hi there i'm recording this on november 26th 2025 and that means two things if you got something to
00:10
be thankful for great if you don't make it it's also time for the darkness news update brought
00:18
to you by the national association of innovative lighting distributors and their soon to launch
00:25
a long-awaited darkness restaurant darkness restoration one training program this is first
00:32
in class first in kind education about light pollution restoring darkness night conservation
00:37
whatever jargon we're supposed to be using for it now for lighting professionals this will be
00:44
again a series of short modules that will enable people to begin work in reducing light pollution
00:53
and improving the nighttime environment overall and i gotta start by saying that i got to go to
01:01
the sea turtle conservancy's annual workshop in in gainesville florida last week and i was really
01:09
worried about going as a speaker i'm not necessarily great in front of a public audience i'm also not
01:14
really great working a powerpoint presentation but everyone there made me feel so welcome and
01:20
so appreciated and i was so glad to be able to present a couple of ideas to them and i was also
01:26
tremendously glad to hear from all the other speakers i learned so much just about flip-flops on the beach
01:34
work on conserving turtles i learned about how people change minds i learned about policy i learned about
01:41
repopulating plant life in dunes that was fun i don't know if i'm ever gonna have to do that but i'm glad
01:47
i learned it and i had a great time and i want to be again i have to publicly express my gratitude
01:53
to them for doing this the news starts off with the international commission of on illumination's
02:02
new position statement on obtrusive light and light pollution first edition uh this is ps
02:09
003 2025 this is a new ongoing document that focusing that focuses on achieving balance between the benefits
02:19
of nighttime lighting and the need to minimize its adverse effects this document uh summarizes the
02:27
current state of knowledge outlines best practices for mitigating obtrusive light and identifies the key
02:33
areas for further research to guide responsible lighting design and that's freaking great i gotta say
02:42
that's all i can say about that congratulations to the cie for publishing that and i hope the work on that
02:48
continues going forward we have a new study from cranfield university studying 86 locations
02:55
that found that whole ecosystems actually have metabolisms and that light pollution changes them
03:04
uh specifically gross primary production and ecosystem respiration change with light pollution levels
03:11
we have a spanish study on led project products specifically talking about low cct led pc amber led and how
03:19
that interacts with light pollution standards this is a great breakdown out of a bunch of different products
03:24
and a bunch of different types weighing the pros and cons of filters lenses and led sources and
03:30
really it determines that you have to reduce blue at the source no amount of lensing is really going to do it
03:38
for you we have a new flicker study from lund university and it calls for modulation rates in excess of 100 hertz
03:47
for comfort uh we have a possible mrna vaccine to reduce macular degeneration uh this is uh based on a study of mice
03:59
but it does show that the dual vaccination improves uh the aging eye kristin knudson has published a new
04:07
scientific statement on circadian rhythm and health this new paper calls for health care professionals and
04:14
policy makers to recognize the role of circadian rhythm in care and prevention in heart health
04:20
especially we also have a study that shows that circadian disruption
04:25
that circadian disruption makes lab mice more vulnerable to the flu off-cycle sleep and off-cycle
04:34
feeding increases the risk of infection and spread of influenza a the endothel clock has been linked with
04:41
organ development specifically blood vessel help health uh the university of glasgow is tracking
04:47
sensory pollutants for owls both sound and light and they have found in particular tawny owls
04:54
are having trouble reproducing in well-lit areas but not the well-lit areas near highways that's the
05:01
interesting part um that apparently um maybe maybe there's something about the highways that just gives
05:06
them more access to prey i don't know it's a bit of a it it more study head thinker maybe you can talk
05:13
to someone about it we have a study that shows that dim light at night changes the shape of hamster
05:20
pestis this is from the news desk of i read it so now you know need to know about it too but this study
05:28
also identified effects to liver metabolism of syrian hamsters syrian hamsters are a breed of hamster like
05:36
french poodles they don't have to be from syria but there are probably some downstream effects on
05:41
reproduction overall in mexico city the city will begin regulating light pollution uh the environmental
05:49
law for the protection of land in the federal district district has been amended to limit light
05:55
trespass uplight and glare port myers florida will be stepping up planning enforcement next year with new
06:02
plans for awareness building during sea turtle season rehoboth beach uh in delaware is pondering
06:08
a new lighting ordinance uh that's coming up for a vote soon simsbury connecticut is referring their
06:15
proposed lighting ordinance to the county uh the planning commission of the town is going to try to get
06:21
this happen that get the changes happening at the county level codes in baberton ohio they have
06:28
announced an indefinite ban on new data centers uh this moratorium will specifically address the noise
06:36
and light provided by those centers in bellevue idaho residue residents are playing are complaining about
06:44
new autoplex lighting this is a very large car dealership that just went came together and i gotta say
06:51
um link will be on restoringdarkness.com or if you're on the video version over bearish bearish sorry and uh
07:01
yeah it looks bad bro bro bro brockline massachusetts has tabled their nuisance lighting bylaw they had
07:08
planned on reducing light trespass to a single tenth of a foot candle uh but that law has been bounced over
07:16
to committee we'll see if that goes forward in glenn georgia turtle experts are calling for more action
07:22
they have a proposed possibly passed uh staged lighting change retrofit law so that over time
07:31
areas closer to the beach would be subject to more and more strict rules and that would carry up
07:37
further away from the beach but it's moving from the planning commission to public debate and then city
07:44
council itself big cypress national preserve might lose its dark sky status uh this is due to the ice
07:53
and dhs detention facility that they built nearby it has a stupid nickname that i'm not going to say
07:59
but it is a light hazard for the entire region in better news three towns in yorkshire have joined
08:07
at the greater north york moors dark sky zone specifically huswaith lastingham and slate home
08:13
uh slate home dale slate home dale sorry they are all already inside the zone but their towns have
08:19
been uh you know working to ensure lighting compliance parks uh specifically sports fields
08:26
in apache junction arizona have been recognized by dark sky specifically the softball fields at
08:32
prospector park and superstitions shadows park this is part of a larger pursuit of an urban dark sky
08:38
place certification little bits at a time i guess two arizona state parks are expanding their astrotourism
08:46
offerings specifically kit peak and lowell observatory they're adding open decks finished decks that you can
08:53
park your telescopes on they'll be hosting events on there it's probably going to be a big time good
08:58
time going forward fall long national scenic area in sichuan is now a dark sky park this is a first for
09:04
china speaking of china the shenzhou 20s hull was cracked by space debris which means it's no longer
09:11
be safe it's no longer safe to be used three crew members are presently stranded waiting for
09:19
the shenzhou 22 to come pick them up well they haven't announced when that's actually going to happen
09:26
again slow worth orbit low orbit objects are a source of light pollution for astronomers and also a source of
09:35
danger for people if we're going to keep putting people in space in things that are not sponsored but i think
09:42
are cool cyclone lighting has new lenses for their products and they meet dark sky
09:47
international's requirements for lighting projects products and they look pretty good
09:51
actually overall again not paying me to say that dark sky international has named their annual award
09:59
winners with people and places recognized for their work in the past year as well as one lifetime
10:04
achievement award that all happened at the start of the under one sky conference and i extend my
10:10
congratulations to all of them
10:12
i also want to extend my thanks to you for your time and attention uh if you want to leave a rating
10:20
a review or leave a donation that's great soft lights gets the donations and they do good work i also
10:26
want to thank nailed and darkness restoration one for backing this show and until next time take care of
10:34
yourself
10:47
you
