00:08The latest Eurostat figures show that migrant repatriations are on the rise across the bloc.
00:14In the third quarter of 2025, EU member states expelled nearly 42,000 non-EU citizens.
00:21That's an increase of almost 20% compared to the same period in 2024.
00:26The vast majority left the European Union, while 18% of these returns were to other EU countries.
00:34Germany appears to take a more assertive approach than others.
00:37Over the course of a year, it tripled the number of expulsions to nearly 12,000, moving ahead of France.
00:44Belgium seems to be taking a similar direction, with repatriations growing by 66% from the third quarter of 2024 to the third quarter of 2025.
00:53However, there's a significant gap between the number of repatriation orders issued by member states and those which are ultimately carried out, about 36% of the total.
01:05France, for example, issued the most orders, nearly 34,000, however, it effectively carried out just 14% of them, a rate similar to Greece and Spain.
01:15This gap can be explained by several factors.
01:18In some cases, authorities are unable to establish a migrant's country of origin.
01:23In others, returns may be delayed or suspended due to health issues or because the individual is an unaccompanied minor.
