00:00Released on bail and bound for Thailand.
00:06Do you want to say anything to the victim's family?
00:09Walking from court, dual Thai Australian citizen Pai Rat Junsonran was arrested on Friday,
00:16a week after a hit and run on Darwin's busy Bagot Road, which killed a 27-year-old Indigenous woman.
00:23We have now conducted an investigation and a 61-year-old male was arrested
00:29and charged with one count of hit and run causing death.
00:33Supported by his family, the court heard Mr Junsonran had no criminal record
00:38and very strong ties to the Darwin community.
00:42He does not present really a risk of re-offending or of flight, said his lawyer Samuel Naylor.
00:49His cooperation with police in this investigation,
00:52including voluntarily driving the vehicle to the station to undergo forensic testing,
00:57has been quite extensive.
00:59Police didn't say whether or not he'd turned himself in, but had a warning.
01:03If you are involved in a traffic crash, you are obliged to render assistance if possible
01:10and notify police.
01:12And if you don't do those things, if you leave the scene and you fail to tell the police
01:17or you don't render assistance where possible, we will conduct a rigorous investigation
01:22to identify those people and hold them to account.
01:26Judge John Bertoli ultimately agreed to grant bail to Mr Junsonran
01:31and go ahead with a pre-planned trip to Thailand, leaving Darwin on the 6th of January
01:36to return in a month.
01:38Once he's back in the territory, he'll have to surrender his passport
01:41and faces a maximum of 10 years behind bars.
01:45He'll return to court in March.
01:52So, let's take a long run.
