Bill Viola presents for the first time in Europe his video “Night Journey” (2005) in the unique setting of the church of the convent of Santo Domingo, in Pollença (Mallorca, Spain). Evolving from an adaptation of the Opera “Tristan und Isolde”, in which the artist worked with director Esa Pekka Salonen, this video installation takes the exploration of spirituality that is a recurrent theme in Viola’s work to the sacred space of an old church. As one of the curators recalls in this interview, it was important for the artist to present this work in the particular setting of a church with a Mediterranean atmosphere. Curated by Karin Giaccobi and Biel Amer, the exhibition is open from July 20th to September 17th, 2006. By VTV correspondent Pau Waelder.

00:00What would I say if I would like to do it?
00:30A lot of people say, especially because it's American, they say Viola.
00:49And they have an interview that he did in New York when he was presenting this video
00:56saying that he is Viola and he is from Italy.
01:01He has spent a lot of years in Italy.
01:04So, let's say, a little bit, what would be the spirit of the Mediterranean,
01:09he knows over the world,
01:11and he has a lot of photographs from Pallanza,
01:14which he took from his website,
01:17to understand that it was very important for this exhibition
01:22in this particular space.
01:24In New York City, with an air very Mediterranean,
01:27with a scenography,
01:29which he knows perfectly,
01:30not only for the purpose of the work,
01:32but for the experiences of his own,
01:34that he had lived.
01:36He thought that this was the most ideal
01:40to do in New York City,
01:42because maybe there were other people,
01:44because we had seen fragments of other people,
01:46and we also coincided,
01:48that there is also a very Mediterranean element,
01:50which is strong.
01:51And, on the other hand,
01:52this Mediterranean tradition of Mallorca,
01:54with marine marine,
01:55which has always gone to the hands,
01:57and who had put,
01:58at that time,
01:59a speum,
02:00and now,
02:01to the blood.
02:02It is to say,
02:03these are two elements,
02:04which are more good to understand here,
02:05but perhaps the United States,
02:07or the North of Europe.
02:09The New York City,
02:10the United States,
02:11In New York City,
02:12the United States of muscle,
02:13of course,
02:14in a very long way,
02:15the Indianapolis of theDaniel,
02:17the easternosaurus,
02:18of course.
02:19As that has been constituted,
02:20I think the same thing,
02:21which does not matter here,
02:22which does not matter here,
02:23at the end,
02:24it is the same thing,
02:25I think,
02:26to the world,
02:27which does not matter here,
02:28and that's what the people who have to do!
02:29I think it is very much more.
02:30I think it's been a bit bold,
02:31and I think that's one of theристys.
02:32I think it's a great thing,
02:33and I think it's kind of interesting,
02:34I think it's a big deal for each other,
02:35and I think it's this new thing,
