00:10Halftime here in South Bend the Irish lead 10 to 7 over the NC State Wolfpack
00:17Everybody's nervous as a loss almost surely knocks them out
00:22Hey listen this game ain't nothing but a whole bunch of one-on-ones
00:26And that's what we got to make sure we do every coach every player has a job to do on this play
00:34And it's your job to get that job done
00:38We owe it to the people in this room. You have a job to do on that play
00:42The only thing they got is what we give them
00:45We give them the touchdown because we don't play with the proper technique. How do you stop?
00:49You just do your job with the proper technique because you're so locked in on this moment
00:54Get your job young
00:56Get your job
00:58So
01:00It's like that close to just blow out again, you know?
01:30That's a good thing, like, you can win 27, so there's so much more.
01:35Yeah.
01:36That's a team that's elevating.
01:38How do you feel physically?
01:39Good, good.
01:41Nothing, nothing.
01:42The same as the last two weeks, like, I didn't really get hit, like, hit a bunch.
01:46Yeah.
01:47I mean, I ran a little bit more, but, like, other than that, body feels great.
01:52You're getting ready for NC State now?
01:53Yeah.
01:54The difference in last year's team and this year's team, like Coach Dent said in the staff
02:03meeting yesterday, like, you guys found a way and pushed through.
02:06We got over the hump, or last year we just kind of stayed stagnant.
02:09This year you guys found a way to get it done.
02:11We know there's more out there for us.
02:14We know there's a lot more room to improve, and there's answers out there that we have
02:20to find and put them to work and elevate.
02:24We have to use that as we go into this week of preparation.
02:27This is resolved over time, right?
02:29That red line right there is what we think should happen, right?
02:33We put a little bit of work in, we should see an improvement.
02:36And then we put more improvement, improvement.
02:38A steady improvement is what we should see without question.
02:41That's what we should see, because if I don't see that, then it's not worth doing.
02:45We got another opponent ahead of us, and, you know, it'll be another great challenge.
02:49So we got to continue to prepare the right way.
02:52And if we do that, Saturdays will take care of itself.
02:57You know, going into this week for NC State, we're going to prepare just like any team.
03:16Our preparation doesn't change based on our opponent.
03:19We pride ourselves in not beating ourselves.
03:21So that's the things we're going to work on to continue to improve, and not try to make
03:25it bigger than what it is.
03:26You know, it's just another game at home, which is a huge, huge deal for us.
03:31Take a lot of pride in defending our house, defending our home at the stadium.
03:34Good work.
03:35Good work.
03:36Good work.
03:37The biggest thing for us is to not get complacent with the last two weeks.
03:40We've won three in a row, but everybody in the locker room is still hungry and ready
03:43to get after each and every week.
03:44We've got to keep improving the way we practice.
03:46You know what I mean?
03:47And I'm talking big picture.
03:49Like every play, you've got to be locked in, but you've got to mentally and physically
03:52ready to go.
03:53Saturday's coming.
03:54We understand it.
03:55But we can't achieve Team Glory right now.
03:57We've got to do the work and prepare the way that it gives us an opportunity to achieve
04:02what we want on Saturday.
04:04Everybody understand that?
04:05We've got to practice on a Tuesday, which we just finished up.
04:07We've got to do what we've got to do after practice to recover.
04:09Fuel.
04:10Okay?
04:11Sleep.
04:12Study.
04:13Nobody feels bad.
04:14That's what we chose.
04:15That's what you chose as players.
04:17That's what we chose.
04:18Nobody feels bad.
04:19But there's things you've got to do.
04:21So you've got to continue to do the things that help you be able to come out here and
04:25prepare the right way.
04:26Let's go.
04:27Get a break.
04:28Get a break.
04:29Get a break.
04:30Get a break.
04:31TDS, I'll do!
04:32I'll do!
04:33TDS!
04:34How wait how wait!
04:45Yeah!
04:47Yeah!
04:48When I was younger I wasn't really that big on football yet.
04:53As I got older I definitely became more a fan of Notre Dame.
04:59It was because my dad, Brian is a huge individual, 277.
05:05He's got arms as big as my legs.
05:08Johnson, hit and drop.
05:10Brian Young.
05:12I always knew he played football.
05:15And he is sad.
05:17You just have kids coming up to you, finding out who your dad is.
05:20And it's like, wait, your dad is blah, blah, blah, blah.
05:23Saturdays were for Notre Dame football.
05:25Notre Dame has always been a special place to me.
05:2997, Brian Young.
05:31His tackles are special.
05:34Just to be back here in this capacity as a parent,
05:38everybody adopts and makes it feel like your family.
05:44It feels like home.
05:46Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Bryant Young
05:50for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
05:53I proudly wore gold throughout my career.
05:58I'll cherish this jacket for the rest of my life.
06:01Today, for me, it's about faith, football, and family.
06:07From my pain, I found purpose.
06:08I entered the hall
06:10as a member of its 22...
06:1720, 22.
06:2022.
06:23It was Kobe's favorite number.
06:27We ran into these strange people
06:29selling lemonade in the area.
06:33Do you want some?
06:34Kobe was a great older brother.
06:37Super passionate about everything.
06:40He was the goofy guy in the room.
06:42Like, he brought a smile to all our faces.
06:45There were some moments where we butted heads,
06:47but the majority of the time,
06:48it was very, like, him telling me
06:51what I needed to be successful.
06:52I know that's, like, kind of hard to understand.
06:54Like, we're just little kids.
06:56Bryce, as a younger brother,
06:58looking up to his older brother,
06:59he respected him highly.
07:02He always wanted to kind of be around him
07:05and fit in
07:05and just kind of do what he was doing.
07:08What do you think, Jada?
07:09Fight, sit up right here.
07:10Kobe was very passionate about football.
07:13Go Kobe, go Kobe, go Kobe, go Kobe.
07:15That was his thing,
07:16and he was doing anything he could
07:18to get better every day.
07:19All right, Kobe!
07:21I think he loved the camaraderie of the sport
07:23and just the competitive nature that it had to it,
07:27and that always brought the best out of him.
07:29The first time that we realized
07:35that something was wrong with Kobe
07:37was the day that he was supposed to leave
07:39with his middle school class
07:41to go to this retreat that they did
07:43at the beginning of school year.
07:46But he was like,
07:48Dad, I got a headache.
07:50My head hurts really, really bad.
07:55And so it was hurting bad enough
07:57where we kept him back
07:58from going on this three-day retreat
08:00with his class
08:01that we took him to the pediatrician.
08:05She wanted him to get a CT scan.
08:07She called my wife and basically was like,
08:15Kobe has a mass in his brain.
08:17We need to get him admitted to the hospital
08:20to run further tests.
08:23And so we discovered that he had cancer,
08:27and that was probably the most devastating news
08:30that I had heard ever in my life.
08:32I remember they went to the doctor.
08:39They came home.
08:40I hear the car pull up,
08:41and I see Kobe jump out the car,
08:44and he's like kind of hysterical,
08:47like tears running down his cheek.
08:49My parents come in the house.
08:50They sit us all down,
08:51and they're like,
08:51yeah, Kobe has a brain tumor.
08:54No way this is real.
08:55Like I was only, what, eight or nine?
08:59But I was like, no way this is real.
09:02It's like worse than a curse word.
09:05I would rather somebody curse me out
09:07than hear the word that your kid has cancer.
09:10Because as a parent,
09:12it was one thing that I could not
09:13protect my kids from as a father,
09:17and I felt helpless.
09:20The thought of him passing away
09:21never crossed my mind.
09:23Oh, he's going to make it through this.
09:24Like, we're going to get through this.
09:25We're going to go back to normal.
09:28Kobe's initial response
09:30to the news that he had cancer
09:31was distraught.
09:33He was emotional.
09:35He was afraid.
09:36You know, the thought of him dying
09:38came up.
09:39He dealt with it.
09:41Had a day of just, you know,
09:43feeling it or two or three.
09:45And then it was like,
09:46okay, what do we got to do?
09:50When the doctor advised him
09:52not to play football again,
09:53the news of that crushed him.
09:56He cried like a baby
09:57because he couldn't play football again.
10:03Like, that probably hurt him more
10:05than actually having cancer
10:06and not being able to play football.
10:08Knowing that his dreams
10:10were taken away from him in that way.
10:12Less than two weeks post-op
10:15from having a brain surgery.
10:17He was back in school.
10:20Coach invited him to come out
10:22and be a part of the team
10:24running out of the tunnel.
10:26It was Friday Night Lights.
10:27Kobe was excited.
10:30Ladies and gentlemen,
10:31in 2014,
10:33Charlotte Christian Marcy.
10:35That one was super cool.
10:39Kobe led the team out.
10:40You just see his big smile,
10:45everybody cheering him on.
10:47And it was his moment
10:49to be back on the field
10:50in this capacity.
10:52That gave him a lot of hope.
10:54I think that lifted his spirits a lot.
10:58Kobe was a very strong individual,
11:00not only physically,
11:01but mentally.
11:02You never knew
11:03when he was having a bad day
11:04because he was always
11:05the brightest light in the room.
11:08But he could only take so much,
11:10you know?
11:12He was in remission
11:13for a couple months
11:15and then they found it again
11:16going down his spine
11:17and that's when things
11:18really took a turn
11:19for the worse.
11:22I knew how much pain
11:24he was going through
11:24every day.
11:26like he couldn't talk anymore.
11:30Like,
11:30he wasn't talking
11:31and that was very hard.
11:33But,
11:33every once in a while
11:34he would walk in
11:35and he would just smile at you
11:37and he knew
11:38he was thinking about you.
11:42We just wanted him
11:43to be comfortable
11:44and not suffer anymore
11:46because I felt like
11:50he had fought
11:51a really tough battle
11:53as a young 15-year-old kid
11:57doing the very best he could.
12:00He looked at it square in the eyes
12:02and he faced it head on
12:04and we loved on him
12:06to the very, very end,
12:08bitter end.
12:09The date, October 11th,
12:11is special to our family
12:13and it's when Kobe transitioned
12:16to heaven.
12:20That was really hard.
12:22I wasn't ever going to
12:23see him smile
12:24or hear him laugh
12:25or make me laugh again.
12:28I lost my big brother.
12:30That was very hard to cope with.
12:33Toward the end of Kobe's life,
12:36Kobe leaves a message to Bryce
12:37and he says something
12:39to the effect that he,
12:41Bryce would be able to write
12:42his own ticket
12:44and go to any college
12:45he wants to
12:46because he's a bright kid.
12:49He saw the best in Bryce.
12:51He championed Bryce.
12:54Here comes the pressure!
12:56He goes down!
12:57Bryce Young with a sack!
13:01I tell Bryce a lot.
13:03I say I could see Kobe
13:05and the big smile on his face.
13:09Kobe just loved sports.
13:11He loved Notre Dame.
13:11He was a huge Notre Dame fan
13:13and he would be cheering Bryce on.
13:17Now I have his love for the game
13:19so I've kind of taken his mission
13:22and my mission
13:22and combined it
13:23and he's really my why.
13:25He's like why I'm inspired
13:26to play football.
13:27Good afternoon and welcome to Notre Dame football.
13:46Fighting Irish winners of three straight
13:48looking to keep it rolling
13:49today against the Wolfpack
13:51of North Carolina State.
13:53First time that NC State
13:56has made the trip
13:57up to Notre Dame Stadium
13:59since 2017.
14:06Let's go to work, man.
14:07Here we are.
14:08Right?
14:13Think about this, man.
14:14We've elevated
14:15and we're at the next stage.
14:18We were just here seven days ago
14:20and we had to elevate
14:21to get to this stage.
14:22Well, we elevated.
14:26Remember our foundation.
14:28Right?
14:29Remember that feeling.
14:29Remember the pain
14:30because that's when we learn
14:31how to sacrifice.
14:34Everybody said,
14:35don't lose it.
14:36Don't lose it.
14:38Submit to the mission.
14:42Submit to the mission
14:43of Team Lauren.
14:46If we respect each other enough,
14:48we'll submit to it.
14:53Marcus Freeman
14:53has him out the tunnel
14:55and in the sixth game
14:57of the season,
14:57here come the Irish.
15:07I think our identity
15:08is the same every week
15:10and we want to start fast.
15:13We're going to be physical
15:14and then take advantage
15:16of the opportunities
15:17that are presented to us.
15:25Bailey stands in the shotgun,
15:27claps for the football
15:28and takes the snap
15:28on second and five.
15:29Looking left,
15:30now looking right.
15:31He's in trouble
15:32and he goes down.
15:34Boubacar Traore
15:35sacks him.
15:37He has just been
15:38a monster.
15:42At the end of the day,
15:43we've got to be
15:44who we say we are
15:44as a defensive front
15:46and it's only getting
15:47better every week.
15:49That line's starting
15:50to make things happen here
15:51over the last couple of weeks.
15:53Way to start.
15:54Way to start.
15:55Now the Irish
15:56go to work offensively.
15:59Carr takes the snap,
16:00looks left,
16:00now rolls right.
16:03Fires downfield,
16:04Will Baldings wide open
16:05at the NC State 40.
16:07Makes the catch
16:07turns upfield,
16:08takes it inside the 30.
16:10He's all the way down
16:10to the Wolfpack
16:1226-yard line.
16:15Five receivers
16:16open up things for us
16:17and us running backs
16:17making plays,
16:18opens up plays
16:19for our receivers.
16:20Now Carr checks
16:21the play at the line,
16:23takes the snap,
16:23looking right.
16:24Carr fires
16:25all the way
16:25across the field.
16:26Pauling makes the catch
16:27at the 13,
16:28sheds one tackle
16:28at the 10,
16:29cuts inside of the 5
16:30and he's down.
16:31Another big pick up
16:32for Will Pauling.
16:35Pistol set again
16:36with Love as the back.
16:38Our mindset going
16:39to every game
16:40offensively
16:40is just to go out there
16:42attacking the run game.
16:44Carr takes the snap,
16:45gives it to Love,
16:45puts his head down
16:46for the goal line,
16:47he's in.
16:49They'll score.
16:50Touchdown,
16:50Notre Dame!
16:52Jeremiah Love
16:53opens it up.
16:56Had a way
16:57to get it in there.
16:58He got a lot of confidence
16:59in handing the ball
17:00to Jeremiah Love
17:00at any point,
17:01any yard line
17:02on the field
17:03because you know
17:04he protects the football
17:05and he runs hard
17:06and so there's a lot
17:08of confidence built
17:08in Jeremiah Love.
17:13We came out swinging.
17:15Let's go, D!
17:17Let's go!
17:18Let's go, D!
17:20Let's go!
17:21We came aggressive.
17:22I think it was just
17:23we got too relaxed.
17:26Notre Dame trying
17:27to provide some pressure.
17:30The ball is going
17:30deep downfield
17:31with plenty of time
17:32and it's complete!
17:34And that is Terrell Anderson
17:35for the touchdown!
17:3745 yards!
17:40They did an out and up
17:42and took a shot
17:42on the young freshman
17:43and explosive plays
17:44will happen.
17:45We don't love it
17:46but they went on
17:46and scored.
17:47Whatever coaching points
17:52we have to make
17:53let's make them.
17:53We have to clean it up, man.
17:56We just become undisciplined.
17:59And then we got to refocus
18:00and win the next play.
18:01Notre Dame is going for it
18:03on fourth down and three.
18:05The ball at the eight.
18:08I think a lot comes down
18:09to conviction
18:10that we'll get it,
18:11convert it.
18:11And then analytics plays
18:14into a lot of my decision-making
18:16in those situations.
18:17And now that's two red zone trips
18:32in which they're empty today.
18:34Both phases.
18:35Let's go.
18:35Bayley takes the snap
18:38looking right
18:39here comes the pressure
18:40now spins
18:40stays on his feet
18:41trying to get away
18:42he's across the 35
18:44up to the 40
18:45taken down
18:46Marcus Freeman
18:47uses his final timeout
18:49Notre Dame's going to get
18:50the ball back
18:51and this is a big one.
18:52Final play most likely
18:53of this first half
18:55tied at seven
18:56a chance to
18:56grab some points
18:57before the break.
18:58Good snap
19:03good hold
19:04Burnett drives a low one
19:06and this kick
19:07is good.
19:12Right before halftime
19:13Notre Dame takes the lead
19:15thanks to a 48-yard field goal
19:18from Noah Burnett.
19:19And a breath of relief
19:21from Coach Freeman
19:22as it goes through the uprights.
19:24Everybody's nervous.
19:26As a loss almost
19:27surely knocks them out
19:28this game ain't nothing
19:31but a whole bunch
19:31of one-on-ones.
19:32Right?
19:33And that's what we got
19:34to make sure we do.
19:35Everybody
19:35every coach
19:36every player
19:37has a job to do
19:39on this play.
19:40And it's your job
19:42to get that job done.
19:44You have a job
19:46to do on that play.
19:48The only thing they got
19:49is what we give them.
19:50We give them the touchdown
19:51because we don't play
19:53with the proper technique.
19:54How do you stop?
19:55You just do your job
19:56with the proper technique
19:57because you're so locked
19:59in on this moment.
20:00Get your jobs done.
20:02All of us.
20:02All of us.
20:03All of us.
20:03Get it done
20:04and let's celebrate.
20:05Here we go.
20:05Let's go.
20:06Here we go.
20:07Here we go.
20:07TGS on two.
20:08One, two.
20:09TGS.
20:11My message was very clear.
20:13Don't beat Notre Dame.
20:14The only people
20:14that can beat Notre Dame
20:15is Notre Dame.
20:16We've got to eliminate
20:17some of the mistakes
20:18and the self-inflicted issues.
20:21Fourth down and two.
20:23I don't think Marcus Freeman
20:24can risk it
20:24in his own territory.
20:25Have him ready.
20:26Have him ready.
20:28Now I think
20:28Buckner's in the shotgun.
20:29Number 10's in.
20:30Buckner's in the shotgun.
20:33Takes the snap.
20:34He's going to fake
20:34the handoff.
20:35Run forward
20:35and he's got the first down
20:36up to the 41.
20:39How about that?
20:40Unbelievable execution
20:42by Notre Dame
20:43and what a moment
20:44for Tyler Buckner.
20:46Great execution.
20:48Good job.
20:49Good job.
20:49Carr is going to make
20:55a check at the line.
20:56Take the snap.
20:57Here comes the pressure.
20:58They pick it up.
20:59Carr firing.
21:00End zone.
21:01Touchdown!
21:01K.K. Smith
21:02brings it in
21:04and the Irish
21:05extend the lead.
21:0718-yard strike
21:08from Carr to Smith
21:10and some breathing room
21:11for the Irish.
21:12The biggest thing
21:25for me, you know,
21:25coming out
21:26in the second half
21:28was to play fast
21:29and once you make
21:31a decision,
21:31be 100% in that decision.
21:34Let's get Jeremiah
21:34Love going.
21:35Just 12 carries,
21:3632 yards.
21:37And if somebody's
21:38in your way,
21:39you know,
21:39hit them.
21:40Second and 10.
21:42Love's the back,
21:43gets the carry,
21:43now bounces out
21:44to the left
21:44along the far numbers.
21:45Here he goes
21:45down the far sideline
21:46over the 30,
21:47up to the 40.
21:48Best run of the day
21:48for Jeremiah Love.
21:533.45 left.
21:55In the third,
21:56Carr surveying
21:57just picking apart
21:58this defense now.
21:59That is K.K. Smith
22:00for another big gain.
22:02Nice!
22:03Execute!
22:04This is important!
22:05Carr along the near hash
22:06takes the snap,
22:08looks,
22:08throws,
22:09Pauling,
22:09catches at the two
22:10for the goal line!
22:11He's in!
22:12Yeah!
22:14Yeah!
22:16Touchdown,
22:16Notre Dame!
22:18Will Pauling
22:19is back in the end zone!
22:22Hey, protect!
22:23Let's go!
22:23Protect!
22:24Protect!
22:25Wolf at 11.
22:27Wolf back,
22:28gonna give it a shot.
22:29Bailey steps up,
22:30goes over the middle,
22:30that pass is picked off
22:32by Yvonne Shuler!
22:33Every week,
22:37we go in our keys to victory,
22:39plus two,
22:39and takeaways
22:40is always our number one.
22:42Bailey takes the snap,
22:43rolls right,
22:45here comes the pressure,
22:46everybody's getting home,
22:47now a throw,
22:48and it's pitched off!
22:49Kingston,
22:49Billy Albuasa
22:50has it at 35,
22:51down the near sideline,
22:53second interception
22:54for Notre Dame.
22:56You're seeing a defense
22:57that's improving,
22:58and the intentionality
22:59that they're putting
23:01into the work.
23:02What a play
23:03by Kingston,
23:04Billy Albuasa,
23:05right in the perfect spot,
23:06and that's where
23:06he's been all season.
23:07Come on, D!
23:08Hell yeah, D!
23:09Hell yeah, D!
23:11You know,
23:11this journey
23:12is gonna be a long one,
23:13and you can't define
23:15who you are
23:15based off one day,
23:17one game.
23:17It's the ability
23:19to put your head down,
23:20continue to work,
23:20no matter if you had
23:21a great game
23:22and gave up seven points
23:23or you gave up more.
23:26Clock hits six minutes
23:27to play.
23:27Carr claps
23:28for the football
23:29on first and ten.
23:30Looking left,
23:31has a clean pocket.
23:32Now he's gonna step up,
23:33trying to find Reardon.
23:34Oh, he goes up
23:35and brings it in
23:36on the far sideline
23:38at the two-yard line.
23:40What a throw
23:41from Carr
23:42and an incredible catch
23:43by Eli Reardon.
23:4536 yards.
23:48First and goal.
23:49Irish will hand it off.
23:50It's Love for the end zone.
23:51Love's in.
23:52Another touchdown
23:53for Jeremiah Love.
23:56Exclamation point
23:57on the day
23:58against the Wolfpack.
24:00That's Notre Dame
24:01right there.
24:02That's Notre Dame.
24:03That's how you're
24:04supposed to play.
24:05Good job.
24:06We're not satisfied
24:07with anything
24:08that's going on right now.
24:10We always want more.
24:11We want to be able
24:12to just get better
24:13every single week.
24:14They've won four straight
24:16and they hit
24:17the halfway point
24:18at four and two
24:20with all kinds
24:21of momentum
24:22as they get set
24:24for USC next week.
24:25We're still on a mission
24:28to reach our full potential
24:30and we'll do anything
24:32necessary to reach that.
24:35I just want you to think
24:36about one thing
24:37before you say this, right?
24:38The work.
24:39The work you put in
24:41all week.
24:42The work this coaching staff
24:43puts in all week
24:44to be able to say this
24:46at the end of a game.
24:47That's important, man.
24:48All right?
24:49So let's make sure
24:49we enjoy this thing.
24:50One, two, three.
24:52Here come the Irish!
24:53Yeah, man.
24:54Let's go!
25:20Welcome to the
25:22Pro Football Hall of Fame.
25:23It is my pleasure
25:24to welcome you
25:24to the formal opening
25:26of our newest exhibit,
25:28Gold Helmet to Gold Jacket.
25:30It is our way
25:31of showing appreciation
25:33to the 14 members
25:35of the Fighting Irish Football
25:37alumni who are enshrined
25:38here in Canton.
25:40No institution
25:42has sent more players
25:43into professional football.
25:46No institution
25:47has sent more individuals
25:49into enshrinement
25:50in Canton, Ohio,
25:52the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
25:54And no institution
25:55can show a direct thread
25:57from the beginning
25:58of professional football
25:59in 1920
26:00and our inaugural class
26:03in 1963
26:04up through the present day
26:06like the University
26:07of Notre Dame.
26:10Notre Dame,
26:11throughout the decades,
26:12even though they haven't won
26:13a national championship
26:14since 1988,
26:15is still able
26:16to put the best players
26:18on the field
26:19and get players
26:20through the NFL.
26:22It's a lineage,
26:23it's a brotherhood,
26:23it's a family,
26:24and it shows that
26:25spanning the course
26:26of multiple decades,
26:28Notre Dame
26:29has been a constant.
26:32I want to thank Dave Casper
26:34for coming here,
26:34one of the 14
26:35that you learn
26:36a little bit more about
26:37from this exhibit.
26:39Dave was an offensive lineman
26:41to start his career
26:42at the University of Notre Dame,
26:44moved to tight end
26:45for the 1973 season
26:47and responded immediately
26:48by becoming
26:49a collegiate All-American.
26:51Notre Dame won
26:52the national championship
26:53that season.
26:55Thank you, Dave,
26:55for being here.
26:56Member of the class
26:57of 2002,
26:58Dave Casper.
27:00applause
27:01We started in 1887.
27:12We've been here together
27:13an awful lot
27:14in an awful long time,
27:16and all I can tell you
27:17is I'm so very fortunate
27:20to be part of this
27:21Notre Dame group
27:22because we know
27:23how to get along
27:24with each other,
27:24we love each other.
27:25That is the one,
27:27I think, truth
27:28about college football.
27:29At the end of the day,
27:31Notre Dame's going
27:31to be there.
27:32Notre Dame
27:33and Southern Cal,
27:34the most spectacular
27:35of all the intersectional series
27:37in the realm
27:38of collegiate football.
27:40So many great rivals,
27:41but nobody comes to mind more,
27:43and I love to see
27:44the Irish beat as USC,
27:46so could you share
27:47maybe any memorable stories
27:48about the atmosphere?
27:49The Trojan horse
27:50is coming onto the field.
27:52Notre Dame crushes USC,
27:5330 to nothing.
27:56They're a great team.
27:57You know, you can't have
27:58a great rivalry
27:59without a great rival.
28:00So I don't dislike Southern Cal
28:03because they've given us
28:04so many opportunities
28:05to have a great rivalry,
28:06and I actually hope
28:07they generally win.
28:08I don't want them to lose
28:09to a crummy team.
28:10I just want them
28:11to lose to us.
28:18USC and Notre Dame
28:19is one of the biggest
28:20national rivalries
28:21in college football.
28:22The amount of history
28:24and success
28:25that both of these teams
28:26have is part of the reason
28:28it means so much
28:29to beat each other.
28:31Southern Cal-Notre Dame
28:32rivalry throughout the years
28:34has just been
28:34an unbelievable football game.
28:36I think it's up on top
28:37of all the rivalries
28:38in the country,
28:39and, you know,
28:40of course,
28:41year in and year out,
28:41it's a hard-ending contest,
28:42and it's just a great
28:43football game.
28:44You've had Heisman Trophy campaigns,
28:51national championship hopes.
28:52You've had these things
28:53dashed in that game.
28:56But ultimately,
28:57these are programs
28:58that are iconic.
28:59They're blue bloods.
29:01Everyone knows them.
29:02So even if you're not
29:03a fan of either
29:04of these teams,
29:05you've got strong feelings
29:06about USC or Notre Dame.
29:08Probably the moment
29:09that it hit me harder
29:11than any time
29:12was actually
29:14on a Friday night
29:15pep rally.
29:19Call this one
29:20the game of the millennium.
29:21Number nine, Notre Dame,
29:22against number one, USC.
29:30And they decided
29:31that they were going
29:32to have a pep rally
29:33not in the Joy Center
29:35where they normally did,
29:37but they were going
29:37to have it in the stadium.
29:39I go,
29:45you have got to be kidding me.
29:48We're in front of 45,000
29:49in a Friday night
29:50to get ready
29:51for the biggest game
29:52of the season
29:52between, at this point,
29:54Notre Dame and USC.
29:55In the 10 years
29:56I've been on this show,
29:56I've never seen buildup
29:58and anticipation
29:59for a game like this.
30:01It was nuts.
30:02For a pep rally?
30:04I remember Rudy
30:07being out there.
30:09Rudy, Louis, Lee!
30:14People were absolutely
30:16off the chain.
30:17They were nuts.
30:18You would have thought
30:18the game was being played.
30:26People were that fired up
30:27about the possibility
30:28that maybe Notre Dame football
30:30is back.
30:32The buildup has been tremendous
30:33and the moment is here.
30:34So just the last couple
30:37of minutes of that game
30:38you could write
30:39a book about.
30:41Quinn,
30:41the short drop,
30:42he's going to take it.
30:43Quinn,
30:43Brady Quinn,
30:44stopped,
30:46touchdown!
30:49Brady Quinn leads
30:50Notre Dame down the field,
30:52but then USC faced
30:54a fourth and long.
30:55Leinert on fourth down
30:56in the pocket,
30:57goes down the sideline!
30:59It's caught!
31:01Jarrett!
31:02Just stopped!
31:03And got all the way down
31:06inside the Notre Dame
31:0710-yard line.
31:09Matt Leinert
31:10rolling to his left.
31:12He's going to tuck it under.
31:13He is!
31:16Stopped short.
31:18The clock's still running.
31:20Can you get out of bounds?
31:21Time run down.
31:22The clock says zero.
31:23Notre Dame has won.
31:29And the students
31:31stormed the field.
31:33And it was like,
31:34holy cow,
31:35they beat this
31:36invincible USC team.
31:39Ball comes out.
31:40Ball's out.
31:41Ball comes out.
31:42So that,
31:42the clock should have stopped.
31:43The game wasn't over,
31:45and they had to get
31:46all the students
31:47back off the field.
31:50Matt Leinert
31:51was lined up,
31:52and Reggie Bush
31:53was in the backfield.
31:56Leinert
31:56going to try to sneak it ahead.
31:58He got in.
32:00Touchdown,
32:01SC!
32:02Reggie Bush
32:03helps push him
32:04into the end zone
32:05for the touchdown.
32:06Now, back then,
32:08that was illegal.
32:09You weren't allowed
32:09to push the runner.
32:10Now everybody does it.
32:11People thought that
32:13that should have been
32:14a penalty,
32:15that that shouldn't have
32:16counted.
32:17I mean,
32:18one of the best games
32:18I've ever seen in my life.
32:21One thing for sure,
32:22we have
32:23awakened the echoes today.
32:26We asked you
32:37in the summer
32:38about the state
32:38of the series
32:39with USC,
32:40so I'll just ask you again
32:41since it's game week.
32:43What are your thoughts
32:44on kind of where
32:44that is right now?
32:48My opinion is very clear.
32:49Let's continue this thing.
32:50The head coach
32:53of this football program
32:54desires to continue
32:56this rivalry.
32:58It's not just because
33:00I'm at Notre Dame.
33:03The rivalry between
33:04Notre Dame and USC
33:05is a great rivalry.
33:08One of the best,
33:08and I think it's great
33:09for college football
33:10and the two institutions
33:12to continue this rivalry.
33:15What a game
33:16setting up
33:17in South Bend, Indiana.
33:19This Saturday night,
33:20USC-Notre Dame.
33:21How big is this?
33:23College football
33:24playoff fate.
33:25That's what's on the line.
33:27And if this is the last time
33:29these two play
33:30in Notre Dame Stadium,
33:31I'm going to riot.
33:33This is the last game
33:35under contract.
33:36At Notre Dame,
33:37there's one more next year
33:39in Los Angeles,
33:41and then there is no contract.
33:43The future of the USC-Notre Dame
33:45rivalry is uncertain.
33:48Notre Dame wants
33:49to challenge itself.
33:50It's a rapid schedule,
33:50wants to play rivals,
33:52and USC seems more hesitant
33:55about moving this forward,
33:57not knowing what the college football
33:58playoff format looks like,
34:00dealing with all
34:01of the additional travel
34:02and new opponents
34:03that USC has
34:04as a member of the Big Ten.
34:06I think at the end of the day,
34:08strap it up and go play,
34:09and give fans
34:10the best matchups
34:12where the best teams
34:13are playing each other consistently.
34:15I want those teams
34:16to keep playing,
34:17because a great
34:18transcontinental rivalry
34:20as Notre Dame
34:21and USC have,
34:23that's pretty rare
34:24in college football.
34:24Here we go!
34:26Considering the backdrop
34:27of maybe this rivalry
34:28isn't going to continue...
34:30Ready, ready?
34:31It's going to be good this year.
34:33It's going to be spicy.
34:33Ready, good?
34:35Go, St. Brown!
34:38Southern Cal.
34:40Here they come.
34:40It's different.
34:44You know it's different.
34:49The crowd's going to have
34:51a little more juice to it.
34:54This is a long storied history.
34:57And if you're a young guy
34:58sitting in the back,
35:00the guys that are in the front here
35:01that have made a name
35:03for themselves in this program
35:04and the people
35:05that have played before you,
35:07some of that has come
35:08from playing in this game.
35:09and doing well in this game
35:12and the legends
35:13for you guys in the front
35:14of Notre Dame
35:15that people don't forget them ever.
35:18They don't forget who they are.
35:19They don't forget their name.
35:21They don't forget
35:22the plays they made.
35:24A lot of it has to do
35:25with what happens in this game.
35:31What a privilege.
35:32What a privilege
35:33to be challenged by a life
35:35you created on purpose.
35:37This is what you asked for.
35:42And now you got it.
35:44What are you going to do with it?
35:46Take it for granted?
35:48Or are you going to dig in?
35:50Are we going to the next level?
35:54Are we continuing to climb?
35:55Are we continuing to improve?
35:57What we settled for last week
36:06ain't good enough anymore
36:11because we've already
36:13passed that level.
36:16It's time to raise the ball.
36:19Welcome to Notre Dame football.
36:21Tonight, 13th ranked Notre Dame
36:23and 20th ranked Southern Cal
36:25at Notre Dame Stadium.
36:27And as is so often the case
36:29in this nearly century-old rivalry,
36:32the stakes are incredibly high.
36:34For Notre Dame,
36:34the margin for error is gone.
36:36We had known
36:39it was going to be
36:40an electric environment,
36:41big rivalry game.
36:43We don't like them.
36:44They don't like us.
36:46Maiava claps for the football
36:47and looks to throw
36:48to the far side of the field.
36:50Lane makes the catch
36:50and sheds one tackle
36:51at midfield
36:52all the way into Irish territory.
36:53That's 17 more
36:54through the air
36:55for the Trojans.
36:56They get on the ball quickly.
36:57There's some miscommunication
36:58in the secondary.
36:59Oh, Hines is wide open
37:00down the near side of the field,
37:01makes the catch,
37:02the 20,
37:03and he's out of bounds.
37:03Christian Gray
37:04was all the way
37:05on the far side of the field
37:06and he couldn't get back in time.
37:08Come on, Christian, come on.
37:10Going into the game,
37:11we knew their offensive scheme
37:12mind and we knew
37:13it was going to come down
37:14to defense
37:15and we had to win the game.
37:17Maiava in the shotgun
37:18along the near hash,
37:19takes the snap,
37:20looks right,
37:21pumps, throws, end zone.
37:22McCree goes up
37:23in the back right corner
37:25against Shuler
37:26and it's a touchdown.
37:28USC strikes first.
37:31Pretty impressive opening drive
37:33for the Trojans
37:33to begin the game.
37:34We're good, we're good,
37:35we're good, we're good.
37:37Let's go, keep swinging.
37:39Yeah, we knew going into the game
37:41it was going to be
37:41a great challenge.
37:42One of the top offenses
37:43in the country.
37:45Two receivers
37:46to the far side of the field
37:47for CJ Carr
37:49who claps for it
37:49along the near hash
37:50and gives it to Jeremiah Love,
37:51has a hole
37:52and here he goes
37:52across the 30,
37:53now he's out to midfield,
37:54hits the Jets at the 40,
37:55down the near sideline
37:56to the 30,
37:57across the 20,
37:58all the way down to the 10.
38:00What a run
38:01by Jeremiah Love,
38:0364 yards.
38:08We want to go in every week
38:09being able to run the ball
38:10and control the line of scrimmage
38:12and so
38:12him starting off the game
38:14with that big run
38:15and breaking free
38:16was huge for our team
38:17just to set the standard
38:19of how we wanted
38:20to kind of roll
38:21into that game.
38:21Most surprising thing
38:23was that Kamari Ramsey,
38:24the safety,
38:24was able to actually
38:25track him down in space.
38:26Usually you get Jeremiah Love
38:27in a foot race.
38:29He's not losing.
38:30Irish trail 7-0.
38:31It's their first offensive drive.
38:33Pistol set.
38:33Love, another carry.
38:34Sheds one tackle.
38:35At the 10.
38:35Oh, here he goes.
38:36Across the 5.
38:38He's in.
38:39Touchdown.
38:40Jeremiah Love
38:41starts the game
38:42with a bang.
38:46Not a way to go, baby.
38:48Each week, you know,
38:49we want to start fast.
38:51Offensively,
38:52drive the ball down
38:53and score
38:53was a really great way
38:55to start that game.
39:00All right, way to go forward.
39:03Carl start the shotgun
39:04and give it to Jadarian Price.
39:06Up the middle,
39:06has a hole.
39:07He's across midfield.
39:07Now he's on the move.
39:08Over the 40.
39:09Up to the 30.
39:10Great run by Jadarian Price
39:12to open the drive.
39:17Pistol set.
39:18Fresh set.
39:19And it's Price
39:20getting to carry.
39:20running left.
39:21Angling to the far post
39:22for the end zone.
39:23He's in.
39:24Touchdown.
39:27Jadarian Price is in.
39:29And the Irish take the lead.
39:3216-yard touchdown.
39:34And Notre Dame's on top.
39:3613-10.
39:38Hey, all day.
39:39All day.
39:39All day.
39:40All day.
39:42Good job, J.D.
39:44Second down and four.
39:45Carr takes the snap.
39:47Hands it to Love.
39:48Gaping hole.
39:50Up the middle.
39:51Across midfield.
39:51Stays on his feet.
39:52Lowers the shoulder at the USC 40.
39:54Drags defenders.
39:56Inside the 35.
39:57Down to the 33.
39:59He is so fun to watch.
40:0027 yards for Love.
40:03That offensive line is just manhandling.
40:06Billy Shrout again.
40:07The left guard just caving down the defensive line.
40:11First and 10.
40:12Love's back in the game.
40:13Gets the carry.
40:13Gets to the outside.
40:14Far hash.
40:14Turns up field.
40:15Inside the 10.
40:16Throws a stiff arm at the 5.
40:17And he's all the way down to the 3-yard line.
40:2017 more for Love.
40:23He's up beyond 1.30 in the game already.
40:26And Billy Shrout is down, grabbing his knee.
40:29Oh, no.
40:29Yeah.
40:32He's in a lot of pain.
40:34Shrout, the captain, left guard.
40:36Time out for an offensive player and great leader on this team.
40:39Thanks, Dan.
40:47Breathe, boy.
40:48Breathe.
40:49Breathe.
40:50Help me.
40:51I'm going to get off.
40:56Breathe.
40:56Breathe.
40:57There you go.
40:57There you go.
41:02And it's third down and goal from the 2-yard line.
41:05Love is the back.
41:06They're all bunched tight to the formation.
41:08Carr's in the shotgun.
41:09Motion's Raritan.
41:10Gives it.
41:11No.
41:11Fakes it.
41:12Love rolls left.
41:13Now he's in trouble.
41:14Carr rolling right.
41:15He's at the 10.
41:15Scrambling.
41:16Back to the 20.
41:17Carr keeping the play alive.
41:19Looking downfield.
41:20Heaves it.
41:20Oh, it's picked off.
41:22A disastrous play in the red zone for Notre Dame.
41:25You can't do it.
41:27You can't do that to your team.
41:28You can't do that to the team.
41:29You can't do that to your team.
41:31Can't do it.
41:33Just made a poor decision throwing the ball.
41:35Next time we get it, you know, know where we are,
41:38know we have points, and throw the ball away.
41:41Well, there's a lot to digest in that first half.
41:44But one thing is for sure, that feels the way it used to look.
41:47That is Notre Dame-USC.
41:48It really does.
41:49And it feels like USC has been out playing Notre Dame.
41:51But Notre Dame's winning by a point.
41:53Play a clean second half, and it should be a good ending for you.
41:56Rain begins to fall even harder here as the second half begins.
42:14If you don't say anything about anything else, just be you.
42:17That's why you're here.
42:19That's what makes you special.
42:22Second play of this drive.
42:24This time Lung gets the carry running left over tackle.
42:27Has some space across the 40.
42:28Now getting to the edge along the numbers over McField.
42:3116 yards on that carry for Lung.
42:32I thought the weather helped us, to be honest with you.
42:35I thought we could control the line of scrimmage throughout the whole game.
42:38Third down and seven suddenly for Notre Dame there.
42:410 for 5 on third down tonight.
42:43Carr takes the snap.
42:45Hands it to Love.
42:45Stutter steps in the hole.
42:46Breaks a tackle up to the 10.
42:48Stays on his feet.
42:49Got the first down.
42:50Another impressive run from Jeremiah Love.
42:53Gets 10 yards and sets up first and goal.
42:58Carr claps the football.
43:00Looks over the middle for Pauling at the goal line.
43:02He caught it.
43:04Touchdown, Notre Dame.
43:06They open the second half with a score.
43:09Boy, that's how you come out in the third quarter with the ball.
43:1275 yards on 13 plays.
43:15They take nearly half of the third quarter block off the board.
43:19Let's go.
43:21Let's go.
43:22Let's go.
43:23That's the old.
43:23Yes, sir.
43:24Yes, sir.
43:25Good job, Steve.
43:26Yeah, baby.
43:27There's a huge drive and take off all that clock.
43:30You get points and then it was great coming out of half and putting points on the board like that.
43:37Five minutes and 25 seconds left in the third quarter between the Irish and the Trojans.
43:42And Notre Dame leads 21-16 in a rainy South Bend at Notre Dame Stadium.
43:47They really need to hold USC out of the end zone here.
43:52They're picking on Christian Gray.
43:54They know that Notre Dame plays a lot of man and they're going to find their spots.
43:59Those are some of the top guys in the country.
44:01We knew that, you know, the game plan was to get the ball to them.
44:05And we knew defensively, like, we were going to have to be on our eight game, all game to have a chance to win.
44:12Shot done for Maiavo on second and four.
44:14Pumps now looking downfield.
44:15Has Lane with a step at the 25 and he caught it.
44:18At the 20, breaks a tackle and he's gone.
44:20Inside the 10, 59 yards.
44:24Jacoby Lane gives the Trojans the lead.
44:27Well, they've had a game plan going in.
44:29They're going to go on Christian Gray.
44:30I was just trying to play to my leverage and then, you know, unfortunately he just, you know, got back over the top, ran a double move route.
44:40I just remember I was just really trying my hardest just to run.
44:45We saw this exact thing last year.
44:46Christian Gray just got beat by Jacoby Lane.
44:49Nobody feels bad.
44:50You either step up to a challenge, right, or you get your ass replaced.
44:54Step your ass up.
44:55The conversation I had with Freeman was like, he told me, when are you going to challenge?
45:00You got to do your job, right?
45:02And if you're going to be out there, there's an expectation that you get your job done.
45:06And so he understands that.
45:09We're not going to baby you.
45:09We're not going to sugarcoat it.
45:11You've got to find a way to play through it right now.
45:13They got to move on.
45:15They just took the lead and had the momentum.
45:18We were down.
45:18We needed a spark.
45:25Price might get his hands on it here.
45:26Fields a yard deep in his end zone.
45:28Bringing it back right to left.
45:30Breaks one tackle at the 15.
45:32Gets to the outside.
45:33Down the far sideline.
45:33Over the 30.
45:34Cuts back inside of the 40.
45:36Across midfield.
45:37Here goes Price.
45:38Hits the afterburners.
45:3930, 20, 10.
45:41To the house.
45:43100-yard touchdown return.
45:47Jadarian Price.
45:48You didn't know when that ball was being kicked off, that would be the result.
45:52But anytime he gets the ball in his hands, we got a chance to take the ball all the way.
45:59That's what he did.
45:59Credit to the 10 other guys that got their job done blocking.
46:06Yeah, the kickoff was a game changer.
46:09Warming up on the sideline, getting ready to go.
46:11And he breaks one off and does what he does.
46:14We've seen that before.
46:19In Notre Dame Stadium, we've seen that before.
46:21From the one-yard line is Jadarian Price.
46:23Jadarian Price, 10, 15, 20.
46:25Cut back to the middle.
46:26Uh-oh.
46:2730.
46:27Here he goes.
46:2840.
46:29Far side of the field.
46:2950.
46:30Far numbers.
46:3140.
46:3130.
46:32It's a foot race.
46:3320, 10.
46:34And he will win.
46:36Yes!
46:37Touchdown, Irish.
46:3999 yards.
46:41Jadarian Price.
46:42Oh, you think they've earned their lesson yet.
46:46Do not kick it to Jadarian Price.
46:51A ton of football left.
46:52Goodness.
46:53What a fun game between these two teams.
46:57Doesn't get any better than this.
46:58I just had to prove something out there.
47:12I was just really just in my head, just like, all right, bro.
47:15It's time to go.
47:16It's time to go.
47:17You got to push through this.
47:17You got to go.
47:21Maiava on first and 10.
47:22Drops.
47:23Steps up.
47:24Throws.
47:24And it's intercepted!
47:26Taken away by the Irish at midfield!
47:28Christian Gray, what do you know?
47:31Bounces back again and gets the pick.
47:34One too many times.
47:35One too many times.
47:37And he ran up to me and it was almost like a smile, like,
47:40you challenged me, challenge accepted.
47:42And I'm so proud of him.
47:44One too many times!
47:45One too many times!
47:46One too many times!
47:48I love it!
47:49I love it!
47:50I love it!
47:53I was like, I'm always going to be here.
47:56You'll ever tell me that I suck like that.
47:58Like, I was just saying so much.
48:02Wow!
48:05There's something so admirable about the way Christian Gray plays.
48:09You've got to have a short memory when you're a cornerback.
48:12Yeah, I said, this is what we do, you know.
48:14Like, this is how we play.
48:16This is our style of football and we're not done.
48:18Lane motions.
48:20Well, they flip it to Lemon.
48:21He's rolling right.
48:23Has the option to throw.
48:24He wants to throw.
48:25He won't get it away.
48:26Schuller!
48:27Poked it free!
48:28Ball's loose!
48:29The Irish have it!
48:30Kingston Billy Albuasa!
48:33Collects the rock and Notre Dame takes it away!
48:37USC tried to get cute.
48:39Paid the price for it.
48:40Just that whole sequence was huge for the offense, for the defense, for special teams.
48:46It kind of set up an eventual victory.
48:49Carr takes the snap.
48:50He'll keep it again.
48:51Quarterback draw.
48:52Carson!
48:53Touchdown!
48:54Yeah!
48:56Notre Dame extends the lead to two scores.
49:01With tradition comes great responsibility.
49:03And I feel like it was our responsibility to, you know, make the plays and come up on top
49:08of our rivalry.
49:10Notre Dame, in the 96th meeting against the Trojans, comes away with a victory.
49:17Another iconic win for the Irish at home against USC.
49:23You know, you grow up and you hear about the big rivalries of college football.
49:28To be a part of it for the first time and collect your first win in it, you know,
49:32stamp this team's mark on that rivalry was awesome.
49:42We've had some momentum, but we needed this type of victory over this challenging opponent
49:48to continue to move forward with this journey in the direction that we all aspire to be.
49:54Everybody wants success, but nobody talks about the struggle, man.
49:57There was a struggle.
49:58But if you embrace that thing, the feeling of victory is so much greater, man.
50:01And I'm proud as hell of you, man.
50:03Here come the Irish!
50:04Here come the Irish!
50:05Here come the Irish!
50:06Here come the Irish!
50:07Here come the Irish!
50:08Here come the Irish!
50:09Here come the Irish!
50:10Here come the Irish!
50:11Here come the Irish!
50:12Here come the Irish!
50:13Here come the Irish!
50:14Here come the Irish!
50:15Here come the Irish!
50:16Here come the Irish!
50:17Here come the Irish!
50:18Here come the Irish!
50:19Here come the Irish!
50:20Here come the Irish!
50:21Here come the Irish!
50:22Here come the Irish!
50:23Here come the Irish!
50:24Here come the Irish!
50:25Here come the Irish!
50:26Here come the Irish!
50:27Here come the Irish!
50:28Here come the Irish!
50:29Here come the Irish!
50:30Here come the Irish!
