as possible and...
05:10Yeah.
05:11The behaviour team will work with her.
05:13You know, some of them are really resilient and really happy to be handled
05:17and others are just a wee bit more nervous.
05:19It takes time and there's so many dogs and so many different smells
05:23and there's just so much going on that can be just too much.
05:26Okay.
05:27Oh, you're off then, Nugget.
05:29Bye, Nugget.
05:30You like her.
05:32I like her.
05:33She's very fluffy.
05:35Bye, Nugget.
05:57Bye.
05:58Bye.
06:00Behaviour Officer Ross and re-homing coordinator Zoe
06:03are assessing five of the boys.
06:07Hello, mate. How are you?
06:09Yeah, good, yeah. Can I come in?
06:10Absolutely. Come on in.
06:12Oh, I'm obsessed already.
06:15They keep our lives busy.
06:17Oh, lovely. You've enjoyed that, mate.
06:20That's nice, isn't it? Typical Maddy.
06:21We've got plenty of toys here.
06:23Plenty of toys. You don't need my arm.
06:25The puppies were born at the centre six weeks ago
06:28after their heavily pregnant mum,
06:30was handed over by her owners
06:31who were unable to care for such a large litter.
06:35Do we have names for them all?
06:36This is Santino. Santino.
06:39Blue collar. That's Cosy.
06:40Cosy. That one's Hunter.
06:42Hunter. This is a green collar.
06:44That's Charlie. Charlie.
06:46And a yellow one. And that's Lint.
06:48Lint. Yeah. Yeah, like the chocolate.
06:50Like the chocolate. Got you. Love it.
06:53Oh, you're so cute.
06:55So what are we doing with him today?
06:57So today we're looking at if they're suitable
06:59to be essentially a service dog.
07:00Are there people that are looking for service dogs at the minute?
07:03Yeah, so we're sort of in conversation with Manchester Police.
07:06Okay, amazing.
07:06So they're after two boys.
07:08Two boys.
07:08So we're doing sort of an early assessment
07:10to just see if they're suitable
07:12to be in that sort of environment.
07:14And how do you know what's going to make a good working dog
07:16when they're so young?
07:16So you're looking for, like, an aura of confidence.
07:19Dogs that are willing to sort of throw themselves
07:22in the deep end, essentially.
07:23Dogs that have that little bit of drive.
07:25Do it.
07:26Will you shush me?
07:28Yeah.
07:29Who's the bully?
07:30Is it you?
07:31Yeah.
07:33Rough play is normal behaviour
07:34and important as it helps puppies learn social cues
07:38by inhibition and boundaries with other dogs.
07:42So do we start a little assessment now?
07:44We're constantly assessing while we're sort of watching them.
07:46What have you noticed so far, then?
07:48What have you noticed?
07:49Well, I want to get you to notice.
07:52Okay.
07:52All right.
07:53I mean, in my expert opinion...
07:55Yeah.
07:55Obviously, because I'm very good at picking
07:57Malinois for potential service dogs.
08:00There's a couple that have stood out a little bit.
08:03Lynx seems very confident.
08:04He seems like the kind of boss of this little five here,
08:08by the looks of it.
08:09Charlie, the green collar, would be my other choice
08:12because he, again, seems the most interesting,
08:14seems quite lively, very confident.
08:16So Lynx and Charlie, I think, are the most outgoing.
08:22And do you want a job here?
08:23Because those are the two we're exactly...
08:25Are they actually?
08:25Yeah.
08:25Are they actually?
08:26Yeah.
08:27Oh, look at me.
08:28Do you know what I mean?
08:29You can do my job and I'll go out.
08:31Do you know what I mean?
08:31Just unbelievable.
08:33What do you think?
08:34Do you want to be a police dog?
08:36Yeah?
08:37That's a yes.
08:38Yeah, I mean, yeah.
08:39Oh, yeah, definitely.
08:40Police dog.
08:41So these are our two police dogs, potentially.
08:44As picked by yourself.
08:45What do you think?
08:46Yeah, I know.
08:47Yeah.
08:47You're going to protect and serve.
08:49Yes, you are.
08:54The team will keep working on socialising Charlie and Lynx
08:58whilst they wait for the police to come and check them out.
09:01But if confidence is what they're after,
09:03I don't think they'll be disappointed.
09:05They'll be in contact with them.
09:15Back in Basildon...
09:16All right, Vanessa?
09:18Are you getting on? Yeah, I'm all right.
09:20We've had a report of a problem with Nugget.
09:23You remember Nugget before? Ciao.
09:25They said that she's just gone very lame on one of her legs.
09:28OK. Because she's a bit nervous.
09:31We don't want to be overwhelming her.
09:33So we're just using this opportunity for her to go out to the toilet
09:36and we're going to have a look and see if there's anything very obvious going on.
09:40OK. Well, here she comes.
09:42After initially appearing fine, Nugget seems to have injured herself
09:46and is now limping.
09:49What are you looking for?
09:51You can see that she's quite lame on that right-hand leg.
09:53She's offloading onto the left leg, so she's putting more weight on the left.
09:57And what sort of thing could that be? What could have potentially caused the lameness?
10:00So it could just be a soft tissue injury.
10:02It's quite easy for them just to twist their little legs.
10:05The other thing would be the knee ligaments.
10:08You can see she's quite lame there.
10:11If it's the knee ligament itself, surgery is going to be the better option.
10:15OK.
10:16What we'll do is we'll get her some pain relief for this evening.
10:19I'm going to book her in for a check in the vet suite tomorrow
10:21so we can have a look at the leg and see what's going on.
10:24The next day, Nugget isn't any better.
10:27Vet James tries to get a closer look.
10:30Well done, darling.
10:31Good girl, good girl.
10:33That was a tiny bit of movement, but just feels a bit more swollen on that side of it.
10:38But I think, yeah, we should have her in a sedator and get some x-rays.
10:42All done?
10:43Yeah.
10:44Sorry, little one.
10:45X-rays.
10:46Yeah, she's not happy with that leg.
10:49Nugget is such a lovely dog and I think because she's so chilled, you kind of forget she's only a year old.
10:53She's only a baby.
10:55She's had a lot of upheaval in her life.
10:57Every time I look at her, I just feel a bit sad for her.
11:00I think it's going to be a long road for Nugget.
11:14At the offsite vets, Nugget is arriving for her x-rays.
11:21Come on then.
11:22There we go.
11:23We've sedated her and we're going to take some x-rays of her back legs
11:28and just have a good feel of it while she's asleep as well.
11:31I think it's the right we're most worried about.
11:40Once the x-rays have been taken...
11:42All right.
11:43..and while Nugget is still sedated,
11:46James is able to have a proper feel of her leg and knee.
11:49It feels a bit loose, doesn't it?
11:51OK.
11:52You can see there's quite a bit of movement for her.
11:56So the cruciate should stop that from happening.
11:59That's not good news.
12:00The cruciate ligament should hold the knee in place.
12:03The movement could indicate Nugget has damaged hers.
12:07The cruciate ligament sorts it across here
12:09and they stop the knee from doing this.
12:11So there is more movement than you'd expect in the right leg.
12:14So it does look like she's damaged the cruciate.
12:17So surgery is probably the best option for her.
12:20So we sort of change the shape of the bone here.
12:22So we take a bit of bone off here and put a plate on
12:25and that helps hold it all together.
12:27It's a major surgery with a long recovery process.
12:31This is not the news anyone was hoping for.
12:34Every month, hundreds of new dogs arrive at the charity's 22 centres.
12:49Whilst most find a loving home relatively quickly,
12:53some need a bit more support.
12:55And although it's possible for them to be rehomed,
12:57it's not going to happen quickly.
12:59So they become special dogs where members of the public
13:04can help contribute towards the cost of their care.
13:07And in return they get photos and updates
13:11from their chosen sponsor dog.
13:14Over in Wales, dog welfare assistant Rhys...
13:17Good boy!
13:18..is preparing to say goodbye to their sponsor dog, Tetley,
13:22who's been at the Bridge End Rehoming Centre for nearly six years.
13:26Tetley came in to us quite young,
13:28around eight to ten weeks old, with injuries,
13:31and had to have his back right leg removed.
13:33He's doing really well, bless him.
13:35He's really, really charismatic, loves playing with toys.
13:38He will do anything for a treat.
13:40He's being transferred from here at Bridge End to Basildon Centre this week,
13:45as he will have a larger kennel and his own garden
13:48and better facilities than we can offer for him here at the moment.
13:53Behaviour officers Jordan and Destin from Basildon
13:56have come to find out a little bit more about him
13:59to help smooth his transition.
14:02Hi, guys. Hello.
14:03Hi. This is Tetley. Hi.
14:05We'll keep a distance at first,
14:06just because he doesn't know you guys.
14:08He has to wear a muzzle, just because he gets startled easily.
14:12If there's people around, he doesn't know.
14:13He's a lovely boy.
14:14Like, it doesn't take long at all for him to come round and be a friend.
14:17As far as we were aware, Tetley was born deaf.
14:19He lost his leg not long later,
14:22so he's had pretty much his whole life being deaf and three-legged,
14:26but it doesn't let it affect him.
14:29He may not be able to hear anything,
14:31but there's nothing wrong with his nose.
14:33You've got the good snacks.
14:35Yeah, I think he's going to be really happy with you guys.
14:38I bet you're all going to really miss him.
14:40Yeah, he's a real favourite with the staff here.
14:43We all absolutely love him.
14:49Absolutely adore Tetley.
14:51So cute.
14:52So now we're going to settle him back into our centre
14:55and slowly meet the rest of the training team
14:57over the next couple of weeks.
14:59And just allow him to decompress and settle into his new life.
15:02And that's all done.
15:03The next day, Tetley arrives at his new gaff with Behaviour Officer Becker.
15:21And I'm ready to welcome them to my neck of the woods.
15:24Oh, look at him.
15:26There he is.
15:27Oh, he's super cute.
15:28He's really cute.
15:29He walks really well.
15:32Hello, darling.
15:34He's a little beaut, isn't he?
15:35He is. He's the most handsome boy.
15:37I mean, he seems to cope quite well with just the three legs.
15:40Oh, yeah, he's jumping over the sofas,
15:42down the back of the sofa to watch the sheep out the window.
15:45He's a lot more agile than you might think.
15:47I'm noticing that you're doing a lot of sign language, it looks like.
15:51I am. Tetley is completely deaf.
15:53Completely deaf.
15:54So we have to communicate entirely through signs.
15:56You keep doing a thumbs up.
15:58What's that? Is that, like, good boy?
16:00The thumbs up is to let him know that he's done something that we like.
16:03Yeah.
16:04And he's about to get a snack.
16:05That's amazing.
16:06I mean, how difficult is it to teach a dog sign language?
16:09To be fair, when we're training a lot of the dogs,
16:11we'll go through the hand motions first and then build onto a vocal cue.
16:14For him, we just left it at the sign.
16:17Except...
16:18Hi.
16:19Is that be quiet?
16:21Yes.
16:22He's cleverer than I am.
16:23When people do that to me, I keep talking.
16:25No, but, yeah, it's exactly the same as teaching anything else.
16:29You've just got to get his attention first.
16:31I mean, this is incredible.
16:33It's a really positive move for him, isn't it?
16:35Oh, 100%.
16:37And a new audience as well.
16:39In Bridgend, he just wasn't getting the interest,
16:41despite him being such a sweet boy.
16:43He is one of the ones that he found harder to home.
16:46What do you think it is that makes it quite difficult for him
16:49to be rehomed?
16:50Is it the, kind of, the legs, the deafness?
16:52It's a big responsibility, isn't it?
16:53100%.
16:54It's such a big combination of things.
16:56He has become quite fearful of strangers.
16:58OK.
16:59And where he can't hear them coming,
17:01they can take him by surprise quite easily.
17:03That does still, unfortunately, put a lot of people off.
17:06It's obvious that you've fallen in love with Rebecca,
17:09and I cannot wait to get to know him a little bit more.
17:12He seems like such a beautiful boy.
17:14As I leave Tetley to get acquainted with his new surroundings,
17:17I've heard Nugget is back in the vet suite.
17:20Good girl.
17:21Look at your beautiful little face.
17:23And I'm keen to find out how she's been getting on.
17:28Hello, guys. You all right?
17:29Hello, guys.
17:30All right?
17:31Nugget, how are you?
17:32Just feeding the Nugget.
17:33How are we getting on with Nugget?
17:34Did you send her off for x-rays?
17:35She did.
17:36So they confirmed that she has ruptured the cruciate ligament.
17:40So that's the little cross ligaments that are within the knee.
17:43And those ligaments are very important
17:45at holding the knee together.
17:46So with her, we're looking to increase her muscle mass
17:50and then surgery.
17:52OK.
17:53So why would you do that first?
17:54Just to give us a good chance of success afterwards
17:57because after the operation,
17:59you're going to have a period of restriction and less activity.
18:02Fine.
18:03So if she doesn't have the muscle mass already,
18:05then during that period of restricted activity,
18:07it's really going to decrease quite a lot anyway
18:09and then that's going to cause more problems essentially.
18:11So we're trying to just give her the best chance of success.
18:14Well, there's no time like the present.
18:18Are we going to try anything else today?
18:20Bring your sausages with you.
18:21Yep.
18:22And get in the treadmill.
18:23Physio Lauren is keen for Nugget
18:25to get acquainted with a hydrotherapy tank.
18:27Hopefully me and my sausages will do the trick.
18:30And it might be that you have to lean out to start with
18:32to encourage her to put a pause on here.
18:34The hydrotherapy treadmill will help Nugget
18:36increase her muscle mass
18:38whilst the water will reduce the strain
18:40and weight going through her limbs.
18:43Don't make yourself look silly.
18:45Nugget!
18:46But first, we have to convince Nugget
18:48that it's a good idea.
18:49Just like this.
18:54Ooh, looks nice.
18:55Easy.
18:56You could try reversing a little bit yourself.
19:00I feel like I'm in Amsterdam in a shop window.
19:04In you get...
19:05Please, don't leave me online.
19:07Come on.
19:08Do you think it might have anything to do with
19:09she's seeing how stupid I look in this?
19:11What if you sort of lure her with a treat?
19:13Ready?
19:14Good girl.
19:15Come on.
19:16Come on, sweetie.
19:17Nugget, please come.
19:20No?
19:21She just sat there.
19:23You just do you, darling.
19:24Yeah?
19:25We don't want you to go in.
19:26No.
19:27Do what you want.
19:28Don't care.
19:29Not even looking.
19:30She's moving around.
19:31She's getting around quite well.
19:32I mean, it's another way of doing it.
19:33I mean, obviously, I know that the walk is good,
19:35but she's done 400 laps.
19:37So that must be building muscle in some sort of way.
19:39Yeah.
19:40Shall we call it?
19:41See, it's going to be really funny, though.
19:43When they stop recording, she'll go through it.
19:44Yep.
19:45You know that thing you want me to do for past half hour?
19:47I can do it.
19:48Well, at least we've all still got our dignity.
19:51In Kenilworth, potential police pups Charlie and Lynn
20:01are doing really well with their socialisation.
20:04It's been really nice for them to be able to mix with a dog
20:06that's a lot bigger than them and gain that bit of confidence
20:09with a dog that isn't their litter mate.
20:12And today, I'm helping dog welfare assistant April
20:15and rehoming coordinator Erin.
20:17These cannot be the same puppies.
20:19Introduce them to another new experience.
20:23So, is there a certain age that they kind of need to be
20:26before you kind of bath or shower?
20:28I'd say about five to six weeks, just because if they're too little,
20:32they can't regulate their body temperature very well.
20:34Police dogs' work may involve water,
20:36so confidence around it is a necessary skill.
20:40Because he's never had to shower on him before,
20:42it can be good to just kind of cook the water on your hand
20:45just so it's not so intense.
20:48What is his kind of body language telling you?
20:51Feeling a little bit wriggly, but Adrian's just giving him
20:54lots of treats for some nice reinforcement.
20:57We've got a runaway.
21:00Right, ready?
21:01Yeah.
21:02Good boy.
21:03Nice puppy.
21:04You can tell now he's getting a little bit more restless.
21:07Yeah.
21:08He's kind of a bit over it.
21:09But that was a good first go for him, that's him.
21:11Right, let's go again.
21:16Oh, look at that tail.
21:17Look at you wagging.
21:18Are you a water dog?
21:21Oh, you don't seem to mind this at all.
21:24He seems to be coping this slightly better than he is.
21:27Yeah, definitely.
21:28His tail's non-stop wagging.
21:29Oh, you're loving this.
21:30Like a spa treatment.
21:31Hello.
21:32I'm going to give you a big fuss now.
21:35Our brother's coming for support.
21:36Do you want some cheese too?
21:38Oh, support.
21:39He's come back.
21:40Obviously he's not scared about the fact that he's just had a bath.
21:42Yeah, so there hasn't been a bad experience for him.
21:44No.
21:45Here we go.
21:46It's all nice and clean.
21:49As introductions to water go, that was pretty good.
21:52Look how fluffy you are.
21:54Oh, you smell delightful.
21:56Which should bode well for their meeting with the police.
21:59It's so good.
22:01So, in your opinion, do you think these two would potentially make great service dogs?
22:07Yeah.
22:08They're such an active and intelligent breed and they are bred to be working dogs.
22:12I think it would just be wonderful to know that these guys have gone somewhere where they're
22:17being fulfilled in their life, bless them.
22:20I mean, you guys know these puppies better than I do, but even in the short amount of
22:25time that I've known them, I feel quite proud.
22:27Yeah.
22:28Do you know what I mean?
22:29Definitely.
22:30I just hope the police can see what we do.
22:35Down in Basildon, whilst I've been away, after much persuasion.
22:40Good girl.
22:42And a lot of hard work, Nugget has finally decided to give hydrotherapy a big old miss.
22:53Are you showing off?
22:54Good girl.
22:55But the team have been able to help her in other ways, whilst also continuing their work,
23:00getting her used to being handled.
23:02It's as simple as it, she put my hand next to her face and then rewarded it.
23:07Yes.
23:08And finally, she's ready for her surgery at the external vet.
23:15We're going to do a surgery that essentially reshapes the tibia, the shin bone, in order
23:19to make that cruciate ligament redundant, so that she'll be able to walk through the
23:22leg without it feeling like it's going to give way underneath her.
23:26You need to do the surgery otherwise she'd continue to limp, then she'd get lots of arthritis
23:30in her knee.
23:31The arthritis becomes painful.
23:33She'd lose the range of motion in her knee.
23:35Some of these dogs really do struggle to get up and be mobile at all.
23:40Perfect, thank you.
23:41Vet surgeon Claire begins by opening up the joint to get a better look and immediately
23:46spots the issue.
23:48That band has ruptured completely and there's definitely cruciate disease going on here,
23:53so I'm going to cut through the bone and then I'm going to rotate a portion of the bone
23:58and then plate it back in place.
24:00A metal plate will help stabilise the knee joint so it no longer has to rely on the torn
24:08ligament.
24:09Good, we'll get this closed.
24:13It is a complex surgery, but this should give her the best knee that she can have going
24:18forward and return to a good level of function and have a nice quality of life.
24:22Nugget will be taken back to Dog's Trust when she's ready, but with a tough recovery period.
24:27Her stay at the centre is going to be much longer than anyone had first hoped.
24:38As a sponsor dog, new Basildon resident Tetley was always likely to be here for some time.
24:44Good job.
24:46So his big new sponsor kennel is getting a makeover and to make him feel at home,
24:51Lisa is bringing a little bit of Wales to Essex.
24:55Put your hand in, grab the corner.
24:57No, no, it's the wrong corner.
24:58It's the wrong corner.
24:59It's the wrong corner.
25:00Well, there's only four of them.
25:01I can't know if I've got that wrong.
25:02It's the top corner.
25:03Top corner.
25:04Give me strength.
25:05What are you doing?
25:06It's the top corner.
25:07I don't even know what the top one is.
25:08I don't even know now what one it is.
25:09Is that one?
25:10Where's the one I had?
25:11No, you didn't.
25:12You've got the bottom.
25:13I have the top corner.
25:14Right.
25:15How have you made it to adulthood?
25:16Shake it.
25:17Shake it.
25:18Shake it.
25:19Right.
25:20He gets a double bed.
25:21He gets a double bed.
25:22Yep.
25:23He's got a sofa.
25:24It's got its own little playground outside.
25:25This is lovely.
25:26It's nice, isn't it?
25:27We've got the...
25:28Oh, is that because there's a Welsh seat?
25:29This is a Welsh dragon.
25:30That can go on the bed and then...
25:32Oh, jeez.
25:33It's a dragon.
25:35It's a dragon.
25:36It's a dragon.
25:37What else have we got, darling?
25:40Can you hang these pictures up?
25:42So we've got Welcoming Welsh, got his whole team, and then we thought we'd just bring
25:46a little bit of Essex in as well.
25:48Yeah.
25:49Well, I think that's quite Essex.
25:52We're not really putting that up.
25:53We are putting that up.
25:54Oh, don't be so silly.
25:55We are putting that up.
25:56Don't be so silly.
25:57We are putting it up.
25:58We are putting it up.
26:01Ta-da!
26:03That looks all right.
26:04We know it's not the same as a home, but we want to make it as close as we can.
26:08Oh, we've done a good job.
26:09Time to see if Tetley approves.
26:11Wow.
26:12You're straight on the bed.
26:13You've got your own most dragon.
26:14Yes, you have.
26:15The bed's definitely got a seal of approval.
26:16How you doing, buddy?
26:17Yeah, we're all good.
26:18Good boy.
26:19And as sponsor dogs often receive letters from their sponsor supporters, I'm adding
26:29the final touch.
26:31Dear Tetley, I love you because you are my best friend.
26:34This one's drawn a lovely picture of a Tetley.
26:37They have rubbed a leg out.
26:38Got one from Denny.
26:39Dear Tetley, I have four friends and you are one of them.
26:42Right.
26:43I declare the Tetley gallery open.
26:47Welcome home, Tetley.
26:49It's been a week since Nugget's surgery and today she's having a post-op check with vet Mark
26:57and Nurse Charlotte.
26:58Hello.
26:59How is she?
27:00So, I think looking at her straight away, she's obviously weight bearing on that leg quite
27:04well, which is good because with this surgery it's not always the case that they're weight
27:08bearing as well as this.
27:09Some dogs will just be toe touching at this point.
27:12I look at the wound, you know, it looks nice and clean.
27:15The incision site has healed really nicely.
27:18She seems to be fairly comfortable with you kind of touching it.
27:21Yeah.
27:22She is on pain relief but certainly she's not reacting to any degree.
27:25So, nothing you're immediately concerned about then in this kind of little check-up?
27:29Yeah, I think overall she seems to be doing really well.
27:32Well done, darling.
27:33When will she be able to start kind of exercising properly?
27:36So, the exercise plan normally in place for this kind of surgery is eight weeks.
27:41Wow.
27:42So, that's really restricted.
27:43Two months, that's a long time, isn't it?
27:45Yeah.
27:47It is restrictive.
27:48Being shut into the back of the kennel so she doesn't have too much room to be going crazy.
27:53They can get bored.
27:54It is just like kennel fever really, isn't it?
27:57It's going to be really tough for Nugget.
28:00Having to be restricted for two months is really, really tough on her.
28:04She must just be sick of just being prodded and like having to go for surgery.
28:08And then she's only allowed out for toilet breaks and stuff now and that's not ideal.
28:12But she's in the best place possible and the guys have done, you know, such amazing work of her so far.
28:17So, yeah, little baby Nugget.
28:20She's a baby.
28:21A baby.
28:23Sp prendre all of the bugs.
28:27All Nugget can do is wait.
28:29But the time has finally come for Charlie and Lint.
28:34because police sergeant Jamie Winrow and civilian dog trainer Mark Kay from
28:39Greater Manchester Police have come to see whether they think the pups are up
28:43to the challenge of becoming service dogs if they make a good first
28:48impression their new life could start today this is Charlie and Lynn these are
28:56the two that I personally picked out what made you choose them obviously I'm
29:00not an expert but they are the most outgoing seem to me the most resilient
29:04and the most comfortable and kind of new surroundings and doing new things
29:07well we want dogs to be confident they're willing to engage but they're
29:11willing to come yeah and investigate nice and social yeah yeah really sociable both
29:16of them so what is it about Malinois that make kind of the perfect service dogs
29:21through military and police it's the natural drive that these dogs have they're
29:25very athletic as well yeah so if someone wants to run away the ground that these
29:29can cover quite quickly yeah that is the most important thing what sort of
29:33things would they be doing it tracking suspects locating property we'd use the
29:37dogs for searching for people in a public order situation a police dog can be the
29:41equivalent of five to six seven officers so you create a really strong bond with
29:46these dogs yeah you're basically going to work with your best mate dog with me
29:49every day at the end of the working day dog comes home with me we want them to have a
29:54a family the love that every dog kind of wants at home yeah we'll get with the
29:58family yeah I mean my job from day one is to look after that dog yeah but also
30:02that dog in return will look after me that's really beautiful man I mean I I'm
30:08obviously completely obsessed with both of these dogs you've spent you know 10
30:1115 minutes with them now I mean guys do you think it's it's likely you're gonna
30:15take both of these dogs in what I love is the sociability they're happy to come and
30:21investigate look at everybody nothing's phasing them yeah you can see they're
30:24quite happy to come and take food out of people's hands which is brilliant for us
30:27that's how we do all our training he's exactly what we're looking for we would
30:33love to say these dogs yes
30:36got your eye on either one of them I do quite like Charlie it's just been over a
30:40couple of times to me I'm saying he's taken oh he's making a show I think I
30:44think Charlie's picked me to be I didn't have him down as a needy type so these
30:52beautiful puppies could have a really really important job in the future they're
30:55gonna have a massive job within great Manchester police yes you need me to
30:59scout puppies in the future I'm available to do that people have called me the
31:03best in the business so just let me know if you need anything well would you
31:07be available to do the running away from the dogs when the training
31:10got bad knees you see so I'll happily watch though you're always welcome what
31:15a great day you've got a new job puppies so that's it Charlie and Lynn have gone
31:23to potentially become operational place dogs which is just it's incredible
31:27good luck puppy goodbye boys miss you the fact that kind of two rescue dogs are
31:36gonna end up having such an important role it's just an amazing feeling I mean
31:42I'm really blessed and honored to have been a tiny tiny part of their journey I
31:47imagine you know crime rates in Manchester are gonna go down rapidly and
31:51some of that is down to me text and serve
31:57in Basildon nugget is four weeks into a recovery from cruciate ligament surgery
32:14she's still on strict kennel rest and only allowed out for short toilet
32:26breaks good girl she's gone a bit more used to it now she kind of knows the drill
32:31good girl well done come on then I'm going to see if there's anything I can do to make her recovery a bit more fun
32:40Cheryl my little love hello how are you darling I'm good nugget oh poor nugget I know yeah I've been sent to do some enrichment
32:49so we can do two different types of enrichment for nugget and a foodie one and
32:55then we can do one with a few smells all right what have you got in your big bag
32:59of smelly stuff there's some cat fur in there it smells like it's biscuits it
33:04doesn't smell anything like biscuits not a thing like biscuits so we've got some
33:08stuff to put it in okay so you just want me to rip up some of this and put it in
33:11yeah if you just put a little bit for now we've also got some yarrow oh that
33:15smells nice that's awful oh I thought that was really pleasant just garnishing the
33:21snuff on that so what we're gonna do is spread it on to here if you're like
33:27icing a cake like try I look like the sort of boat that's iced the cake no you
33:31don't but like what you imagine it might be like that's it perfect yeah yeah if
33:36you just want to stick them in the little meaty bit people always assume that
33:40all dogs need is is physical exercise but actually the mental stimulation is
33:44just as important this is good stuff to do things like this for your dog right
33:49so we've done sniffy snuffle and we've done little licky-picky yes are you
33:54ready I'm always ready hello angel come on in babe that way there we go oh she's
34:06nice we've got loads of lovely things for you oh loving this darling it must be
34:11really frustrating only being a year old yeah and having all gone through all this
34:16kind of stuff having to wear this tone not be able to exercise and this will
34:20just change your life once she's fully healed well it's an opportunity really
34:24for her isn't it to start her life properly yeah because medically she'll be
34:28in a position where she's not in any pain she's not any discomfort anymore so it's
34:31just a bit of a journey for the next kind of few weeks to get to that point she's
34:35actually coping so well with it it is just a shame that you can't explain to her that
34:42you know just give it a few weeks yeah and we'll have got this sorted for you and your
34:46life is going to be so much different there you go baby she's absolutely loving this
34:54she's really enjoying that so when you sing like dogs do you ever imagine what
34:58their voices sound like yes I do yeah I think it's quite posh do you I've got a
35:03feeling she's a bit this is a very nice leaky mat I'm really enjoying getting my
35:09nose right in and around fabulous yeah it's fabulous hopefully nugget won't have
35:15to wait much longer to get the all clear and finally get out of her kennel for
35:19good one resident who is absolutely loving time in his kennel is Tetley and today it's
35:30all hands on deck as it's a very special day and of course I'm getting stuck in
35:37hold on hold on why have I got to get my fingers in it have I actually make it I
35:42can't just okay then so I'm gonna do this now I'm gonna get my hands right in this and make a cake
35:49yeah yeah okay as the rest of the team get the decorations up I put the
35:57finishing touches on Tetley's birthday cake what's this bit of cheese and ham oh
36:02lovely yeah I mean can't make any worse can we then little treats on the top I'll
36:07give you a nine out of ten four nine out of ten yeah take that now all we need is
36:11is the dog himself here's a birthday ball birthday cake he made it especially for you
36:19oh straight for the cake absolutely smash that happy birthday mate oh look at you I'm wrapping
36:26your birthday presents oh what have you got there Tetley oh it's a big ball oh this is
36:31really cute isn't it Destin how do you think he's enjoying his birthday I think he's had the best time
36:36ever yeah yeah it's nice to do something special in it at least first kind of birthday here and him
36:41being a sponsor dog in there and as Tetley is deaf we've prepared something special for him so we
36:48say happy birthday and a one and a two and a one two three four go I can already tell he's gonna have
37:02the most wonderful stay here no matter how long that is
37:17after eight long weeks it's the moment of truth for nugget
37:23as she's back at the external vets for x-rays to check if the surgery has been successful
37:32we've got a nice join of the bone here there's not much sign of separation so it looks like there
37:45has been fresh bone being laid down and I think it's starting to look really really good all that
37:51kennel rest has paid off and after a much longer stay than planned nugget is finally ready to go up for
37:58re-homing and I'm sure she'll find a new loving family in no time
38:12and talking of good news the remaining eight mallee pups have all found new homes
38:20but I've not been able to stop thinking about brothers charlie and lynn
38:24it's been three months since they went off to start their training with greater manchester police
38:31so today I'm heading up north to see how they're getting on
38:36how are we boys i'm good how are you hello puppies how are the dogs they're doing really
38:42well we're really pleased with them so who have we got charlie and lynn so this was charlie yeah
38:46i've now changed his name to rico rico yeah i like unusual names for dogs that work in the street
38:52amazing and then that was lynn and this is now cairo cairo yeah honestly they look incredible from last
38:59time i saw them when they were kind of they were listening nutters last time the ones have been
39:04doing a good job yeah we try and channel their energies into the training room yeah come on mate
39:09as cairo's handler isn't here rico and mark are going to show me what they've been working on
39:15nicole come heel heel having full control over service dogs before they go out on the streets
39:21is crucial
39:29it's amazing actually watching them do this i mean these are five month old puppies
39:33i've been watching him just focused on mark and stuff it's clear mark really loves him as well
39:43which is really lovely and this exercise with regards to recall i've only started doing it last
39:47week so we're a week in a week in on this yeah well we've both got our fingers crossed for you mark
39:51because it won't be the dog's fault you ready for this rico yeah good mark's also teaching rico to
39:59jump over obstacles so he'll be able to chase suspects search buildings and jump high fences
40:06it's incredible watching them do that might bring my dogs down i never got them
40:13it's like a little kangaroo yeah down oh my god you can kind of see that he really enjoys it as well
40:20yeah what's next lads do you want to get involved of course i do what we're going to do is you're going
40:25to run off you're going to go and hide behind one of the trees and rico's going to come out he's going
40:29to find you give his best back and then you're going to reward him with a bob all i heard there
40:33was i've got to run yeah and then stand still run and stand still okay this training should lead to
40:41rico learning how to find people weapons drugs or explosives using his powerful sense of smell
40:49but for now he's just got to find his favorite toy you ready pete hold on a second just jeans are quite
40:54tight tight just give you more oh here we go it's been a while since i've run anywhere not the first
41:04time i've run them from the police though please for the dog come out from the dog please for the dog

41:18there you go buddy yeah rico come come on rico oh hey come on oh he's clever boy i love him
41:26oh he's clever boy right yeah how do you think rico did there i think he did really well he did
41:33really good yeah i mean this is the first time he's gone out and searched for somebody totally
41:37different oh so it's the first time he's done that yeah so somebody doesn't really know well you
41:41know just like to be part of the process don't i if he makes it then uh it's all down it will be down
41:46to me mate boys honestly it's been incredible coming to see cairo and rico again and you boys of course

42:03you for everything you do boys i really appreciate it man you've been amazing buddy yes you have oh yes
42:07i know because you were just a little tear away when i saw you last rico and cairo still have a long
42:14road ahead of them before they have the chance to become official police dogs but i've got everything
42:19crossed for them i have had the most incredible morning it is fascinating absolutely fascinating what these
42:27guys do to know that these two dogs have come from dog's trust it's such a beautiful moment it gives
42:33me goosebumps you know i saw these dogs at the beginning of their kind of journey and this is
42:38what they're born and bred to do it's just been an amazing day if the sun don't rise till the summer time
42:49she could easily have died hopefully we can get kira healthy again how she's managed to bring up
43:07six puppies you seem pretty healthy it's a miracle you want to say goodbye she seems like a lovely little
