00:00The Supreme Court has ruled against a Colorado ban on conversion therapy.
00:04The 8-to-1 decision determined that a 2019 law restricting licensed mental health professionals
00:08from providing therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity in minors
00:14violated First Amendment protections. It was a big win for the Christian therapist who brought
00:18the suit. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the decision, quote, the First Amendment stands as
00:24a shield against any effort to enforce orthodoxy in thought or speech in this country. It reflects
00:29instead a judgment that every American possesses an inalienable right to think and speak freely
00:35and a faith in the free marketplace of ideas as the best means for discovering truth.
00:40Supporters of the law pointed to medical groups like the American Medical Association who have
00:44discredited the practice of conversion therapy. But during oral arguments, Gorsuch countered that
00:49scientific understandings change over time. The one dissenting justice, Katanji Brown Jackson,
00:53took the rare opportunity to read her objection from the bench and said in part, quote,
00:57With respect to professional medical speech, health care providers do not have autonomy.
01:01When it comes to providing treatments for their patients, they are bound by the standard of care
01:05and are not generally free to choose the content of their message. Today, the court will hear oral
01:10arguments on one of the president's key initiatives, overturning birthright citizenship.
