As the world prepares for New Year’s Eve celebrations, security agencies are on high alert following recent terror incidents, including the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in Sydney and a foiled bombing plot in Los Angeles. Authorities warn that large gatherings remain attractive targets for lone attackers and extremist groups. Cities like Sydney have canceled fireworks, while others are tightening security with police deployments, barriers, and screenings. Experts advise caution, encouraging celebrants to stay aware of exits, remain in groups, and follow local safety guidelines. Despite these concerns, statistical data shows that holiday terror attacks are rare, though vigilance remains critical worldwide.

00:29At night, cities around the world are putting the finishing touches on New Year's Eve celebrations.
00:37But they're also preparing for something else, heightened security, following a series of recent terror incidents.
00:49This year's preparations come just weeks after the Bondi Beach shooting on December 14th, where 15 people were killed.
00:56And after authorities say they foiled a New Year's bombing plan in Los Angeles.
01:03These events have prompted governments, law enforcement agencies, and event organizers to rethink what safe celebration really means.
01:16Across the globe, you'll see more police, more barriers, more screening, and in some places, no celebrations at all.
01:26Sydney, Australia, which includes the Bondi Beach area, cancelled its iconic fireworks out of respect for victims, and out of concern for public safety.
01:38And the public is feeling it, too.
01:44Some locals say they'll stay home this year, avoiding crowded areas, not because they don't want to celebrate, but because they don't feel completely safe.
01:54So, how real is the threat?
02:00Experts say that large gatherings can be attractive targets, because an attack doesn't just harm people, it creates a powerful psychological shock.
02:12But statistically, terror attacks in Western countries are rare, and have actually declined since 2007.
02:26Still, there have been tragic exceptions.
02:29Last year in New Orleans, a man drove a truck into a crowd and then opened fire, killing 14 people.
02:35Europe has seen similar incidents, including a Christmas market attack in Magdeburg, Germany, in 2024, which left six people dead and many more injured.
02:50According to federal authorities, the greatest risk often comes from lone attackers or very small groups.
02:56A joint FBI and Homeland Security report says that ISIS, Al Qaeda and their supporters still express interest in targeting major events, especially in large cities like New York, where Times Square remains an aspirational target.
03:15Because of that, police have been urged to watch closely for vehicle ramming attempts.
03:20And to be ready for threats that are hard to detect until the very last moment.
03:28So, how are cities responding?
03:31Some places, including Paris, have canceled major public events altogether.
03:37In New Orleans, the National Guard has been deployed to support police through New Year's Eve, the Sugar Bowl and even Mardi Gras, reinforcing security for the millions of visitors expected.
03:48Officials stress that visible security isn't meant to scare people, it's meant to reassure them.
03:56They say a strong presence can deter criminals and help crowds feel safer.
04:02But despite that reassurance, event organizers in Sydney expect smaller crowds this year.
04:09One planner said that it was almost an air of defeatism, but also argued that well-managed, organized events are still safer than spontaneous gatherings.
04:26Authorities emphasize that these precautions aren't meant to create fear.
04:29They're meant to empower people.
04:32For the vast majority, New Year's Eve will remain what it has always been.
04:36A night of celebration, reflection, and hope for the year ahead.
