00:00Big cook, little cook, welcome to our cafe. Big cook, little cook, want you to come and play.
00:15Meeting all the friends we cook for, sharing stories, trips and fun. Big cook, little cook, we'll cook for everyone!
00:29Oh, hello! Welcome to our cafe, the best cafe in the world! Ben's in a very good mood today, he can't stop singing.
00:50la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la!
00:54Oops!
00:55Careful!
00:57Whoops!
00:59Never mind!
01:00Nothing broken anyway!
01:05Oh, dear!
01:06Sorry!
01:07I'll get the dustpan...
01:09I don't know what's wrong with you today, Ben…
01:12That's the fourth thing you've smashed all week!
01:16Oh, no!
01:18Sorry!
01:20Now that's the fifth thing you've smashed.
01:23You've turned into a Butterfingers, Ben.
01:26I know. I'll have to go out and buy some new cups and plates.
01:29The trouble is, Ben, we've spent everything in the money box.
01:33We'll have to wait and save if we want to buy new things.
01:36Oh, I'm really sorry. I'll be more careful from now on, I promise.
01:44Ben! Ben!
01:46Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!
01:48Ben, we've got a customer.
01:50Just don't touch anything breakable.
01:52I'm on my way! Woo-hoo!
01:59Who is it, Small? Who's in our cafe today?
02:06Well, it's someone very important.
02:09Ooh!
02:10And he's wearing a crown.
02:12Don't tell me we've got a king in our cafe.
02:15That's exactly who we've got in our cafe.
02:17And I think I've met this king before.
02:21He's in one of my adventures.
02:23I think it's time to look in my book.
02:25We need a story to help us cook.
02:38Let's take a look in Little Cook's book.
02:41Little Cook's adventures in the big world.
02:44Let me see.
02:45One day I went to visit the king in the land of sixpence.
02:51He was sitting down to his pie lunch, as usual.
02:54The pie had been opened, as usual.
02:57The four and twenty blackbirds had popped out, as usual.
03:00But they weren't singing.
03:02I love to hear my blackbirds sing as I eat my pie lunch, moaned the king.
03:08But they haven't made a sound for days.
03:11On the first day, the king explained, my court announcer told them,
03:17The king commands you to sing while he eats his pie lunch, or else.
03:24But my blackbirds didn't make a sound.
03:28On the second day, my court musicians played me some Tweety Birdsong music while I ate my lunch.
03:34But it wasn't as sweet as the blackbirds song, said the king.
03:38On the third day, my court jester told them some bird jokes, in case they needed cheering up.
03:46But they didn't laugh.
03:48Not a single cheep from one of them.
03:51The king sighed.
03:54Now I'm missing the blackbirds' music so much, I can't eat my pie lunch.
03:59I've gone right off it.
04:02Then I had an idea.
04:03Maybe the blackbirds don't like having to sing in the lunchtime pie every day.
04:09Birds like to be outside, in the open air.
04:12So we made a plan.
04:16And I went to talk to the blackbirds.
04:18I told them that the king loved their singing so much, that he was going to set them free.
04:24They'd never have to sing in a lunchtime pie again.
04:28And straight away, all the birds soared up into the sky,
04:32singing the most beautiful song.
04:35The king was overjoyed.
04:38Now the king eats his pie every lunchtime.
04:41And the blackbirds sing happily to him from the trees in the palace garden.
04:45Let's go to the rescue once again.
04:49That was a great adventure.
04:52Oh, it was brilliant, Small.
04:54And the blackbirds loved singing to the king from the garden.
04:57Hey, I know a rhyme about that.
04:59Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of rye.
05:04Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
05:07When the pie was opened, the birds began to sing.
05:11Wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
05:15Hey, hey, hey.
05:17Well, I bet the blackbirds in your story are much happier now they're free.
05:21Oh, yes, Ben.
05:22But I wish we could cook a dainty dish for the king and our cafe.
05:25Come on then, little cook.
05:26Thinking caps on.
05:30Ooh.
05:36I know.
05:37Big cook's big cookery book.
05:40Of course, the big cookery book.
05:42There's recipes for everything in there.
05:44And where do we look for things to cook?
05:47In the book.
05:48In the book.
05:49In big cook's book.
05:50Look, the very thing.
05:54King pie.
05:55The king always has pie for his lunch.
05:58He'll love it.
06:00King pie it is then.
06:01Come on then, little cook.
06:02You read out the ingredients and I'll see if we've got them.
06:05Okay, let's see.
06:06We're going to need broccoli.
06:08Broccoli.
06:08Over we go.
06:09Nice and green.
06:10Got the broccoli small.
06:12Leeks.
06:12Ooh, leeks here as well.
06:14There we go.
06:15Got the leeks.
06:16Carrots.
06:17Carrots.
06:18Lovely orange carrots.
06:20Got those small.
06:21Courgettes.
06:22Ooh, courgettes.
06:23Here we are.
06:24Courgettes, yep.
06:25Mushrooms.
06:26Mushroom in the fridge.
06:28Mushrooms.
06:29Some lovely mushrooms there.
06:31Yep, got those small.
06:32And for the sauce.
06:33Milk.
06:34Milk.
06:35Here we go.
06:36Milk.
06:36Yep.
06:37Nice, got it.
06:38Butter or margarine.
06:39Ooh, in the fridge as well.
06:40Got the butter.
06:42Here we are.
06:42Got that small.
06:43Plain flour.
06:45Plain flour.
06:46Yep.
06:47Here we are.
06:48And pre-rolled puff pastry.
06:50Pre-rolled puff pastry.
06:51Right.
06:52Ooh, we haven't got any of that.
06:55But we have got everything else we need for the recipe.
07:00So, why don't you whiz off and get some, little cook, and I'll get everything ready.
07:04That's a great idea.
07:06See you later.
07:07Hoo-hoo-hoo!
07:10Hey, why don't you come along too?
07:13Whee-hoo!
07:18Go small, go small, whiz away!
07:21I wonder what he'll see today.
07:32This is where puff pastry is made.
07:34This lady is mixing some butter with the flour.
07:38She crumbles the butter into the flour.
07:41Now, the butter and flour are mixed together in a big mixer with some water.
07:48Lid on, mixer on, and around it goes.
07:53Mixy, mixy, mixy.
07:54It's making a dough.
07:55Wow!
07:56This machine is making the dough flat and thin.
08:03That's butter.
08:06It's being folded into the dough.
08:08It's being rolled out lots of times.
08:19Now, the pastry is cut into rectangles, ready for packing.
08:24The puff pastry is just what we need to make a pie for the king.
08:28I'd better get some back to the kitchen for Big Cook Ben.
08:33Bye!
08:42There we go.
08:43All the ingredients are washed and cut up, and I've put some water on to boil.
08:48Wahey!
08:49I'm back!
08:50Hello there, Small.
08:51Did you get the pastry?
08:53I certainly did.
08:54I saw the pastry being rolled out lots of times.
08:58So it was long, flat, and thin.
09:01And here it is.
09:04Whoa!
09:05Hey, hey, hey!
09:06Come on then, Small.
09:07Let's get started.
09:09We're all ready, so take a look.
09:11And we will show you how to cook.
09:17Jellyboats and pirates go.
09:19Princess Peepies.
09:21Parent cakes and fruity smiles.
09:23And envelopes surprise.
09:25We love our cafe and we love to cook.
09:28We have a fantastic recipe book.
09:34He is Big Cook and he is small.
09:38Friends in our cafe, we cook for them all.
09:42When your tummy gets all rumbly,
09:45you're ready for a treat.
09:48You can make something delicious to eat.
09:53Have you cleaned the surfaces?
09:59Yes.
10:00Have you washed your hands?
10:01Yes.
10:02All clean and ready to cook.
10:05Do you remember the ingredients to king pie?
10:09You do?
10:10There was broccoli.
10:12Cut into small pieces called florets.
10:15Leeks.
10:16Two.
10:16Cut into medium slices.
10:18Carrots.
10:19Two.
10:20Cut into thin slices.
10:21Courgette.
10:22One.
10:23Cut into thick slices.
10:25Mushrooms.
10:26Eight.
10:26Sliced.
10:27And for the sauce, milk.
10:29300 millilitres.
10:31Butter.
10:3230 grams.
10:33Plain flour.
10:3430 grams.
10:35And pre-rolled puff pastry.
10:38One packet.
10:39Whoopee!
10:40Let's get started.
10:42So the first thing we're going to do is turn on the oven to 200 degrees Celsius, gas mark
10:47six.
10:48And remember, the oven is hot, hot, hot.
10:51So that's a job for your grown-up helper to do.
10:53And so is this.
10:55Next, we put all the vegetables, apart from the mushrooms, into the steamer over a pan of
11:01boiling water.
11:02Now, this is boiling now, so in go the vegetables.
11:15Here we go.
11:18And on goes the lid.
11:20It needs to steam for about five minutes, until it's soft.
11:23Is there a job for me?
11:25Oh, yes, Mole.
11:26You could unroll the pastry and cut some strips off.
11:30The strips are going to go round the edge of the pie dish.
11:33OK, then.
11:35So while the veggies are cooking, I'm going to melt the butter in another saucepan.
11:40Here we go.
11:43In goes the butter.
11:45And on goes the heat.
11:49Well, that's melting quite nicely.
11:55Then, we can slowly add the flour.
12:00There we go.
12:04And keep stirring it for a few minutes.
12:09Now, this sauce that we're making is called a roux.
12:15I've cut the pastry strip, Ben.
12:17Oh, great.
12:18Lay them round the outside of the pie dish, and when they're all in place, brush them with
12:23a little water.
12:23How are you getting on, Ben?
12:29The veggies are ready now, so I've put them into a bowl, and I've added the mushrooms.
12:34I've also put a ladle full of the veggie juice on to keep them nice and moist.
12:39So now, we can finish the sauce.
12:41I'm going to add the milk to the butter and the flour.
12:47In it goes.
12:50And I'm going to stir it round using a whisk to get rid of all the lumps.
12:56There we go.
13:02Now, as the mixture gets warmer, it should get thicker.
13:08The pie dish is ready, Ben.
13:10Oh, great.
13:13Thanks, Mole.
13:15The sauce is ready now, so turn off the heat, and I'm going to add it to the vegetables.
13:26Nice and creamy.
13:29Here we are.
13:30And then, we can mix it all in.
13:39So, I'm going to give it a bit of a stir.
13:47Hey, Ben!
13:48Look what I found!
13:51It's a blackbird!
13:52Tweet, tweet!
13:53We can bake it in the pie!
13:55The king will love that!
13:58It's called a pie funnel.
13:59Oh, great!
14:02Thanks, Mole.
14:04Put the blackbird in the middle of the pie dish, and then we can spoon in the vegetables.
14:12In they go.
14:17All the way round.
14:22I've already wet the edges of the pastry, so it will stick.
14:26There we are.
14:27Then, ask your grown-up helper to cut a little hole in the middle of the pastry.
14:35Like that.
14:43And then, we're going to lay the pastry over the top of the dish.
14:47With the blackbird's head popping out.
14:57But what's the blackbird for, Ben?
14:59Well, it holds the pastry up, and it lets the steam out.
15:03It's very useful, Ben.
15:06It's just as well I found our little blackbird, isn't it?
15:10If you don't have a pie funnel like this, just make two small holes in the middle of the pastry,
15:15so the steam can escape while the pie's cooking.
15:18Is it ready to cook now, Ben?
15:20Nearly.
15:21We just have to press the lid down.
15:25All the way round.
15:28And then, we can trim around the edges.
15:32I can't wait to see this.
15:40And the last thing.
15:42Just brush the top with a little milk to make it go all golden when it's cooked.
15:50Is it ready now?
15:52Yes, it is, little cook.
15:53So, all we need to do now is pop it in the oven for 30 minutes.
15:58So, oven gloves on.
16:00And over we go.
16:04Open up.
16:06Pop it inside.
16:11And remember, this is a job for your grown-up helper to do,
16:14because the oven is hot, hot, hot.
16:17I'll set the timer for 30 minutes.
16:21There we go.
16:23The pie's cooked and cooled a little.
16:31It looks fit for a king.
16:33Yes, it does, small.
16:35So, here we go.
16:36One king pie coming through.
16:44There.
16:44All done.
16:46So, what do we do now?
16:47Can we play?
16:49Not yet.
16:49Time to clean and put away.
16:52Hooray!
16:53Wash, wipe, scrub and clean.
17:02Make the kitchen sparkle and gleam.
17:04Make the kitchen sparkle and gleam.
17:05Shhh.
17:05My name's Ben.
17:09And my name's Small.
17:11We've got the cleanest kitchen of all.
17:15Tidy all the bits and pop.
17:17The things that help us do our job.
17:19Ingredients we'll put away.
17:20Ready for use another day.
17:22Pots and pans will start to smell.
17:24If we don't wash them really well.
17:26And now it's clear.
17:27Let's all smile.
17:28We'll be finished in a little while.
17:30We're all around.
17:31Up and down.
17:33We've got the cleanest cafe in town.
17:36We've got the cleanest cafe in town.
17:44Aha.
17:45Here comes the plate.
17:47Oh, yes.
17:48And it looks like the king enjoyed his pie.
17:51Look, Small.
17:51He's left a note.
17:53What does it say?
17:54What does it say?
17:55Ho, ho, ho.
17:56Let's see, shall we?
17:58It says,
17:59Dear Big Cook Ben and Little Cook Small,
18:02Thank you for the delicious king pie.
18:04Woo-hoo.
18:05And also for the blackbird surprise inside.
18:08I was in my counting house this morning,
18:11counting out my money.
18:12And here's a small reward for your excellent cooking.
18:15And for getting my royal blackbirds to sing again.
18:18From the king.
18:20Wow.
18:21What's the reward, Ben?
18:23Ho, ho.
18:24Small, look.
18:25It's gold coins.
18:27Lots and lots of gold coins.
18:29There's more than enough here to replace the cups and saucers I broke this morning.
18:34Whoopee.

18:36See you soon.
