00:00In simple terms, methane is far more powerful than carbon dioxide.

00:06Molecule for molecule, it has a far stronger warming effect on the climate than carbon dioxide.

00:13But it only lasts in the atmosphere for 8 to 12 years,

00:17unlike carbon dioxide which stays in the atmosphere for around 300 to 1,000 years.

00:25One of the growing number of scientists working in the field of methane and methane removal is Dr. Renaud de Richter.

00:33So methane is a greenhouse gas, much more powerful than carbon dioxide.

00:38On a 20-year basis, it's 86 times more powerful.

00:42And what is attracting in methane is its short lifetime because it's only between 8 and 12 years lifetime.

00:51So we can act on methane and we should act on methane

00:55because right now the global warming due to methane is 0.5 degrees Celsius

01:02and carbon dioxide is only about 0.8.

01:05So methane is really the second most important greenhouse gas

01:09and acting on it, we can reduce temperatures.
