Watch as a family drive through Custer State Park comes to a halt when a massive herd of bison decides to take over the road.

The footage was filmed by Nicole Heintzelman along the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, South Dakota, USA.

The video, captured from inside a vehicle, shows dozens of bison including several calves, slowly crossing and walking along the roadside.

One enormous bull ambles directly past the car, giving motorists a close-up view of the iconic animals as they casually block the route.

With nowhere to go, drivers are forced to sit patiently as the herd continues its leisurely march, creating a classic bison traffic jam.

The memorable encounter was shared online and Nicole said: "My husband drove us through Wildlife Loop in CSP and we got stuck in a bison traffic jam."
