00:43As the world and Venezuelans await for the U.S.'s next move,
00:52acting president, Delce Rodriguez, has offered to collaborate with the United States
00:57as the deposed leader, Nicolas Maduro, who was captured by American forces, appears before a New York court.
01:06In a statement on social media, Rodriguez said Venezuela aspires to live without external threats,
01:12in an environment of respect and international cooperation.
01:16She urged President Trump for peace and dialogue, reiterating Maduro's message.
01:21The statement also comes amid Trump's threat of another strike on Venezuela
01:28if the ruling authorities don't cooperate with the U.S. efforts to open its oil industry and stop drug trafficking.
01:37There are mixed reactions on the U.S. action from Venezuelans within the country and abroad.
01:43Venezuelans in Barcelona waved flags and sang as they celebrated the topple of Maduro.
01:53Venezuelans in Colombia demanded transition of power and called for fresh elections.
01:58This is what has to happen. Why? Because government entities are still not clean,
02:06the defense minister still hasn't left, still hasn't handed over power,
02:10so we can't let our political leaders take over the government until they leave.
02:14It would be a risk to leave them and put our leaders in.
02:18That's why we need to go through a transition process, which Donald Trump will lead.
02:22He said it clearly. It's a transition process where we will administer the country,
02:27and that means cleaning up government entities, cleaning up the country,
02:31and then our leaders, our political leaders will take office through elections
02:35or by validating the elections that were already held the year before last.
02:44But in Caracas, supporters of Maduro gathered near the Mira Flores Palace,
02:49voicing their support for the wrongful arrest of Maduro and his wife.
02:52They demanded that Venezuelan sovereignty should be respected.
03:00Today, I'm here in support of President Maduro and his wife,
03:04protesting against that unjust kidnapping.
03:06We respect the sovereign decisions of all governments,
03:09and we demand that same respect in return.
03:12I want to emphasize that President Trump must rectify his attitude towards us.
03:17I want to define what is the attitude he will have towards us.

03:38A reminder of the American voices who spoke out against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
03:45In 1989, during President George H.W. Bush, U.S. invaded Panama
03:50and deposed the de facto ruler, General Manuel Noriega,
03:54who was wanted by the U.S. authorities for racketeering and drug trafficking.
03:57You know, I'm here because I think it's outrageous what the U.S. government did in Venezuela.
04:04Whatever you may think of the Maduro government, that's not the issue.
04:08But the U.S. government has no right to go into a sovereign country
04:12and basically openly say we're going to take the oil, we're going to take the gold,
04:17we're going to exploit the resources.
04:19This has nothing to do with defending the working people of Venezuela.
04:24That's no concern to the U.S. government, Democrat or Republican alike.
04:30And this isn't the first time.
04:32You know, there's a whole history of the U.S. intervening in Latin America
04:36and around the world to defend the interests of the U.S. ruling class.
04:42The United Nations Security Council also held an urgent session
04:46following the Venezuelan crisis.
04:49Somalia presently holds the rotating presidency of the council.
04:52Russia and China, both UNSC permanent members have condemned the U.S. action
04:58and urged for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife.
05:01He has become rich, incredibly wealthy,
05:07off the misery of untold numbers of Americans, Venezuelans and others,
05:13aiding and abetting international terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.
05:18The U.S. actions by the U.S. constitute a clear violation of international law
05:28and the basic norms of international relations.
05:31Contravening the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter,
05:35China calls upon the United States to ensure the personal safety of President Maduro and his wife,
05:42to release them immediately, to cease subverting the Venezuelan government
05:46and to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation.
05:55Maduro, his wife, son and allies face charges of providing law enforcement cover
06:00and logistic support to major drug trafficking groups,
06:04who in return sent profits to high-ranking government officials under Maduro
06:08and were given protection in exchange.
06:11He has been indicted on four counts,
06:13narco-terrorism conspiracy,
06:15cocaine importation conspiracy,
06:17possession of machine guns and destructive devices.
06:20Trump's actions have been criticized domestically.
06:25Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has criticized Trump
06:29of pardoning a convicted drug trafficker,
06:32referring to a former Honduras President Orlando Hernandez,
06:36who was convicted by U.S. court and then pardoned later by President Trump.
06:41Hernandez was sentenced to 45 years in prison for helping drug traffickers
06:46and using his government position
06:48and helping to bring in hundreds of tons of cocaine into United States.
06:54The capture of Maduro is also seen by many
06:57as an effort by Trump administration
06:59to divert attention from Epstein files
07:02as it comes days after thousands of files were released
07:05and more are being expected to be released post-New Year.

07:11And joining me now is Rohit Sharma, my colleague from Washington, D.C.
07:17Rohit, a lot is happening when it comes to Nicolas Maduro,
07:21Washington, D.C., as also the latest that you've just put out.
07:25Let's begin with that.
07:27A post by the State Department clearly spelling out the Monroe Doctrine
07:32by the Trump administration saying the Western Hemisphere,
07:35which is what Marco Rubio said in interviews,
07:38is ours and there can be no one else.
07:40There's no room for anybody else to step into that sphere.
07:44That's a message coming in directly from Washington, D.C.
07:50Well, first things first, Geeta, a very happy New Year
07:52and a great interview with President Putin.
07:54We haven't had a chance to talk, but wanted to put it on the record here.
07:57So, yes, a lot is happening in Washington, D.C.
08:01Look, I think, you know, what we've seen over the past 48 hours
08:05is what has been now described by even Secretary Rubio
08:09as Dondro Doctrine, where Western Hemisphere belongs to the U.S.
08:13We've also seen reports coming in and statements coming in
08:16from the Mexican president who herself said that, you know,
08:18this hemisphere does not belong to anybody
08:21and, you know, we're not going to tolerate this.
08:22So I think President Trump is trying to make a point.
08:25He had outlined this in his national security document,
08:29which came out last year when he talked about Western Hemisphere.
08:32And I think he's taken action on that.
08:34Now, it's important to also understand,
08:36and we were obviously playing those visuals from a U.N.
08:39Security Council, that there have been opposition
08:41registered at least in the U.N. by the Chinese and the Russians.
08:44But also, we also saw a Venezuelan U.N. diplomat.
08:49They're talking about it and kind of alluding to the fact
08:52which the U.S. has also said that this wasn't an invasion.
08:55You know, if this was, there would probably be nobody
08:57in the U.N. representing Venezuela.
08:59So I think it's an uncharted territory.
09:01We do not know what's going to happen.
09:03A lot will be decided this week.
09:05We've been told there could be U.S. delegation meetings
09:07with Venezuelans.
09:08So we'll have to wait and watch if they fly out to D.C.
09:10or if somebody flies to Venezuela.
09:12But as of this time, as of this moment,
09:15as President Trump himself has said,
09:17the policy of Venezuela would be decided by Washington, D.C.
09:21Right.
09:22Right.
09:22Also, Rohit, the other very important thing,
09:24we can see visuals of Maduro being taken to court.
09:27We'll talk about that before that.
09:29Another very important meeting that's underway
09:31is at the U.N. headquarters,
09:32the United Nations Security Council meeting.
09:35U.S. envoy to the U.N. has very clearly spelt out
09:38that this is not them trying to conquer a country
09:41or take over a country or occupy a country.
09:44It was in the sphere of legality.
09:46But that's not what the others in the room think.
09:49And there's certainly a demand now for the release of Maduro.
09:52Where is that headed?
09:55Well, look, I think it is, as I said,
09:58you know, we do not know, right?
09:59I mean, so if you look,
10:00if you adhere to the American side of the things,
10:02you know, they obviously have said,
10:03and like Rubio said,
10:04that we acted on behalf of FBI and DOJ
10:08to get this person who they believe is responsible
10:11for sending drugs to America
10:13and has weapons and whatnot.
10:15So again, you know,
10:16that's the defense the U.S. has been using.
10:18And they're like,
10:18we're still working with the VP
10:20who was part of the Maduro regime,
10:22and they have not invaded the country.
10:24There are no boots on the ground.
10:26So that's one aspect of it.
10:27The other aspect is,
10:28we haven't seen something like this,
10:30where, you know,
10:31a country would go and remove somebody from power,
10:34literally, you know,
10:36extract them from their home.
10:38So I think we do not know how this is going to be,
10:40but we do know for a fact,
10:41like, I think this is a very evolving situation.
10:44I think the U.S. has said it in many interviews now
10:47that they are willing to work
10:48with whoever's left in Venezuela.
10:50And if they don't follow
10:51or tow the Washington, D.C. line,
10:53then there will be consequences.
10:54Right.
10:55And briefly, Rohit,
10:56the court hearings are underway, right?
10:58If I'm not wrong?
11:00Yes, it will be presided by Judge Alvin Hellstein.
11:04He's a 92-year-old Clinton appointee.
11:06So liberal in that sense.
11:07And Maduro will be represented by two judges.
11:11Judge Alvin, my bad.
11:14The lawyer, two lawyers.
11:15Him and his wife have different lawyers.
11:17And they would be represented at noon,
11:19which, again, is under proceedings right now.

11:43While speaking to reporters,
11:44President Trump reasserted
11:45that the United States needs Greenland
11:47for its national security
11:48and added that he would return
11:50to the topic in two months.
11:53Reacting to Trump's comment,
11:54Greenland's leader declared,
11:55enough is enough.
11:56And Denmark's allies in Europe affirmed
11:59that the Arctic island's future
12:01must be determined by its own people.

12:07said in a statement,
12:08and I quote,

12:10says that we need Greenland
12:12and links us to Venezuela

12:15it's not just wrong,
12:16it's disrespectful.
12:18Meanwhile,
12:19Danish Prime Minister
12:20Maid Frederiksen,
12:21also in a post,
12:22urged the U.S. president
12:23to stop threatening
12:24to take over Greenland.
12:26Meanwhile,
12:27Germany has also insisted
12:28that Greenland
12:29is an autonomously administered territory
12:32and belongs to Denmark.
12:34Trump has advocated
12:36for Greenland
12:36to become part of the U.S.
12:38Its strategic position
12:39between Europe and North America
12:40makes it a key site
12:42for the U.S. ballistic missile defense system,
12:45while its mineral wealth
12:46has heightened U.S. interest
12:48in reducing reliance
12:49on Chinese exports.
12:51Trump's interest in Greenland,
12:52and if it's included,
12:54in the United States,
12:55could heighten tensions
12:56between the U.S.,
12:57Europe, and NATO,
12:59and may pose tensions
13:00and instability
13:01in what they want to protect,
13:04that's the Western Hemisphere.

16:55the world's
16:55largest proven
16:56oil reserves,
16:57over 300 billion
16:59barrels.
17:00And buried
17:00under years
17:01of sanctions,
17:02mismanagement
17:03and isolation
17:04are stranded
17:05Indian investments
17:06worth billions
17:07of dollars.
17:08At the center
17:09of the story
17:10is ONGC
17:11Videsh,
17:12India's
17:12overseas oil arm.
17:14For years,
17:15OVL has been
17:15trapped in
17:16Venezuela by
17:17US sanctions.
17:18Fields it owns
17:19are dry not
17:20because the oil
17:21isn't there,
17:22but because it
17:23could not bring
17:24in rigs,
17:25equipment or
17:26even audit
17:26its accounts.
17:28Then there is
17:29the money
17:29Venezuela owes
17:30India,
17:31over $536 million
17:33in unpaid
17:34dividends up to
17:352014,
17:36and nearly the
17:37same amount
17:37again for the
17:38years after that.
17:40Frozen because
17:41Venezuelan
17:42authorities refused
17:43audits.
17:44In total,
17:45close to a
17:45billion dollars
17:46locked away
17:47by sanctions
17:48and chaos.
17:50Trump's takeover
17:51of Venezuela
17:52changes the
17:52equation overnight.
17:54Under US
17:55control,
17:55sanctions are
17:56expected to be
17:57selectively eased.
17:58American oil
17:59majors are
18:00already set to
18:01return.
18:02Infrastructure
18:03will be
18:03refurbished,
18:04exports
18:05restarted,
18:06and critically,
18:07companies that
18:08were previously
18:09blocked may
18:10now be allowed
18:11to operate

21:58conclude the
21:59bilateral trade

22:00it was launched
22:01on, you
22:02know, February
22:032025, both
22:03the leaders
22:04announced it

22:06And in
22:07November,

22:07had a last
22:08round and
22:09both the
22:09sides expressed
22:10their satisfaction
22:11that, you

22:12is considerable
22:13progress.

22:14it is stuck
22:15at the level
22:16of the
22:16leadership and
22:17I think
22:17President
22:17Donald
22:17Trump is
22:18actually
22:19looking at
22:19something which
22:20can really
22:21make him
22:21happy.

22:22he has to
22:23define what
22:24makes him
22:24happy but
22:25so far
22:26nothing has
22:27worked and
22:27the bilateral

22:30still on and
22:31it is still
22:31pending to be
22:32concluded.

22:38the fact that
22:39Lindsey Graham is
22:40spilling the
22:40beans in public
22:42of conversations
22:43that were held
22:44in private.
