Kyokushin Karate is widely regarded as one of the most physically demanding styles of Karate, known for being the first to emphasize full-contact training. Its rigorous practice can lead to significant physical strain, sometimes resulting in injuries not only to opponents but also to practitioners themselves. Sparring sessions involve powerful, uncompromising strikes, reflecting the core belief that intense training conditions best prepare students for real-life combat situations.

00:29Hello everybody, it's me, the Real Joe, and this is Martial Arts Styles, a brief history
00:48of Kyokushin Karate.
00:51Kyokushin Karate is a hardcore style of Japanese karate, founded in 1964.
00:59The style was founded by Mas Oyama, who is a Korean martial arts master who lived most
01:05of his life in Japan.
01:08Kyokushin Karate is considered the first full contact style of karate.
01:14Mas Oyama, who was born in South Korea in 1923, was sent to China to live with his sister.
01:21There, he studied Chinese martial arts from a person who was working on his sister's
01:28farm.
01:29In 1938, he left China to go to Japan where he would join the Yamanashi Aviation School,
01:38which at the time was part of the Japanese Imperial Army Aviation School.
01:43After World War II, he left aviation school and opened up a karate school.
01:49He had to then close the school shortly after opening it because no one wanted him around
01:55due to his Korean heritage.
01:57In 1946, he moved to Tokyo, met a Japanese woman who would become his wife, enrolled in a university
02:08school.
02:09That his wife's mother worked in, and sought instruction from a Shotokan karate master,
02:15Igo Funakashi, who was the second son of the founder of Shotokan karate, Ichin Funakashi.
02:24Because he felt unwanted in Japan, he trained in solitude.
02:30After two years of studying Shotokan karate, he started studying Gojuru karate.
02:36After World War II, he would get into numerous fights with U.S. military personnel.
02:42He hated the fact that a lot of his friends were killed in the war, and that the U.S. took
02:50over Japan.
02:51His Gojuru karate instructor, Sonai Chu, informed him that he should go up into a lone mountain
02:59and focus on his mind and body.
03:02Mass Oyama followed his teacher's advice and went up into a lonely mountain to focus on
03:09his mind and body for three years.
03:12The training was so harsh that he almost gave up.
03:16After taking more advice from his teacher, he spent the rest of his 14 months on the mountain.
03:24When he came down from the mountain, he was a much stronger person.
03:29In 1964, after Mas Oyama founded Kayoku Shin Karate, he handpicked instructors who had experience
03:38in marketing and recruiting.
03:40The style expanded quickly.
03:43Today, Kayoku Shin Karate is still the most hardcore style of karate and has been featured
03:51on many shows and in movies.
