Transcript
00:0094.7 The Black, New York's number one for throwbacks. It's Shelly Wave. You already
00:12heard from her earlier, but let's get back into it with Daytime Emmy Award-winning talk
00:17show host, actress, comedian, and best-selling author, Shari Shepard!
00:23Yay! So you just kicked off a comedy tour. Listen, this is what you do. You make us
00:31laugh. And so what made you do a comedy tour of this magnitude right now? Because I love
00:37doing stand-up. I started out doing stand-up with everybody you know, Jamie Foxx, D.L. Hughley,
00:42Monique, Cat Williams. So it's nice to see Lil Rel, to see everybody flourish. And I love
00:49making people laugh. So I've always wanted to do a tour. So they set me up with a tour,
00:54my agency. And I'm having so much fun. So how can we get tickets to the tour? Well,
00:59I'm going to give away to you a pair of tickets for my show January 31st, and that is in Patchogue.
01:07And then in January 30th, I'm in Norwalk, Connecticut. So I'll give away a pair of tickets.
01:12So you give away a pair of tickets. But then they can also go to SherryShepard.com or
01:17SherryShowTV.com to get tickets. Okay, sounds amazing. So don't start calling just yet,
01:23because we want to chop it up with Sherry a little bit longer. Okay. So first of all,
01:29also I want to say congratulations on your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Thank you so much. I
01:34know all your girls showed up for it. Everybody was there. Tyler Perry flew in just to, you know,
01:40Speak, and Niecy Nash came. She had gotten off a plane and came straight, you know, when she did
01:46her glam, then she came straight to the star ceremony. So those were the two that spoke for
01:51me. And then Kim Whitley, she also spoke. And it was, my family came out. My son was there.
01:58He just showed out. I loved it. He would have shook everybody's hands. I loved it. It was great.
02:03Everybody that meant something to you. What did you see?
02:05All the comics. Joe Tori, Guy Tori, just like every comic was a little real Howery was there.
02:12It was, it was just to see all of my comedian friends was, I loved it. What did it mean for
02:20you? I mean, that little girl going back to when you were a little girl, could you have dreamed
02:24of this? And what did it mean to you to receive it? I did dream about this one because my star is
02:29on Argyle in Hollywood, right in front of the W Hotel. I used to live when I was a struggling comic,
02:34no money in a studio apartment on Argyle in Franklin. Wow. It was infested with so many
02:40creepy crawlies. It wouldn't even, I paid 325, 325 or 350 for this studio apartment. And I had no
02:46money. So I would just roam, walk down Hollywood Boulevard in sunset and look at the stars. And
02:52I would go, Lord, I wonder if I could have one of those. That was one of the dreams I never told
02:56anybody. And so when it came true, I was just so thankful. And it really, I just would imagine
03:02what would my life be like with the star. And I've gone through so much being evicted
03:07and, you know, going to jail and car being repossessed and in crazy relationships. So
03:13that star meant something to me. It really, it meant this journey that I was on was not
03:18for nothing. And right now I'm in, I'm in front of Frank Sinatra and back of Sammy Davis
03:24Jr. across the street from Mariah Carey, down the street from JLo, a block away from Janet
03:30and Niecy Nash is Kitty Corner because she's on Argyle in Hollywood. But she's in front of the
03:37CBS. I'm in front of the W Hotel. So when I go out there, I go look at her star and I dust it
03:42out. She's supposed to be cleaning my star. But the last time I was over there was a man laying
03:46on my star. I said, yeah, I made it. I got a man laying on top of me.
03:52That is hilarious. Also, congratulations on your NAACP Image Award nomination. Four. You got multiple.
03:58Yeah, four. Four nominations. For the talk show and for your. Talk show hosts. Outstanding talk
04:03show hosts. Outstanding talk show. Best supporting actress in the movie Straw. I played the bank
04:08manager, Nicole. Shout out to Tyler Perry. Shout out to Tyler. And for the collectively for the movie
04:14Straw. So four nominations. Congratulations. I'm very excited. Girl, I can't even believe it.
04:20And you got a vote. Oh yes, vote. I was going to say because for the NAACP Image Awards, it's the
04:25fans that vote. So somebody wins because the fans voted. So you can vote. You can go to the website
04:31and vote. It's four different categories. You can vote for me. And I understand it might be some other
04:37favorites because my sis Tiana, she's also nominated for best supporting actress. She got 92 nominations
04:43for the NAACP Image Awards. So we can find something. Even if you go back and forth with Tiana and me
04:49for best talk show host. One of my favorites, Don Lemon is also nominated. Wow. He is now living his
04:56best life not working on CNN. Don Lemon ready to fight you as a journalist. He will tell you in a
05:02minute, don't touch me. Yeah. Say my name. Yeah. So I know everybody loves Don Lemon. That's my
05:07heaviest competition. Okay. So you guys vote for Sherry though. Vote for Sherry. And then, you know,
05:13spread the wealth. Spread the wealth. But since we're talking about the talk show, I know you do
05:17hot topics. I wanted to cover a couple of hot topics with you real quick. So I really am interested
05:22in your opinion on this and Jeffrey. Okay. A new poll says 47% of parents say that profanity is never
05:31okay from their children. I have seen grown ass people cursing in front of their parents and I'm
05:38appalled by it. But what do you think about kids? Can Jeffrey curse in front of you? Girl, I know my son
05:44be cursing. In front of you? No, never, never, ever. Because, but I remember back in the day when I was a
05:50teenager, I curse. I never cursed in front of adults. Okay. I always cursed in front of my friends. So
05:55that is how I know Jeffrey does. He will go, Oh, shh. Because he hears me do it. You know, and I told
06:02Jeffrey, I said, there's certain words that I just don't want to hear. You know, so Jeffrey does not
06:06curse in front of me. But however, he is a boy and I know these kids curse. Like even when he got his
06:12acceptance letter into college, everybody was making a big deal. They made a video for me to watch.
06:16They're making a big deal of the acceptance letter. And he goes, gee, dang it. And that's, that's a fun word
06:22I say. And I was like, is that my son? And my niece said, auntie, he curts like a sailor. I, I,
06:29whoo. So he's being respectful saying gee dang it. Yeah. No, he didn't say gee dang it. Oh, he
06:34said gee dang it. Oh, okay. He said the word. Okay. I can't say it because I want you to keep your
06:38radio show. Okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. You're, you're keeping a PG for me. I think kids are going
06:44to curse. I think that you have to teach them not around adults. There are certain places because
06:49it's just going to be kids. And that's what, you know, that's what we did. So I don't, for
06:54me, I don't have a problem. I know that Jeffrey does, but he better be respectful.
06:58What would happen if he said a curse word around you? My head would swivel 360. It would literally
07:03be like a Chucky doll. Like you said, what, what are you? I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm
07:07going to what? Now we don't play that. Okay. The final hot topic, Sherry Shepard, Channing Tatum
07:13after already, you know what I'm talking about? After already being successful with
07:18clubs in London and Vegas, opening a magic mic club here in New York city. Thoughts?
07:24Girl, I don't know if I can read, I don't know if I can bring up my stripper days going
07:28to the club, going to the club. I had all my ones. I was making it rain. I mean, you
07:33know, when you go to the club, it's certain lingo. Come on over here. Come on. Shake
07:36it, shake it, shake it. I don't think you are a good stripper club goer unless you break
07:43three chairs and I have broken some chairs. We were talking about this on air the other
07:47day, how women, when you go to strip clubs, we are way more lethal than men when we go
07:52to strip clubs. Oh yeah, women. You are riding the, the, the, the male dancers. I've seen
07:57women do stuff they would never do in the bedroom with their husband, with the stripper. They're
08:01doing it with the stripper. The freak comes out when, when these strippers, I used to open
08:05and do stand up for the Chippendale dancers, like way back in the day. And these women, they were
08:11like, we don't want no comedy. Who said we want to laugh? Get them out here and take
08:14those clothes off. So, oh my gosh. I love that magic mic is coming. Where do you go? It's
08:20going to be at the old Copacabana spot. I would go just to have a ladies night. Cause sometimes
08:25you just got to go and act crazy. I would love to go and make it rain, but I always tell them
08:29don't pick me up because one time a stripper picked me up and turned me upside down and my
08:33ponytail fell off. You know how embarrassing that was? Oh my God. My ponytail, you know the
08:37one that you pull the string, pull the string. He turned me upside down and I was like, and
08:41I kept telling him, don't do that. That ponytail fell right off my head, girl. Then they picked
08:46it up and started swinging it. I said, oh my gosh, this don't make no kind of sense. And
08:51now I'm at this age where I'm like, do you have to change for a 20, sir? Cause I'm not
08:55going to give you the whole 20. You don't have to work for that 20. But I would go with my
08:59girlfriend. So you have to invite me when you go. Oh yes, that would be fun. Shelley and
09:03Sherry, magic mic. We're on it. That's right. We're on it. So the tour is called Make It
09:09Make Sense. Yes. Cause I'm dealing with stuff. I just, things have to make sense. It's like
09:15ghosting. You go out, you have a great time and then they don't call you back anymore.
09:21Let me tell you what a man hates to hear. These phrases. So what are we doing? What are we
09:25doing? Or what's next? All I said was when we went out to dinner, what's next? I wasn't trying
09:32to, you didn't have to put a ring on it. Just what's next? Never hear from a person
09:36again. I like the man who says, remember when they used to give you a paper and it
09:40said, would you be my girlfriend? Check yes or check no. It was so sweet. Now they see
09:45you text Shelley and it's like, why? It's like W Y D. I was like, wash your drawers. What
09:51is, what? If I've been, it means what are you doing? I don't like those kinds of texts,
09:56you know, call me on the phone. Let's talk. Let's have a conversation. Let's go somewhere.
10:02It is a struggle out here for, I'm single too. It's a struggle. I understand that you
10:08on your talk show are going to have something in February, um, dedicated to single. Yes,
10:13we have a season and singles club where it's like, I wanted women to come together and it's
10:18a movement. You know, we're in the season of our lives. We're having fun. We're taking
10:21big risks. We got jobs we love and we're doing the darn thing. And, but I believe that
10:26we're open for love. No man bashing on, on the website. It's just supporting each other.
10:31Like I put on there that I just don't know how to flirt. Yeah. I was on the plane. A man
10:35helped me with my luggage. He was gorgeous. And I said, hi, what do you do? And he said,
10:40I'm a pilot. And I'm like a pilot. I go, did you wash your hands? Like I get my son mixed
10:45up with this pilot. And he's looking at me like, did I wash my hands? Lady, like I just put
10:51your luggage up in the, in the thing. But that was your flirt? That was my flirt. I need
10:55to learn how to flirt because my TikTok therapist, very cheap by the way. I have
10:59all my therapists on TikTok. They say that I should be dating between six and 10 men
11:04a week. What? Do you have time? Girl, I don't have, nor do I have the memory to date
11:09six, between six and 10 men. I'm going to forget. But six and 10 men, that's 24 to 40
11:14men a month. I can't date 10 men at one time. I can't either. So, you know, I don't know.
11:21I'm all that ghosting. I don't know what to do. It's, I got to take it slow.
11:25Well, we talk about this on the tour. I would like to ask you though, as a fellow single
11:30woman, what exactly is your type? Wow. What are you looking for?
11:37I am looking for someone who is a king in his own territory. He's got to be, he's got to love
11:43what he does in his own territory. He's got to be, because it's hard. You know, you're dating
11:48me. So people are going to be looking at you. They're going to want to know who you
11:51are, what you do. They're going to be Googling you. You got to be secure. And he's got to
11:56be confident enough. You have to be confident and secure. Like one person ghosted me. We
12:00had a great time at a steak restaurant in Atlanta. It was amazing. One date? It was one
12:04date. Okay. Because when I go to different cities, I always get on, I always like try to
12:09arrange a date with somebody in that city. Do you do it through, um. Maybe websites.
12:14So you do, I do. Do websites. Yeah. Okay. And so we go. You have your actual
12:18Sherry Shepard picture. Yeah. A lot of times people don't, they won't, uh, text me back
12:23because they think it's like catfish. Yeah. I would think that. I'd be like, who is this
12:27pretending they're Sherry Shepard? But what am I supposed to do? I don't want you to,
12:30you know, I'm not going to put, I don't want to put somebody's picture up on there and you
12:33think that it's me. And they show up and it's you and they're like shocked. Yeah. They're
12:38very, very shocked. So we, we went out and we had a great time, but he wasn't, so he stopped
12:43calling me. So I sent him a text maybe a month later. I said, no harm, no file. Just
12:47what happened? And he said he was a little bit intimidated because he was used, he was
12:51really good looking. He was used to getting a lot of attention. Yeah. He wasn't used to
12:55people following me to the bathroom, one coming over and wanting the autograph. The
12:59manager came, moved us to a different, a table, but that's, that could be overwhelming
13:04when people always want to take pictures and handing you the camera. Yeah. So it's, you
13:09got to give people a little bit of grace. Yeah. You can always say in your head how
13:12you would handle it until you're, until you're in that position. Yeah. And it's
13:16very, very hard. So, okay. So you're looking for someone who can withstand, withstand
13:22that. Somebody comes with being with you. You got to have a great sense of humor. You
13:26got, you got to know where you're going. You got to have a great sense of humor. Um, I
13:30would like your kids to be grown. Okay. Okay. Because I don't want no girl coming to me
13:34going, that's my daddy. And then I got to look at her and go, that's my daddy too. So how are we
13:38going to do this? You probably also, I'll square up on the, I'll square up on somebody's
13:41daughter. I'm not playing. No, yes, I will. You probably also don't want to deal with
13:46the baby mama. I don't want to deal with baby mamas because these baby mamas still be showing
13:50up at your job. Can you imagine I'm doing hot topics and somebody's like, Hey, storm the
13:55stage, storming the stage. No, we can't. That's not sexy. We can't do that. Does he have
13:59to be a certain age? Does he have to make a certain amount of money? He's got to be a 45 and
14:04above. Okay. I young, the young ones here. I don't want you to be traumatized. I, you
14:09know, it's got to be grown and sexy. You got to be grown and sexy. Would you date another
14:13celebrity or does he have to be a regular person? I have ham run ins with celebrities.
14:17Okay. That doesn't work as well. It doesn't work as well because celebrities are used to
14:21being, especially men. Y'all so doggone narcissists. They like all of the ha. So it's a little bit
14:28harder. They don't want you competing for attention. Yeah. It's that's what I have found a lot
14:32with, you know, I went out with celebrities that they have a hard time with them for you
14:38too. So, you know, they, you, you gotta have a certain kind of personality when you want
14:41to date a celebrity. All right. So you do. But y'all, I would like you to own something
14:45I own. So I would like you to own. Okay. I'd like you to have goals and dreams and you
14:50know, you love God and I can't tell you everything on a date. That's what also the TikTok therapist
14:54said. Don't be telling them everything they want because they can use that against you.
14:58Okay. I'm saying TikTok is my, is my jam right there. Okay. Note to self
15:02get a TikTok therapist. Get a TikTok therapist. Don't be sharing everything that you want
15:06and need. So, but I'm, I'm really good. I mean, this is my in the meantime stage. So
15:12like while I'm open, what am I doing in the meantime? Cause a lot of women, we will say
15:16what we want. He got to look this way. He got to have, you know, abs. He got to look
15:21like, but would he want us? We said, no, we eat nice cream. Exactly. The, the man that
15:27you want with that man want you, that man that you're praying for. Is he praying for
15:31you as you are? So for, I'm in this meantime to say, there's some work I got to do. Number
15:35one, I got to get my son out the house. No man wants to see a grown man boy walk down
15:40upstairs and his drawers going, Hey bro. No, no. Is Jeffrey ready to leave? Jeffrey is
15:45like, he's about to go to college. Okay. Yes. Okay. But he told me, he was like, I don't
15:49want another man in this house. What? How are you going to tell me? Thank you. Okay. You
15:55don't even pick up your drawers. You don't want another man in this house. Is you crazy?
15:59Okay. Make that make sense. I feel like I'm in the meantime phase too, you know, cause I'm,
16:05I'm waiting for my life partner, but I am also preparing for him. Okay. So in the
16:10waiting, because that's kind of the waiting is, is very, is it passive? Are you intentional
16:14about going out to those places where they may be? To meet him? Not as much as I should
16:20be. You know, it's like, he's not going to show up at my door. No, they just don't be
16:24showing up at that door trying to find your apartment. They buzzing on the door, trying
16:27to find your house. Is the gate going? I can't get the gate open. Who's hello? The lights
16:32don't come on. I do need to be more proactive with going to the places. You have to be intentional
16:35about being out. And you know, it's like faith without works is dead. They're not going to
16:40find us while we sitting on the couch watching K dramas. You know, we have to be out and
16:44go out with our friends because that's what, it might be that person that's standing there.
16:48Yeah. You know my issue though? I go out a lot with my gay guy friends and so people,
16:53men might think. Oh, you're going to have to cut that right there. They might think that
16:55I'm with him. So yeah, I need to cut that out. You got, you got, because I have friends
16:59who are gay, but here's the problem. If you're always with your gay friends, you tend to
17:02be going places with, with them all the time. And then, so men are not going to
17:06approach you. If they're always with your gay friends. With a guy. Yeah. Like a guy's
17:10not going to come up to you. I did that. I went out for pride and wore a see-through
17:14dress, had a good time. Uh, not one person was coming up to me because I was with all
17:19my gay friends. Yeah. So I think that you have to also be intentional about going out
17:23with your girlfriends, going out by yourself. Do you go out by yourself? I do all the time. I mean,
17:29I, you know, listen, with what we do, of course we can go out by ourselves, but like,
17:33I mean, out, out, cause they're always. I go to restaurants by myself. Okay. I go to
17:37the movies by myself. I go to plays by myself. I do, I do post up at bars quite a bit. I love
17:41that. Yeah. The bars, I, I, you know, because I have to learn how to flirt. So I, so I, you
17:45know, I know I'm supposed to smile, but I'm sitting, and I don't drink. Okay. So I'm
17:48sitting there with a water. Okay. At the bar. It looks a little weird. Okay. But you
17:52know, I do go out to events by myself. Uh-huh. So yeah. And you have to be comfortable
17:58with yourself. Okay. Before you get comfortable with other people. All right. It's like so.
18:02Sherry up in here giving me dating advice. Thank you. Well, I mean, it ain't worked for
18:05me yet, but I'm just trying to. Well, um, thank you for stopping by. I loved coming by.
18:11This was fun. And you guys check out the tour. It's called Make It Make Sense. Yes. And
18:17take a nap before you come. That's what I tell everybody. Take a nap before you come. That
18:22way I can, you can have the full experience of laughter. And, and tell everyone the sites
18:27again, where they can buy tickets. You can go to SherryShepard.com to purchase tickets
18:30or SherryShowTV.com to purchase comedy tickets. Purchase tickets, guys, and watch the Sherry
18:36show every day. Every day and vote for me for the NAACP. If I can take home one, if I go home
18:42with one award, I'll be happy. You guys, Sherry Shepard on 94.7 The Block. Thank you, Sherry.
18:47We love you. Oh, thank you. Perfect. That was so much fun. Thank you. That was great.
18:53It was so much fun.
