00:00Good morning. It's Monday, December 29th, and that means two things.
00:17It is possible to commit no errors and still fail. That is not weakness. That is life.
00:25You know who said that? Beyonce. You know who she was quoting? Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
00:34But let's get into the news, brought to you by Keystone Technologies and their exit signs.
00:39These also come with emergency units. They have what you need. If you need red letters,
00:43because that's your local ordinance, that's great. If someone's following the ISO standard,
00:47they have green letters. You got white houses, black houses, edge lit if you need it.
00:51They have different styles, different lumen outputs. They've got combo kits.
00:57All of these are backed by Keystone's power supplies for guaranteed performance. That's
01:01keystonetech.com or the link in the description. Let's do the news because Halco has bought Topaz
01:08from Southwire. No details on price. The production price index for lighting is high compared to other
01:17industries. Specifically, the index is up 30% over the past five years. People don't pay inflation.
01:25They don't pay tariffs. They pay prices. And we're seeing prices right here.
01:32Speaking of tariffs, though, the U.S. has delayed their planned semiconductor tariff on China until
01:382027, and India and New Zealand have signed a Free Trade Act. The SPEED Act has passed the U.S.
01:46House of Representatives. This new permitting bill will erode NEPA protections in order to accelerate
01:53permitting processes for exterior projects. Canada Post has finalized their contract. This
02:00five-year deal has been tentatively secured. DAVCO, a lighting contractor in South Florida,
02:06is celebrating their 40th anniversary. Congrats to them. Lighting from the Pulse nightclub in Orlando
02:13has been saved ahead of the club's demolition. Not for any, like, memorial reason. The city's
02:20probably going to resell it for reuse. It's just pretty good nightclub lighting. New construction
02:26projects are down 20%. The hardest hit are megaprojects. And as interprovincial trade barriers
02:34fall in Canada, trucking rules aren't really keeping up because provincial rules often double
02:40up or overlap or conflict with the federal ones. And we're going to have to have a big trucking
02:44conference to settle that, I guess. In legal briefs, a federal court has ordered lighting controls in
02:51ICE concentration camps, specifically to dim the lights during evening hours so that detainees can
02:58sleep. Currently, ICE is not complying in their San Francisco facility. In events and webinars, we have
03:04updates from David Schiller on five different lighting events next year. In IoT news, four-fifths of homes have
03:12at least one smart device. That is according to a one-pole survey. Samsung SmartThings has updated to
03:20matter 1.5, which includes new tools for cameras and doorbells. The Nest camera will have AI facial
03:27recognition. Also, they'll track your pets for you. And the ONCE Foundation has certified 13 Italian
03:35smart cities. That's Alessandria, Bergamo, Bolzano, Brescia, Genoa, Milano, Turino, Trento,
03:41Florenzi, Montieri, Pisa, Napoli, and Lecce. Apologies for that accent. I didn't plan on doing that. I just
03:49slid in there. Third one. Third one caught me, I think. On the dark side of things, it's just science,
03:56folks. Longer nights just make us weird. It's how we cope. Entomologists may have to stop using
04:04light traps for their surveys as light pollution gets even brighter. Dark Sky International condemns
04:10Reflect Orbital. Reflect Orbital is, of course, the plan to put mirrors in space so that we can have light
04:17at night for solar power or growing. The U.S. Army or the U.S. Air Force almost did that during NAM,
04:26actually. Hawaii's Dark Night Skies Protection Advisory Committee has published a new report
04:32on the need for more lighting controls in the state. We have new fatigue models for 9-1-1 dispatch staff.
04:39Eating late is bad for stress, blood sugar, and sodium levels in humans. Restoring Darkness and the
04:46Darkness News Update are on indefinite hiatus going forward. Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia, is expanding its
04:54existing Dark Sky Park. Dark Sky International recognizes Snow Canyon State Park, Utah, as an urban
05:00night sky place. Black Mesa State Park, Oklahoma has been recognized as a dark sky park. I have video of
05:09how bright a metadata center in Indiana really is. And that nativity light show from Satellite Beach,
05:16that did find a new home one beach over for the holidays, just so you know. In horticultural news,
05:23farms in Kuwait are set to sell their first harvest. Greenhouse sales at Universal Fabricating
05:29celebrates their 150th acre of facility. And we have a new Leafy Greens facility turning on the lights in
05:37Slovenia. In recommended reading, all these links on Nailed.org, Energy Star still matters. Smart tech for
05:45workplace engagement. Shades in smart, sustainable buildings. We have security projects for resale value.
05:52The Manitoba Electrical Museum has a display of holiday lighting throughout the ages. How to stop
05:58leaving your lights on all night and why you should do it. Optimizing daylighting. Solving dimmer
06:04incompatibility at the switch level. We have what to know about HVAC integration into Bluetooth NLCs.
06:11And we have a meeting of the minds that actually decode the tariff executive orders. In local news,
06:18we have new rebates for small businesses in Manitoba. Three billion for road lighting in
06:23Snohomish County, Washington. We have lighting in Louisville, Kentucky cutting violence. We also
06:29have new laws for copper theft in Alberta. Stockbridge, Massachusetts has been named a
06:34climate leader community. We have new security lighting in Pendleton, Oregon. We have new energy
06:39grants and loans in Bracebridge, Ontario. Rock Springs, Wyoming is planning new lighting for
06:45pedestrian safety. Alaska is cutting spending in Anchorage by 19 million. We have new LED street
06:52lights going up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Cooperstown, New York has closed their libraries
06:58for renovations. We have new grants for Putnam, New York libraries to do the same. And we have in
07:04Maine, Booth Bay, Maine, a half million dollar LED retrofit going to schools. Durham, North Carolina is
07:12updating their tennis courts to LED. We have LEDs going in the Bridgeville, Pennsylvania baseball
07:18field. And Mammoth Solar donated $10,000 to light Meddareville, Indiana little leagues, uh, fields.
07:27Internationally, Clear Blue Tech is beginning distribution for smart cities in four African
07:32nations. Argentina opens its first solar highway. Essex County is ending energy austerity on the streets
07:40for the holidays. Yorkshire Lighting Display raises money for charities. We have new lighting for
07:45safety going ahead in Amsterdam. And Signify has opened three smart hubs in Bangalore.
07:52In people news, we have promotions for the at the director level at the IES and AES. Matthew Brady is
07:59now the CRO at Ubiquia. Sean Good is now the director of architectural lighting at Barton. Scott Jansen has been
08:06named a regional president at Sonpar. We have new promotions at Sonpar as well as you know. We also
08:11have new leadership at Southwire. Uh, also Scott Wachter doesn't work for Nailed anymore.
08:17As of the 31st, I'm done. I want to thank you for, you know, enjoying what I've put out or if you,
08:26you know, worked at, or if you took LS1 in the past five years, thank you for that. If you took
08:31LS Evolve, thank you for that. I want to thank all of the sponsors I've had over the past six years
08:36and, oh, so many directors on the board. Um, you know, really great guys. I couldn't name them all,
08:42but special shout outs to Corey Schneider, uh, Nafuse, uh, Devin Wall, uh, also, um, uh, Alan
08:49Karen, Alan Karen. And of course the management team, that's Mike, that's Greg, that's Aaron, that's
08:54Pat, and that's, uh, Scott Griffin. Thank you all for that. I should, I should end it here. I should cut
08:59it off here, but I do have to tell you that you can build a tiny little windmill lamp that uses
09:05filaments on, on the actual blades of the windmill. It's really cute. It's nice. I might make it and
09:10then make a little matchstick, uh, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to go with it. You can make an LED
09:17hopscotch board for when you're inside. And also always remember that you can test your diodes
09:23with a hot dog because there's just so much salt in them. They're conductive.
09:27Anyway, I've been Scott Wachter. I want to thank you for your time, your attention. Um,
09:33have a happy new year. I couldn't decide what song to go out on, so I'm going to do a double
09:38spin. Enjoy that. Take care of yourselves.
09:41Why would you worry?
09:47There's so much here to do, oh yeah.
09:54Why would you worry now?
09:57Oh, no.
10:00Nothing chasing you.
10:02Oh, you will be mine.
10:12Yes, I will while you're sleeping.
10:14Yeah.
10:18For the people who don't cry.
10:20I won't waste so much this time for mine.
10:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:30Yeah, yeah.
10:32Why don't you listen
10:55When I hold on to me
11:01Would you believe in me
11:07Were you satisfied with the things you see
11:14Oh, you will be mine
11:18Oh, I put while you're sleeping
11:25Yes, I know
11:28The people who don't cry
11:35Won't face the pressure sound of mine
11:39Yeah, yeah, yeah

13:47The hard way
14:09I had to do it on the hard way
14:15The hard way
14:19I had to do it on the hard way
14:25While other folks been working by the light of day
14:32Building homes and families
14:35Collecting steady pay
14:38I've been out here with the ones
14:40Whose hearts will always break
14:43Picking up bad habits
14:45That a weck I couldn't shave
14:48Don't make no difference
14:50What nobody say
14:53I never was much good at listening anyway
14:58The hard way
15:04I had to do it on the hard way
15:09The hard way
15:14I had to do it on the hard way
15:19Now people like to tell me
15:25There's no such thing as mistakes
15:27Eventually I'll see a path
15:30As long as that may take
15:32As long as that may take
15:33And though all roads get rocky
15:35They will lead to heaven's gate
15:37As like my car broke down
15:39When I took a shortcut
15:40To that fiery lane
15:42Don't make no difference
15:45What nobody say
15:47As long as I keep moving
15:49If I keep moving
15:50I will make it there someday
