00:00Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Caribbean Division, Michael A. Miranda, describes fentanyl
00:07as one of the most lethal substances in circulation today, stressing that even trace amounts can
00:14result in death.
00:16Speaking under the Fentanyl Free America Initiative, Miranda emphasizes that the drug's potency
00:22has transformed the narcotics landscape, making accidental overdoses far more likely, even
00:28among first-time users.
00:30A lot of the deaths that we've observed, the poisonings that we've noticed, are people that
00:34weren't even aware that there was fentanyl inside of a pill that they took.
00:37Maybe they bought a pill on the black market, maybe they bought the pill, it was unprescribed.
00:43But fentanyl is extremely dangerous.
00:45About six grams of salt is about all you need for it to be a fatal dose.
00:51Miranda sells the role of the U.S. Embassy.
00:54And the DEA is strengthening intelligence sharing, law enforcement cooperation and interdiction
01:01efforts aimed at disrupting trafficking networks operating in the region.
01:05He also issued a direct warning to the youth, particularly as the festive season approaches, urging
01:12them to avoid illicit substances altogether, noting that with fentanyl now present, experimentation
01:19can have irreversible consequences.
01:22The carnival's coming up.
01:23I want people to have a good time.
01:25I want them to enjoy themselves.
01:26But I want them to be safe.
01:28If a pill is not prescribed to you, I would advise people to stay away from them.
01:35I would advise people not to take them.
01:37You can still have a great time without getting involved with things that you have no idea
01:40where they're coming from.
01:42Safety is paramount.
01:43But, you know, enjoy yourself.
01:45Have a great time.
01:46It is Trinidad.
01:47Enjoy the steel band.
01:48It's a great place to be from what I understand.
01:52But also be safe and be smart.
