Bondi terror attack raises questions about police preparedness

In the immediate days after the Bondi terrorist attack Premier Chris Minns and the NSW Police Force said police 'policies' and 'resources' in response to major incidents would be reviewed.  It's raised questions around readiness for police to respond to active shooter threats particularly in public places.

00:09I think this is a crisis of safety for the whole Australian community.

00:13That feeling remains palpable as authorities now face questions about the immediate response to the Bondi terror attack.

00:21We just had the worst terror attack on Australian soil, so we didn't succeed in stopping it.

00:26There's a failure there, probably almost always as success as many fathers, failure actually also has many points where things break down.

00:34One of those points under investigation was why police on duty only had Glock pistols that require officers to shoot from close range.

00:43In New South Wales, only specialist officers such as the Tactical Operations Unit and the Riot Squad have long arm rifles.

00:51I'll reiterate, that is subject to the investigation at the moment.

00:55We base our policing response on the threat that exists at the time.

00:59In North America and some European countries, tactical operations units are often deployed for everyday patrols,

01:07instead of just responding to incidents like an active shooter situation.

01:12Some now believe Australia should do the same.

01:16You go to France, you go to Italy, you go to Germany, you will see armed guards, members of the armed forces in fact,
