GRAY WHALE MUM AND CALF SPOTTED ON EPIC MIGRATION
WITH PIX AND VID
By Shuk Yee Tsang
Drone footage has captured a rare and tender moment as a gray whale mother swims alongside her newborn calf during their annual migration.
The footage was filmed near Newport Beach by Newport Landing Whale Watching group, as the gray whale migration season officially got underway in the coast of California, USA.
Jessica Rodriguez from Newport Landing Whale Watching shares each year, gray whales travel thousands of miles from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warmer calving lagoons of Baja Mexico.
This period marks the time when many females give birth while still on the journey south.
Newborn gray whale calves are typically 12 to 15 feet long at birth and weigh around 2,400 pounds, gaining as much as 30 pounds a day during their first year as they remain close to their mothers.
The footage offers a striking aerial view of the bond between mother and calf, highlighting one of the ocean’s most remarkable natural journeys.
Jessica Rodriguez said: “Our gray whale migration has finally started in Newport Beach.
"This drone video shows a gray whale mom and her newborn calf as they make their way along our coast.
"This is the time of year when mothers give birth on the migration route as they head toward the warm, protected calving lagoons in Baja Mexico.”
