00:00babies or animals but what if they're baby animals
00:06it was only born this morning on this all new season welcome back to the ever-changing world
00:16of taronga where you'll witness things you never thought possible you can actually hear her breathe
00:25and meet new faces oh hi buddy you'll never forget so good it's time to discover oh my god exactly
00:36who's who in this zoo
00:40on this episode it doesn't feel good a heart-stopping moment he's now not breathing
00:50literally i can't hear her breathe as this majestic cat just keep bagging keep bagging
00:56is brought back from the dead so that adrenaline's in meet laura and beck it doesn't look like we've
01:03got any termites in here yet possibly the only two humans it's a bit of a guessing game excited
01:10to find termites we haven't done anything like this before and a trip to the dentist for the
01:17world's largest rodent they have really big inside the teeth really huh i hadn't noticed
01:24at taronga western plain zoo a wild week is nothing new but this particular week is shaping up to be
01:42a bit wilder than usual for taronga's vets and nurses it's a pretty busy time at the wildlife
01:49hospital at the moment yeah i'm going to put three different drugs in his cocktail
01:53so i'm going to have a second one drawn up for the dark in case we need it so we've actually got
02:02two tiger anesthetics planned mainly to look at their dental health and the two incoming patients
02:08are not just any tigers they're senior sumatran tigers sartu and sakti sartu is our eldest tiger
02:17here at the zoo and he's just had his 18th birthday last month sakti is i guess our spring chicken here
02:24at the tiger facility he is actually 13 years of age over there in sumatra you'd probably expect
02:31tigers to live to be approximately 10 to 12 years of age however when they have a high standard of
02:38care quite often they can live to their late teens even their early 20s for us our main focus is making
02:44sure that our animals have a good healthy life and that's exactly what today's double tiger checkup
02:52is all about so i've got both pole syringes i've got the blowpipe yeah dart rifle yeah hand injections
02:59drawn up here yeah the first tiger on the list is the eldest sartu we know that he's had some dental
03:06issues in the past and he's got some canines that have fractured and been treated with root canals
03:10want to make sure there's nothing painful our dental veterinary specialist david is flying in from
03:15melbourne today for these procedures if the dental specialist finds any issues with the tiger's teeth
03:21that could make things a little more complicated big cats they are prone to getting high potassium
03:28in their blood while they're under anesthetic and that can be a life-threatening complication
03:32particularly with long procedures we want to try and keep our anesthetic time as low as we can but
03:37dental procedures can be quite lengthy being an older cat there's a little bit of an increased risk
03:41with his anesthetic the high potassium can affect his heart rhythm and in a really severe case you can
03:47actually have a cardiac arrest so we'll keep the procedure as short as we can
03:51before they can begin the procedure they'll need to sedate sartu
03:55we have got a hand injection and a 21 gauge needle
04:02all right good luck thank you
04:05so we're going to head in now with um the anesthetic drugs that the vets have given us to administer
04:12it won't be long until they call us i don't think to say come up
04:15we'll let the vets know how his injection has gone
04:17all right i'm going
04:19dutch
04:21hold up
04:26that's awesome well done that's so amazing that's all gone perfectly
04:42with the first tiger asleep i've checked he's got no blink the team quietly enter the den and prepare
04:52him for the move to the animal hospital all right let me get the catheter stuff ready
04:56um so we've got quite a big team working on sartu
05:00so i'm getting a reading heart rate's 80 we've got three vets working on him we've got three nurses
05:08so far like it's usually hard we want to make sure that um we do everything as efficiently as we can
05:14every team member plays a crucial role and as they continue prepping sartu vet nurse jane
05:22notices a change in his vitals he's got an odd breathing pattern getting closer closer closer than breath hold
05:30yeah yeah how long have we been since injection
05:33oh 10 15 minutes
05:35okay vet elisa watches closely assessing the tiger's respiration rate
05:42yeah he hasn't had a good deep breath for a minute
05:43if taronga in sydney had a prize for the most relaxed and laid-back resident
05:57buddy how you doing this guy would certainly be a top contender
06:04this is carlos he is one of our capybara boys we've got four males
06:12capybara boys are native to south america i kind of like to call them south american hippopotamuses
06:19they love to spend time in the water they do have webbed feet just like a duck
06:24and they hold their breath for five minutes as well just like hippos
06:28it's actually their kind of safety refuge so they do have quite a few predators
06:35in the wild and what they'll do they'll go into the water to protect themselves
06:39can see with his ears eyes and nose they're all in a straight line all together
06:43so they'll kind of just be sitting with those above and they can see and hear everything
06:48well darcy you might want to cover his ears for this next bit
06:53so tomorrow he's just booked in for a general anesthetic
06:56just to make sure he's all nice and healthy
06:59obviously when he is under the anesthetic we can actually get a good look
07:02what's going on like taronga's sumatran tigers in dubbo six-year-old carlos is also getting on a bit
07:10carlos is turning six in a couple of weeks now six for a capybara is actually getting quite old for
07:17them in the wild life expectancy is probably about seven or eight for a male so much the same as our
07:24tigers darcy will not only get a physical but a dental check too with capybaras they are the world's
07:32largest rodents so being a rodent they have really big incisor teeth growing constantly
07:38we give them a lot of brows you know branches and that actually helps with their dental care
07:43if you've ever wondered what a capybara toothbrush looks like and i know i have well wonder no more
07:51this is a cocos log they'll chew on that throughout the day just kind of trims down his teeth and just
07:57make sure they don't become overgrown with the general anesthetic tomorrow we can actually get a much
08:01better look at his teeth just to make sure they're all nice and healthy and there's no issues with
08:05them as well carlos is super affectionate um he's super comfortable with people he's very tactile he
08:12loves pats um you can give him a good scratch like this um and yeah just really curious um when we come
08:18in he's always kind of the first one to come over to see what food we have or just what we're up to
08:22as well this trusting relationship between keeper darcy and carlos the capybara might be tested
08:30tomorrow when carlos has to be anesthetized my role will be to hand inject carlos for his procedure
08:37capybara skin is quite tough so it's a bit hard to get the needle in i know he's going to do great
08:43but i've been building up so much for this hand injection i want it to go smoothly so yeah just
08:48thinking about that a lot so quite nerve-wracking a lot of anxiety right now
08:52yeah he hasn't had a good deep breath for a minute back at taronga western plains zoo all right let me
09:01get you out of the way aged sumatran tiger satu has just been sedated last time he had a 16 tube
09:08but he's now struggling to breathe i'm just tubing it it's not an uncommon occurrence in aged animals
09:16under anesthetic and the vet team begins intubating him to assist his breathing just tell me when
09:22you're ready yep ready yeah gee mate gee 10 have you got a visual not really i can see the epiglottis
09:32no we might have to change to sternal i think there's not a flop going on so we're just gonna have to sit
09:37him up on his tummy to get a better position for tubing on three one two three in sternal leg under
09:48is that better capture yeah that's heaps better with any older animal there are increased risks
09:53with anesthetic um just because their organs are a bit more tired they may not be working as well
09:58he's doing very tiny shallow breaths it's right we'll just get him on the truck and yeah just we can
10:03breathe for him if we need to with his breathing now supported the vet team can move satu to the
10:11wildlife hospital to be prepped for his dental exam good to go yeah oh god what a crowd oh yeah
10:21okay one two three go you got it okay all right so we'll get him on hook him up yep so we're on four
10:35percent we are on two percent four leaders it's nothing like hitting the ground running the treatment
10:43room is packed with veterinary staff and there's also a crowd gathered to watch not one but two
10:50tigers making a visit to dubbo's wildlife hospital yes everybody this is david and tracy thank you
10:59left side yep okay so two or one's missing yep two two has three millimeters all around and abrasion
11:09so we're very privileged to be um welcoming veterinary dental specialist david to dubbo he's actually come
11:14here all the way from melbourne okay uh gingeritis of one calculus of one and david's one of a handful
11:20of veterinary dental specialists in australia who has um the skills and the knowledge and experience
11:24to do this type of procedure on a tiger so this is a tiger that i looked at in 2011 and also in 2019
11:33and he fractured these canine teeth which are the big fang teeth and i did what's called root canal
11:38procedures on them and i'm back here today to take some x-rays so we'll have to leave in a minute
11:46okay okay i'm ready when you are clear while dental specialist david works his way through
11:55the necessary x-rays one done looks good x-ray again vet elisa monitors a sample of sato's blood
12:04to check how he's responding to the anesthetic so we've just done his first sort of blood test and
12:09we've got his baseline potassium um which is something we've got to monitor really carefully
12:13through his procedure so his baseline is four which is perfectly normal and our intervention
12:18point is if it increases by one sato's blood potassium levels are good which means there is
12:24little risk of damage to the tiger's heart but if the levels were to get too high it could cause a
12:32cardiac arrest jane you got a blood pressure there yep got it everything needs to be considered 116 over 58
12:40the team are constantly balancing the tiger's surgery with the clinical realities of sedating
12:46such an aged animal we are seeing some of the kidney values a little bit on the high side and we want to
12:51make sure that we're not making anything worse so we're watching his blood pressure really closely
12:56his heart may not function as well as a younger cat we may have some issues underlying with his kidneys
13:00and we certainly don't want to make those things worse while he's under anesthetic with sato being older
13:05a low blood pressure event during anesthetic that can actually push them into kidney failure
13:12still to come he's a bit nervous darcy's big surprise i think he definitely knows something
13:17is happening but just how will carlos react feeling a little bit nervous about it all and one two three
13:26double trouble some tough decisions ahead he's not particularly stable for vet elisa we're in the danger zone
13:35here's a quick echidna quiz how many termites do you think these spiny anteaters devour each day
13:48a few hundred a few thousand nope each echidna in the wild would eat about 10 000 termites a day
13:56that's more than a few so if you had to rustle up that many you might need to get a little
14:04creative think outside the box yep this box what we're doing here today it's a little unusual i'm
14:12here to find some termite mounds set some traps and hopefully be capturing some termites to bring back
14:19for the echidnas i've chosen this location because we believe it may be an active termite mound it is
14:26experimental no guarantees that we're going to be able to collect anything but we're willing to sort
14:31of do a bit of trial and error laura has traveled to some local bushland to try out an interesting
14:38termite trap technique i've got a bucket here it's got some holes drilled in the bottom what i'm going to do
14:43is pop down next to the nest its scientific name is a termite bait station going to collect up some
14:51soil from nearby basically it's a bucket full of tasty termite treats a little bit of leaf litter as
14:58well here's some wood that i've collected from nearby it looks like it's already had some termite
15:04activity on it what i'm going to do is i'm going to pop it in the bucket here to try and encourage
15:08them to enter this one and start to eat this wood i mean it looks pretty enticing right i just want to
15:16get the bottom of it just below the surface level here so the holes are just in the soil a little bit
15:23of water will just create a moist environment and encourage them to move in and really what self-respecting
15:30termite wouldn't want to move in so the last thing left to do is just pop the lid on it
15:38we'll leave it and we'll see if some termites have moved in
15:45hmm they termite or they termite not we'll have to wait and see
15:55back in dubbo at the taronga wildlife hospital so we just need to radiograph 404 and 104. not one but
16:03two aged sumatran tigers are each booked in for a thorough dental checkup and health assessment
16:11x-ray first up is 18 year old sartu and while the dental examination is quite routine it's the side
16:19effects from the general anaesthetic that's keeping the vet team on their toes we may have some issues
16:26with his kidneys and we certainly don't want to make those things worse while he's under anaesthetic
16:30low blood pressure can actually push them into kidney failure and it's not just
16:34low blood pressure that they have to monitor the drug combination he's had does tend to
16:38keep their blood pressure a little bit high so we want to make sure that that's all fine blood
16:43pressure is 102 over 58 mean of 73. so at the moment his blood pressure is really good
16:51title's stable everything's stable though if we're seeing trends that we need to intervene then we've got
16:56everything ready to do that the team are allowing a three hour window to keep sartu anaesthetized while
17:04specialist david examines and addresses any issues with the tiger's teeth was this the one that's got
17:12the fracture but should there be any concerning signs that sartu's health is at risk vet elisa will
17:19stop the examination immediately and the tiger will be returned to its den to recover the throat packs
17:26out and his pharynx is clean did we take photos david yes yes it's great you've got them all yeah
17:31i've got pictures of his teeth yeah yeah that's all not his head okay we don't have to do any treatment
17:35on this side we just need to take some radiographs okay okay x-ray x-ray again just step back a meter and
17:43that would be good oh so his respiration's got up a tiny bit yeah oh that looks good excellent
17:53his mouth is perfectly fine so he's got wonderful oral health for an 18 year old tiger we are done
18:00wow look at you go yeah so the rest of the teeth are good yeah perfect that's what we want to hear david
18:06while the dental exam has concluded the vet team are still performing their own assessment of the
18:13aged tiger all right let's go so i'm just taking the opportunity while he's under anesthetic to give
18:19him the full thorough examination so i'd like you would take your cat to the vet's once a year for a
18:24check-up we did find that he's got some arthritis in his joints and we've had a good look at his foot
18:32pads and we found that his toenails are a little bit long his claws look at that one do we need to that's
18:36got to trim that one that's going into his core so we wouldn't normally cut a tiger's nails
18:43but we're just noticing because he's getting a little bit older he's not wearing them down as much
18:47like your pet cat does as well no one anticipated a tiger manicure today but the team came prepared
18:54for anything though nailing this part is a bit more time consuming than expected so we've been monitoring
19:01very closely obviously well the whole time he's been under anesthetic um we've just noticed a couple
19:06of little parameters are changing co2's gone up a bit uh his respiration rate's just gone a little
19:15down he's not taking nice big deep breaths he's looking a bit paler than before
19:22how long are we at so it's been nearly two and a half i think we probably need to quit while we're ahead
19:27the stretcher must be outside i'll grab it we've decided the best thing today is probably just to
19:35be grateful of all the information that we've got we've checked his teeth we've done all the important
19:38things um we're not going to push it too much all right should we disconnect this we're going to get
19:43him back straight away to his enclosure one two three we'll go off that way even though the checkup
19:52finished slightly earlier than planned this grand old tiger appears to be a picture of health all right
20:00i'm giving you three verses so yeah i'm going to give him one and a half mils one and a half mil
20:10okay that can go out i'm just going to pull that tube now
20:14um for for an 18 year old cat um i think he's looking really good
20:22so that's one tiger down right folks if we can get the stretcher carriers please and one to go
20:29on three one two three next up is 13 year old sakhti recently keepers have noticed that he's just
20:38having a little bit of trouble eating and chewing when he eats his food so the first thing we're going
20:42to do is open his mouth and just see what's going on so you can see the tooth is broken off it should
20:47be as long as the lower one and the other side's just as bad oh gosh
20:55at taronga's wildlife hospital in sydney the vet team are preparing for a small excursion just make
21:02sure you've got surgical prep stock today we're going to be anesthetizing a capybara called carlos
21:09and we're going to be doing a thorough health check on him vet adelaide and her team will be
21:14examining carlos from tooth to tail liz mcconnell to capybara keeper
21:23hey we're just about to leave the hospital we're about to do a capybara anesthetic
21:26whereabouts would you like us to part you guys are welcome to come up to the dance let's be fun
21:32it's exciting to do a capybara yeah yeah so capybaras are unusual because they are a rodent
21:40i think a lot of people might forget that because of their size they're so so enormous
21:46i sort of think of them as almost like giant guinea pigs i'm actually allergic to guinea pigs and
21:51guinea pigs but not capybara so ah well that's handy for the procedure today you want to do him in
22:06four yeah okay cool this will be the first time darcy has hand injected carlos okay hi guys
22:15so i've got the hand injection for you i popped quite a big needle on here to get through the
22:19tough skin once he's down we just kind of get him comfortable pop him on an oxygen mask um
22:26and then we'll do his health check all right i'll give you that thank you
22:31good luck feeling a little bit nervous about it all i've only done one hand injection before with
22:37his brother pedro come on bud you can do it can come down he's a bit nervous i think he definitely
22:45knows something is happening can i grab a couple of the sweet potatoes to ensure carlos the capybara
22:52is kept calm try saying that fast three times darcy enters the enclosure completely alone to administer
22:59the injection sorry love all jacob and the rest of the team can do is wait go ahead i'm just coming
23:11out of the dentist i think i got it cool good job he's just received the injection which is really
23:18really great darcy did an amazing job now we're just sort of waiting for that medication to take an effect
23:23the injection a bit of improvisation a new spot for carlos but he did really well and it's not long
23:33before the sedative begins to take effect oh i got him he's falling over he's falling over yeah
23:41naomi shift to adelaide go ahead just letting you know carlos is lying down now
23:48that's good it's now time to transport this giant sleeping rodent so his checkup can begin one two
23:57three good job okay we'll bring him in now
24:04yep one three at taronga western plains zoo 18 year old sumatran tiger satu is safely back in his den
24:15after a successful trip to the dentist there we go i think his eye position's changed a bit
24:23he blinked so he's starting to rails that means it's now time for tiger number two
24:36sakji is 13 years old and recently keepers have noticed that he's just having a little bit of
24:41trouble eating and chewing when he eats his food a tiger's teeth aren't just for chewing they're also
24:47an important tool for socialization like playing which means they're used a lot they fight with one
24:54another or they just rough play with one another and then they bite um you know big logs for example
25:00and just day-to-day trauma all signs indicate that this tiger is going to need some serious dental
25:08work what a good good boy just how serious won't be known until he's sedated and in the wildlife hospital
25:19his procedure is going to be longer than sati and so we're going to have to be quite strict
25:25um about anesthetic right folks if we can get the stretch of carriers please
25:29on three one two three timeline we'd really like to be out in three and a half hours that's for his
25:38safety it's not the dental surgery the vet team are most concerned about one two three but rather
25:45the length of time the big cat is under anesthetic we're ready we can start yep you go and the side
25:53effects that can cause i'm just organizing myself to get ready to uh uh examination of his teeth
26:00the keepers thought that he might have some broken teeth so the first thing we're going to do is open
26:04his mouth and just see what's going on and then we'll work out a plan
26:10202 appears to be missing three is one all round with abrasion four one all round complicated crown
26:19fracture you can see the tooth is broken off it should be as long as the lower one um i think
26:25it's probably lost a good 15 millimeters on the distal buckle the dental work and the anesthetic time
26:35are adding up the other side is just as bad absolutely smashed and part of the crown is actually mobile
26:43in a small pocket of sydney bushland close to taronga
26:54porticulturist laura has returned to check a termite test trap she set a week ago it is a bit of a guessing
27:01game it is a little experimental we haven't done anything like this before laura is hoping to catch if not
27:0910 000 then at least a few hundred termites to help feed taronga's echidna residents
27:24all right all right enough of the suspense already what have we got it doesn't look like we've got any
27:31termites in here yet oh so this is the first time i've tried setting a trap i've had no luck today it
27:40is experimental but i'm quite certain with a few more goes we'll be able to capture some well it was
27:47a nice try laura so i might have better luck next time we've only had the trap set for about a week so
27:53it may take a little bit more time for them to move in and start eating the wood
27:58as the famous old saying goes if you can't catch termites in a park try a bit closer to home
28:08something like that so i'm just out here looking for some live termites for our echidnas
28:12enter keeper beck who joined laura on the termite trail back at taronga unfortunately our horticulture
28:20team didn't have any luck in the park maybe beck to might have better luck oh what a little too much
28:28okay i'll let it go
28:36i've just found this rotten log hoping there'd be some sort of live invertebrates in there
28:40here we go and i've just started ripping it up to see if there's anything in here yes the suspense
28:49there's other little bugs in there okay okay but are there any tasty little termites
28:55yes i've just found some termites finally termites in the house what a termite result
29:05sorry the echidnas are going to be very happy about this so they'll be very excited
29:10if they're half as excited as i am it's going to be fun times in the echidna habitat
29:15hello and stand back here they come
29:30they're really enjoying this as soon as i brought this in they all rushed over to have this yummy meal of termites you can see robbie here
29:44is getting right into that log so they're very very excited they're using their strong claws to rip open
29:50the log and then their beak to probe into the rotten areas their very long tongue which is about 18
29:56centimeters long to slurp up those termites and it's just amazing to watch them doing this natural behavior
30:02okay so just doing some quick maths two echidnas that means laura and beck only need to find 20 000
30:12more termites tomorrow oh good luck with that
30:19back at taronga's wildlife hospital in dubbo the other side's just as bad
30:24sumatran tiger sucked these teeth are much much worse than expected
30:36not a pleasant sight got lots going on lots fractured with a root retained yeah fractured with a pulp
30:44exposure uh-oh gets worse this fourth cream molar is totally fractured with a mobile
30:52roll around as well with the pulp exposed that would be really painful so there's a lot to do a lot
30:57to do the good news dental specialist david can help sakty the bad news it's probably about a six
31:05hour procedure all up and we don't want to keep him under anesthetic for that long ideally we want
31:10to be out of here in three and a half we don't like to keep our tigers or big cats under anesthetic for
31:14more about three and a half hours just because it are increased risk with their potassium levels with
31:19time against them the vet team need to prioritize the extractions are probably the best thing to do
31:25i agree because they're the most painful and also they've got all infections the countdown is on three
31:31hours to remove sakty's three worst teeth we'll just watch his blood pressure if his blood pressure's
31:36good we might be able to get away with it the first broken tooth all right roots coming out is removed
31:42in less than an hour yay got it okay so we've finished taking out the top tooth yeah so that's
31:49a good start good job the lower one i'm hoping won't take as long you know we haven't had a challenge
31:56like this for a while the second broken tooth is proving a lot more difficult got about five minutes
32:05until the three and a half hour mark and we need to take away some of the bone on the outside
32:10in order to take the tooth out come on here baby
32:21wow good job the second tooth is out sakty has now been anesthetized for three and a half hours the time
32:31limit they originally set themselves but they're far from finished has he still got another bad
32:36one on the other side yes we haven't started that one yet is he responding at all with that in
32:41like anesthesia wise he's happy potassium's 4.8 so we're in the danger zone if the tiger's blood
32:48potassium levels reach five the vet team will have to intervene what sort of time do you think on
32:56that other tooth david an hour at taronga's capybara habitat in sydney carlos is lying down now carlos
33:09the capybara has just received an anesthetic injection okay we'll bring him in now we're gonna
33:16bring in a stretcher because he weighs over 50 kilos good job six-year-old carlos is getting on a bit
33:25so much like those two tigers in dubbo he's due for a veterinary checkup we're going to bring him
33:32inside to the dens that way there's a little bit more privacy and it's a lot more quiet and calm
33:36so we can give him his health check there and then when he's recovering from the anesthetic he'll be
33:40able to sort of have a nice quiet area that he can wake up in and be nice and calm the capybara's
33:46health check should be quite quick but we might just pop a towel under there um his temperature is
33:5335.4 i'm just having a really good feel of um all of his joints and um of his feet as well just making
34:02sure all his digits are moving really well you may start to encounter some age-related health issues
34:11but everything feels really good all his joints feel good including all his little toes so far so
34:18good but the biggest issue for the largest rodent in the world is you guessed it those pearly whites
34:26i'm gonna have a look in his mouth and check all his teeth that's perfect yeah let's face it it's
34:32hard to miss those front chompers which for all rodents never stop growing but the back teeth
34:40are a different story just gonna have a look on this upper side compared to a tiger's massive jaw
34:47carlos's is a bit more crowded they do store a bit of food in their mouths makes it a bit trickier
34:54to properly properly see the teeth and so now that i've scraped that food out i can get a really
35:02good look and just make sure there's no hooks or spurs that might be causing him discomfort
35:13that looks good perfect his teeth look really good but no capybara dental exam is complete without
35:21checking on those hard to miss giant razor sharp four front teeth beautiful that's what we want to
35:30see yeah his front teeth are meeting perfectly definitely don't look like there's any problems
35:35we need to address i think we're done great okay reversal's been given yep thank you
35:43a little bit time to wake up carlos yeah relieved um he's you know getting older so it's just nice to
35:51know that everything is going well for him good boy and in no time at all carlos the capybara is up
35:59and about as if nothing ever happened he's bounced back really quickly more importantly our relationship
36:07hasn't changed after the hand injection i still have really great rapport with him he's still coming
36:12over for his training sessions really enthusiastically she's been really nice uh so really nice that
36:18the hand injection didn't impact that at all what was his potassium well it's trending out it's now 5.2
36:27meanwhile at the wildlife hospital in dubbo we're in the danger zone sumatran tiger sakti's dental
36:34surgery is running longer than the team hoped and has become quite complicated the general anesthetic has
36:42caused his blood potassium levels to rise dangerously high can you just keep your eyeballs
36:48on the ecg trace yes is your own oh his potassium has blown up vet elisa administers a medicated inhaler
36:57all right so he's had his puffs that can help bring his potassium down although sakti's time
37:02under anesthetic is now up dental specialist david must finish this last tooth to avoid complications
37:10such as ongoing pain or infection setting in we'll just do a temporary treatment on this tooth okay um
37:18so i've taken the piece of fractured tooth off and taken the nerve out of the tooth so it's now not going
37:24to be a sore and that should be fine for a few weeks to a month so david you're done we're done
37:31all right let's go the tiger's procedure is over at least for today there we go all right let's bring
37:38the stretcher in we'll come back in a couple of months once sakti's recovered from this anesthetic
37:43and we'll do another procedure where we do root canals on three of you the canine teeth one two three
37:48one two but as sakti is being moved okay jump in that middle butt he shows signs that his
37:57anesthetic is wearing off transporting an animal that's been under anesthetic for that long it is
38:02always a bit of a challenge fingers everyone for the intubation it's a very fine line managing the
38:08anesthetic of these dangerous animals concentrate on getting drugs if we need it the team need to keep
38:13him sedated until he is back in his habitat just giving him 10 mils of propofol so i've just had to
38:19give him some top-up drugs because he was getting a bit too light for our comfort levels but the top-up
38:24sedation comes with its own risks he's now not breathing
38:31quite often when animals are under anesthetic they stop breathing on their own it's quite common
38:36because especially if they've been under anesthetic for a long time while vet rebecca monitors his vitals
38:43vet nurse jody uses a reservoir bag to pass oxygen into sucked his lungs for some reason we're
38:52not getting a pulse rate why are we not getting a pulse rate
38:59you can hear a pulse bit i can't hear it you can't hear it
39:04vet katherine checks for a pulse it doesn't feel good huh adrenaline yeah yeah
39:15i can do all this adrenaline is used to stimulate and restart the tiger's heart
39:22so that adrenaline's in do you want me to jump up
39:28yeah do you jump up katherine i've got a heartbeat it's a heartbeat you got you got it now
39:33that feels heaps better now yeah
39:40much stronger 24. but we've got no spontaneous breaths no sakti needs to be breathing on his
39:50own before the team can return him to his den and safely remove his tube he's not breathing so that's
39:57not going to work
40:01next that rate's hundred it's one step forward it looks like he might be stabilizing
40:06this and two steps back for sakti pulse quality is not good can you listen to the heart while i do
40:12this yep
40:14we've got no spontaneous breaths at taronga western plains zoo sakti the sumatran tiger
40:22is in crisis he's not breathing so that's not going to work his heart stopped beating while under
40:27sedation i can't hear it it's now been restarted but the tiger still can't breathe on his own
40:37quite often the anesthetic depresses their respiratory system and we'll often have to
40:41ventilate for them i'll just keep him on three percent also just going a 70 70. yep so that's not
40:47too bad and so we were making sure that we were giving him enough oxygen through his system just
40:52keep bagging keep bagging all right it's now increasing it's going back to 73 82. it's getting
40:58faster 90. heart rate's 100. suddenly the tiger's heart starts beating erratically 122 here he's
41:10getting tachycardia heart rate's got an arrhythmia pulse quality is not good no it's gone into like a
41:16beta the fast irregular heart rate is a sign the tiger could go into cardiac arrest again just
41:24keep ventilating i think i'm stirring up another adrenaline his pulse is very erratic
41:31can you get some calcium gluconate yes 60 ml can you listen to the heart while i do this
41:36yeah any reflexes up there sakti's life is on a knife's edge he was central before not like this it's
41:47different
41:56rhythm's better it's a normal rhythm heart rate's 100. pulse feels better
42:02the combination of drugs will help stabilize his heart we've got spontaneous breathing he's
42:08spontaneous breathing it looks like he might be stabilizing so that's a nice regular rhythm
42:16his heart rate's nice and steady now it's a really good rhythm yeah color's better than it was it's not
42:22as good as it was but it's better than it was the best thing we can do for him is get him in there and
42:25get him off all the drugs yeah we have to wake him up guys we've we're gonna move him we've stabilized
42:33him more than he was he's not particularly stable anything can happen the sooner they give sakti the
42:40anesthesia reversal drug katherine's got the reversal the better his chances of a full recovery close to
42:48the door we'll just give him a half dose yeah ready for reversal yep
42:56it's now a waiting game to see if sakti wakes up
43:07come on dude come on buddy he certainly did give us a little bit of a fright on the way back today
43:12um especially after we'd invested so many hours into trying to give him a good bill of health and look
43:17after those teeth he stopped breathing and for a minute there we lost his heart and it looked a
43:22little bit dire for a while there we were all quite nervous um but when he took the breath on his own
43:28and started to wake up it was a huge relief for us all did you see that oh good morning
43:35so we're incredibly relieved that he's come through this well
43:39thankfully now he's stable he's recovering and i'm sure we'll have a good night's sleep tonight
43:53and the next morning just as the doctor ordered sakti is looking like his old self again though i don't
44:01think he or sakti will be racing back to the dentist anytime soon
