00:00Thailand and Cambodia have agreed on a ceasefire to end weeks of clashes along their 817km shared
00:07border. The fighting was reignited in early December after an earlier truce brokered by
00:12Malaysia and the US ended the conflict back in July. The violence has killed more than 100 people
00:18and displaced over half a million living on both sides of the border. Now for more on this we can
00:24cross over to our Thailand correspondent Tommy Walker who's standing by for us in Chantaburi.
00:29Tommy thank you very much for joining us. Can you please bring us up to date on the latest?
00:36Yes the latest is about four hours ago local time 12 o'clock Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire
00:43agreement after nearly three weeks of border conflicts which raged throughout the 800km border
00:49around about 10 battlefronts at the peak of this conflict but now the ceasefire has been signed
00:55there's been no reports this afternoon of that being broken and there is a 72 hour window that
01:02both countries have agreed to to monitor whether this ceasefire will hold as mentioned there's been
01:08conflict here along the border in the past including in July the second time it's broken out this year
01:15so yes the ceasefire agreement's been signed and now we'll just have to wait to see whether both
01:21countries can adhere to this agreement. And this is not the first truce which the two neighbours have
01:28signed so is this one likely to hold any longer?
01:34Well that's the big question because you know for the people who've lived on the border for many years
01:39Thailand and Cambodia have sporadically broken out into flare-ups into into fire exchanges this this time
01:46around it's been certainly the most severe and you know these talks to get to the ceasefire today have
01:53been thrashed out all week and the first day of talks didn't go so well only 30 35 minutes and that that
02:00went along for us but the second day was a bit tense but finally both countries have i ended it out
02:05there's 16 points in this uh ceasefire agreement and basically it's both agreeing that neither militaries
02:13will agree to reinforce their troops they're both looking to allow civilians to return home as soon
02:17as possible um and you know trying to work together at policy level to try and improve relations and keep
02:27the border peaceful um so right now the focus will be on the next three days whether the whether sporadic
02:34outbreaks of fire will happen or not if they don't then we could see a return to normality sooner rather
02:42than later thank you very much that was tommy walker our correspondent in thailand
