02/01/2026 - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey
Transcript
00:00Hello there, a very good morning to you. Some of us heading back to work today will need
00:05those ice scrapers on hand to get us going first thing. Cold northerly winds coming all
00:09the way down from the Arctic are now well in play across all areas of the UK. We've
00:14also seen this frontal system just slipping its way through providing an area of rain,
00:18sleet and snow across parts of Northern Ireland, Wales and into England first thing this morning
00:22so there could be some icy stretches around as that pushes its way through. But once it
00:26does clear off there will be a decent amount of sunshine for many inland areas
00:30particularly across England and Wales so fairly fine if you want to get outside
00:33here at all. But a few further showers just drifting their way in across other
00:37coastal districts. It is though going to be feeling cold for all of us. Temperatures
00:42really struggling into low single figures for most but there'll be places in the
00:45north that might not even see much above freezing throughout today. The most
00:50frequent snow showers though over the next few days are very likely to be
00:54across northern areas of Scotland and these could turn more heavier and persistent later
00:58on today and into the overnight period. And so an amber snow warning comes into force
01:02for areas of the Highlands and the Grampians where particularly over the hills we could
01:06see 30 to 40 centimetres of snow building up. Combine that with the strong winds that
01:12we've got around as well that leads to the potential for temporary blizzard conditions
01:16at times also. So a lot of disruption is very likely and it's worth keeping up to date
01:20with local travel providers and services on the conditions of any travel routes and roads
01:25that you do plan on going on before you head out at all. Elsewhere into this evening and
01:30overnight again we'll still see a few of those wintry showers pushing their way through
01:34particularly for parts of Northern Ireland, Western Wales, southwest of England and again
01:37across the far east of England. But inland areas underneath the clear skies and starry scenes
01:42will be turning bitterly cold. A widespread frost really setting itself in and by the time we reach the
01:49early hours of Saturday morning we'll be seeing as low as potentially minus 10 degrees Celsius
01:54particularly in areas of Scotland where we do have some lying snow around but even elsewhere
01:59widely in towns and cities around minus three to minus four degrees Celsius. Bitterly cold for all
02:05of us as we do start off the weekend. Perhaps a slight change in wind direction into Saturday could
02:10bring us a few more wintry showers for eastern coast of England and another snow and ice warning
02:15comes into force here tomorrow particularly around the North York Moors a good few centimetres of snow
02:20potential here and again further snow showers for northern Scotland and other western regions but
02:25again for inland regions a lot of sunshine actually throughout the day so where you are
02:30managing to dodge those snow showers it will be a fairly fine and dry day overall but still very
02:36cold out there so if you are heading out for a Saturday walk it's very much worth having that warm coat
02:42wrapped around you. Temperatures again on the thermometer lingering around two to three degrees
02:46Celsius but with the brisk breeze that we've got around for all of us it's going to be feeling even
02:51colder than that so if we actually have a look at the feels like temperatures on the charts you'll see
02:56them more around minus three to minus five degrees Celsius so really feeling sub-freezing for most areas.
03:04These cold conditions very much something that we're going to have to get used to right throughout the
03:08weekend because these northerly winds are staying with us into Sunday as well and actually we end
03:15this forecast on a pretty much very similar picture to where we began the situation as well so a very
03:22cold few days to come for all of us but we'll have plenty more updates on all of that on our YouTube
03:27channel and across social media so do subscribe for those and we'll see you again later on. Bye-bye.
