Boy saved by heroic friends in Sydney shark attack

A 12-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital with suspected shark bite injuries after his mates pulled him from the water near Vaucluse at around 4.20pm on Sunday January 18, 2026.

00:00At 4.21 we received our first triple O call and the police boat behind me

00:05responded with two police officers on board to an incident reporting a young

00:09boy being taken by a shark. Police turned up on the scene and one

00:13alighted that police vessel. He had a double tourniquet system, the first aid

00:18kit, and he saw the boy bleeding from the lower limbs and applied two

00:23tourniquets, not one, two different limbs to stem the bleeding. That young

00:28boy on the rock shelf was unconscious at the time. He had been bitten by a large

00:32shark and what I can say the actions of his mates who have gone into the water

00:37to pull him out have been nothing but brave. A gallant recovery from his

00:44mates there on the rock platform at Vaucluse Point.
