A tall ship that's hosted a youth development program for 38 years has docked in Hobart for the last time. The 38-year-old Young Endeavour vessel is set to be replaced with a newer boat, with more room to welcome the next generation of young sailors.

00:00Sailing into Hobart for the last time, this crew won't farewell their ship quietly.
00:15The 24 young people are back on dry land after a 10-day voyage.
00:21For almost 40 years, a youth development program has run aboard the Young Endeavour,
00:26encouraging 16 to 23-year-olds to build confidence and life skills alongside sailing expertise.
00:33Friends for life because they've forged that friendship through a shared experience
00:36and they've done things they never thought they could.
00:38So each person changes in a different way but the common denominator is they all change.
00:43It's a really close connection and everyone now is really confident
00:46and they're all really happy about the experience they had.
00:49The 38-year-old vessel is set to be replaced with a new training ship which is currently being built.
00:55For us to keep the program going, what we required was a slightly bigger vessel and of course a newer one.
01:01As with all ships, they age.
01:03The future of this ship is yet to be decided.
01:05For now, it'll keep sailing until a bigger, more environmentally sustainable replacement is ready later this year.
01:11The people who run the program say, while the ship will be different,
01:14their commitment to changing young lives will stay the same.
01:17We will manage a transition so that we keep delivering the program to young Australians
01:22and then when that new ship's online, it's just to scale up on what we're doing.
