00:00welcome to operation healing heroes join me today as we feature retired army lieutenant colonel
00:10Carlos Powell they served for us they sacrificed for us their stories deserve to be told
00:25every military veteran has a story to tell join our host Jay Garstecki as we honor the stories of our
00:37true American heroes one soldier at a time the mission today is operation healing heroes
00:50brought to you by great clips
00:55operation healing heroes traveled to New Paris Ohio to honor a true American hero in Carlos Powell
01:05we also travel to nearby Beaver Creek for a couple of haircuts and to shine the light on a homegrown
01:12American company that does so much to honor our active service members and veterans alike great
01:20relationships there's something about a veteran that is so incredibly powerful and the relationship I
01:28think makes us a stronger brand because you're appreciating people who have made sacrifices that
01:36most of us don't make this is my dad Roger he served in the army he talks a lot about how he was drafted
01:44right out of high school and and really didn't have a choice to know what it was going to be but so
01:51prideful and so working with great clips and connecting that with my family has just really kind of put all
01:57those pieces together we're all grateful to have the opportunity to align ourselves with the veteran
02:04community there's there is tremendous pride especially for the employees of great clips who have family members
02:13who have served when you're a little girl you have a different perspective of life you you wonder why
02:21your dad's gone you wonder why he's not there for you but then when you get older and you understand that he was making a sacrifice not only on his part but also for you know everyone else and you just have to look at the
02:34big picture of everything it's not just about one small family it's about everybody and it affects
02:38everybody and we just have to be as positive as you possibly can my father served in the Korean War he was
02:45a member of the Navy and I think about this a lot if my dad could see me now I we didn't even have our first
02:54great clips when when he passed away and to be influencing and having an impact on so many people I think it would
03:02absolutely blow him away I am so proud of my dad and today he's finally coming in for a haircut and
03:08I'm so excited it's been it's been a while since he's had a haircut so I'm ready to I'm ready to see
03:14him and get him all cleaned up again
03:15good how are you doing oh yeah it's under purple all right let's go cut your hair then it's about time
03:26yeah I know your hair grew out look at that oh well I've been busy 10 years ago was the first that we
03:37began participating and giving free haircuts to veterans on veterans days and and offering this pay
03:44it forward thing so if you know a vet on veterans day you can take a card and give it to a veteran
03:52and thank them great clips as a brand gives back all the time there's another community that I get to
03:58give to and that community is the community of stylus they are sorry they are very important to me this
04:17business is it's not about cutting hair it's about being in a place where I can help others be the best that
04:28they can be great clips has been my family for 20 years because I have lost my way a few times and I
04:37came back and Claire's always made it feel like home here I've met so many women through the years who
04:43have had struggles and have had hard times and it's it is the coolest thing to be part of watching them
04:54change and grow and become independent and take control of their lives and take vacations and have
05:02retirement funds and buy cars the material things don't matter but the lessons that we get to teach
05:09are are pretty monumental and we do that one person at a time so that's the community that I feel like I
05:16personally have the biggest impact on and I wouldn't trade that for anything it's made this whole journey
05:24worth every sleepless night and and every difficult day operation healing heroes is brought to you by
05:34great clips the Yance Valor foundation and by the Al Lynch foundation
05:42operation healing heroes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting the lives of our US military
05:52veterans in addition we also provide financial support and treatment for post-traumatic stress your donation
05:59will help heal our heroes operation healing heroes is in Beaver Creek Ohio to connect with US Army veteran Carlos power
06:14thank you did you sign in online today I did what's your name Jay all right just getting a haircut today I am
06:22hey Carlos you're looking good oh well looking better than I was that's ready to go do some fishing where
06:31absolutely nobody will see our haircuts absolutely Carlos and his family truly know the meaning of the word
06:37sacrifice I'd only been married you know about three and a half years and my daughter was only three when I
06:44left the first time and that was kind of tough it was difficult for her to understand right why dad is
06:52why I was going somewhere for so long yeah right and you know she had birthday parties and all sorts
07:00of things like that while I was gone and my daddy went through a lot in his military career he would
07:06deploy every two years for an entire year he would be gone for you know every other birthday of mine he
07:12would be gone for you know family events different things but we would always send him videos of
07:19everything that we would do and I remember being younger and saying hi daddy I miss you and you know
07:27everyone concentrates on the deployed soldier because they're exposed to you know dangerous sometimes
07:37violent environments but it's really the families that go through the same hardships that
07:49you do one of the things that that my wife appreciated is when I retired she got a certificate as well you
07:58know for supporting me and you know that jobs just as hard deployments have broken up a lot of marriages
08:08and really hurt a lot of families and the fact that we're still a family is it's her and my daughter that did that
08:17not not me operation healing heroes is brought to you by great clips power pole and by st. croix rods
08:31I don't want to pat myself on the back but I need a little theme music in the background of some type
08:40yeah that's that is right there oh I just pushed it down I got a little barbecue sauce dripping off the edge there
08:46a little cheese yeah melting down yeah yeah you're you're hired if you'd like to see more behind the scenes footage
08:52follow us on social media and subscribe to our YouTube channel if you're a US military veteran
08:58in Illinois Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota or beautiful sunny Florida log on to our website
09:05take a vet fishing.org to find an event near you
09:08like countless veterans Carlos continues to suffer from the invisible wounds of war
09:19I've been shot at and had artillery come in and mortar rounds and luckily I never got wounded
09:27but um did that give you a different perspective on life though and stuff like that I mean
09:32it makes you appreciate it a great deal more than you'd think I can imagine you know you you tend to
09:38stop taking things for granted at that point yeah it was very hard for even my father to go through
09:48because it was very very hard on him seeing and doing all the things that he did and being in the
09:54middle of the things that he was we were terrified every day there were so many times when you know
09:59bombs would be going off in the background on the phone and just all kinds of different things and
10:05just sounds and my poor mom was terrified wreck all the time but being deployed it takes a toll on the
10:13family but it takes a toll on the soldiers too you know a lot of guys go on one single deployment and have a tough one you know and they get home and they've got a lot of stuff to work on I think in my situation you know it was a cumulative effect on the
10:20six deployments
10:45you see a lot of stuff you're in a lot of tense horrible situations and a lot of dangerous situations where you end up you know wearing your body out doing things that affect you physically
11:14for the rest of your life but I think the deeper problems a lot of times are you know mental emotional
11:21you don't have the tools really to process it and find the right ways to deal with it
11:43for me you know I got I got some physical injuries nothing in combat necessarily but in some bad situations that have made you know life kind of painful to live every day but you get through it the emotional part the mental part is a lot harder
12:09and when you're talking with friends and the sun's out birds are singing it's pretty easy to cope with them
12:16birds are singing it's pretty easy to cope with them
12:23but at night
12:29when you're alone with your own thoughts
12:35the demons come out and uh you can't just put them away so that part takes a lot of work not just on your part but you know when you come back that affects your family a lot too
12:42because you're not you're not you're not the same person that left and so they have to get used to a new you
12:49and you don't react the same to a lot of situations that would have been or uh you're not the same person that left and so they have to get used to a new you and you don't react the same to a lot of situations that would have been able to experience it
12:56but you know when you come back that affects your family a lot too because
13:01you're not you're not the same person that left and so they have to get used
13:10to a new you and you don't react the same to a lot of situations that would
13:18be considered normal everyday stuff for anyone else you know I I don't I don't
13:27go into crowded places don't like them can't go to fireworks shows tried to go
13:36to a concert that didn't work out don't even like going to movies really so
13:48we work on it we internalize a lot of it and you just make it one day at a time
14:02and get help where you can
14:12Ohio Veterans Outdoors provides outdoor experiences and education to
14:18combat wounded ill and injured veterans of the u.s. armed forces if you'd like to
14:28personally think a veteran that you've seen in one of our episodes or nominate a
14:31veteran to be featured in a future episode log on to our website
14:35operationhealingheroes.org operation healing heroes is brought to you by recon
14:43boats thorn brothers and by fvp
14:52I'd like to just say thank you to great clips for their continued support of our
14:57u.s. military veterans and operation healing heroes without you we wouldn't be
15:02where we are today there are so many things that set great clips apart from our
15:07our competition probably the the biggest thing is our culture and that's all
15:12driven by a young lady by the name of Rhoda Olson who is near and dear to not
15:17just my heart but to the hearts of so many people that she's touched she brings to
15:24this brand this this multi-billion dollar brand she brings this element of love I
15:31mean that's who Rhoda is and Rhoda's taught most of us that to win in all of
15:36this you have to have love our competitors are not good at that game but we're
15:43different because because we understand what it means to love what we do and to
15:49love the people we do it to and for this is my grandpa Leo Kelly senior he is was in
15:56the Air Force in 1950 my dad was in the army and then my brother was in the
16:00Marine Corps so it's really awesome to work for a place that gives back and you
16:05can kind of connect that with your family everyone has different experiences
16:13exposed to different traumas and no one's the same no one has the same
16:20experiences that caused the PTSD and no one has the same reaction to those
16:26experiences and the absolute hardest thing for a person to do is to admit that
16:38they're having an issue you know it's not their fault yep but you got an issue and
16:43and and you got to admit it and the hardest of all is you you got to talk
16:50about it and if you need help have the courage to ask for it you know it's not a
16:59sign of weakness because if you help yourself then you're helping your family
17:03you know everyone everyone has got a different experience and just because
17:08yours wasn't the most traumatic it doesn't mean it wasn't traumatic right
17:14there's no one-size-fits-all as it relates to trauma and there's no one
17:18size fits all healing trauma didn't happen and you know overnight and it
17:22certainly can't be healed overnight either but right we we definitely would
17:26love to be able to to see if we could help you in in such a way that if I can
17:32make tomorrow better than today for you even in a littlest bit then you might be
17:37able to take that and pay it forward to somebody else I'd I'd welcome it you
17:42know even now I know my family suffers from some of the idiosyncrasies I've
17:48developed you know I mean I I am NOT the same person I was when I started you
17:55know is pretty carefree and happy-go-lucky and and you know there's a lot of
18:00parts of myself that you just close off yeah yeah it's too painful to share I
18:07can't say thank you enough for your service it's it's been a complete
18:12pleasure last couple I've had a great time yeah honestly I really have I've
18:17talked about stuff with you that I really haven't talked about other than
18:23with some really close service buddies well let me just be the first to say thank
18:29you and and that's an honor to me to hear that because it takes a lot of
18:33courage to do what you did and and to to talk about your story and to open
18:38yourself up not only to your experience in the military but your daughter your
18:42grandchild your family your wife and to to you know expose all that and to be
18:48able to talk about it we we certainly appreciate it and I just want to say
18:53thank you it's been a lot of fun I hope you had a good time doing it I'm glad I met
18:56Aaron already clips it's been what an energetic kid that she is just she
19:02lights up a room that's been a wild ride and it's been a lot of fun and I'm glad
19:06that great clips brought us together but we certainly appreciate your time and
19:11service if you don't mind I'd like to give you a couple things here as a little
19:16gift to say thank you for your sacrifice that you made for our country and your
19:21family also I've got a custom-made st. Croix rod here for you it's got our
19:27operation healing heroes logo on it along with all the branches of service logo and
19:31here on the end it says custom built for Carlos Powell an appreciation for your
19:36sacrifice and service and I can't say thank you enough for sharing your story
19:40with us and being open I got to tell you that that is a perfect gift that I and no
19:48fisherman is complete without looking professional and you did a hell of a job
19:53catching fish yesterday so you earned this this is a nice jersey with your name
19:58on it Carlos Powell operation healing heroes and Paul on the back so now you're
20:03gonna look like a real fisherman when you actually go out there and use that look at
20:07that all right man that's phenomenal thank you so I'll wear it with pride I hope you
20:12do thank you again thank you everything we appreciate you and I can't wait to
20:17to hopefully help make tomorrow better than today for you I appreciate it more
