00:00You're watching Game Show Network.
00:10These remaining six contestants are engaged in a series of elimination contests.
00:15The finalists will then meet our reigning champion in a head-on battle
00:18for this year's tournament championship, worth in cash and prizes, $100,000.
00:25Now meet our host, Jack Berry.
00:38Thank you very much, and welcome once again to the Joker's Wild.
00:44Those of you with us on our last program, which was the first day of our $100,000 tournament,
00:49know that we saw two people leave us, and two people remain with us.
00:52Tom Parrish remains over here as a winner, and John Davis remains as a winner,
00:57and we are going to see a contest with the other four players here.
01:02Right now, let's meet our reigning champion, the man who the winner of all this is going to play against.
01:07Let's meet the man whose title is at stake.
01:09Ladies and gentlemen, here is Frank Dillon.
01:14Frank, hi.
01:15Hi.
01:16Well, how is it backstage through all this?
01:19Well, it's extremely filled with nervous tension, Jack.
01:23Well, I'm sure you must be more nerve-wracking for you than anybody,
01:26because you have to sit through all these preliminary contests to finally find out who you're going to play against.
01:31Yes, and all of them are very good contestants, otherwise they wouldn't be here.
01:35They are, indeed.
01:36Well, you saw John next to you there emerge triumphant, and Tom Parrish,
01:39and one of these guys might be playing you for $100,000.
01:42You met these contenders, but I think you know all of them, do you not?
01:45Over here, you can say, we've said hello to John and Ann and Jenks and Tom Parrish,
01:50and over here we have Susan Reiner and Mark Luckman and Pat Lofton,
01:54and one of these people may, if indeed, be playing against you.
01:57So, we'll tie them over very carefully.
01:59Yes, and I'll be ready when the time comes.
02:02I don't know if that's a threat or a challenge or whatever it is.
02:05As you know, Frank, we're still playing our preliminaries,
02:07and with John and Tom having won theirs,
02:10so it's up to the remaining four now to determine the outcome of their game.
02:15So, let me remind our audience that backstage all of you drew lots
02:18as to who's going to play against whom and who goes first and so forth.
02:21That's all been settled beforehand.
02:22So, if all of you are ready to play, the next four players are ready to do it.
02:25We're all set, too, and we're going to pick up and play
02:28the second of our games, second of our, third of our games,
02:30here, right after these messages.
02:32Here we go with the second day of our Tournament of Champions,
02:44which will conclude in a few days with somebody winning $100,000.
02:47A brief summation of the rules.
02:49They're a little different for our tournament.
02:50We'll have a series of single games in order to obtain a finalist, of course.
02:53That finalist will then meet Frank Dillon to play three games,
02:56the best two out of three winning.
02:59Three jokers can still win a game,
03:00but we've amended the rules that for the tournament,
03:03both players must each get a turn at the wheels in every round.
03:08So, if the first player should get three jokers,
03:09then the second player also must have at least his turn at the wheel.
03:12Maybe he gets three jokers, too.
03:13Throughout the tournament, the players are going to be playing for points
03:16and not for dollars.
03:18So, let's resume now with our third preliminary game.
03:21Johnny Jacobs, who are the next contenders?
03:24Jack the First is a former sandwich lady.
03:26She's now a bookkeeper.
03:27Her previous winnings totaled $17,650.
03:31Meet Ann Jenks.
03:35And number two is a photographer.
03:37His interests are writing and drama.
03:39He won $33,575.
03:42Mark Gluckman.
03:48Players, welcome to the Joker's Wild.
03:50Welcome back, I should say.
03:52Delighted to have you here, Ann and Mark.
03:54Ann, what was the reaction to your appearance and your winning here on the Joker's Wild?
03:59Oh, well, everybody I knew was really thrilled, especially my husband.
04:03Why was that?
04:04Well, we really needed the money at the time,
04:06and we got everything we needed to pay off all of our past debts.
04:09Is that what you did with most of the money?
04:11Yeah, with most of the money, we paid off our bills,
04:14and then we were fortunate enough to have some left over to put away.
04:17And of all the gifts that you got and that you bought, which did you like the most?
04:20The appliances.
04:23I used to pray every time I went to the laundromat that I could have a washing machine,
04:26so it was really an answer to my prayers.
04:29Very good.
04:29Well, you could win an awful lot of washing machines if you could win the $100,000 tournament here,
04:34and you have a very, very stiff competitor, Mark Gluckman.
04:36I know because he is one of the two highest winners in the history of the program
04:41and was on perhaps more games than almost anybody.
04:43Mark, how many games did you actually play in?
04:45Thirteen.
04:46I lost my fourteenth.
04:47You played in thirteen games.
04:48It was an unlucky fourteen.
04:50Susan, one of the people right here beat me.
04:53I see.
04:53And you won in all over $33,000.
04:56Has winning that money changed your life in any way?
04:59In every way.
05:00It's just been really remarkable.
05:04People stop you on the street and mail you fan letters, and it was really nice.
05:09As a matter of fact, I'd really like to thank someone, if possible, for a fan letter.
05:12It was a fifteen-year-old boy, and he was just one of the nicest fan letters.
05:16He didn't give a return address, and his name was John Caligari.
05:19I have no idea where in the country he was, but it was just a delightful letter.
05:23That's very good.
05:23And I'd like to thank him for it.
05:24Oh, you just have.
05:25And anything else you do with the money?
05:26What else did you do with it?
05:27Again, bills, like everyone else.
05:29I stretched out one of the trips that I won from a week to two and a half weeks.
05:34What'd you do?
05:34Where'd you go?
05:35Mexico.
05:36And it was to Extapa, and then we spent another week and a half in Mexico City, in Tosco.
05:42And you also went to see your parents, did you not?
05:43No, my parents came out here, matter of fact.
05:45They just have just left.
05:47And my brother's out here right now, and he's in the audience.
05:50My parents live in Florida, and they'll be seeing the show.
05:54So, uh...
05:54All right, then.
05:55Let's get to it, because one of you may go into the quarterfinals, possibly the semifinals,
06:00maybe the finals for $100,000.
06:01Here are the categories we'll be using in the game between Ann Jenks and Mark Pluckman.
06:05They are the Bible, followed by Olympic Games.
06:09Then we have Democrats, all about languages.
06:12And finally, plays and playwrights.
06:15Ann Jenks, play very carefully.
06:17$100,000 potentially at stake.
06:21Play well.
06:21Good luck.
06:24You have Democrats, a joker.
06:26There's a big one.
06:27200 points.
06:30That's if she decides to play it.
06:33I guess I'll take Democrats for 200.
06:34All right.
06:36A member of a powerful American family, this Democrat was the youngest man ever to be elected
06:40President of the United States.
06:43Name this fondly remembered chief executive.
06:45John F. Kennedy.
06:46Correct, for 200 big points.
06:50Well, Mark, that's a little intimidating to start off with your opponent getting 200 points,
06:54but if I know you from the past, you were both skillful and lucky.
06:57Let's see if it holds up here as you spin.
06:59We hope so.
07:00You have the Bible, and a joker, and a triple.
07:04Oh, the Bible's a killer.
07:15It's not supposed to be.
07:19I'm going to go off the board.
07:20Okay.
07:21There's strategy at work for you.
07:22For 100 and all about languages.
07:24All right.
07:25He is giving up 200 points to go for a more sure category, which he feels he can score.
07:30And here it is.
07:31Many small clothing stores have sprung up all over the country.
07:34They are usually called by the French word, which literally translated means shop.
07:39For 100 points, what is that word?
07:41Boutique.
07:41Yes, you have 100 points.
07:46And your strategy paid off.
07:47We'll know whether it paid off completely as we get further into the game.
07:51Second spin for Ann Jenks.
07:54Joker.
07:55Olympic Games and another triple.
07:59I'll take Olympic Games with 200, Jack.
08:02Okay.
08:03This will bring you to 400 points within striking distance of a win.
08:07In 776 B.C., the first Olympic Games were played near Olympia, Greece.
08:13For a grand total of 400 points, in which Greek city did the modern Olympics begin in 1896?
08:22Advent.
08:22Yes.
08:23You have 400 points.
08:24Mark Duxley, you're going to have to come from behind, and you'll need a good spin to do it.
08:32Big trouble.
08:35Bible, Joker, and a triple.
08:43There may be some kind of ironic justice in all this.
08:48I'm going to have to go off the board again for All About Languages for 100.
08:52Okay.
08:52Here is the question.
08:56The Latin phrase, veni vidi vici, is associated with Julius Caesar.
09:00For another 100 points, what is the translation of that foreign phrase?
09:04I came, I saw, I conquered.
09:05And you did.
09:06And you have 200 points.
09:09Score 400 to 200.
09:12And that was two unusual bits of strategy you saw Mark Gluckman work.
09:17That was ignorance.
09:18You never know.
09:19You might have been able to answer the Bible question, Mark.
09:21I don't know.
09:22We'll never know, will we?
09:23No, no, no.
09:24How do you know?
09:25Well, let's see.
09:26Okay.
09:26Ann, it's your spin again.
09:30Bible, the Bible, and Democrats.
09:33I'll take the Bible for 100.
09:35Boy, this is really unique.
09:38For 100 points, if you answer correctly, you'll have 500, which would be enough to win.
09:46But Mark does get that final spin.
09:48In 1604, this English king called a conference of 47 scholars and asked them to prepare a new translation of the Bible.
09:56For 500 points and a possible win, what was the king's name?
10:01King James.
10:02The first of England.
10:03You have 500 points.
10:09Incidentally, Mark, that would have been one of your questions.
10:12Could you have answered that?
10:13Yes.
10:13You could have.
10:15Okay?
10:16You know what the situation is now better than I.
10:18She already has 500 points.
10:19You need a triple.
10:21You need the only one thing it can tire is three jokers.
10:24If anything comes up other than three jokers, Ann Jenks goes on into the quarterfinals,
10:29and you go leave this program with the $33,000 you've already won.
10:34Let's see what happens.
10:35Give them a spin.
10:39Nope.
10:40It is all over.
10:41Congratulations, Ann Jenks.
10:49You've won the game, clearly, fairly, and you go into the quarterfinals.
11:02You will be returning in a day or so when you'll meet your next opponent.
11:05As few, Mark Gluckman, as the first or second highest money winner in the history of our program,
11:10winning over $33,000 in regular play.
11:12I know this is a bitter disappointment to you.
11:14To alleviate that disappointment somewhat, there will be a lovely prize for you worth about $500.
11:19We know your life has changed for the better since you won all that money.
11:22We wish you good luck in the future.
11:24A nice big hand for both players.
11:25We'll be seeing Ann Jenks a little later on, and we'll be back right after this.
11:33Now, for your...
11:36Now we go to the last of the single matches.
11:39The next two players you're going to meet are the last two of the eight original players who started.
11:43You'll be eventually seeing four of them back, and then two of them,
11:46and then finally, only one will stay with $100,000.
11:51Johnny Jacobs, who are the next two players?
11:54Jack, first we have an instructional aide and mother of two.
11:57She likes to cook, and her previous winnings totaled $18,825.
12:01Meet Susan Reiner.
12:04And an opera student.
12:06She also works as a cashier.
12:07Previous winnings totaled $15,525.
12:10Meet Pat Lofton.
12:12Girls, welcome.
12:17You're the first two ladies to play against each other,
12:19and we're delighted to have you both back with us here on the Joker's Wild.
12:23Susan, you won over $18,000,
12:25and what was the reaction of your friends, neighbors,
12:27to your appearance on the original Joker's Wild?
12:29Well, other than becoming famous for the gal who beat Mark Gluckman,
12:33I've gotten to be pretty well known in my church,
12:35and at the school where I work, all the children keep on saying,
12:38I saw you on the Joker's Wild, Mrs. Reiner.
12:40It's really been fun.
12:41I can only say that if Mark Gluckman had gotten well known at church,
12:44he might still be here.
12:46Very good.
12:50What did you do with the cash that you won?
12:54Well, we've had a dream for a number of years to expand the size of our house,
12:57so we put on a new living room, and we have a new bedroom on the house now, too.
13:01Well, those are very worthwhile things.
13:02And Pat Lofton, of course, is an opera student,
13:04and how are your opera studies progressing, Pat?
13:06They're progressing very well.
13:08I'm still exercising on them.
13:09What did you happen to do with your winnings when you were on?
13:12You won over $15,000.
13:14Well, I did something unusual.
13:15I paid off my debts.
13:18Everybody paid off.
13:19We must have had the brokest contestants in the world here on the program.
13:23You better believe it.
13:24What was your favorite gift of all that you won?
13:26You know, I won a car.
13:27I won all of these beautiful, fantastic prizes,
13:30but my favorite was the food processor.
13:31Why is that?
13:33Because that's the one I use.
13:35That's it.
13:35I don't blame you.
13:36Well, here's something else you're going to use, the categories.
13:39One of you could emerge and go into the semifinals,
13:41so be very careful how you play with these categories.
13:44They are Republicans, followed by film biographies,
13:48potluck, that could be almost anything,
13:49famous Joes, and all those ologies.
13:53You're up first, Susan Reiner.
13:54Spin, play very carefully.
13:56500 points wins.
13:58Good luck.
13:58Okay, thank you, Jack.
14:01You get a joker, potluck, and Republicans.
14:05I think I'll try potluck for 100, Jack.
14:07All right.
14:08A political column entitled The Washington Merry-Go-Round
14:10appears daily in The Washington Post
14:12and is one of the most widely read
14:14and controversial columns in the United States.
14:16Name the journalist who writes The Washington Merry-Go-Round.
14:19Is that Art Buckwold?
14:21No, it is not.
14:22You could pick up 100 very important points, Pat,
14:24if you know the answer.
14:25Jack Anderson.
14:25Yes, that's right.
14:26You have 100 points.
14:28Now for your own first spin.
14:31Good luck.
14:32Okay.
14:34Republicans, all those ologies and film biographies.
14:38Film biology, please.
14:40This 1975 film told the story of Jill Kinmont,
14:43a young girl who survived a terrible skiing accident.
14:46She overcame her handicap and became an elementary school teacher.
14:49Name the film.
14:50Other Side of the Mountain.
14:51Correct.
14:51Correct.
14:52You have 150 points.
14:54So at the end of the round, 0 to 150.
14:56Susan Reiner.
15:00Hot luck.
15:01All those ologies, not very good.
15:03Famous Joes.
15:04I'll try all those ologies, please.
15:07You won't have much time for anything but reading if you get into this ology.
15:12What ology is a collection of literary works?
15:19Can't do it.
15:2050 points more for you if you can tell me, Pat.
15:22Anthology.
15:23Anthology.
15:23Right.
15:24You have 200 points.
15:25That's more.
15:25And your spin.
15:30Joker.
15:31Joker.
15:32Famous Joes.
15:34Famous Joes, please, for 200.
15:36Who is that?
15:36Famous Joes, please, for 200.
15:38Correct answer brings you to 400 points.
15:41You'll be knocking on the door of a victory.
15:44The classic novels Lord Jim and Nostromo
15:46were written by a seafaring Polish author named Joseph.
15:51For a grand total of 400 points, give me his last name.
15:54Conrad.
15:54That's the one.
15:55You have 400 points.
15:58Score, 400 to zero.
16:00Susan Reiner, you're going to have to do a mighty lot of comebacking.
16:04Let's see if you get a good spin.
16:06Okay, thank you.
16:09Famous Joes, film bios, and a pair.
16:12I'll try film bios for 100, please.
16:15In an extreme case of typecasting,
16:16Muhammad Ali portrayed himself in the 1977 movie About His Life.
16:21For 100 points, what was the complimentary title
16:24of that film biography?
16:25The Greatest?
16:26Yes, right.
16:27You have 100 points.
16:31And now, Pat Lofton, with the right spin and the right answer,
16:35you could become one of our distinguished quarter finalists.
16:38Let's see what you get for a spin.
16:40Okay.
16:43Hot luck, Republicans.
16:44Nope.
16:45The game goes on.
16:46Famous Joes.
16:47I think I'll try Famous Joes for 50.
16:49Correct answer brings you to 450 points.
16:52Marilyn Monroe married him.
16:54Simon and Garfinkel asked him where he'd gone.
16:56And baseball made him its first $100,000 player.
17:00For 450 points, name that famous Jo.
17:03Joe DiMaggio.
17:04Joe, Joe.
17:04DiMaggio.
17:05Jolt and Joe.
17:06You have 450 points.
17:08Your spin, Susan.
17:12Republicans, a pair, and potluck.
17:15Okay.
17:15I'll try Republicans for 100, Jack.
17:17All right.
17:17When this military leader was elected president in 1952,
17:20he became the first Republican to hold that office in 20 years.
17:24Name this former general.
17:26Eisenhower.
17:26Right.
17:26Eisenhower, you have 200 points.
17:30Pat Lofton, I point out to you, you only need 50 points.
17:33Any spin you get will be enough if you answer the question.
17:36Give him a spin.
17:39All those allergies, Joker, and a triple if you want to play it that way.
17:43No, I think I'll take all those allergies for 50, please.
17:46Right.
17:47You're playing for 50 points.
17:48Yes.
17:48That's your privilege.
17:49If you answer correctly, you will have 500 points.
17:52You will become one of our four remaining quarterfinalists.
17:56Here it is.
17:57Lots of folks are interested in asking, what's your sign?
17:59That's because they're into the study of how the stars influence life.
18:03For 500 points, name what ology is it?
18:07Astrology.
18:08You are the winner.
18:09Congratulations, Pat Lofton.
18:19Thank you, sir.
18:20You join the other three players, and you will be one of the quarterfinalists on the march to $100,000.
18:27I know how disappointing this is for you, Susan Reiner, but you do get a lovely consolation gift worth $500, and I know that the $18,000 you won in the previous game came in very handy.
18:35Absolutely.
18:36And we'll get a chance, hopefully, if there's time to meet all of our four quarterfinalists in just a moment.
18:41But first, stick around for these important words.
18:48Some of our departing contestants will receive West Bend's 10-cup automatic quick-drip coffee maker.
18:53Features a double-filter system that lets you brew delicious coffee with or without paper filters.
18:56And Theragrand high-potency vitamins supplied to the U.S. Olympic Committee, and the vitamins most recommended by physicians and pharmacists.
19:03Theragrand and Theragrand M with minerals.
19:05Plus, Rain Dance Car Wax lasts longer than the leading car waxes.
19:08Water-beating proves that DuPont guarantees it.
19:10Now, back to Jack Barry.
19:14All right, these envelopes in my hand may have a significant effect on these four people up here.
19:18These are the four quarterfinalists.
19:20We're going to draw people.
19:21We're going to draw lots right here on stage to decide who plays against whom and in what order you're going to play.
19:25There are four envelopes.
19:26Each will bear a number.
19:28Now, one's going to play against two.
19:29Number three is going to play against four.
19:31The odd numbers, one and three, will occupy the first position, and two and four will occupy the second position.
19:35Will you each please take an envelope?
