00:00He cracked us up as a nurse, Morgan Tookers, on The Mindy Project, and grabbed an Emmy nod for his turn as Hollywood super agent Sal Saperstein in the smash hit comedy The Studio.
00:10But when he's not making audiences belly laugh...
00:12How long have you worked with Sonya?
00:13Eight years.
00:14He's like the only person I've never been even mildly annoyed with.
00:17Like, I've been angry at you guys twice in this ride.
00:20Ike Barinholtz is known for being an everyday good guy who does stuff like this.
00:24Should we hide? Just gotta get underneath here.
00:26Those in the biz and outside can attest to this.
00:28Oh, my God. She came around the side.
00:30No, no, no, no.
00:31I saw what looked like three breaking into her house.
00:34Hi.
00:35What's happening?
00:36My wife and I, we met Sonya almost nine years ago.
00:39This is my second family.
00:40She truly is the nicest person I've ever met.
00:44It's a little dark.
00:45Wait.
00:46This cabin is literally just sitting on top.
00:47Oh, my God.
00:48You think we need all new wiring plus a new roof?
00:50Yeah.
00:52Oh, man.
00:54Sonya's home is very important to her.
00:56Say hello to my little friend.
00:57She really does want it to stay in her family for generations.
01:01This is giving it a complete second life.
01:04This is insane, guys.
01:05You've changed our lives so much.
01:07And there's nothing I wouldn't do for you.
01:13Gosh.
01:13Tell me this.
01:27Being honest.
01:28Yeah.
01:28Can you be a difficult person to work for?
01:30Or do you think you're a pretty chill boss?
01:32I think I am a very chill boss.
01:35I think I love to cook food and make food for people and let them taste it.
01:42I think I'm very easygoing.
01:44But with that said, there's times where, you know, I can't find my car, Keith.
01:52And if I'm just home alone with Sonya, I'll go, God, and then I'll just hear, like, them jingling.
02:01She's like, they're here.
02:02And I'm like, thank you so much, Sonya.
02:04How did you know?
02:05Let me get my bleep button ready to go so that we're...
02:09Do you guys have a bleep button in the budget?
02:11How long have you worked with Sonya?
02:12Eight years.
02:13Eight plus.
02:14She's, like, the only person I've never been, like, even mildly annoyed with.
02:19She's, like, the most...
02:20Like, I've been angry at you guys twice in this ride.
02:24She's the nicest person ever.
02:27You know, when you work a lot, you need help.
02:29And that's really important.
02:31Kind of who you find, who you trust to be with your kids and make sure that they're taken care of.
02:38She's, like, full stop our family.
02:41Like, she's, like, a member of the family.
02:43Speaking of being difficult to work with, I spoke with Seth Rogen this morning.
02:46Yes.
02:47And apparently you are a tyrant.
02:50Listen, I have my demands and I have my standards.
02:53And I'm not going to let, you know, his easygoing Canadian nature get in the way of my excellence.
03:00How is it on the studio?
03:01Is it, like, an explosion of fun and you never get any work done because you're just laughing the whole time?
03:04I laughed more at that than anything I had done in a long time acting.
03:09And then also you throw in Catherine Han.
03:11Yeah.
03:12Catherine O'Hara.
03:13Yeah.
03:13Oh, my gosh.
03:14She's incredible.
03:15But it's a great show and it's really nice to see people are responding to it.
03:19Did you get into comedy first or acting first or...?
03:21Well, kind of both.
03:23I was at college and I wasn't vibing.
03:27And I knew I wanted to do something with movies or TV.
03:34But I didn't know how to start.
03:35I went back home to Chicago and I saw an improv show.
03:38And it made me laugh so hard that I was like, I'm doing this.
03:42So I signed up for improv classes the next day.
03:45And this is in the mid-90s.
03:47Yeah, I haven't looked back ever since.
03:49And one of these days I'm going to get it right.
03:51And here we are.
03:54Is this called casual stalking?
03:57There's nothing casual about it.
03:58It took me months of planning.
04:00All right.
04:00Right.
04:01We will do...
04:02Which one is it?
04:03Is it this one?
04:04This guy right here, yeah.
04:05Yeah.
04:06Wait, which way?
04:07We're going this way?
04:07We're going this way.
04:08Okay.
04:08I was nervous.
04:09I was nervous to see Sonia because this is a person I've seen pretty much every day for the last eight years.
04:15But all of a sudden I'm on her turf.
04:17It's locked.
04:18I'm right on this side.
04:18I'm joking.
04:19Oh, it's open.
04:19Got it.
04:20Okay.
04:21Should we hide?
04:26Yeah.
04:26Hide.
04:29Just kind of get underneath here.
04:32Is this necessary?
04:34Oh, God.
04:35Oh, my God.
04:36Oh, my God.
04:36No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
04:41Hi.
04:42Hi, Sonia.
04:43What's happening?
04:45Hi.
04:47How are you?
04:48There was some logistical problems on my end.
04:51We came around the side, didn't she?
04:52I thought she was going to come from that front door.
04:54She came around the side here and saw what looked like three breaking into her house.
04:59Hi.
05:00How are you?
05:01Oh, my God.
05:03Oh, my God.
05:03Okay.
05:03I thought you were going to come out the front door.
05:05It's fine.
05:05It's fine.
05:06So, we love you so much, and you are such an important part of our lives and our family.
05:13We love you so much.
05:14And I know that there's some things on the house that we kind of wanted to fix and tweak.
05:21And so, I brought a couple of friends of mine right there.
05:25I don't know if you know these guys.
05:26How are you?
05:27I know you do because I know you watch shows.
05:29My favorite show.
05:30This is Drew and Jonathan.
05:32How are you?
05:33Nice meeting you.
05:33This is Sonia.
05:34We came to help take your trash out.
05:36Yeah?
05:36Yes.
05:36That's all they're doing.
05:37I recognize them because I'm a fan of their shows.
05:42I'm shocked.
05:43I don't have no words.
05:44I watch the show with my boys and say, one day, we'll do that to our house.
05:51Is there some stuff here that you think could use a little sprucing up, a little help?
05:55Um, yes.
05:56Of course.
05:57Oh, my God.
05:58This is amazing.
05:59Oh, my God.
06:00My family and I love him as a family, too.
06:02This is my second family.
06:05So, and I know the girls.
06:08I mean, they love me and I love them.
06:11My wife and I, we met Sonia almost nine years ago.
06:14And she truly is the nicest person I've ever met.
06:19In life, you have moments where you're maybe having a bad day or something's going on with
06:25you.
06:25And she has so much positive energy and so much warmth.
06:30I don't consider him as a boss.
06:31More as a family.
06:32Like, when you hang out with your family, that's how you feel in their house.
06:36It makes you feel special.
06:37You know, I know the girls love me so much.
06:40The youngest one, it was in the belly when I got to their family.
06:44So, it's like we raised the girls together, you know?
06:47They're part of my life.
06:49She is family now.
06:50She's like a friend, a sister, an aunt.
06:53She's just an absolutely beautiful person inside and out.
06:57Why don't you take us inside?
07:01Show us what you think needs work in the house.
07:03Of course.
07:04Let's go.
07:04It's a beautiful home, by the way.
07:06Oh, thank you.
07:07Sonia's home is very important to her.
07:09It's something that she's proud that she has with her family.
07:12And I think she really does want it to stay in her family for generations and generations.
07:17All right.
07:18And this is giving it a complete second life.
07:22This is it.
07:23Casa de Soni.
07:25It's a little dark.
07:27Do you like it dark and moody?
07:29Well, it's the lights.
07:30Yeah.
07:31You have a really good light.
07:32OMG.
07:37The old fist to the chin pose.
07:40We got to bring it back.
07:41That was my real estate agent card back in the day.
07:44You're serious but adorable.
07:45I trust this guy.
07:47Do you trust this guy?
07:48What's with the flooring here?
07:49You've got, is it slippery?
07:51It's very old.
07:52I can feel it dip here, too.
07:54Yeah.
07:54Kind of, yeah.
07:55How old is the house?
07:56It's from 19...
07:58Oh, eight.
07:59Oh, wow.
08:00Three World War I.
08:01Very old.
08:02You see a lot of the woodwork
08:03and a lot of the wood detail.
08:04I'm assuming you love some of that character
08:06for the home, right?
08:06Yes.
08:07These houses are so solid.
08:09It's nice to be able to modernize it a little
08:11but keep the same character.
08:13Is this wood burning?
08:14Yes.
08:15In wintertime, we just put the logs in there.
08:17And so you would like to keep a fireplace?
08:19Yes, I would like to keep the fireplace.
08:21Okay.
08:21So do you use...
08:23We don't use it as much.
08:24Yeah, yeah.
08:25That connects to the kitchen, though?
08:26No, no, it doesn't.
08:27It's just a little, yeah.
08:28Wait, what is that?
08:29That's like a door.
08:30Hold on.
08:30That was the little house for the cat.
08:32Oh, oh, I see.
08:33Okay.
08:34I want to see the kitchen.
08:36Sonya and I have bonded over food over the years.
08:39In the kitchen, we start cooking,
08:42and he talks about dishes,
08:43and I come, you know,
08:45and we share recipes in my kitchen.
08:50Oh, my gosh.
08:51It's so small.
08:53You bump each other elbow with elbow.
08:56It's hard.
08:57See, Sonya and I cook together a lot,
09:00and we spend a lot of time in our kitchen at home.
09:03So, like, a glow up in the kitchen would be great
09:05because this is a family.
09:07Like, I think Sonya and I both agree
09:09that food brings people together,
09:11brings the family together.
09:12Nothing works in this kitchen.
09:13The dishwasher doesn't work.
09:15The faucet is kind of falling down, so.
09:17Oh, this faucet is not even screwing in.
09:19Wait, this cabinet is literally just sitting on top of the fridge?
09:22It's sitting on the fridge
09:23because when we bought the fridge,
09:25the fridge was taller than this.
09:26Oh, you can break it up.
09:28Put it on top, Bill.
09:30I can see where the plaster has broken away.
09:32Yeah.
09:33So you can see the lath and plaster exposed.
09:35Your venting is not working properly.
09:37It's not working properly.
09:37You can feel it on the cabinet.
09:39You can see it in here.
09:40If your venting isn't working properly,
09:42the air quality in here is not healthy for the family.
09:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:45It makes me concerned because you can see here
09:47some of the receptacles are pushed into the wall.
09:50Yeah.
09:50I love craftsmen homes.
09:53I think they're so beautiful.
09:55And I just think, you know,
09:57you have boys who live here
09:59and they're going to have kids one day.
10:00And I just want these guys to come in
10:02and take the bones of this
10:04and make it so it's just a multi-generational home
10:07for many, many generations.
10:08I think we can make it safer.
10:10We can make it prettier.
10:11We can make it brighter.
10:12I don't think we should tell her too much more.
10:14Sony, you have to leave your own home now.
10:16I know that feels awkward to say,
10:18but we're going to go.
10:19We're putting you up at a rental place
10:21where you guys can go.
10:22And these two crazy brothers
10:25are going to do a ton of work on this house.
10:28All right.
10:29Get on.
10:29I'm going to give you a hug.
10:31Thank you so much.
10:32We've been here all my kids' life here.
10:36It's going to be forever.
10:37When one of the daughters-in-law have babies,
10:41I'll be more than happy to have kids around the house.
10:43It's the best thing that can happen to our family.
10:48So I feel that I'm so blessed.
10:52It feels like this is not happening.
10:54It feels like a dream.
10:56It's like winning a lottery.
10:58All right.
10:59I'm thinking shag carpet on the walls.
11:01Yes.
11:02Great for cooking environment.
11:03Just stroke the walls when you get anxious.
11:05My natural reaction would always be
11:07in a home like this with the footprint we have,
11:10remove this wall completely so you have connectivity.
11:12Sure.
11:12But she was adamant she wants to keep the fireplace.
11:14She wants to keep the fireplace.
11:15Would we want to open up the catio side over there?
11:18I thought that would be a nice little kind of thing
11:21so she's cooking and she's still connected
11:22to the people in that room and stuff.
11:24That felt kind of cool to me.
11:26So what do you think?
11:27Looking at this project.
11:27I think let's get started.
11:28I'm just going to go ahead and get on up here
11:30and just take a look and see what we're looking at.
11:32What are you looking for?
11:35Structural, foundational.
11:37How does it look up top?
11:38It smells like maybe a little light asbestos.
11:41So what I'm going to do, I'm going to grab the ladder
11:43and then we'll just expect.
11:43Oh, that's better.
11:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:44You guys probably have ladders and all that stuff.
11:46I'll catch you.
11:47Trust to fall.
11:49And if we fall and break it, it's part of the demo.
11:51Exactly.
11:51Boom.
11:52I noticed when we walked in
11:53that the roof was in pretty bad shape.
11:55The shingles definitely need to be replaced,
11:56but I want to check up in the attic too.
11:58Chances are nothing has been updated
12:00since the house was built.
12:01Oh my gosh.
12:03This is not good.
12:05Okay.
12:06What's not good?
12:07Talk to me.
12:08Well, first of all, there's like no insulation up here.
12:10We'd have to redo all the insulation,
12:11but it is all knob and tube
12:13and I can even see illegal tie-ins.
12:15Got it.
12:16We'll fix that.
12:18What is the roof?
12:19Do you see any leaks?
12:20It looks like the underside of the original shingles,
12:22so it doesn't even look like there's sheeting.
12:24Are you saying that you think we need all new wiring
12:26plus a new roof, insulation?
12:29Yeah.
12:29Okay.
12:30All of the above.
12:31Got it.
12:31I'm just in my mind trying to imagine
12:33what it's going to look like,
12:34and I know it's going to be a ton of work.
12:37Oh, damn.
12:37This is that feeling of being able to give something
12:41to someone that you care about so deeply
12:43and not to get too emotional and start crying,
12:47although I bet you'd like that.
12:48I can't think of a person who is more worthy of something nice,
12:53and I can't wait to see what this looks like when we're done.
12:56Are you ready for the power of the pen?
13:11This is why you guys hired me, so I can show you.
13:15Oh, I was going to show you some stuff.
13:17You want to show first?
13:17Oh, I was just going to write down some of the films and TV shows I've been on.
13:20Some of your credits?
13:21Yeah, we'll go ahead first.
13:22My background with building design,
13:24it kind of begins and ends with Legos when I was a child.
13:29What is this?
13:30Oak?
13:30Yep.
13:31I think I'm pretty good at pretending like I know what I'm talking about.
13:37Cedar.
13:39My wife is the one that has good taste,
13:41that understands how to do things and is handy.
13:43I'm not.
13:44One proposal that goes against something Sonia said,
13:48and you tell me.
13:49Yeah.
13:50Imagine how incredible this would be
13:54if we extend the kitchen down just a little bit further
13:56but eliminate the fireplace.
13:58Think of how much more open this would be
14:01if you could see all the way through.
14:04I know she loves that fireplace.
14:06So I hate to say this to such a nice guy,
14:09but the answer is no.
14:12Okay.
14:13All right.
14:14So then I'll definitely design with some kind of pass-through if we can.
14:18That would be great.
14:19My second question.
14:20They're not really using this corner,
14:22so we could very easily take this little corner of this bedroom.
14:26I don't think they would miss it at all,
14:28and we can put our fridge and our pantry over here.
14:31Yes.
14:31Flush, because right now they're blocking this door.
14:34This will open it up,
14:35then go right into the dining room.
14:36Look at that.
14:37So let's start with the floors.
14:39What are you thinking for color?
14:40You know, the house does feel a little dark in tone,
14:44so I feel like if we got like a nice brighter color like that,
14:47it would kind of brighten things up.
14:48You're going to walk in,
14:49and it feels like,
14:49oh, wow, this is a beautiful classroom home.
14:51Yeah, yeah.
14:51But it also feels more contemporary.
14:54Yes, yes, yes.
14:54That feels perfect.
14:55So brighter floors, I like that.
14:57What are we thinking for cabinetry?
14:59We would want to have some wood.
15:02Yes.
15:03In the kitchen.
15:03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:04Because it's a smaller space,
15:06I think it would be more interesting to do two-tone.
15:09Yeah.
15:09So I would have like wood and kind of a creamy white,
15:13or we could do something in a nice light sage.
15:16I kind of like this.
15:17The green?
15:17Yeah.
15:18I was hoping you would say that.
15:19Yeah, see?
15:20I think this-
15:21I'm not such a bad guy.
15:22So then how do we cap that off?
15:24I picked a few different tones
15:25that would go nice with these colors.
15:27We have the opportunity to do the counters.
15:30Love this.
15:31I love the bright color on this.
15:33I don't love, what are these called?
15:35The veins?
15:35The veins, yeah.
15:36Yeah.
15:38Got it right.
15:39All pro, all pro.
15:40Got it right.
15:41There was one that kind of had this without the vein.
15:43We could actually do something
15:44that has more kind of subtle veining like this,
15:45but in the white.
15:46In that white, yeah, that would be great.
15:47And you want to take that up, the backsplash?
15:51I think a tile backsplash would be good.
15:54I think Sony would really love that.
15:55Drew and Jonathan are so smart.
15:57They right away, like, okay, this is a big job,
15:59a lot of work, but it's going to be so worth it.
16:01Oh my God, I just, I can't, I can't wait.
16:04Kickstarting this massive job up top
16:07will repair the leaky roof
16:08and replace the improper wiring
16:10while down below,
16:11we'll also need to fix the foundation
16:13and flooring that hasn't aged well.
16:15With the structural work being done,
16:16inside, we'll refresh the molding and trim
16:19of this century-old craftsman home
16:21to maintain the character and charm
16:22for another hundred years.
16:24Sonya loves her fireplace,
16:26but the mantle desperately needs a refresh,
16:28so it's getting a dramatic glow up,
16:30creating a focal feature with colorful new tiles
16:32that pop from the minute you walk in the door.
16:35The kitchen is getting a complete makeover.
16:37After expanding the footprint of the space,
16:40we will add new appliances,
16:41two-tone cabinets, a pantry,
16:43and a pass-through to the dining room
16:45that will add more functionality to the kitchen.
16:48The dining room will feature a fine dining set,
16:50and the living room will have a luxe sectional
16:52that offers more seating.
16:54Living room, dining room, and kitchen
16:55will look and feel more connected,
16:57creating the ultimate gathering space
16:59for Sonya and her family
17:00to enjoy for years to come.
17:01I'm immediately thinking of how much easier
17:09it's going to be for them
17:10to just have a nice, easy-to-maintain household,
17:13and the kids are going to grow up
17:14and have this beautiful space.
17:15Yeah, for generations to come, man.
17:17You guys are really doing it.
17:18It's amazing.
17:18Speaking of really doing stuff,
17:20I heard you really do great impressions.
17:23Do one, and I'll see if I can guess.
17:26This house looks absolutely fantastic.
17:28I can't believe it.
17:29I can't believe that they're going to keep the fireplace,
17:30and you guys are going to make it work.
17:31It's amazing.
17:32Congratulations.
17:33You're doing a great job.
17:33I've got to go pray.
17:35Mark Wolbert.
17:36You know, I started doing impressions
17:38when I was little,
17:38and it was just kind of a thing in our house.
17:41I love the backspread.
17:43Phenomenal.
17:44You need to have, what kind of, what is this?
17:45The riffs on.
17:46Riffs on.
17:47If you don't have riffs on, just go home.
17:50It's not going to work.
17:51Thank you very much.
17:55Okay, let's do this.
18:06What are you doing?
18:08Sorry, man.
18:09Getting camera ready.
18:10I'm good.
18:11Is that a thing?
18:12Yeah, it gets rid of the puffiness of my face.
18:15I was nervous when I woke up this morning
18:16because normally when you do an acting job,
18:18you come in and you put on your hair and your makeup,
18:21and all of a sudden you're just acting,
18:22and then they call cut and you go back home,
18:24but this is real life.
18:25Whoa, let's demo.
18:27You know, my level of expertise is very low.
18:30Years ago, I was on a farm,
18:31and I hit something with a sledgehammer a few times,
18:33but that doesn't count.
18:34How do you guys want to handle this?
18:35Do you want to do, we'll just rip cabinets?
18:37Can we just do this with karate?
18:39Are you a martial artist?
18:42We're both second-degree black belts in Shotokan.
18:44National champions.
18:45They're those kind of guys where, like,
18:47you'll make a joke about something
18:49that's, like, an impossible skill to have,
18:51and they'll be like, yeah, we do that.
18:53Can you do this?
18:53Oh, my God.
18:58It's all the technique.
18:59Let me slide.
19:02And luckily, after they just made fun of me
19:05for, like, a half hour or so,
19:06the boys really were able to kind of work with me.
19:10You can just sweeten up.
19:10Oh, Jesus.
19:11Oh, my God.
19:12And show me kind of how some of this stuff was done.
19:15Think of all those directors
19:16that didn't cast you over the years.
19:18Oh, my God.
19:18Treat this as your rage room.
19:20I could destroy a whole neighborhood.
19:22Oh, yeah.
19:24Ah!
19:25Ah!
19:25Ah!
19:25Ah!
19:26Ah!
19:32One, two, three.
19:33Pull your weight.
19:33Ah!
19:36Wow.
19:37I want to see how wide the fireplace goes
19:41to see if we can open anything up,
19:42even for a pass-through.
19:45This is the area that was open.
19:51This was their original pass-through.
19:54Right.
19:55And they boarded it up.
19:56The fireplace is about what?
19:57What is that?
19:58About two and a half feet away?
19:59So, right here.
20:01Oh, yeah.
20:04There's tons of room here.
20:05We can definitely open this up.
20:07Hey, why don't you finish smashing out here
20:09the holes of the bedroom and this hole here,
20:11and then I can hit the roof.
20:12Okay.
20:13Sounds good.
20:23It's like layers and layers of shingles under there,
20:26you know?
20:26You can see.
20:27I can already see three layers.
20:28You get up there,
20:29and you kind of see the wear and tear
20:31from the roof
20:32and the insulation issue.
20:34When you put this many layers of shingles on top,
20:36it's very heavy.
20:37Yeah.
20:37And this house wasn't meant
20:39to have a roof that heavy.
20:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:41We'll make it nice and clean and functional.
20:43Safe.
20:44Beautiful.
20:45But honestly,
20:46it doesn't matter
20:47just because what Sonia and her family
20:49will get out of this
20:50is so, so worth it a million times over.
20:53Today's a big day.
21:05Outside, we're removing the last of the worn-out shingles
21:08so we can replace the ancient rotted roof decking.
21:11Inside, we're reframing and stabilizing joists
21:13to correct the sloping floors.
21:15We've also started replacing all the dangerous wiring.
21:19These are all desperately needed repairs
21:20that ensure Sonia and her family
21:22can enjoy their beloved home
21:23for many, many years.
21:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:31Boom, boom, boom.
21:33All right, let me get this down
21:34so I'm covering up the gray a little more.
21:38Boom, boom.
21:43Been out here a while?
21:45Yes.
21:46You've been hogging the gun?
21:47I would love an opportunity.
21:48I swear to God, I will not shoot you.
21:55Well, I guess this is the safest place as any.
21:59Any questions?
22:00Yeah.
22:01Say hello to my little friend.
22:02Yeah.
22:03Oh, my God.
22:04Yeah.
22:06Ah.
22:08I know what you're thinking.
22:10Did I use six nails or five?
22:16Oh, yeah.
22:17Do you feel lucky?
22:19Do you feel lucky?
22:19Do you, punk?
22:21Ah, it felt good.
22:22It felt powerful.
22:24Oh, my God.
22:28You're all gonna die.
22:36Did you guys hear that?
22:37Did I say that out loud?
22:38No, no, you're fine.
22:39Oh, my God.
22:40I feel like you've got a good villain laugh.
22:43Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
22:47This roof was gruesome.
22:49Oh, my God.
22:49It wasn't just a roof.
22:51It was many roofs.
22:52I was asking them, and they said it was five truckloads of material.
22:55Wait, because there were multiple layers of roofing.
22:57It was layers and layers.
22:58Yeah.
22:58Five dump trucks worth of just stuff from that roof.
23:02like it just looks lighter but more secure it's crazy this is like 30 40 year roofing so they
23:09don't have to worry about this when the time comes they they need a new roof they can just go through
23:12me because i know how to do it now you're the pro yeah yeah can i borrow that for like a couple
23:16hours and i'll bring it back to you is that possible this makes me a little nervous but
23:20yes thank you all right as long as you finish this first gotcha
23:32this is this is going to make me sound really stupid what screw do i use torx screw you want
23:40the longer ones oh so this this bit right here yep just be very careful don't scratch the surface
23:52might have a little scratch there you didn't that's just a small one you didn't actually
23:57scratch like a small scratch i think a little bit of white outer
24:00you see you can't even see it oh dude you got a scratch right there where do i have a scratch
24:08you can't see it right look right there there's no scratch over here i don't know john's wasn't real
24:16i actually scratched it i just felt bad he was giving me a hard time i had to lie so i lied am i
24:22proud no would i do it again yes i have options for the edging for the tile i think you tell us
24:31what color would you go with don't let jonathan influence you he's a he's a bully are you using
24:35the spacers did nicolangelo use spacers i don't think you did he probably did actually and remember
24:41if you don't like it it's their fault open your eyes gosh you guys i was like what is the rattling
24:54coming from the other room oh it's the rattler it's like when somebody's like oh let me just get the
24:58key of the front door the super's here everyone oops i'm all thumbs uh i have options for the edging
25:06for the tile the tile we chose is this beautiful handcrafted tile everything's hand glazed handmade
25:14but the edges are ugly because they're more handcrafted more artisanal there are two directions
25:20we can go we could do something that has a bit of that aged bronze look to it so find something like
25:24that or because this looks so artisanal that might actually look really nice to have something brighter
25:30yeah so the trim pieces that he presented to me it was either between
25:35bronze and brass all of our cabinet hardware is going to be the bronze i think i would edge to
25:43match that don't let jonathan influence you he's a he's a bully all right you tell us your opinion
25:47what color would you go with what finish
25:52it was a very tough decision and i really felt like the brothers pitted me against each other
25:57it was very uncomfortable when you go back and watch that again you'll notice how uncomfortable i am
26:01not to influence you yeah i like the idea of the darker bronze for the tiling not that he's trying
26:11to influence you yeah what about you what do you think i think the brass would look good the brass
26:15would look good i think it looks nice tying into the hint is that more convincing than what i said
26:19well did you hear the end of his he's like would look good like i will say this he tried less which
26:25makes me think he might be right you were really you're like you're too invested it's it's weird
26:28actually i think we'll go with the brass there we go how is this a thingy nice doing business hey man
26:34it's my pleasure it just went with what my heart told me to and it was drew jonathan will lose sleep
26:40over this tonight you know because i'll sneak in in the middle of the tile and change it i'll sue you
26:45guys i read that contract my specs all right hey hello so we were able to salvage a few of them
27:03i'm putting in all the the nice regular baseboards this is the gold redwood so this is original yeah
27:10they love their trim so as much as we can salvage is a win for us were the pieces from within the
27:15built-ins here or where did we yeah we were able to salvage it from this wall we had to redo this
27:19drywall so ripped it out during demo but came off pretty good we stuck the nails out of it sanded it
27:26down yeah i mean this will need a little bit of cleanup but at the end of the day there's so much
27:31gorgeous wood in this house we don't want to lose that feel i mean it would actually be sacrilege
27:36to have taken out the craftsman style from this home and just have a new modern design and i know they
27:41wouldn't have liked that no okay let's get it we stay winning yeah we say yeah okay let's get it
27:52i think the uh tile turned out pretty beautiful um look at this obviously the fireplace was in
27:58right horrible shape so we ended up having the company come out and they took a look so the actual
28:02chimney brick was damaged so you had all the embers and everything getting up where the wood was they
28:07discovered that you know you were looking at eventually either a kind of a collapse inside the
28:13chimney or worse just a couple sparks get up into that kind of crawl space up there the whole thing's
28:18gone so i think it was the right decision to switch to electric yep my whole issue with electric though
28:24is a lot of electric fireplaces they're really shallow and they look totally fake right and this has
28:30some depth to it yeah and so it once we get the drift log set in there and everything it'll actually
28:35look real do you want to put the fireplace in yeah i would love to now you don't have to worry about
28:42like a chimney collapse no one wants to go to bed being like oh my chimney doesn't collapse tonight
28:47there we go oh no wow yeah how cool is that that's beautiful so i think we took care of that one
28:54this is insane guys she's going to freak out when you talk about how homes are kind of generational
29:01and you pass it on to your kids and then their kids i think by doing this it'll be around for
29:05another hundred years we're gonna go down for five minutes crew nap oh i'm a spooner oh that's fine
29:11is fine okay no photos on set please i'm on top of the world like whoa who could really kick me down
29:20uh came on top sitting on my throne you can never take my crown all right here we go tiling yeah man
29:28we're tiling together see the pattern be the pattern and this is um snot that is not just put on it yeah
29:35it's really adhesive snot kind of like what my toddler has right now it's on everything the good news is
29:40i'm a drooler and i can always blame it on the kids this no no this is my daughter she's sick
29:46this is going flush against the metal kind of yeah yeah yeah let's get up there nice and huh boom
29:51yeah oh yeah i love the colors man two-tone really nice it makes it feel like i don't know bigger
29:59it's it's not like you have to have a craftsman style home that's 100 years old and you have to
30:03use something that looks old-timey right like it can look stylish and fresh while still holding that
30:07charm like me it really does fit the aesthetic uh of the style of the home perfectly without
30:15making it look too old fuddy-duddy boring i'm gonna put this bad boy in here are you using the spacers
30:23you're not using the spacers get in there i was kind of doing my own way a little freestyle
30:28but this is probably better did michelangelo use spacers i don't think he did he probably did actually
30:34yeah i haven't tiled a whole lot and uh i didn't realize the spacers were such an integral part of
30:41it uh luckily uh drew caught my mistake only an hour into it which is really nice by the way
30:50now that this is coming in i mean look at it oh up against the stones look at that sexy stone
30:57oh i really love that the darker tones here those sort of earth tones it pulls it out of the yeah
31:04that's fantastic oh my god what a glow up the fact that they have so much more cabinet space so much
31:10more counter space and it's a good flow in here plus you have that pass through that pass through
31:14they're going to love that pass through that way you can just talk to people like oh the chicken
31:17cutlets will be done in a couple minutes get off my exactly or just throw the chicken cutlets at them
31:22when you're hungry eat the personality in this kitchen is phenomenal we're going to have that
31:29sloped wood hood it's a sloped wood hood a sloped wood hood say that i did not know it was a sloped
31:34wood hood sloped wood hood sloped wood hood sloped wood hood slope wood hood you did that really well
31:38actually yeah you know you should do when we're all done you should come over and cook sonja something
31:43in this kitchen i'll destroy it like instantly it's just covered in grease and hot sauce yeah that's my
31:49famous hot sauce grease sandwich don't knock it until you tried it it's kind of a bit of a slow
31:54process but it's nice to be able to do this by hand be a part of it because i think that's going to
31:59mean a lot more to sonja absolutely we only have like what 17 more hours yeah this is a lot put in
32:06the work and i never stop put in the work i put in the work put in the work and i never stop put in the
32:13work put in the work put in the work put in the work put in the work and i never stop yeah that's how
32:17you stay on top look at you just playing in the rocks down there playing in the rocks so try if you
32:26can not to cover the gas burner which where's where's the gas burner it's an electric fire oh okay real
32:35funny real funny goof on the guy that doesn't i'm holding when we first spoke about doing something
32:44for sonja did you ever think only a few weeks later you would be in this space completely transformed
32:49no no this is insane guys she's going to freak out all right i'm going to get back to work in the
32:56kitchen you guys are yeah this is like this is happening today guys like we have to like bring sonja
33:02here today oh yeah what what time is she coming or how are we doing this i thought it would be fun
33:07if we went and picked her up and we all drove together road trip
33:21the kitchen's the thing i'm the most excited for her to see to me and to sonja like food is love
33:27cooking is love like knowing how much like they they like to cook it's just like this is the kind
33:33of kitchen that you want to go in you want to spend like two hours in here job well done let's keep
33:39this going i will except i notice one of the doors is too high oh okay you fix that i'm done when are we
33:45leaving together uh we should leave now or we'll leave the minute that's okay give me four and a half
33:53minutes deal you don't need four and a half minutes for a cabinet door 30 seconds come on easy i could
33:57do it in four when you talk about how homes are kind of generational and you pass it on to your kids
34:03and then their kids i think by doing this it'll be around for another hundred years it's just giving
34:08it that extra life is just it's it's incredible i could literally fall asleep right now okay i'll see
34:14you guys we're gonna go down for five minutes crew nap oh i'm a spooner oh is that okay you know whatever
34:21whatever whatever it's fine it's fine okay no photos on set please
34:35you're being very quiet up there oh what's actually going through you're about to wear
34:40through the palms of your hands i was so excited last night gonna sleep all night thinking about
34:46how i was gonna see the house here we go right here okay that is a new roof i saw the roofing of
34:57the house the roof's a big deal like i was very excited for her to see that part of it sonya that
35:02roof i was up there i did not all of those but at least 30. not just the shingles but also the deck of
35:11the roof was in bad shape so we had to replace some of that it was horrible it was it needed a
35:17really good job and this is it yeah you guys did amazing should we do this okay wait all right here we
35:23go okay okay okay and remember if you don't like it it's their fault well sony we met you eight years ago
35:33and i've never met anyone that has a better outlook on life all right hold on that is calmer than you
35:42that always leads with kindness like you do so now you're gonna close your eyes okay you guys are
35:49gonna blindfold each other okay and i'm going to blindfold myself you've changed our lives so much
35:56and there's nothing i wouldn't do for you she opened them don't open it no don't open yet on the
36:01count of three here we go one two three open your eyes gosh you guys
36:20can she open them don't open your eyes yet on the count of three here we go
36:24one two three open your eyes oh my gosh
36:39You guys, sorry, sorry, so sorry, this is great, we couldn't, I think we couldn't make
37:04this, my family and I, and you guys did for us.
37:09For her to have this is like, it's, yeah, it's pretty, pretty amazing, pretty amazing.
37:18She started crying and I was like, okay, if she cries and then like storms away, we got
37:22a problem, but I could just tell knowing her and that these guys had hit a home run.
37:28Come sit on the most comfortable sofa in the world.
37:31This sofa, I fell asleep on it earlier today.
37:34It's so soft.
37:34Drew and I were spooning a little bit.
37:37Wow.
37:37New TV.
37:39You can see the new floors.
37:40What do you think of the floors?
37:41Yes, I love it.
37:42I love it.
37:43The floors are beautiful.
37:44Really, really, really nice.
37:46This is not my house.
37:48This is something new to me.
37:52I'm in a room house, not in my house, you know?
37:55Totally a different house.
37:58It's fantastic.
37:59Boom.
38:02Look at this.
38:03A new dining room table.
38:07Mm-hmm.
38:07You have a whole new space.
38:09Yeah, check out the drawers.
38:11Take a look.
38:11All the stuff's in there now.
38:13Don't get ahead of yourself.
38:14Don't get ahead of yourself.
38:16Take it easy.
38:17But these guys, they kept all the molding and stuff from the house.
38:23Oh, my gosh.
38:24Check out the new fireplace.
38:26Oh, this is great.
38:28Your chimney was caving in.
38:31So all of this has been replaced.
38:32Everything is safe.
38:33This can also kick off heat.
38:35Okay.
38:35But it is all electric.
38:37You guys do some amazing job.
38:40The tile with the printing, it's wonderful.
38:44It's like I picked it.
38:45It's going to be amazing having all this and having my family here.
38:52It sounds like every weekend is a get-together.
38:54So you now have a good functioning space for that.
38:57Yes.
38:57The work that these guys have done will let the house live for another 100 years.
39:01100 years.
39:02And so your boys and their kids and their kids will all have these kind of shared memories.
39:07You can see the vision for entertaining.
39:09Do you want to see where you'll be making the food for these parties?
39:13Come on.
39:13Come on.
39:14Come on.
39:14Come on.
39:14Come on.
39:16Come on.
39:16Sonia and I have bonded over food over the years.
39:20This is the person who taught me how to really make the best Spanish rice.
39:25Best Mexican rice.
39:26The best.
39:27And open up.
39:28Oh, my gosh.
39:32I love it.
39:38I would never imagine my stuff in a kitchen like this.
39:43Everything works now.
39:47I just want to jump and scream.
39:49Yes.
39:49Go.
39:50I like this style and the color.
40:01I love it.
40:02It's like a two-tone thing, you know?
40:04It's like I picked it.
40:05These colors, the tones, everything is very tasteful for this era of home.
40:09I like the different color on the bottom.
40:12Yeah.
40:12That's me.
40:13Yeah.
40:14I like that.
40:15I mean, aside from the beauty of the space, it's more functional for you and it's safer
40:18for you.
40:19So all new electrical, the new roof.
40:21But also, your venting wasn't working properly.
40:24So that means a lot of your cooking gases, everything, the off-gassing was coming in.
40:27This is amazing, though.
40:28I love this connectivity through here.
40:31I love it.
40:31So when you're cooking right there and everyone's right there, you could be like, hey, that's
40:34not how I want you to set the table.
40:35Come on, Julio.
40:36Right?
40:37That's it.
40:37You could just kind of yell at people through there.
40:39Oh, my God.
40:40The biggest transformation, though, in here was building your fridge and a pantry into
40:46that wall right there.
40:48Are you kidding?
40:51Oh.
40:55What?
40:55This is fantastic.
40:59All this pantry space.
41:00Oh, my goodness.
41:03You have so much storage in here.
41:05Can I have a hug?
41:06Oh, my God.
41:07Thank you so much.
41:09I'll never forget that, ever.
41:12I'll never forget walking in there with you.
41:14You're the one who made it happen.
41:15It was, like, one of the best moments of my life because you walk in and instantly you're
41:20struck by how light it is and how the color design is so beautiful.
41:25The counter space is so big and just watching her discover all these little things.
41:30Here, look at this.
41:32Oh, my gosh.
41:33Two levels.
41:34Dishwasher.
41:35Can't stop.
41:36Open doors.
41:36Oh, my God.
41:37The stove.
41:37I love that oven.
41:39Yeah, it was so nice.
41:40It's so great.
41:40She was like, ah, like, if that was, I'll never, I'll never forget that, ever.
41:46It's so gorgeous.
41:48I mean, it's a dream kitchen for me.
41:53Hey, guys.
41:54There's some guests.
41:55Oh.
41:55Oh.
41:56Oh.
41:56Oh, my God.
41:59Yeah.
42:00When Drew brought my family in, I saw their faces.
42:04What do you think?
42:05They were so happy to see the house.
42:11Coolio was like, oh, my gosh.
42:13So what do you think?
42:15So great, huh?
42:18So, does it feel like home?
42:21It does.
42:21It's so beautiful.
42:22It's amazing.
42:22The best.
42:23It's amazing.
42:24We have so many nice memories.
42:26I'm hoping to have grandkids in the future.
42:28And we'll have more pictures.
42:30It's so comfortable here.
42:31This is an eight-person sofa.
42:33And I'm sure we're going to have more memories from my new house.
42:39Oh, my God.
42:40The famous margaritas.
42:41That's part of the day.
42:43Oh, yeah.
42:45I have no more to say, but I'm really grateful to have you in my life.
42:50And, well, my family.
42:53Thank you so much.
42:55We just were so lucky.
42:56We know you.
