Transcript
00:00Good afternoon MIA, I hope you're well and staying out of this heat.
00:04I'm irrigated journalist Kai Horroide, here to deliver your rap of what's making headlines across the region this week.
00:10In Leighton this week, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Joe Cohen turned 100 years old,
00:17so we heard all about his adventures over the last century.
00:20Though definitely a milestone, Mr Cohen said to his family at a surprise party that he didn't feel a day over 50.
00:26We also spoke to 2026 Sunrise Ambassador Jemima Heath, who is campaigning for an upgrade to Mountford Park,
00:34with a focus on installing playground equipment targeting preschool-aged kids.
00:38Ms Heath has a huge amount of fundraisers and awareness campaigns going on,
00:42juggling it all along with work and raising her own kids.
00:46In sad news for cat lovers, Griffith has the third highest euthanasia rate for cats at the pound in the state.
00:52The information came to light after a government inquiry found an unacceptable number of animals were being euthanised in local shelters.
01:00Finally, Carithool Shire Councillor Mick Armstrong is leading the call for more reliable power and communication infrastructure across their region.
01:08The push comes after multiple unexplained blackouts in recent years.
01:12Emergency services have also raised concerns about the impact that communication failures can have on emergency operations,
01:19as well as possible public health risks.
