00:00This is a remarkable thing for a Republican sheriff here in Florida, of all places, to say.
00:05Those people who are adding to the American dream and enjoying the American dream that came here illegally, I might
00:15add, but they're doing good, we need to find a path for them.
00:19And it's proof that the Republicans' red wall on immigration is starting to crack.
00:25The man talking, Grady Judd, is a diehard conservative and one of the architects of Governor Ron DeSantis' immigration agenda.
00:34He's supported DeSantis' crackdown on sanctuary cities and building the so-called Alligator Alcatraz.
00:41So his comments are a pretty hard pivot.
00:44And he's not the only member of Florida's law enforcement community to do it.
00:48This week, a panel of Republican sheriffs and chiefs of police agreed to tell President Trump to stop arresting undocumented
00:56immigrants who aren't breaking other laws.
00:59The irony is, this is what Democrats have wanted for years.
01:03And it's what the Republican-controlled Congress has so far ignored.
01:08Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, also a Miami Republican, has even directly proposed it with the Dignity Act.
01:15But that bill hasn't gotten a hearing.
01:17The public is not happy with the way Trump is cracking down on immigration.
01:21Polls show that 65% of Americans now believe that Trump's immigration policies have made them less safe.
01:29So why are Florida Republican sheriffs only doing this now?
01:32They're providing cover.
01:34It's clear that the GOP needs Trump to pivot on immigration if the party's going to resurrect its hopes to
01:40win in the midterm elections.
01:42The White House has already leaked that it was telling Republicans to stop emphasizing mass deportation and focus more on
01:51removing violent criminals.
01:53The question now is, will Trump follow the advice of these Florida sheriffs and other Republicans?
01:58Because not everybody in the GOP will be on board.
02:02But it's a reasonable way out of the president's self-imposed mess on immigration.
02:09And he should take it.
