00:00At least 11 people have been shot by federal immigration agents since September.
00:04And all of them were in their vehicles.
00:06So in each case, the Trump administration has said the agents involved have been acting
00:09in self-defense and feared for their lives.
00:12But the videos that have emerged after the cases haven't always backed that up.
00:15In Minneapolis, Renee Nicole Goode was seen turning away from the agents when she was
00:19shot several times.
00:22The reality is many of these shootings really are preventable.
00:24The best way to prevent these shootings would be for the Trump administration to remove
00:27federal agents from the streets of cities.
00:30However, here are three other options.
00:32So in most cities, most law enforcement is required at this point to wear body cameras.
00:37And there are often policies about when those cameras must be turned on and when that footage
00:41will be released to the public.
00:43The cameras not only hold bad actors accountable, some studies have shown that they've been shown
00:47to reduce violence.
00:48ICE, by contrast, only started issuing body cams to his agents in 2024.
00:54And it remains uncertain how many agents actually wear them and when they actually turn them
00:57on.
00:58The widespread use of masks has actually made it harder for the public to file complaints
01:02against individual agents and hold them accountable.
01:05In some cases, masks have even seemed to encourage excessive force.
01:08So the Department of Homeland Security oversees both Border Patrol and ICE.
01:12And they have a policy that basically prohibits firing at moving vehicles unless it's to
01:17save lives.
01:18However, some law enforcement experts say that the policy should be a little bit more strict
01:22and explicit and telling agents to move out of the way of moving vehicles so they don't
01:27have to use deadly force in the first place.
01:29So the threat to federal immigration agents can actually be real though.
01:32Jonathan Ross, the agent who shot good in Minneapolis, was dragged by a vehicle that
01:37he tried to stop in a previous incident.
01:38He apparently sustained some serious injuries as a result.
01:41But the people in power seem to have already made up their mind about the case out of Minneapolis.
01:46Department of Homeland Security Secretary Christine Noem has called what happened an act of domestic
01:51terrorism and said that the officer fired in self-defense.
01:54That's not the way to build public trust or ensure public safety.
