00:00Amid the Ceuta crisis, what is the EU attitude towards refugees?
00:08Immigration is a hot topic in the EU.
00:11The issue of refugees in particular has become even more pressing
00:15following the surge of migrants into the Spanish territory of Ceuta.
00:19But how do citizens feel across the bloc?
00:21In general, support for refugees is strongest in Sweden, the Netherlands and Spain,
00:26with almost 8 in 10 people agreeing that individuals should be able to seek refuge
00:31to escape from war or persecution.
00:34In contrast, those in Hungary and Poland tend to show the least support among EU countries at 54% each.
00:41This is according to a global Ipsos survey published with the UN Refugee Agency,
00:45which pulled respondents from 29 countries, including 10 EU countries.
00:50Some countries' positions shifted over time.
00:53Support in France has climbed to 68% from 43% in 2019.
00:59More than 6 in 10 respondents in Germany and Ireland believe that most refugees
01:03just want to go there for economic reasons or to take advantage of the country's welfare services,
01:09while Sweden and Italy agree the least with that idea.
01:123 in 10 German respondents believe the governments of other wealthier nations
01:16should contribute more to assist refugees globally.
01:19Meanwhile, the rest of the countries consider that international organizations,
01:23such as the United Nations and the World Bank,
01:26should be the ones contributing more to assist refugees globally.
