00:00Main, here at A1, drop the gate.
00:05Kitchen, good start.
00:07He's tucked on the inside.
00:09Right at DeFrancisco and Chance Hymus.
00:12A handlebar, a handlebar.
00:14Perfect opportunity for these guys right here.
00:18Talked about the starts.
00:19Hayden Dings back.
00:20Oh, no.
00:21Kitchen.
00:22Kitchen down in the first corner.
00:25That's going to be tough.
00:26I was watching him.
00:27He actually had a good.
00:28He just lost the front end on that off-camera the way it was.
00:31He lost it.
00:32And that is not the way you want to start for Levi Kitchen, for sure.
00:35Well, we talked about it with Ryder DeFrancisco, how he is filled out.
00:39He is a full-grown man right now.
00:42And could this be his breakout year?
00:45This was a very successful amateur racer, very young age,
00:49went through some ups and downs, and now he is here making it happen.
00:54I love to see it.
00:55Great start.
00:56Great opening lap.
00:57McAdoo and Hymas, they're fighting over second at the moment.
01:00I think the biggest goal for Ryder DeFrancisco right now is just maintain calm.
01:06Do not get caught in the hype.
01:08Don't get overly excited.
01:11Control those emotions right now.
01:13And where is Hayden Deegan?
01:14He is buried back in the pack.
01:16Last time I saw it, he was 14.
01:18This is very reminiscent of a year ago when he went down on the opening lap and was last
01:24and worked his way all the way back to fifth.
01:27So keep your eyes on Deegan.
01:28He's up to 12.
01:29There's Max Anstey, his teammate.
01:31Closing in on Cameron McAdoo.
01:33Inside of McAdoo.
01:35McAdoo made a mistake in that rhythm section, allowed Chance to get by and also allowed his
01:40teammate, Hayden Deegan's teammates, Max Anstey, to get around.
01:43So critical mistake.
01:44You can see how aggressive these guys are trying to be in the beginning.
01:47As you can see, Ryder Dears has two and a half seconds out.
01:50Heads up riding for McAdoo too.
01:52Not to close the door too much on that triple.
01:54Can't anticipate it.
01:55Max Anstey being there.
01:57Anstey has a good run going through that rhythm section right now.
02:01Anstey was really fast all year long in the woods.
02:03So early on in the Eastern Division last year, he had a huge advantage there.
02:08There's Deegan up to 11, starting to close in on Ross and Varese.
02:15Goes around the outside, gets a twofer in the one deal.
02:18Oh, that was good.
02:19He squeezed his way in there.
02:22It's like Ross was worried about trying to catch the other guy, RC.
02:25Yeah, that was a huge pass to get by those guys.
02:28And why do I say that?
02:29Because now, look, he has a little bit of a gap right here where he can gain some time
02:33and make up some time to the front runners.
02:36Had he gotten hung up behind those two guys, it would have really slowed down his progression.
02:42Yeah, I mean, he would have been stuck behind him all the way through here.
02:44And you can see these guys are losing a lot of time.
02:47I mean, losing traction coming out of his corner.
02:48So you can only be so aggressive.
02:51Now Hayden keep pushing forward.
02:52He's got last year as a template if you want to work from.
02:56He didn't win until the third race last year, which was A2.
02:59Here at A1, as I mentioned earlier, he was last and worked his way up to fifth.
03:03So he knows that if he doesn't win A1, which was one of the big bucket list items,
03:08it's not going to deter him from going on and defending his title.
03:12Here's Levi Kitchen working his way back through the field.
03:15And here's what happened.
03:16Oh, he gets the front end a little bit high right there.
03:18And everything just kind of narrows up.
03:20But like James said, he started to lose the front end.
03:24You can see it's kind of an off-cambered uphill.
03:26And that dirt is very loose, very gravelly as well.
03:30Not a lot of grip there.
03:31And down he goes.
03:33Yeah, we talked about Hayden Deegan having to be patient.
03:36Levi's got to do the same thing.
03:37And I know it's hard for him as he almost goes off the racetrack.
03:40He's been so fast, looks so good all day long.
03:44One mistake in that first corner.
03:45He's got some yellow flags out.
03:47And that's the thing, like, you know, there's just so much talking coming in to the series.
03:53Who's going to win?
03:54Who's going to do what?
03:55But then it's silly things like that happening or, you know, unfortunate circumstances.
04:01Oh, what a pass by Max Ansi.
04:03Comes through that sand section.
04:04Firing.
04:05Oh!
04:06Yeah, actually, Max made the pass prior to that.
04:10But I don't think Chance liked the way he kind of shed him down.
04:13Chance had a good run through that sand.
04:15Max understood that.
04:16He closed that door.
04:17I believe that's why Chance ran it in so hard.
04:20None of the riders in this field have ever won A1.
04:25So we're going to get a fresh winner again because now Joe Shimoda to defend his win of a year ago.
04:30That's a good run for Cameron McAdoo.
04:32We know he's capable of these kind of rides.
04:33But the reason that I say that, I mean, he took a lot of time off last year.
04:38Oh, yeah.
04:38A lot.
04:39And to see him up here battling, that's great.
04:44Yeah, really good.
04:45I mean, he's always had the speed.
04:47When he got back on the bike, he was really fast.
04:49I mean, both these guys have been injured.
04:51That was really close.
04:52Yeah.
04:53And he got Michael Moseman in that fifth spot.
04:55Just came off the track a little bit ago.
04:57So he's probably feeling pretty comfortable.
05:00But how long would you expect, given, you know, practice track is one thing, racing is another.
05:05All of the riders say that themselves.
05:08How long would you expect for McAdoo to get back into race rhythm and, you know, kind of for it to come back to him?
05:14He's had a great heat.
05:15He's riding beautifully now.
05:16But for it to feel normal, to after he had such an exaggerated period away.
05:21I just feel, well, because he's been in the game for quite some time and he's been in these situations before, Lee.
05:28I figure it wouldn't take him very long, especially when you've got the heat race to kind of get into the back race mentality.
05:34Right.
05:34Right.
05:34DeFrancisco has company.
05:36Here comes Max Anstey.
05:37Cuts down low.
05:38Yeah, speaking of being comfortable and finding that race rhythm, Max Anstey has caught that.
05:44It looks like he's going to try to get up the inside.
05:47Nice smoothies.
05:48That's a rail to outside.
05:50Let's see if he go out.
05:51Yeah.
05:51Cut it down.
05:52He can go anywhere he wants.
05:53Look how he's cutting down early like James was just talking about.
05:56He's able to go outside if he needs to.
05:58Look, it's going wide here.
05:59He's going to jump up top here, go over, make the move.
06:02No.
06:03Oh, oh, caught that one a little hard.
06:05That allows Ryder D to escape just a little bit.
06:08Max is quicker.
06:09So, like, although he probably wants to get by Ryder fairly quick, he doesn't have to make it so fast and put himself in danger or at risk of going down.
06:19Yeah, what he was trying to do is get that momentum because how he was able to get around a couple of guys already.
06:25If he could get on the inside of those guys, the way that corner pushes off that triple, he would have had the inside line, but made that mistake in that rhythm section, which allows Ryder D to get another gap.
06:35Here we go.
06:36Through the whoops, look at the difference in speed there.
06:37Ryder DeFrancisco has a little look behind from his rock star energy factory Husqvarna.
06:43Yeah, he's got that in his back pocket.
06:46Bottom box is Hayden Deegan continuing to come through the field, and he has caught Max Volland and Hunter Yoda.
06:55And the further that Deegan comes up, the harder it is going to make the pass.
07:01But, dude, Levi Kitchen has closed up all the way to the back of Hayden.
07:05Oh, no, sorry, that's Cameron McAdoo.
07:07They look...
07:08No, I was with you.
07:09I kept looking, but McAdoo must have went down as Max makes that pass.
07:13Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, no.
07:16Heavy crash for Cameron McAdoo.
07:19I saw that coming.
07:20That's what I was, like, reacting the way that I did.
07:24Top box, Max Anstey, guys, has gone to the lead.
07:27And Hymas is now closing in on Ryder D.
07:31Man, that's scary as a rider where Cameron was.
07:33When you know the guy's coming over, there's nothing you can do about it.
07:36I'm not sure what happened with Hayden.
07:38Was he worried about the guy in front?
07:39I was looking at Max make the pass.
07:41And that same position he tried making in the last lap.
07:44This would be absolutely mega for Max Anstey to come out here.
07:50But, again, I go back to how well he was riding last year on that East Coast.
07:55I mean, it's really not a surprise.
07:57It looks very similar to me now how he did then.
08:01Three different teams, three different manufacturers in the top three.
08:05It's Yamaha leading Husqvarna, leading Honda.
08:07We told you earlier in the heat about Chance Hymas moving away from training with the Lawrence Brothers in Florida,
08:15moving back closer to home, working with family, being with family, doing it his own way.
08:20And he said, you know, it's that time for me to step up, kind of almost to grow up and do it my way.
08:25And we'll see if it works.
08:26Well, so far, so good.
08:28We're over the halfway mark.
08:30Quick reminder to stock up on Monster Energy drinks at Stater Brothers.
08:33I mean, James, you've talked about it, like, as far as Hymas goes in the Pro Motocross Championship.
08:38He was really only one of the guys to beat Hayden or run Hayden Deegan straight up other than Joe.
08:44So having the speed isn't the problem.
08:46It's just, you know, staying healthy.
08:48Yeah, and we saw Joe Shimoda say the same thing last year.
08:52Kind of broke off and wanted to do his own thing.
08:54And I think that these guys are searching for, especially maybe with Chance,
08:57is that's that belief in themselves.
08:59Because, like we talked about, he has the speed, he's won races, but it's just believing.
09:04And I think when you start making your own stuff and going your own way,
09:08it puts you in that position, Will.
09:10James, it's one thing saying that you need to be in that position, right?
09:14It's another thing actually feeling it and talking to Chance yesterday.
09:17You can tell the smile's there, the confidence is there.
09:20There's this kind of sense from him that he really believes he belongs,
09:23but he also has a very solid plan for this season.
09:26Build.
09:27The team want him to build.
09:28Don't worry about it, they said.
09:29You don't have to blow everybody's doors off at A1.
09:32But they know what he's capable of.
09:34They want him to build into it.
09:35And most importantly, him and the team want him to finish this season healthy
09:39and get to those playoffs in September.
09:42It's funny you say that, Will, because he kind of had the same approach last year,
09:46if you remember, and really didn't think he was a title contender.
09:49They were kind of eased their way into the championship, and then he went out and won.
09:55Where were we?
09:55Foxborough, wasn't it?
09:57And then he was back in it.
10:00Yeah.
10:00But I think the difference is, as he gets the nice run, but he's going to be on that side.
10:06Let's see if Ryder deep pushes a little wide.
10:10Guys are trying to get on him.
10:11Chance should have the pass right here.
10:13Nice work.
10:14Chance Hymas goes to second on the Honda HRC machine.
10:17No contest for Ryder.
10:19He knew that Chance had the pass made, so he just sets up, lets him go.
10:24That's a smart move.
10:27Yeah, but to finish my point on Chance, what I was saying earlier,
10:29you would think there's a lot of – he put a lot of pressure on himself by making this change.
10:34You know, if it doesn't work out, it's not going to look good,
10:37especially if things start happening, get tired or whatnot.
10:40I believe Chance has a lot going for him.
10:41As Levi Kitchen, we're watching him making his way up.
10:44Yeah, the rivalry that we were looking forward to, maybe for first and second
10:48between Deegan and Kitchen, has not materialized.
10:51It's been the comeback story.
10:53Deegan has made his way up to fifth.
10:54Kitchen, now that move there, was for seventh.
10:57Good comeback for Levi right here, and it's important.
11:01Even though it's the first round of this 250 West division,
11:07every point counts right here, especially as you get down the stretch for the championship.
11:12And this is a great comeback.
11:14The championships are won on your bad days.
11:19And to that point, I want to take the story back to Ryder DeFrancisco.
11:23He said last year, my bad days were really bad days, and I can't have that this year.
11:28I've got to dig myself out of a hole and make the most of it.
11:31Now is the time.
11:33Well, Ryder De is sitting in a podium position with less than three and a half minutes to go.
11:39Yeah, he's got some breathing room, too, James.
11:42He's about a second and a half or so.
11:44If he can maintain that gap or at least try to hang with Hymas, he'll be sitting pretty to be on the box.
11:53Nice pass by Levi.
11:54Oh, yeah.
11:55You know, but that story goes for a lot of these guys.
11:57I mean, look, the good days are great.
12:00The bad days are horrible.
12:02And the guy that really can kind of be more, you know, steady even through this whole thing is going to help that out.
12:08But it's like Deegan closing in on his teammate.
12:11If he can somehow get to the top four, it would be huge for him.
12:14And you never know.
12:15Ryder De is only a few seconds in front of him, and we know what happens when Hayden sees that.
12:19And this is when fitness starts to come into the playlist, and all of these riders are extremely physically fit, well-tuned athletes.
12:27But just a little bit makes a big difference here.
12:30Late in the race, the track is starting to go away, becoming much more difficult.
12:33You see that line right there Hayden took, staying out of the accelerating bumps and the ruts.
12:39And you can make up a lot of time late in the race.
12:43Looking for Michael Moseman, considering that he fell in the heat, had to go to the LCQ, won the LCQ, I think, to come away from A1 with a top five.
12:51That's a good start.
12:52That's a solid start to the championship.
12:54Hey, I'm going to tell you, if Deegan is able to get by Moseman relatively quick, an outside shot of the podium is not out of question.
13:02Three minutes to go, plus the lap.
13:05So, teammate on teammate, he gets by.
13:07Well, if he can turn it loose right here.
13:10Yeah, that was a key pass for him, not to get stalled behind Michael.
13:13That's what I was mentioning.
13:14Rotter D is only a few seconds.
13:16Yeah.
13:16And it's hard for a Rotter to start picking up the pace when you see another guy coming.
13:20And the last person you want to see coming is that number one of Hayden Deegan, because he'll make that time up.
13:25And I believe he'll get through this whoop section as he gets – once he's able to see Rotter D, that gap's going to close really fast.
13:32Yeah.
13:32And one thing, too, like when I was talking about Hayden and how he needed to get starts, and it's not just necessarily to win races,
13:39but it also – when you get good starts, you don't subject yourself to things that could just go wrong by happenstance, by being in mid-pack.
13:49Seems like things go awry back there, and that's what I mean about getting good starts is not only to win,
13:54but, you know, you don't surround yourself with things that could possibly go wrong.
13:58JT, let's talk more about the race leader, Max Anstey.
14:01Well, this is a heck of a start to a season for Max Anstey.
14:04And let's face it, he's the elder statesman of this 250 class.
14:07He's probably got a decade on half the field here.
14:09But that comes with an advantage, I think.
14:12And situationally, I think he's just seen this all before.
14:15And on that first lap, he looks around, he doesn't see Hayden, he doesn't see Kitchin.
14:19Those are two of the biggest rivals for this championship, and I think his way of attacking this race changes it a little bit.
14:26That experience provides him with the knowledge.
14:28He knows when to push.
14:30He knows when he can be patient.
14:31He knows when there's an imminent threat.
14:33And in this race, when you don't see Hayden and you don't see Levi Kitchin anywhere near it,
14:37you can take your time a little bit.
14:38And this was a perfectly executed master class by the number 61.
14:43And JT, do you feel like there's a small element here to where he feels like, you know,
14:48he got robbed last year and there's unfinished business for how well he was doing in that eastern division?
14:55Yeah, I do.
14:56And I think he feels like he can beat anybody in this class.
14:59And he knows better than to go start a war of words with a guy like Hayden Deegan.
15:03But I truly believe deep down, head to head, he has nothing to fear with Hayden on a supercross track.
15:08Well, if Ryder DeFrancisco is going to earn his first career podium, he's going to do it the hard way.
15:14Because here comes Hayden Deegan.
15:17This is eerily reminiscent of last year, of what Hayden did, of working his way back through the field.
15:23However, he's closer to a podium than what he was 12 months ago.
15:27He came from last to fifth a year ago.
15:30Now he's got a shot at a podium.
15:32Third place is right there.
15:33It's like copy and paste, James.
15:35No, it is.
15:36But as Hayden made a couple of mistakes, he's got to be really patient.
15:40Because the hard part on his racetrack, he wants to get on the gas.
15:42He sees him.
15:43But now he's lost that time because of how slippery his racetrack is.
15:46So just back it up.
15:48We've got another lap.
15:49I think Hayden has to speed on him.
15:51But he's got to have some clean laps as he almost goes down right there and loses front end.
15:55Oh, whoa, whoa.
15:57I thought he was going to lose it right there.
15:59It got really far back.
16:00Weight got back on the bike on the whoops.
16:06As a rider, you go back and you watch the film.
16:09You're like, man, I was able to catch him.
16:11And then when I got close to him, I started pushing.
16:13And then it's just going to make you very upset at yourself because you already had the pace
16:17if you would have just kept doing what you were doing.
16:19But it's hard as a rider.
16:20You just want to get him right then.
16:23Got another half a lap.
16:24We've got to get it done.
16:24And go all the way back to 2018.
16:26Shane McElrath won.
16:29And then Cole Nichols won.
16:31Justin Cooper.
16:32Christian Craig.
16:33Jed Lawrence.
16:34RJ Hampshire.
16:35And then last year, Joe Shimoda.
16:37We're going to have another new winner, guys.
16:39Another new winner here at A1 in 250 West competition.
16:43Max Anstey.
16:44The 32-year-old Brit who had off-season races and stayed in good form.
16:49Stayed in good health and feels it coming into the season as he goes through the walks for
16:57the final time.
16:58That green leader light on.
17:00And he has left the field behind by more than seven seconds.
17:05Max Anstey says, keep me in the championship hut.
17:08Anstey wins A1.
17:11The fight for third.
17:13Chance Heimus grabs second.
17:14Well done, right at DeFrancisco gets his first podium.
17:20Deegan for fourth.
17:22But it's Anstey's night.
17:26Well done, Max.
17:28Just an incredible ride.
17:30Again, no surprise for me, James.
17:32No, we talked about it off-air.
17:34We did.
17:35Let's just tell the folks.
17:36Yeah, we did.
17:36This is one of our favorites right here.
17:38Felt like he was going to do it because of his start.
17:40So, great ride by Max.
17:42He said, I miss so much time.
