Shito-Ryu Karate is one of the major traditional styles of Okinawan Karate, distinguished by its extensive kata curriculum and blend of linear and circular techniques. It holds particular significance for me as the first style of Karate I began studying, laying the foundation for my martial arts journey.

00:39Hello everybody, it's me, The Real Joe, and this is Martial Arts Styles, a brief history of Shitoru Karate.
00:48Shitoru Karate was founded in 1934 by Kenwa Mabuni.
00:54Kenwa Mabuni began learning Shurite Karate at the age of 13 in his hometown of Shuri Okinawa.
01:03His teacher was none other than Shurite Karate master Anko Itsu.
01:10Kenwa Mabuni trained with many Okinawan Karate masters. Chojin Miyagi, the founder of Gojuru Karate, introduced him to Kenryo Higiana, who was a Nahate Karate master and started learning under him.
01:29Kenwa Mabuni decided to use the best examples from Nahate and Gojuru to form Shitoru.
01:37Kenwa Mabuni would later move to mainland Japan to help spread karate. His vision was to not just pass the teachings down to family, but to spread it.
01:46Most karate teachers during that time believed that it should be that way. But it was Kenwa Mabuni who made it happen.
