Conor Gallagher quitte l’Atlético de Madrid pour faire son retour en Premier League, direction Tottenham. Arrivé en Espagne à l’été 2024 après s’être imposé à Chelsea, le milieu anglais avait tenté un vrai changement de trajectoire en rejoignant la Liga et un contexte tactique très exigeant.
Sa première saison madrilène est correcte sur le plan statistique, avec de nombreuses apparitions et une implication constante. Mais au fil des mois, son rôle évolue. La concurrence au milieu de terrain et les choix de Diego Simeone le poussent progressivement vers un statut de rotation, avec de moins en moins de titularisations en championnat lors de la saison 2025-2026.
Malgré un discours toujours positif et une adaptation reconnue à la vie madrilène, Gallagher peine à s’installer durablement. Son profil, basé sur l’intensité, le pressing et le volume de course, correspond davantage au rythme du football anglais qu’aux exigences positionnelles de l’Atlético.
À 25 ans, le retour en Angleterre apparaît donc comme une décision stratégique. Tottenham débourse environ 40 millions d’euros pour le relancer, lui offrir du temps de jeu et une meilleure visibilité auprès du sélectionneur Thomas Tuchel, à l’approche de la Coupe du monde 2026.
Côté Atlético, l’opération est maîtrisée. Le club récupère le montant investi à l’achat, allège son effectif et referme un dossier sans perte financière, malgré le sentiment qu’un meilleur usage du joueur aurait été possible.
