Gary O’Neil est le nouvel entraîneur du RC Strasbourg. Né le 18 mai 1983 à Beckenham, l’Anglais arrive en Alsace à 42 ans avec un parcours entièrement construit dans le football britannique, d’abord comme joueur, puis comme technicien. Milieu offensif de formation, il a disputé plus de 500 matchs professionnels entre la Premier League et le Championship, sous les couleurs de Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham, QPR, Norwich, Bristol City ou Bolton.  Après sa retraite sportive en 2019, Gary O’Neil se tourne rapidement vers le coaching. Il débute en 2020 au sein des structures de Liverpool, avant de rejoindre Bournemouth comme adjoint. En août 2022, il est propulsé entraîneur principal dans un contexte critique. Malgré une lourde défaite inaugurale face à Liverpool, il parvient à redresser l’équipe et à assurer le maintien en Premier League, terminant 15e.  À l’été 2023, il rejoint Wolverhampton. Là encore, le défi est important, avec un effectif affaibli par de nombreuses ventes. O’Neil mène les Wolves à la 14e place et jusqu’en quart de finale de FA Cup. Sa deuxième saison est plus difficile, marquée par une série de défaites et des fragilités défensives, entraînant son licenciement en décembre 2024.  Reconnu pour son approche moderne, son exigence et son travail tactique, Gary O’Neil privilégie un système en 3-4-2-1, un contre-pressing intense et des transitions rapides. 00:04Born on May 18, 1983 in Beckenham, he would go on to have a great playing career.

00:09almost exclusively in England and exclusively in the United Kingdom.

00:12He will be a good attacking midfielder, reliable, hardworking, intelligent in the game.

00:16And while he will be an international at the English youth level, he will never be called up to the senior national team.

00:20That said, he will still forge a reputation as a dedicated player

00:23and someone who doesn't cause any problems in a locker room.

00:25After hanging up his boots in 2019, Gary will very quickly find a new career path.

00:30From 2020, he joined the youth staff at Liverpool before becoming an assistant at Bournemouth.

00:34And that's where his career would take a turn.

00:36In the summer of 2022, Bournemouth suffered a historic 9-0 defeat against Liverpool.

00:40Scott Parker will leave the club and therefore O'Neill will take over the club.

00:44Against all odds, he will stabilize the group; he will succeed in stopping the losing streak.

00:48and they secured their place in the first league by finishing 15th.

00:51That said, the board of the English club does not trust him and will therefore dismiss him at the end of the season.

00:55He would quickly bounce back at Wolverhampton the following year.

00:57Despite a difficult situation, they finished 14th in the first league and reached the quarter-finals of the cup.

01:02And his tactical work, whether in quick transitions or counter-pressing,

01:06It will be quite well received by observers of English football.

01:08The second season, however, is a disaster.

01:10In 16 matches, he will lose 11 matches and will be fired in December 2024.

01:14And so, to describe Gary O'Neill's tactics a little bit,

01:17He is a modern, demanding, and methodical coach.

01:20His preferred system is a 3-4-2-1.

01:23And for a 3-defender system, he will play with a defensive line that is rather high.

01:27He demands intense pressing from his players, especially when they lose possession.

01:30The aim, of course, after regaining possession of the ball, is to launch a very quick counter-attack.

01:35And so, on January 7, 2026, at the age of 42, Gary O'Neill arrives in Alsace.

01:39where he was appointed coach of Racing Club de Strasbourg,

01:41after Liam Rosseignor's departure to Chelsea.
