00:00It's a return to dialogue.
00:02After 16 days of fierce artillery fire exchange, defense officials from Thailand and Cambodia
00:08are discussing the resumption of a previous cease-fire brokered by Malaysia and the US
00:13at the Ban Pakad Palin checkpoint south of their shared 817-kilometer border.
00:19Both countries have accused the other of breaking the previous truce.
00:23The decision to hold talks came on Monday following a meeting between ASEAN leaders
00:27in Kuala Lumpur, but the plan was off to a rocky start with disagreements over a neutral venue.
00:34Ahead of the meeting, Cambodia's defense ministry urged Thailand to cease all fighting.
00:39Cambodia urged that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activity and withdraw its force
00:47from Cambodia in territorial integrity and a wide act of incursion and aggression that
00:54threaten peace and stability in the region as a whole.
01:02Cambodia is also reportedly pushing to include a formal border demarcation, a move which Thailand
01:07has rejected as a cease-fire remains its priority.
01:11Bangkok on its part is requesting an official halt to clashes monitored by observers and cooperation
01:17in demining conflict zones.
01:19The hostilities are part of the latest flare-up of a decades-old dispute over the colonial-era
01:25demarcation of their shared border.
01:27Despite the peace talks, fire exchange is ongoing as the neighbors accuse each other of hitting
01:32civilian areas in provinces along the frontier.
