00:00Leeds City Council is proposing a series of improvements to streets surrounding schools
00:06in Middleton and Holton Moor designed to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more
00:12accessible for children, families and local residents. Elements Primary School in Middleton
00:17along with Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School and College in Holton Moor are busy schools where
00:24most pupils live within a 10-minute walking distance. However, these schools see a higher
00:30than average number of pupils travelling by car, adding pressure to already congested streets.
00:36The areas around the schools currently experience heavy traffic at drop-off and pickup times,
00:42with cars parking on pavements causing narrow pathways. There's also poor lighting in the area
00:48and a lack of safe crossings. These conditions can make active travel feel unsafe and difficult,
00:55particularly for children and those with mobility needs. The proposals aim to tackle these issues by
01:01widening pavements and paths, improving junction layouts, introducing both formal and informal
01:08crossing points, installing bollards to protect pavements and enforce parking rules while upgrading
01:14lighting. Six schools across Middleton and Holton Moor are set to benefit, including Elements Primary
01:20School, Cockburn Lawrence Calvert Academy, Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School and College
01:26Corpus Christi Catholic College.
