Leader of the TPP Farley Augustine does not believe that the radar in Tobago is a factor in today's Poll.
Transcript
00:00We spoke with the leader of the TPP after he cast his ballot at the polling station in Speyside
00:05and we sought his perspective about what would have weighed on the minds of voters
00:10in this particular Tobago House of Assembly elections.
00:14Do you think the radar, the U.S. radar, the radar installed by the U.S. military in Tobago in any way
00:20was a key feature in this election and could have weighed on the minds of voters today?
00:24I think one political party tried to make it a key feature.
00:30I don't think it is.
00:33I don't think it is what Tobago News will be voting on.
00:38Based on my interaction with Tobago News,
00:41the expectations are, among many others, employment, youth unemployment or underemployment.
00:49The requirement or the need to have constant communication
00:56and a sort of intimate relationship with area representatives
00:58and what it means to be an area representative
01:01versus being a secretary or a member of the executive.
01:06People had concerns about some environmental issues,
01:10but I don't think that featured as much as my political opponents wish it would have featured.
01:19Certainly, it was a matter of concern,
01:22but I am grateful that the Tobago News have trusted my judgment on the issue to this point.
01:28The last five or so years, the politics in Tobago has evolved into being a lot more testy than before,
01:37a lot more ferocious in terms of how we politic all around.
01:42And many things could probably account for that.
01:45But certainly, on our end, we don't endorse violence as a response to political opposition at all.
01:53What is your hope for Tobago when the polls are closed,
02:00what is counted?
02:01What is your hope for Tobago arising out of this election?
02:04Well, the hope for Tobago is that we continue to build out the greater city island and the planet.
02:10It is what we projected in 2021.
02:15We married that with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
02:19and how Tobago could get there,
02:21how as a small island developing state,
02:24we can become competitive,
02:27how our people can be heads and shoulders above regional counterparts
02:33and other small islands in the world.
02:35Of course, as a small island,
02:38we will continue to face impact of global pressure,
02:44including climate change and what that means for our environment
02:48and the costs of responding to that.
02:51Of course, as a small island,
02:52we have little to no see in terms of global affairs
02:57and, of course, imaginations of larger metropolitan powers.
03:04And it's beyond, but it has to be beyond survival for us in Tobago.
03:08It has to be how do we purposefully chart a course
03:12that leads to us becoming the greatest little island on the planet.
03:16The beautiful scenery of Tobago,
03:18always the backdrop of the Tobago House of Assembly elections
03:21as voters in Tobago determine
03:23who will be in charge of the Tobago House of Assembly
03:26for its next term.
03:28Reporting from Speyside, Tobago, Drew Brown, TB6 News.
