00:30And the Hawks.
00:31Miami Heat basketball on FanDuel Sports Network,
00:34proudly presented by Carnival Cruise Line.
00:36Inside State Farm Arena, the 15-15 Heat face the 15-16 Hawks,
00:42and we always hope you enjoy every bounce and basket right along with us.
00:47Good news and bad news on the injury front for the Heat.
00:49The bad news first.
00:51Tyler Hero still out, and Bam Adebayo joins him.
00:53The captain will miss tonight's game with a sore lower back.
00:57Miami this year, 4-2, and he does not play.
01:01Good news for the Heat.
01:02Pella Larson returns after missing the last five games.
01:05He hasn't played since December 9th.
01:07The Heat can use his energy, and he will be in the starting lineup.
01:10And Nikola Jovic is also back after missing the last four games
01:15with an elbow contusion.
01:16He got injured 12 seconds into his game December the 15th,
01:19and he returns tonight.
01:21He'll come off the Heat bench.
01:22Hello again, Heat Nation.
01:24Welcome to Atlanta.
01:25Always great to have you with us.
01:26Just as great to be alongside the point guard, John Crotty.
01:30I'm Eric Green.
01:30Hope your Christmas was merry, and we all wish you a very happy, healthy new year.
01:35And, John, here we are 30 games into the season,
01:37and the Heat find themselves a 500 team after losing eight of their last nine.
01:42Crotty, it has been a rough month of December.
01:44Yeah, our Toyota trend talks about the struggles for Miami
01:47on the offensive end of the floor have been real.
01:492-8 in the month of December, and much of it because opposing defensors
01:55are making it really hard for Miami to push pace,
01:58to get out and score in transition, and get easier baskets.
02:02They've also prevented the drive-in kick game
02:04where Miami's been able to get those offensive scores.
02:09What I think Miami needs to do is continue to get out wider
02:13and really look for the pitch-ahead game to be able to get easier baskets.
02:16A lot of it will also happen with ball control, taking care of that basketball.
02:22A couple of trends that have not been good for either team.
02:25Three straight losses for Miami.
02:27They've dropped nine of their last 11.
02:29John mentioned the 2-8 December.
02:31That's tied for the NBA's worst December record
02:33with their next two teams on the schedule, Atlanta and Indiana.
02:36And the Hawks, 8 out of 10, have been losses.
02:38They got 10 road wins, just five wins at home.
02:41But, John, what they are getting is all-star level play
02:43from their 24-year-old forward, Jalen Johnson.
02:46Our Verizon reliable performer, Jalen Johnson, at 6'9 in his fifth year,
02:51is outstanding.
02:52Scoring the basketball, rebounding, and passing at a high level.
02:57He really loves playing with pace.
02:58Super athletic in transition, finishing on the basket.
03:02The mid-range jumper and being able to make,
03:04that's been a game-changer for him
03:06because defenses have to come out and guard him.
03:08He's got great vision.
03:09And his coach, Quinn Snyder, talks about his willingness
03:12to make the extra pass as well.
03:14And then there is the four-time all-star,
03:17but the enigmatic point guard in Trey Young,
03:19missed 22 games issue with a knee injury.
03:21And the Hawks found a way to win without him at 13-9.
03:24They are just 2-6 in the eight games he has played.
03:28This guy once had a 50-point game against the Heat.
03:31That's an important game for these two teams.
03:32They both need a win.
03:34Neither team happy with where they stand
03:36in the Eastern Conference standings,
03:38trying to take the next step in the right direction.
03:40The Heat and Hawks coming your way next.
03:45Seven straight shots now, a turnover,
03:47eight straight points for Toronto.
03:48This is not what I would have predicted.
03:51I thought we were ready.
03:53Barnes escapes, and the Raptors running away early for Miami.
03:58It was a lifeless start,
04:00and then we just felt like we were digging back
04:03the rest of the game.
04:05We're a young team, but we've got to focus on
04:07the details of the game.
04:08That's going to help us get out this losing streak.
04:12I think, ultimately, we just got to do more, dig deeper.
04:15You know, it's one thing.
04:16When you've got one bad game,
04:18but when it's, you know, a lot of struggles,
04:21things not going our way,
04:23you know, we've got to dig deep and find a way to win.
04:25And, you know, if you only win when you make your shots,
04:28you're only going to win, you know, half the games.
04:30And we want to be better than that.
04:32We want to be a great team.
04:33So we just got to dig deeper
04:34and bring more every single night.
04:40The Miami Heat this season
04:41have used 12 different starting lineups.
04:44The one they will use tonight has been successful.
04:46They've gone 4-2 with Pella Larson in that starting group.
04:50Matter of fact, they're 10-6 with Larson as a starter.
04:534-2 with that group.
04:55Davion Mitchell, Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins,
04:58Pella Larson, and Kela Ware.
05:01Kela Ware, Trey Young, Dyson Daniels,
05:04Zachary Rezache, Jalen Johnson,
05:07and Onyeka Okongwu, undersized,
05:09but seldom overmatched.
05:11The 6'9 center had a Southern cap.
05:14Our officiating crew assigned to work tonight's game.
05:16Sean Wright, Nate Green, and Jenna Schroeder.
05:20Now, no Christmas hangover
05:22for either one of these teams, John.
05:24Both desperately seeking a victory.
05:25Both have been mired in December losing streaks.
05:28Yeah, amazing that they both are tied
05:30for the worst record in December.
05:32I think the pace is going to be frenetic tonight,
05:35which should really benefit Miami
05:36getting back to their winning ways.
05:38Eric Spolster said before the game,
05:40we can't play fast enough.
05:42He wants a double down
05:43on one of the best paces in the league.
05:46Heat Nation, Merry Christmas,
05:48Happy New Year, and off we go
05:49on another Miami Heat NBA adventure.
05:52Heat want to be the aggressors tonight.
05:54Powell driving in, pump faking,
05:57and knocking it down off glass.
05:59Great composure there.
06:01Norman Powell got to the spot he wanted.
06:04Two-foot jump stop, ball fake,
06:05and get the defense off balance
06:07before using that glass.
06:10This is Jalen Johnson,
06:12number one, the man to watch for Atlanta.
06:14He's been their best player all year,
06:16playing like an all-star.
06:18Daniels pass, intercepted by Powell.
06:20Norman Powell been active defensively.
06:23Powell bumping, lost it out of bounds
06:25off his shoe top.
06:27Reza Shea going to get called for the foul now.
06:29A little bump action there.
06:32Norman Powell working the baseline
06:34with the probing dribble.
06:35Coach Quinn Snyder not happy with the call.
06:37Was a bit late, but Norman Powell
06:39hard take to the basket with the left hand.
06:41By the way, Powell with that steal,
06:43he's now had at least one steal
06:45in five straight games.
06:47He's got ten steals over the last five games,
06:49including tonight.
06:51We're a minute into the first quarter.
06:53Heat with a three-pointer.
06:59Pella Larson knocks it down,
07:01his 26-triple this year.
07:03Boy, it's good to have Pella back in the Heat lineup.
07:05He just does so many of the glue things
07:08on both ends of the floor for Miami.
07:10Nice start for him after missing the last five.
07:14Oh, Reza Shea with a line drive triple.
07:17The second-year player from Madrid, Spain,
07:19averaging 11 points per game.
07:21He was the first pick back in the 2024 NBA draft.
07:26It's a 5-3 Heat lead.
07:29Wiggins driving a pull-up.
07:30Bank shot drops.
07:32Heat have gotten off to a nice start
07:34on the offensive end,
07:35making their first three shots to open the game.
07:37Remember how they opened the Toronto game on Tuesday,
07:40John, missing 11 of their first 12 shots.
07:42Just getting multiple starters engaged here,
07:46but some offensive balance is so important.
07:48Jalen Johnson got bumped and fouled.
07:50This is going to go against Miami.
07:53This guy's having a breakout season.
07:56He is in line to get an all-star nod this year.
07:59He has played extremely well for Atlanta.
08:02Really shouldered the load and carried the team
08:04when Trey Young was out for 22 games
08:07with that sprained MCL.
08:08It's been Jalen Johnson scoring, rebounding,
08:11even assisting.
08:12He is looking at his numbers.
08:13Over eight assists a game for a 6-9 forward.
08:17Really, really impressive production
08:18this guy has put out this year.
08:20Davion Mitchell committed that foul.
08:22You're right about Jalen Johnson,
08:24a young man who is from Milwaukee,
08:25played collegiately at Duke,
08:27averaged 19 points, 10 rebounds,
08:30and five assists last year,
08:32but just 36 games.
08:33This year, he's at just under 24 points a game
08:36for the Hawks with 10.5 rebounds
08:37and over eight assists.
08:39But Crotty was telling you,
08:40this former Duke Blue Devil, well-rounded.
08:43Wiggins, unimpeded,
08:45driving to the basket for the score,
08:47and Miami's now made their first four shots
08:49to start the game.
08:52This is Okongwu,
08:54bouncing back for Trey Young,
08:56who misses on the run.
08:58And Powell clears it for the Heat.
09:00Trey Young averaging 19 points a game this year.
09:03Here's Norman to the paint.
09:05He got stripped, but he got fouled.
09:11And this one is going to go on Trey Young.
09:14That's his first.
09:15And the second team foul on Atlanta.
09:18Atlanta's ninth in the East.
09:19They are a tenth of a percentage point
09:21ahead of the Bulls,
09:23even though they just lost two games in a row
09:25to the Bulls by a total of five points.
09:27Sunday, it was a 152-150 Chicago win.
09:31Most points scored and allowed by Atlanta this year.
09:34Then Tuesday, they lost to the Bulls,
09:35126-123.
09:38John, before the game,
09:39their head coach,
09:41Quinn Snyder, saying,
09:43our defense has not been good enough recently
09:45to win games.
09:46Yeah, it's really fallen off.
09:47Again, they've really struggled
09:50blowing that 18-point lead
09:52they had in Chicago,
09:53allowing them back in
09:54into the fourth quarter.
09:56They've had a tough time
09:57integrating Trey Young
09:59back into their lineup, too.
10:00I mean, this is a guy
10:01who's a four-time All-Star,
10:02but he has yet to win a game yet
10:04this season with Atlanta
10:07and his time back
10:09after that sprained knee.
10:10Loose ball.
10:11Kahlil Weir deflected it.
10:13Mitchell stole it.
10:13Here they come.
10:15The Roadrunners.
10:16Powell for three.
10:18First miss of the game for Miami.
10:21Comes almost three minutes into the game.
10:23Good shot attempt there.
10:25Open three for Norman Powell,
10:27who is an excellent three-point shooter,
10:29over 40%.
10:30He's really making the effort to push it.
10:32Trey Young on the drive and score.
10:36He hasn't handled the ball much
10:37so far tonight,
10:38but he has a chance
10:39at a three-point play.
10:41This 27-year-old
10:42in his eighth season
10:43out of Oklahoma.
10:44Always a threat
10:45to shoot the long ball.
10:47Left-hand hesitation dribble
10:48and gets the step on Davion
10:50after the contact
10:51and one for Trey Young.
10:55Again, he's...
10:56Let's see, he's...
10:58They were 13-10 without him.
11:00They're 2-6 without him.
11:02Overall,
11:03but since he's come back
11:04from the latest injury,
11:07they've lost, you know,
11:09all the games
11:09that he's been back
11:10in all three.
11:11So, you know,
11:13it has not been
11:13an easy integration
11:14back into that lineup.
11:16Powell, baseline driving
11:17and dishing.
11:19Getting it back.
11:20Good, quick move
11:21to the paint and out.
11:22Larson gets a good look.
11:24Kaboom!
11:25Well, the ball found the energy
11:27in the open shooter.
11:28That's two first-quarter triples
11:30for Pella Larson.
11:31Great spacing.
11:31Down the other way,
11:32it's Daniels.
11:34Now, don't look away
11:35or blink even tonight.
11:36These two teams
11:37playing at a torrent pace
11:38this year.
11:39Yeah, really got to get back
11:40in defensive transition.
11:42Pick up the ball
11:42because it's going to
11:43get down fast.
11:45That was a great crossover
11:46dribble for Davion Mitchell.
11:47Larson knocked it
11:49out of bounds.
11:49It will be Atlanta ball.
11:51Well, the Hawks have made
11:54three of their first four shots.
11:55The Heat five
11:56for their first seven.
11:58Atlanta, ten wins
12:00on the road, ten and seven,
12:02just five and nine at home.
12:06Unusual to have
12:07that much of a disparity.
12:10He played almost four minutes.
12:11The Heat with a five-point lead.
12:13Here's Trae Young
12:14bouncing for a kangaroo.
12:15Hitting the jump hook.
12:20Nice mix-up there.
12:22Known for being more
12:23of a three-point shooter.
12:24Was able to put it down
12:25on the deck,
12:26used the size at six-nine
12:27to shoot over the top.
12:29Wiggins, tap dancing.
12:32Missing the three.
12:33Rebound at Jalen Johnson.
12:35He's 6'8", 220.
12:37Former five-star recruit
12:38when he went to Duke.
12:42Valaab for a kangaroo
12:43underneath on Powell.
12:44Lays it in.
12:45Too easily.
12:46For all five Atlanta starters
12:48in the scorebook,
12:49they're on a nine-to-two run.
12:51The Heat with a one-point lead.
12:54Davion.
12:56Powell for three.
12:58Short.
12:59And the rebound
12:59of Jalen Johnson.
13:00And here come the Hawks.
13:04Larson defending Johnson.
13:07Dotted line turnaround
13:08right there.
13:10Jalen Johnson
13:11with his first field goal.
13:13it's now an 11-to-two run
13:15for Atlanta
13:15and their first lead
13:17of the game
13:17at 15-to-14.
13:21Cross court for Larson.
13:23Slips by Johnson.
13:25Go!
13:26Goodness gracious!
13:28A Kalil Ware slam dunk
13:30on a perfectly thrown lob.
13:31Great decision by
13:32Pella Larson
13:33to put it on a platter there
13:35for Kalil.
13:36Getting inside the defense
13:38with the hard fake
13:39and drive inside.
13:40Feet in the paint.
13:42Getting to that lob.
13:43That was Kalil Ware's
13:4458th dunk this year.
13:45He ranks seventh
13:46in the NBA this year
13:47in dunks.
13:48One of seven categories
13:50where Kalil ranks
13:51in the top 14
13:52in the NBA.
13:54Larson.
13:54A bump.
13:56A hook.
13:56And a score.
13:57Johnny looks like
13:58he's missed
13:59no time at all.
14:00Pella Larson
14:01who hasn't played
14:02since December 9th
14:03has made his first
14:04three shots tonight.
14:05Has eight quick
14:05first quarter points
14:07and now
14:07to the warehouse.
14:08Getting downhill.
14:10Two-on-one action.
14:11Throws the lob
14:12to the right side.
14:13And it's the warehouse
14:14on the catch
14:15and crush.
14:19You know
14:21check off
14:22on Christmas Eve
14:24we had a good practice
14:25they were both
14:25able to get after it
14:27and they're eager
14:28to get back out there.
14:30Wait for it to hurt less.
14:31Still hurts
14:32but doesn't hurt
14:33that much
14:34you know
14:34I can play
14:34so
14:35team is struggling
14:36a little bit now
14:36so I guess
14:37we need everybody
14:38and I guess
14:40I'm here to
14:40help the team.
14:42Yeah I mean
14:42been staying back
14:43from road trips
14:44and just working
14:45with Jeffries
14:46every day
14:47couple hours
14:48and trying to get
14:49the ankle right
14:50and also the other
14:51trainers so
14:52it's been a little bit
14:54a grind on my own
14:54away from the team
14:55but I'm happy
14:56to be back with them.
14:58You know
14:59Miami had a Christmas
15:00Eve morning practice
15:01and Nico
15:03and Pella
15:03engaged in a
15:05three-on-three
15:05full court workout
15:06and that had
15:07Eric Spolstra
15:08encouraged
15:08even after the
15:09disappointing loss
15:10to Toronto
15:10the night before
15:11just knowing
15:12those two guys
15:12were on the horizon
15:13of coming back
15:14gave the head coach
15:15some hope
15:16heading into Christmas
15:17day.
15:18Certainly the fresh
15:18bodies the energy
15:19we were seeing it
15:20already with Pella
15:21Larson out there
15:22as a nice crossover
15:24pullback
15:25by Davion Mitchell.
15:26Now all five
15:27Heat starters
15:27have scores
15:28that's Nikhil

16:42one of the top
16:42rebounders
16:43in the NBA
16:43Boy that's just
16:47a great drive
16:48E
16:48Jaquez Jr.
16:49doing what he does
16:50hard take
16:51right down
16:52the gut
16:53of the defense
16:53but the decision
16:55making there
16:56of making the pass
16:58when the double
16:58team collapsed
16:59on him
17:00finds Norman Powell
17:01Heat on an 11-0
17:02run here
17:03taking control
17:04tonight's key
17:06player profile
17:07focuses in
17:08on third year
17:08forward out of
17:09UCLA
17:09Jaime Jaquez Jr.
17:11an early season
17:11candidate
17:12for the NBA's
17:13top six man
17:14against the
17:15Knicks 23
17:17against Toronto
17:1821
17:19so that's 22
17:19points a game
17:20on 58% shooting
17:21but John
17:22it's the overall
17:22game that's been
17:23so impressive
17:24all season long
17:25for Jaquez
17:26he's been really
17:27good due to the
17:28pace of play
17:29that Miami
17:29has great spacing
17:31it allows him
17:32to come off
17:32the bench
17:33and have more
17:34room to operate
17:35he's such a good
17:36driver
17:36he leads the team
17:37and drives
17:37he gets into the
17:38paint
17:38but it's his
17:39decision making
17:40when he's in there
17:40when to shoot
17:41to score
17:41and when to pass
17:42to set up
17:43his teammates
17:43he has been a
17:45consistent producer
17:46for Miami
17:47shoots a high
17:48percentage
17:48over 51%
17:51because he finishes
17:52around the basket
17:53not only at the rim
17:55but in that
17:55I would call it
17:568 to 15 foot area
17:58he's just so effective
18:00Miami forcing
18:01a 4th turnover
18:02on Atlanta
18:03the Heat
18:03been exquisite
18:04so far
18:0410 to 15 shooting
18:06and no turnovers
18:07Drew Smith
18:08and Kaz Yacochonis
18:10the Heat
18:11backcourt right now
18:12they've got just
18:13about 4 minutes left
18:14first quarter
18:15Heat have scored
18:16the last 11
18:17Kalel
18:18short from 3
18:20rebound comes down
18:21to Dyson Daniels
18:22Daniels
18:23the 6'7 guard
18:24out of Australia
18:25who led the NBA
18:26in steals last year
18:27this year he's
18:28number 2
18:28Alexander Walker
18:30to the backcourt
18:31to retrieve it
18:32this is Jalen Johnson
18:36Drew Smith
18:37good double
18:37Alexander Walker
18:38knocks in the triple
18:40and that's the risk
18:41you take when you
18:42leave your man
18:42to double D
18:43that's right
18:43you've got to
18:44make choices
18:45and Alexander Walker
18:46has played extremely
18:47well for them
18:48career high in points
18:49he actually averages
18:51almost 11 points
18:53more this season
18:54than he did last
18:55that's the second
18:56biggest differential
18:57and jump in the league
18:58he averages over
18:5820 points a game
19:00he has 82 triples
19:02this year
19:03even though he's been
19:03slumping recently
19:04good defense by
19:05Veet Krejci
19:06forcing Drew Smith
19:07into the miss
19:08here's Krejci
19:11good 3 point shooter
19:12matter of fact
19:14he's a terrific
19:143 point shooter
19:15Veet Krejci
19:166'8
19:17out of Czechoslovakia
19:18got 73 triples
19:20on 48% shooting
19:22the number 3
19:233 point percentage
19:24player in the NBA
19:25this year
19:26yeah it was trailing
19:27there
19:27everyone's so worried
19:28about Jalen Johnson
19:29it allows him to be
19:30able to just walk
19:32right into that triple
19:33oh Powell had the
19:34layup but he missed
19:35it here comes
19:35Alexander Walker
19:36back to Jalen Johnson
19:38to the paint
19:39and he drops it in
19:41plus a foul
19:42Jalen Johnson
19:44not settling
19:45he's so good
19:48in transition
19:49using that
19:51athleticism
19:52catches it at the
19:53top
19:54little hesitation
19:55sees that he's
19:56still got to step
19:57with Norman Powell
19:58later to get back
19:59and it was 5 on 4
20:01Johnson opts
20:03to take it himself
20:03and all the way
20:04to the rim
20:05takes about 12 shots
20:06on the paint
20:07the game
20:07really effective
20:09getting to that
20:09free throw line
20:10to about 6
20:11free throws
20:12a game
20:12he has just
20:14elevated every
20:15aspect
20:15and as I mentioned
20:17I think he's going
20:18to get an all-star
20:18nod this year
20:19the way he's
20:20playing right now
20:20the numbers he's
20:21putting up
20:22are spectacular
20:22it's a 9-0
20:25Atlanta run
20:26they have tied
20:27the game at 24
20:29Yaka Chonis
20:30driving in on
20:31Muhammad Gay
20:31who reached in
20:32and committed
20:33the foul
20:33the 23 year old
20:36Muhammad Gay
20:37originally from

21:06in a row

21:07like 28 minutes
21:09in the game
21:09against Toronto
21:10he's averaging
21:10almost 6 points
21:11per game
21:12John how would
21:12you evaluate
21:13the progress
21:14this 19 year old
21:15rookie is making
21:16I think look
21:16I think he's showing
21:17a solid progress
21:19you know that start
21:20he had in Boston
21:21was just outstanding
21:23with 5 triples
21:244 assists
21:25just 1 turnover
21:26he's been coming
21:27off the bench
21:28after that effort
21:29and you know
21:30not quite playing
21:31as many minutes
21:31but still playing
21:32with great energy
21:33great composure
21:35knows what he's
21:36supposed to be
21:36doing out there
21:37and providing
21:38a lift where he can
21:40he had 17.6 rebounds
21:415 assists
21:42in that start
21:43he made
21:44against the Celtics
21:45Krejci
21:45tough one
21:46in and out
21:47and the rebound
21:48bounces to
21:49Niko Jovic
21:49in the game
21:50for the first time

22:47down the other end
22:48Gay picks up the foul
22:49trying to reject

50:41Halfway through
50:42Game number 31
50:44Season number 38 for the Heat
50:46And a lot to like so far
50:48Through the first two quarters
50:49In the first of four matchups
50:51Between the Heat and the Atlanta Hawks
50:53Hope your Christmas and Hanukkah were perfect
50:55And we wish you a happy healthy new year upcoming
50:58Eric Reid with John Crotty
51:00John, a lovable first half of the Heat
51:02The offense and the rebounding
51:04All ignited by Pella Larson
51:06Is his takeoff in the starting lineup
51:09Exciting to have him back
51:10After the ankle injury
51:11Missed five games
51:12But boy, he came right from the get-go
51:14He was impactful with his ability to make shots
51:17And also make the hustle plays
51:19Quick catch and shoot three
51:21Got him going
51:22And made the defense have to come out
51:24To guard him further from the basket
51:26Then he was able to get inside and attack
51:28Beautiful lob assist there
51:31Had two assists to go along with five makes
51:34This nice left-hand finish over Jalen Johnson
51:37Really nice job getting out
51:40And finishing in transition too
51:42He was a big reason why Miami's ahead here at the half
51:45With his production
51:46And really great hustle on the floor as well
51:49By the way, the Heat this year
51:50Ten wins and six losses
51:52In Pella Larson's first 16 starts
51:55Good work
51:57The energy for Larson
51:59The second-year man
52:00A former second-ranker
