00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:04We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh my God!
00:16She's five months old.
00:18It's a Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:25In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog. Good girl.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:43With hopeful new owners.
00:45We can trot together! Let's trot!
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:51I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:56And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:04Thank you!
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice.
01:13It's locked in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever.
01:17With the perfect match.
01:19Oh, my God!
01:20Oh!
01:21Oh!
01:22You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29Are you trying to help you?
01:30Are you trying to help you?
01:31I don't know.
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog.
01:39You're very effective.
01:40It's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:46That first time, the tip of the tail wags.
01:48You just get a little flutter of hope.
01:50I love them.
01:51You know they're a keeper.
02:02Come on, Nala.
02:03Come on.
02:04Hello.
02:05Oh, we're going to find your friend, Nala.
02:07Yeah, we're going to find your friend.
02:08What can you smell?
02:12This is Nala.
02:13She's one of a kind of a dog.
02:15Do you have a run in my hair?
02:16Yes, we are.
02:17Good girl.
02:18She is a boxer.
02:19You've got to watch out, because you don't know when she can.
02:22Come on, step.
02:24Here to find a new best friend, with her humans in tow, is five-year-old Nala from Newcastle.
02:34Come on.
02:35Hiya.
02:36Hiya.
02:37Welcome to Budgree.
02:38Hi.
02:39Hi.
02:40So, I'm Alicia.
02:41Hello.
02:42Nice to meet you.
02:43Hello.
02:44Chris.
02:45Finn.
02:46Nala.
02:47Nala!
02:48I think she's just...
02:49Because she can't see, she's wondering what we are.
02:51She's wondering, right?
02:52Yeah.
02:53What?
02:54Is she blind?
02:55Completely.
02:56She's got no eyes.
02:57You didn't even notice, did you?
02:58Oh, no.
02:59She didn't.
03:00Nala is still as nosy as she was when she had eyes, but now she crashes into everything
03:05instead.
03:06Are we here for a pal for Nala?
03:07Yeah.
03:08We are, yes.
03:09What would you say she's like?
03:10She's definitely daddy's baby.
03:12Yeah.
03:13I never used to be a dog lover though, did I?
03:15Not really.
03:16Not at all.
03:17What did you do the first night we got Nala?
03:19I think put her on in the bed.
03:21In the middle between me and Susie.
03:23What are the logistics of a boxer in your bed?
03:25You buy your bigger bed.
03:27Shall we get you sat down and someone will be over and have a chat with you shall?
03:32Come on Nala.
03:37Hiya, the straight here now, just at the front of the welcome centre.
03:40No worries, thank you very much.
03:42A young Pomeranian has arrived at Wood Green after being found by a member of the public.
03:49Hiya, who have we got here?
03:51So we've been calling him Fox.
03:52Okay.
03:53Found him in my horse's field yesterday and at first thought he was a fox.
03:57He was rigid with fear.
03:59He was so scared that I thought I just wanted to take him to the vet to get checked over.
04:03Vet thinks he's around two years old, riddled with fleas.
04:08He's not lead trained, not house trained.
04:10Doesn't really know normal things, yeah.
04:11Definitely confirm those two things.
04:13Well, thank you for bringing him in and for helping him.
04:15We'll look after him.
04:17Come on then.
04:22I hate the idea that anybody out there would purposefully abandon their dog for whatever reason.
04:30Good boy, I'm a sister, Lynn.
04:32To actually take them somewhere and leave them to fend for themselves, it's really heartbreaking
04:38and you try not to think about what that dog must have gone through,
04:44because that just hurts too much.
04:46Are you all right, Bert? Shall we get you to help?
04:49We just know that as soon as they're within our care, they're safe.
04:54Good boy.
04:56He's very scared at the minute and probably in a bit of a state of shock as well.
05:00So coming to a new place with all these new sounds, they are going to sort of cling to what they know as safety,
05:06which for him is this crate at the minute.
05:08So we'll just let him come out really nice and slow.
05:10Good boy, darling.
05:11Well done.
05:12Good boy.
05:13Well done.
05:14Good boy.
05:15Well done.
05:16When I do reach out to try and stroke him really gently, he is backing away.
05:30He is a little bit worried, so obviously we won't push that.
05:33We'll just take it at his pace really and just slowly start building up that trust and that bond with him.
05:39Good boy, darling.
05:41So brave.
05:42Well done.
05:47Come see you later, yeah?
05:49Oh, who's this?
05:55Nala.
05:56I can see obviously she is blind.
05:59She is, yes.
06:00Has she been like that since you got her?
06:02No, just a few months now.
06:04About six months ago, one of her eyes went white and they couldn't do anything for that eye.
06:11But then suddenly the other eye, the right eye, started to go as well.
06:19She was in pain.
06:20They said there's nothing we can actually do.
06:22She's gone completely blind now.
06:24So the only option really was to get her eyes removed and take the pain away.
06:29But even though we knew that was the really only option, it was still horrible.
06:32Yeah, of course.
06:34And you still feel guilty.
06:36So it was a big shock, but actually you think it was the best thing you could have done for her.
06:41Oh, definitely.
06:43Has that affected their personality at all?
06:45She's a lot more cuddly, but she's also a lot more anxious.
06:49She likes to lie on your leg or like lie close to you just so she knows that you're there.
06:53Yeah.
06:56It's like she's lost that spark that used to make her that bit crazier.
07:00This is just Nala doing zoomies.
07:03You'd let her off the leader and she'd just run round and round for ages.
07:06You'd walk back to the house and she would just collapse on the floor.
07:09She'd lie there with a smile on her face and you can tell it's a proper smile.
07:16She's lost a lot of her confidence, do you think?
07:18Yeah.
07:19Nala wants to do all the things she used to do, but can't quite learn how to play properly.
07:27If Nala could even do half zoomies, I feel like my heart would burst open.
07:33It's like winning the lottery.
07:36Finn, what kind of dog do you think Nala would really like as a companion?
07:40Would she like a play?
07:41A playful, protective, happy dog.
07:45That's really lovely.
07:46So a dog that will maybe understand that she can't see and help her.
07:51Yeah.
07:52So you're not really that worried about breed.
07:53It's more about the personality being the right fit for Nala.
07:56Yeah.
07:57Understood.
07:58OK, we'll go away and have a look at the dog.
07:59So hang tight.
08:00Yes.
08:01See you in a bit soon.
08:02Bye.
08:03Nala.
08:04Have you got a dog in mind?
08:07We do have coconut.
08:08I love that little boy.
08:11Well, he's not so little.
08:15And he's not puppy puppy, he's five months old.
08:18He'll definitely give Nala that confidence and that playful spark back.
08:24And I think Nala can then show him a thing or two and be a good role model as well.
08:30I think it's just a match made in heaven.
08:32This is coconut.
08:35And he arrived to Woodgreen as a stray.
08:38It could be that he needs a lot more attention than someone's able to give him,
08:43because he can be quite a needy boy.
08:45I love his big bat ears.
08:49He has still got a lot of learning to do.
08:52He's in his adolescent phase, so he's going to have some naughty teenage habits.
08:56But it's important that people have the patience for him as well.
09:00Coconut just enjoys playing with other dogs.
09:04Good boy.
09:06A home with coconut is probably going to be a lot of fun.
09:09We might have found you a friend, Nala.
09:15How would she feel about a brother?
09:18Nala, what about a brother?
09:20A boyfriend?
09:21Do you want to know his name?
09:23It's coconut.
09:26Coconut?
09:27Which might give you a little clue as to what colour he is.
09:32Is he white and fluffy by any chance?
09:34A little bit fluffy.
09:35A little bit.
09:36How old is he then?
09:38He's five months.
09:40Oh!
09:41He's a baby!
09:42At five months old, he's not got a fixed idea about what other dogs should be like
09:46and how they should respond to him, so actually growing up with a blind dog,
09:49he's not going to know any different.
09:51Yeah, I hadn't ever thought about it like that, yeah.
09:53I don't think we should know the breed.
09:55Should we keep the breed as soon?
09:56Yeah.
09:57Not small, it's not huge.
09:58I know you've got all this talk, but I just want to meet and run.
10:01Well, I won't keep you waiting too long then.
10:05OK.
10:06I'm going to take Nala down and then you shall see what coconut is.
10:10He's only a baby, so you have to be nice.
10:13Right, we're going to do step.
10:16Step.
10:18There we go.
10:20I think if Nala had lost a leg, I wouldn't faz us half as much as what
10:27our losing our eyes have because our eyes are really part of our personality
10:33and taking that away is like taking a bit of her away.
10:40Right, this big ramp here.
10:41This way.
10:42That's it.
10:44I couldn't look at her.
10:45Honestly, I couldn't look at her when she had her operation done.
10:48Not for the first few days because it just didn't look like Nala.
10:52We're going to go through the door?
10:54I had never seen Chris as...
10:57..heartbroken.
11:02Oh, oh, you're gay!
11:05There was a big old post there.
11:06I couldn't imagine what it's like for her.
11:08Terrified would be my thought.
11:11To go from seeing everything to complete darkness.
11:18I'm hoping that another dog can show her how to experience the world
11:22in a way that we can't.
11:26I'm going to meet new friends!
11:27And give Nala the insight to what kind of world's still out there.
11:32We want her to have every opportunity to enjoy life
11:36as much as she physically can.
11:39Give me your best behaviour.
11:43Oh!
11:44Hi!
11:45Hello!
11:46My goodness!
11:47Yes!
11:48Oh!
11:49Who's this?
11:50He's so lovely!
11:51Good girl!
11:52Who's that?
11:53Do you want to say hello?
11:54Very keen to say hello.
11:55Oh!
11:56Yeah, she is!
11:57Nala's blind, so she can't read any body language.
12:00Right.
12:01Oh, she's trying to find him!
12:02Yeah, he's there!
12:03Oh, are you trying to back away?
12:04Oh!
12:05Are you trying to back away?
12:06Oh!
12:07Oh!
12:08Oh!
12:09Oh!
12:10Oh!
12:11Oh!
12:12Oh!
12:13Oh!
12:14Oh!
12:15Oh!
12:16Oh!
12:17Oh!
12:18Oh!
12:19Oh!
12:20Oh!
12:21Oh!
12:22Oh!
12:23Are you trying to back away?
12:24Oh!
12:25Oh, I think Coconut's a bit worried.
12:26A little bit worried.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Shall we give him a bit of space?
12:29He's not going to hurt you.
12:30She's really nice.
12:31She just can't see you.
12:32I know.
12:33You're all right.
12:34Do you think he's a bit scared of her?
12:36Yeah.
12:37Yeah.
12:38Yeah.
12:39I think he's just not sure.
12:40Not sure.
12:41Not sure.
12:42You might not understand that she's blind.
12:43Are you OK?
12:44Is he all right?
12:45It's difficult for her, I guess, because she can't see where he is.
12:47No.
12:48She has to get really close to know he's there.
12:49Oh, bless her.
12:50It's OK.
12:51She just wants to know.
12:52You're not sure, are you?
12:57I think she likes him.
12:59I just think he's a bit unsure.
13:02I think it would be great to get the family down.
13:04Yes.
13:05Just to see what they think.
13:06Do you want to go and see?
13:08Let's go!
13:10Bix, right, obviously you brought up matching dogs.
13:23Yeah, obviously.
13:26Have you ever tried humans?
13:27No, but I would love to.
13:29But I can't.
13:30I should be your extrema.
13:31What you're after.
13:32Everything.
13:33anything everything not anything oh do you think there's a doggo waiting for we're actually here
13:50praying woodgreen will find them the perfect match reverend alex and wife carrie we met
13:56at vicar school not many people say that i feel a bit sick it's a bit real now isn't it yeah yeah
14:04i gave carrie the most romantic proposal i was actually ironing some cloths for holy
14:09communion we still joke now that the laundry is where the best things happen
14:17she nicks my clothes you know if you're going to be married to a woman you've got to take your
14:21advantages where you can so what sort of things would you like in a new pet that slight
14:35cheeky personality not too prim and proper yeah yeah i'd like a dog that would go to the pub to
14:43church the coffee shop and it's the social time the social time and i i want to be able to equally
14:50snuggle up on the sofa and and chill yeah is this going to be your first venture into the dog world
14:56both of us have had dogs before separately and then we've had one dog together um who we've recently
15:03lost say oh she was called mini do you mind if we ask what happened it was a a freak accident she
15:11jumped and gave herself sort of the equivalent of like a a whiplash injury and she was she was
15:17paralyzed so how awful it was very very sudden you couldn't replace minnie but we realized that we
15:24need a dog yeah well i think you've given us everything that we need to hopefully go and
15:31find you a dog sit tight we're going to have a look and we'll be back soon okay thank you so much
15:38what's easy
15:42thank you
15:46say hello well hello you too hi hi nala mum and dad's here and finn
15:52have you found a friend thank you thank you
15:55you're excited she's very excited happy to see you are you gonna play now boy it's okay
16:09oh you're gaining a bit more confidence now oh look at how he bounces as well he kind of pounces
16:15doesn't he oh that might be a bit too much for her we're getting a bit over the top now calm down
16:25it's probably just all of the excitement and yeah
16:32what oh it's like puppy going into adolescence it's such a hard age isn't it it's got a bit too
16:39excited i think finn do you want to get some toys out for coconut and see if he'll play hello hello
16:49you want to play
16:58oh that's nice oh my goodness coconut you made a friend
17:06it's a doggy party oh that's so cute you're gonna knock into that water
17:12oh she put her foot in it coconut reminds me of nala when she had a vision she was very bouncy
17:21yeah she was always doing things that she shouldn't have done yeah i would say it's
17:25like watching a little one run around with their brother or sister
17:33i don't doubt for a second he can be trained they'd be lovely together once he is
17:37oh nala where's your friend for nala the only thing i worry about is is she up for the challenge
17:46herself good boy we have had a really good look through all of the dogs that we've got yeah we have
17:59picked a maltese cross oh here's a social butterfly and his name is mushy
18:07mushy is a bit of a cheeky chatty oh be careful what you wish for
18:17oh i can't wait to meet him good boy yeah so mushy is quite the character he's got a lot of energy
18:25he's very playful mushy mud come here yeah he definitely definitely has a mischievous side to him
18:33mushy he loves being chased he sniffs absolutely everything every single blade of brass
18:44so unfortunately mushy's owner was made homeless um so then he had to move into a temporary accommodation
18:51so they made the decision to bring him here give me your paw good boy yeah good boy once mushy knows
19:00you he's he's a really affectionate boy but he doesn't always show the love instantly and that
19:04might be why he's been here for seven weeks and that's not good for a young dog with mushy's new
19:10family i want him to show his affectionate side and actually go up and accept some fuss
19:14he'll want to sniff won't he yeah he will just get the idea of the land i mean he used to take us
19:24hours to get anywhere with minnie with a sniff so this is minnie probably at her happiest
19:32in the middle of a game of ball her right ear was frenchy and up and her left ear was shitsy
19:39okay okay okay right we've got to be calm
19:46with our children all being grown up and living away when we had minnie it was like our version of
19:56family 24 7. that empty nest was kind of filled a little bit oh i hope he likes us yeah yeah i want
20:06him to feel loved all right you gotta be a good boy okay show him your crazy side but also show him
20:12your nice side here's some movement and something about to happen we would never replace minnie um but
20:23to rescue would be almost to do it for her um and to honor her and give another dog the love that she'd
20:32given us really come on then here we go oh gosh oh hello oh my god yeah i'm georgia this is mushy hello
20:48um i'm gonna let him for the leader probably have a little sniff around but yeah feel free to play with
20:52him okay thank you okay he's gonna have a good sniff first oh can you smell mushy oh super good boy
21:07he's definitely checking it all out yeah yeah i'll just mark the fact that i'm here i think we're
21:12gonna have to pee proof our house he is definitely marking his territory but it might also be a bit of a
21:19nervous um behavior so weeing can release tension he's got to get comfy first yeah he's got to
21:27he's got to do all his marking and all the sniffing oh hello oh i saw that oh i saw that
21:39it's one of the four f's isn't it you know if you're worried by something you can
21:43fight flight and then one of them's fall around so he's just being a bit silly because he's scared
21:49and he doesn't really know what to do with all that anxiety hello hello do you want to come and see me
21:57hello oh and we're off again hi hi who is this oh yeah he's quite good at entertaining himself
22:10ideas he's just living his life and having a great time is he affectionate in her
22:21home is really different without a dog it's still a
22:29minnie would sit on my knee and just be with me i miss that so much
22:34do we feel like a brave boy today i think we do stray pomeranian fox has been groomed deflead and is
22:55settling into life at wood green day by day fox has been growing in confidence and he is doing really
23:01well oh you cheeky boy even this is so much progress with him um compared to the first day
23:08where he was even reluctant to come out the crate it's so rewarding to see coming in good boy well
23:15done when you pick his lead up he actually gets really excited which is a complete 360 from when
23:21we first picked that lead up he would run away he'd hide and he'd shake now he actually really enjoys
23:27going for walks good boy should go through here new things scare him quite a lot this is probably
23:33because he's not really had much exposure to things what's that you see a duck
23:37good boy you can be gentle but for now it's all about just building his confidence in the world
23:54good boy you're being so brave aren't you
23:56i want a big dog a big dog no no it's not i want a small dog lucy what are you small medium
24:11you're prepared aren't you yeah so this is lucy's dog bag isn't it you've had this for probably about
24:22two years she's got poo bags with a poo bag holder and she's got a lead and a collar can't leave a
24:29garden center without coming out with something yeah what breed harry st bernard
24:34some douglas lucy no pomeranian pomeranian yeah that's more like it 14 year old lucy has rallied
24:43the whole family in search of a four-legged friend to finally call her own how long have you
24:49brought your dog for has it been a long time yes what have you brought for your dog lucy stick let's see
24:56how long have you had the stick for six six days no six years yeah oh yeah it's actually true
25:08we were walking weren't we in the woods and lucy saw a stick and said i want to keep it

25:29moment haven't we shall we get you sat down yeah yeah get you comfy i'm so excited thank you
25:40i think for us it's about the personality and temperament of the dog more than the necessarily the
25:46yes agreed oh wow okay small ideally because where's it gonna sleep oh my bed on lucy's bed so
25:56what sort of personality would you like the dog to have calm cuddly yeah loving very friendly yeah
26:05lucy's been in a bit of pain haven't you recently and spent a lot of time in her bed and in her room
26:13lucy has cerebral palsy and she's got dystonia which is like a muscle spasm tightness
26:26for the last six months lucy has been in and out of hospital a lot
26:33occasionally you've said haven't you i'm lonely and i'd like a dog yeah the fact she has that feeling
26:38um and knows what that feels like yeah that's not what you want no i think just companionship and
26:49friend yeah the shadow yeah
26:53dad you're embarrassing me dad oh god
26:57go and have a look and see what we can do all right okay
27:00all right thanks so much thank you thank you bye

27:16he's quite erratic with his behavior he's just not settling
27:25hey maybe he needs someone to be a little bit more forward with him no one really wants to make
27:32the first move do they yeah
27:34he wants to engage yeah yeah but he's just not sure who we are
27:43okay
27:48What's he?
27:50What's he going?
27:52What's he going?
27:54Easy.
27:56Easy.
27:58Quick.
28:00Quick.
28:02Bring him back. Bring him back.
28:04With Alex's job, people look to you for guidance or for comfort.
28:10Yes, what's down here?
28:14Oh, that's a good boy.
28:16That's a good boy.
28:18She's very gentle and nurturing in her ways.
28:22That's it.
28:24Oh, you've got a very wet face.
28:26And she can relate to people.
28:28He's lying down.
28:30He's really good.
28:32Oh, good boy.
28:34You're really a good boy.
28:36Good boy.
28:38He's the good boy.
28:42Oh, that's what we wanted to see.
28:44Oh, my gosh, he's quite...
28:50He needs to say mind what he wants.
28:54They're seeing that cheeky side that we told them about.
29:00Yeah.
29:02He's really playful.
29:04Yeah.
29:06Come on.
29:08Oh, well done.
29:10I really like his confidence and his independence.
29:14He's fine.
29:16That's it.
29:18He said a quiet word in his ear and said,
29:22yeah, go and live with these two.
29:24They're all right.
29:26Oh, well done.
29:28The dog's for Lucy.
29:32She's 14.
29:34And she's absolutely desperate for a dog.
29:36So we have...
29:38Poppy.
29:40She's nine.
29:42She is cuddly.
29:44She is chilled.
29:46She's used to sleeping on the owner's bed.
29:48I mean, Lucy loves Pomeranians.
29:53We do have a Pomeranian.
29:55Yeah.
29:56We have Fox.
29:57He was a little stray.
29:59Very, very frightened when he came in.
30:01His confidence is coming on in leaps and bounds.
30:04He can be really affectionate once he's got to know you,
30:07but he won't do it on the first date.
30:10It's just how instant they want that dog
30:13that's going to curl up on the bed with her.
30:15Fox is Lucy's dream breed type.
30:19Doesn't fit perfectly behaviourally.
30:22Poppy isn't necessarily the type they're looking for,
30:25but is a much better fit behaviourally.
30:27I'm just not sure.
30:31We've narrowed it down to two possibilities.
30:34OK.
30:35The first one is a little boy and he's very sweet.
30:39What is it?
30:41Pomeranian.
30:42Oh, my gosh.
30:45Oh, my God.
30:47Now, Lucy, this little dog is called Fox.
30:52Fox.
30:53All right?
30:54But I want you to understand that Fox is a stray.
30:58Fox has been very nervous when he first came in to us.
31:04OK.
31:05He has an affectionate side.
31:07OK.
31:08But we don't know if he's ever lived in a house before.
31:10All right?
31:11OK.
31:12And there's going to be a fair bit of work involved
31:14into integrating him with the whole family.
31:18Right.
31:19All right?
31:20OK.
31:21So, it's not perfect-perfect.
31:26I don't know.
31:27Look at her.
31:28I mean, sort of 100% perfect.
31:32For Lucy.
31:33Yeah.
31:34So, the other option is a little beagle.
31:38OK.
31:39And her name is Poppy.
31:40Yeah.
31:41She would be an easier slot into the family.
31:44Yeah.
31:45She is not up for loads of exercise, either,
31:48and you ain't getting her out if it's raining.
31:50Well, you're not getting Lucy out if it's raining.
31:52But we already know that she's really snuggly.
31:54She's used to sleeping on the bed and all of that kind of stuff.
31:57I would take my time with Fox.
31:59Well, let's see how you get on.
32:01Let's see how Fox is when you meet him.
32:04OK.
32:05Happy?
32:06Happy.
32:07Well, clearly, yeah.
32:08Oh, my God.
32:12OMG.
32:13OMG.
32:18Because he's called Fox.
32:19What colour do you think?
32:21Ginger.
32:22Yeah.
32:24Lucy was born at 25 weeks.
32:27We couldn't hold her, but she was...
32:29Tiny.
32:30Yeah, she'd fit in the palm of your hand.
32:32This is amazing.
32:34Are you bursting?
32:36Yeah.
32:37We didn't actually know that she had cerebral palsy, did we, at first?
32:42It was her annual review that they said that she's got cerebral palsy
32:48and it will affect her sort of lifelong...
32:53I do a big gulp.
32:55A big gulp?
32:56I feel nervous.
32:57Oh, Lucy.
32:58Oh, Lucy.
32:59Don't be nervous.
33:02OK, let's go up here.
33:05Her cerebral palsy affects her, obviously, physically.
33:11Oh, my goodness.
33:13Yeah.
33:14She's really lucky that she's got all the understanding and humour and emotions and all of that.
33:21But that obviously makes it tricky for her sometimes because she knows that she isn't the same.
33:28Yeah.
33:29Here we are.
33:30Can I get some treats?
33:31Yeah.
33:32She's quite independent in terms of she knows what she wants to do and what she doesn't want to do.
33:38If he's been astray, then he might not know how to play.
33:43Oh, you too.
33:45You're so kind.
33:47She wants to have moved out by the time she's...
33:50Is it 26?
33:51She wants to get married and then she wants to live with her boyfriend and then they'll both have a dog each.
33:57And she wants to be a spy.
34:00And save the world.
34:02What do you think he'd like?
34:03Salmon and trout?
34:04Or what?
34:06Or these?
34:07Oh, chicken.
34:08What do you reckon that is?
34:09Chicken?
34:10Yes.
34:11It's sort of typically at that age where, yeah, you want that independence away from your parents, really.
34:17Having any type of independence is very different for Lucy.
34:21How long do you think we're going to wait?
34:24Nearly now.
34:25Maybe any moment, Lucy.
34:26Maybe any moment, Lucy.
34:27Maybe any moment now.
34:28Any moment now.
34:29Any moment now.
34:31Come on in, good boy.
34:33Big day for you, Mr Fox, isn't it?
34:36Yeah.
34:37Just got to try and be as brave as you can.
34:40Stay calm.
34:44Deep breath.
34:45Deep breath.
34:48She'll feel really proud having her own dog.
34:51Yeah.
34:52You know, she'll feel grown up and she'll want to tell people, this is my dog, won't she?
34:57Yeah.
34:58And that would feel like she's a bit more independent.
35:01Up you go.
35:02Come on.
35:04Come on, let's go.
35:06Oh.
35:08Oh, my God.
35:09Are you ready?
35:14Come on in.
35:15Yes.
35:16Good boy.
35:17Hiya.
35:18I'm Maya.
35:19And this is Little Fox.
35:21Hello.
35:22Good boy.
35:23He might just sniff around for a minute.
35:24He can be quite shy to start with.
35:26Hello.
35:28Come on in.
35:29I don't think she can quite believe that it's a Pomeranian that's walked in the door.
35:35Foxy!
35:37He's a worried little thing.
35:38Now, it does take him time to warm up and he can be a bit aloof.
35:43Poor little thing.
35:44Yeah.
35:46I know Lucy would really like a dog to sit on her lap, wouldn't she?
35:51What we're trying to do is go...
35:52Is get him up here.
35:53Up here.
35:54To get closer.
35:55Up here so you can see him.
35:57Lucy wants to see your little face.
35:59Good boy.
36:00Good boy.
36:01Good boy.
36:02Good boy.
36:03That's a great line.
36:04It's OK.
36:05Now see if you can put...
36:06Go up the next step.
36:08Fox.
36:10Fox.
36:11Foxy.
36:12Fox.
36:13You get it?
36:14Can I hold him?
36:15We can't hold him yet, Lucy.
36:16No.
36:17I think he needs to...
36:18He needs to be...
36:19Trust.
36:20Yeah, trust.
36:21Exactly.
36:22That takes time.
36:23Trust.
36:24That can take quite a long time.
36:25For someone to look after you.
36:26It's alright, darling.
36:27Fox.
36:28Paul.
36:29Paul.
36:30Paul.
36:31Paul.
36:32Paul.
36:33Paul.
36:34Can I hold him?
36:35Can I hold him?
36:36We can't hold him yet, Lucy.
36:37I think he needs to...
36:38He needs to be...
36:39Trust.
36:40Paul.
36:41Paul.
36:42Paul.
36:43Please.
36:44Play with me.
36:45Play with me.
36:49I just...
36:50I just want to be friends with him.
36:52Yeah.
36:53I know.
36:54Fox isn't obviously gonna...
36:55Just come and curl up on your lap today, Lucy.
36:58Or maybe not even in a week.
37:00And he doesn't like being picked up.
37:03OK.
37:06Lucy.
37:07Are you worried that he's not going to be friendly enough with you?
37:13Yeah.
37:14Yeah.
37:15You want to meet Poppy?
37:16Yes.
37:17OK.
37:18I think that's a good idea.
37:19Yeah?
37:20Just see.
37:21Yeah.
37:22Alright then.
37:23I'll take this little man out.
37:24Bye, Fox.
37:25Sorry, Fox.
37:26He's a little bird.
37:27No, don't feel bad.
37:29Don't feel bad.
37:30See the next...
37:31The next one.
37:32Yeah.
37:43Maybe Poppy will be in soon.
37:45Just now.
37:46Maybe Poppy will be in soon.
37:47And she won't go out in the rain.
37:49Just like you.
37:50Suits you.
37:51Very lucky day.
37:52Yeah.
37:53Lucy is a really positive person.
37:54There are obviously times when...
37:55It's all too much.
37:56She just...
37:57Yeah.
37:58And she asks why and says, why am I like this?
37:59I wish I wasn't in pain.
38:00Which is heartbreaking.
38:02And you just wish you could take it away, but you can't unfortunately.
38:19Coming in.
38:20Good girl.
38:22We want to do something that will make her happy and Lucy having a dog would just give her a bit of joy.
38:28And Lucy having a dog would just give her a bit of joy.
38:31Yeah, and be her new best friend, effectively.
38:35I heard something.
38:37Come on, let's go.
38:39Oh, you're not going to do the steps, no?
38:42Come on.
38:46Oh, Poppy!
38:49This is Poppy.
38:51Hello, Poppy.
38:53Come on.
38:53Do you feel comfortable with me leaving her here with you
38:56so you two can have a little chat and interaction together?
38:59Come on, Poppy.
39:01Come here.
39:02She looks so friendly.
39:03Oh, she does look friendly, doesn't she?
39:05Can we sit?
39:07I think she can sit.
39:09Poppy, sit.
39:11She's sitting.
39:13Can I hold her?
39:15Come on, you can climb up here, darling.
39:18Poppy, look.
39:20Poppy.
39:22Good girl.
39:24Here she is.
39:25That's lovely.
39:27That's so much better.
39:28Poppy, come.
39:30Hello, Poppy.
39:32Come on, Poppy.
39:33Come on.
39:34Come and sit on my lap.
39:36Oh, yes.
39:37I mean, she'll definitely curl up on your bed.
39:41Won't she?
39:43Find a stick.
39:45She's held on to that stick for how long?
39:47Six years.
39:48We've not had the chat.
39:49Dogs and sticks don't go together.
39:51No.
39:51Three, two, one.
39:54Poppy.
39:54Poppy.
40:02She's not interested in the stick.
40:04I'm not sure that she's really a stick kind of girl.
40:12That's okay.
40:15I don't want a stick anymore.
40:17Okay, get rid of it.
40:18She doesn't want it.
40:19We don't need it.
40:20No.
40:22Poppy.
40:24Come on, Poppy.
40:25Come on.
40:26Good girl.
40:27Go on, her.
40:28Come on, you.
40:30Come to see Lucy.
40:31Come to see Lucy.
40:32This is Lucy, Poppy.
40:35Oh.
40:35She said hello to you.
40:38She loved me.
40:39Poppy.
40:41Poppy.
40:42Poppy.
40:43She really wants to get...
40:45Yeah.
40:45...onto Lucy.
40:47But she can't work out how to do it.
40:49Maybe there's another one, look.
40:51Oh.
40:53So she's in front of you.
40:54So sweet.
41:00Oh, I love it.
41:01Just building a bridge to Lucy.
41:04Poppy, up here.
41:06Up here.
41:07Come on.
41:09Come on.
41:11Good girl.
41:12Come on.
41:14Good girl.
41:15Come on.
41:18Now here.
41:19Good girl.
41:24Lucy, she acts as a bit of an inspiration, really.
41:28Good girl.
41:33To see a big smile on her face and her find a dog and a companion is incredibly special.
41:41She deserves everything that she can get out of life, really.
41:45I do.
41:49Lucy.
41:50I do love her.
41:51Tell Lucy.
41:52Poppy, I love you.
41:57You're a perfect dog for me, I guess.
42:00She's my dog.
42:02Yeah.
42:02They love her.
42:04Aww.
42:04I love Kit and she's not a ball, really.
42:08No, she talked to her.
42:09Love you, Poppy.
42:10I thought Coconut was adorable, but I don't think Nala was too sure.
42:32He wanted Nala to play, but she couldn't see what she was supposed to be playing with,
42:36and he couldn't quite grasp that.
42:38But, yeah, we weren't sure if it was the right choice.
42:42But after spending more time with him, we took him home.
42:47Bolt.
42:49Nala.
42:51Hello.
42:52Yay.
42:55Hi.
42:56Hi, you two.
42:58We thought he looked like Bolt off the movie Bolt, and it kind of just stuck.
43:04From the moment we brought Bolt home, they got on so perfectly, they got in the car together.
43:12I think Nala knew he was a bit scared, so she put her paw over him, and that was it.
43:17They cuddled Nellie all the way home.
43:19Not too fast.
43:20Come on, then.
43:21He's built her confidence, no end.
43:23Go on, then.
43:24Poppy.
43:25She's attempted the zoomies, and she hasn't done that for a long time.
43:30Bolt has brought out Nala's inner puppiness.
43:33You know, that sort of cheekiness and silliness that Shahad lost, it's just back again.
43:40And I think she's much happier now.
43:42Mushy was lovely.
43:50It's just this little bundle of white fluff.
43:54So fluffy.
43:55Yeah.
43:56We were both pretty sure straight away that we would take Mushy home.
44:02When we first brought him home, he was very calm, and he was super gentle.
44:10And then, in the second week, he didn't seem happy in our home.
44:18Every single small thing would make him really anxious.
44:23He started to become a little bit more aggressive.
44:27He bit me, but I was able to deal with that.
44:33But at the point where he became so unpredictable, it just felt untenable.
44:38Yeah.
44:39Unfortunately, I had to drive him back to Wood Green.
44:44Good boy.
44:45Fox was a lovely dog, but it didn't feel like there was really that connection between Fox and Lucy.
45:02Then, to see Lucy and Poppy interact, and they just seemed really comfortable around each other.
45:10And Lucy was adamant that we took Poppy home with us.
45:13Yeah.
45:14Poppy, come on.
45:15Where are the treats?
45:17In the bag.
45:18Oh, God.
45:20Oh, God.
45:22My gosh.
45:23It's just demolished the whole bag.
45:25You're greedy.
45:26Very funny, too.
45:27Poppy was officially named Poppy Stardust, and she's slotted in perfectly.
45:35Poppy's favourite spot is in Lucy's bed.
45:38Poppy.
45:39Yeah, the bond is lovely.
45:42Poppy, come on.
45:44The first few nights, Lucy said, I haven't slept, because Poppy snores.
45:49And I said, oh, no, do you want her to be out of your room?
45:51And she said, no, I'll just get used to it.
45:53Lucy's happier, isn't she?
45:57A bit more content.
45:59When Poppy's in her room, if I have to give her a drink or something, and then she says,
46:03OK, you can go now.
46:05I don't need you.
46:07I've got my friend.
46:08Poppy, Stardust, and Lucy, they're happy together.
46:11Love you, Poppy.
46:12Love you, Poppy.
46:12Love you, Poppy.
46:12Love you, Poppy.
