00:00We're expecting this legislation to pass through the Senate later tonight with Liberal
00:06Party support.
00:07We're expecting the National Party will move its own amendments after abstaining from a
00:12vote earlier today in the House of Representatives.
00:15So we expect that legislation will go to a final vote around 10.30 tonight before being
00:20brought back to the lower house first thing tomorrow morning for final approval.
00:25This legislation really has been a moving feast for the last week with positions changing.
00:32Opposition leader Susan Lee last week described the proposed legislation as pretty unsalvageable
00:37but today has brought her Liberal Party in to support Labor's legislation with some key
00:43amendments including axing racial vilification provisions even though they were a recommendation
00:50of anti-Semitism envoy Gillian Siegel.
00:53There's also a tightening of the definition of what constitutes a hate group and expanding
00:58ministerial powers to cancel visas.
01:03So let's have a listen to senior Liberal backbencher and Jewish Australian Julian Lisa who explained
01:11how the Liberal Party came to this position.
01:14The Bondi represents a moment of choice and the choice the Liberal Party makes this morning
01:19as we have always done is to stand with the Jewish community and law abiding Australians.
01:25It's the choice to be constructive to pass this legislation as a step in the right direction.
01:31That's the choice the Liberal Party has made.
01:33But the choice for the government of the day does not end today.
01:37The choice for the Albanese government is in the implementation.
01:40The test for the government is how it uses these new laws.
01:45So despite this position the coalition today did use question time to continue its attack
01:51of the Labor government and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's handling of the rise of anti-Semitism
01:57in Australia asking him four times if he would personally apologise to Jewish Australians.
02:05Can the Prime Minister just humble himself for once and simply say sorry?
02:11Order.
02:12I've said I feel the weight of responsibility for an atrocity that happened whilst I'm Prime
02:17Minister.
02:18And as I have said, I am sorry that this occurred.
02:22Sorry for the grief and pain that the Jewish community and our entire nation have experienced.
02:27Our responsibility is to channel that grief, that pain, that anger into meaningful action.
02:34Meaningful action.
02:35Making a difference.
02:36And that is what I have striven to do.
02:39Now, while the government only needs the support of the Liberal Party in the Senate, the Greens have
02:45been staunchly opposed to this legislation, which leader Larissa Waters has described as
02:50chilling, arguing it will impact on free speech and also the right to protest, Jo.
02:56And does it look like the gun laws will pass?
02:59It does.
03:00So, conversely, the gun legislation does have Greens support to get through the Senate.
03:05We understand that will go to a vote in the next hour or so.
03:10The National Party in particular has been opposed to this legislation, arguing that it unfairly
03:14targets law-abiding gun owners.
03:17Nevertheless, this legislation does seek to tighten import controls on certain firearms.
03:23It allows for a national gun buyback scheme, though the details of that will still have to
03:28be worked out with state and territory governments.
03:31And it also toughens security checks for people seeking to own guns.
03:35It improves information sharing between ASIO, the AFP, and state authorities.
03:42So, this is all unfolding tonight.
03:45And as I say, that legislation is expected to go to a vote in the next hour or so in the
03:49upper house.
03:50And as I say, that legislation, very aptly is calculated.
03:54And as I say, that legislation is expected to take open, if it does not respond to any
04:01simply what you want to do with DOC, the該 action, which means it is forced to
04:03will be paid to a vote in the Haul.
