Lee Bul. The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun / Hauser & Wirth New York

Hauser & Wirth New York presents Lee Bul: The Anatomy of Every Setting Sun at its 22nd Street space from 10 September to 24 October 2026. The gallery’s first exhibition with the artist is organized by guest curator Dr. Jiyoon Lee and brings together major new sculptures with recent paintings. It precedes the opening of her traveling survey Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp on 13 November.

The central work is Willing To Be Vulnerable—Metalized Balloon (2015–2016/2020), a large zeppelin-like sculpture of PET film and other lightweight materials. New paintings from the Untitled (Willing To Be Vulnerable—Velvet) series combine photographs of the artist’s sculptures with studio fragments and mother-of-pearl on silk velvet. Works from the Perdu series embed mother-of-pearl in layered, sanded acrylic paint. New large-scale sculptures extend ideas from Lee’s 2024 Metropolitan Museum of Art façade commission Long Tail Halo, combining bodily, mechanical, and architectural forms.

Lee Bul (b. 1964, Yeongju) lives and works in Seoul. The exhibition examines tensions between utopian modernity, technology, and collapse.
