00:00Marine police were called to Sydney's eastern suburbs in the harbour at 4.21 yesterday afternoon
00:08to report that a 12 year old boy had been bitten by a shark. The police have detailed the amazing
00:14rescue story. This boy was jumping off a rock accessible from the Hermitage Trail. It's a rock
00:20often called jump rock and he was with a bunch of his friends when they noticed that he'd been
00:25bitten. They managed to pull him out of the water onto a lower rock and call police. Now police were
00:32not far away. They were able to come across the harbour. They dragged the boy into this boat behind
00:38me. He was unconscious and he was bleeding and police applied two tourniquets, one to each leg
00:44because of the serious injuries. They were able to start CPR and race him across the harbour to Rose
00:51Bay where he was handed to paramedics. Paramedics worked on this 12 year old boy before taking
00:58him to the Children's Hospital in Randwick. They say he was given a fighting chance because
01:03of the proximity of the police, their incredible efforts and the incredible efforts of his young
01:09friends. What we can confirm is one boy definitely entered the water to pull his mate out and the
01:15other boys assisted them up from the water onto the rock platform and that was just before
01:20police occurred. So those actions of those young men are brave under those circumstances and very
01:27confronting injuries for those boys to see but I suppose that's mateship. Now police are warning
01:33people not to go into Sydney Harbour at the moment particularly after rain. It's a mix of fresh water and
01:40of salt water and they say there was a perfect combination of that boy jumping into that water,
01:46messing it up and potentially attracting a shark. At the moment we've experienced a lot of fresh water
01:52entering the harbour. You can't see the bottom of it, it's brackish water so I would recommend
01:57it not swimming in the harbour or our other river systems across New South Wales at this time. We do
02:04have surf warnings out there as well so it's not a good time to swim. Police are yet to identify the
02:10type of shark. They believe it was a bull shark and a very large one but they are working with the state
02:15government to track down the exact animal.
