00:00Not since 2005 has the city of Charlotte, North Carolina been under an ice storm warning.
00:06So the folks in this area know this winter storm is a big deal and that window to prepare
00:12is closing. Now it's all going to boil down to the trees and the power lines and just how much
00:16ice accumulates on the trees. Now if they get about a quarter of an inch of ice that could
00:21weigh up to 100 pounds more on the tree limbs. If you get a half of an inch of ice the game
00:27really changes up to 500 more pounds because ice is very dense and very thick as we all know very heavy.
00:34Power lines will not be able to withstand that kind of weight and neither will the trees. So folks here
00:39know they could see long lasting power outages and that's the big concern. So the North Carolina
00:46Department of Transportation has been prepping the roads. They got that done around Thursday
00:51afternoon. Now starting Saturday afternoon they're going to start salting the major roads here all
00:56the thoroughfares. They're also trying to tackle some of the major bridges in mecklenburg county
01:01to hopefully get folks around that need to get around. But if we get a half of an inch of ice in
01:06this area or more, no vehicle can drive on that including four wheel drives or all wheel drives that glaze
01:13just no match for that kind of weather. So folks know the time now is to prepare and hopefully they'll be
01:20ready when this storm comes. Reporting from charlotte north carolina i'm leslie hudson for ackee weather
