00:00The White House is slamming California Governor Gavin Newsom for playing politics with the
00:05calendar, namely the scheduling of a special election to replace the late Republican Congressman
00:11Doug LaMaffa. Under California law, Newsom has until August 4th of this year to schedule the
00:17election, and he has chosen the date of August 4th of this year. Really taking it to the last
00:23possible moment there. This leaves Republicans with a super slim 218 to 213 majority in the House
00:30of Representatives until then. The Trump administration is calling the move, quote,
00:35really shameful for using the death of a congressman to, in their view, throw a wrench
00:40into the president's legislative agenda. With LaMaffa's death and the resignation of Congresswoman
00:44Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican-led bills will fail if just three members of the party defect.
00:50Now, this whole gambling with the calendar tactic, while shameless, isn't new and is actually a
00:55time-honored bipartisan tradition. The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, waited nearly
01:01eight months to hold an election to replace late Democratic Congressman Sylvester Turner
01:05after his passing last March. That election was eventually held this past November and resulted
01:11in a runoff scheduled for January 31st, so it's still not resolved. Now, an expected Democratic
01:17victory in that election will shrink that Republican margin in the House, the one that I just mentioned,
01:22even further.
