Republic of Congo: president declares himself candidate for elections

The Republic of Congo is set to vote for its next president on 12 and 15 March. Denis Sassou N'Guesso first became leader of the country in 1979, and then returned to power in 1997 after a five-year break due to war. He has been president ever since.

00:11officially announced on Thursday that he would run for president in next month's elections.
00:18The announcement comes with little surprise to most of the population.
00:24For several months already, officials and party leaders have repeatedly asked the president
00:29to run for his own office during the elections, set for 12th and 15th of March.
00:37Sassoon-Gesso has been president of the country without interruption since 1997.
00:44The 82-year-old is now running for his fifth term as president.
00:50The ruling Congolese Labour Party already confirmed in December
00:54that it would support Sassoon-Gesso as its candidate.
00:58While several opposing candidates have also declared that they would be running,
01:04the chances at winning are slim to non-existent,
01:08as experts and long-term observers of the political situation in the country fear.
