00:00Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured by U.S. forces
00:11during a large-scale nighttime military operation early Saturday, President Trump announced.
00:17The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela
00:21and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown
00:27out of the country, Trump posted on Truth Social. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S.
00:32law enforcement, he wrote. Trump celebrated the mission in which Maduro and First Lady were flown
00:36to the U.S., where the Venezuelan president is set to stand trial on criminal charges.
00:41A lot of good planning and a lot of great, great troops and great people, Trump told the New York
00:45Times. It was a brilliant operation, actually. Trump ordered airstrikes on military sites around
00:51the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, with at least seven explosions and low-flying aircrafts reported
00:56in the region, which began around 2 a.m. local time amid heightened tensions between Maduro and
01:01the U.S. The strike sent plumes of smoke and fire into the air and caused power outages.
01:06The Venezuelan government denounced the alleged attack as an aggression from the U.S. and a
01:11violation of the United Nations Charter. The objective of this attack is none other than to seize
01:16Venezuela's strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals, attempting to forcibly break the
01:22nation's political independence, the government said in a statement. They will not succeed. After
01:27more than 200 years of independence, the people and their legitimate government remain steadfast
01:32in defense of sovereignty and the inalienable right to determine their own destiny. People,
01:37take to the streets, the government's statement read. Colombian President Gustavo Petro claimed his
01:42neighboring country was attacked and called for a meeting between the Organization of American
01:46States and the United Nations, and Cuban officials called the strike criminal activity by the U.S.
01:52In a video address that aired on Thursday, Maduro had accused the U.S. of wanting to force a
01:57government change in the South American country and access its oil reserves. Then on Friday,
02:03Maduro met with Special Envoy for Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Presidential Palace in Caracas
02:08to reaffirm ties with China amid tensions with the U.S., but also claimed his regime was ready to
02:14discuss an agreement with the U.S. to prevent drug trafficking. The U.S. military has carried out
02:19drone strikes off the Venezuelan coast on suspected drug smuggling boats. 63-year-old Maduro, who has
02:25held power in Venezuela for 13 years, has been charged with narco-terrorism by the U.S.
