00:00This could be a piece of the treasure.
00:02Yes!
00:03Oh, Charles, we got wood.
00:05This is incredible.
00:07We could be within feet of our offset chamber.
00:10Doesn't that look like a vault to you?
00:12I would expect a lot of stuff down there.
00:14It's giving off metallic signals.
00:17Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:20There's something.
00:21Wow.
00:22What the heck is going on?
00:26There is an island in the North Atlantic
00:29where people have been looking for an incredible treasure
00:33for more than 200 years.
00:36So far, they have found a stone slab
00:39with strange symbols carved into it.
00:42Man-made workings that date to medieval times
00:45and a lead cross whose origin
00:48may be connected to the Knights Templar.
00:51To date, six men have died trying to solve the mystery.
00:56And according to legend,
00:59one more will have to die
01:02before the treasure can be found.
01:05You want to take that corner out?
01:18Sure.
01:19A week of great excitement has begun on Oak Island
01:23for brothers Rick and Marty Lagina,
01:25their partner Craig Tester, and their team.
01:31That looks like a stone road.
01:34Why don't you do one more right along here,
01:37but a little deeper?
01:38Okay.
01:39And that is because in the northern region
01:42of the triangle-shaped swamp,
01:44they have uncovered a new pair of man-made features
01:47that may be critical to solving a 230-year-old treasure mystery.
01:53One is a stone pathway.
01:56The other is some kind of small cellar or vault.
02:00We're seeing absolutely the same rock size.
02:03Yep.
02:04No gravel.
02:06If this were natural,
02:08we wouldn't have such a tight distribution of size.
02:10Mm-hmm.
02:11Gary, you want to come metal detect?
02:13Yeah.
02:14Coming over.
02:17Well, let's see if there's any metals in here.
02:20Oh!
02:21Is this pottery?
02:22Really?
02:23Or not?
02:24Yeah, it's pottery.
02:26All right.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Wow, that was impressive.
02:30That's definitely pottery.
02:32Any ideas?
02:33Well, we've got a pottery expert here, Lerd.
02:36Did I hear pottery?
02:38Yep.
02:39Yep.
02:40I predict that you'll have an assessment of that
02:43just on the basis of the pottery that I've seen so far.
02:49I mean, it's a refined earthenware.
02:521860, 70?
02:53Yeah.
02:54Interesting, though.
02:56So this is, like, easily Anthony Graves, right?
02:59Right.
03:03In 1857, a farmer named Anthony Graves
03:07purchased a majority of Oak Island
03:09and built his home just north of the swamp.
03:12While he was never an active participant
03:14in the searches for treasure that took place in the money pit,
03:18curiously, he was rumored to have found a large cache
03:21of Spanish silver coins somewhere on his property.
03:26That might be Anthony Graves, too, the feature.
03:30Yeah.
03:31I think we should take this opportunity to try to figure that out.
03:34Yeah.
03:35I agree.
03:36Okay, let's go for it, mate.
03:37All right.
03:38Here we go.
03:39Here we go.
03:40Is it possible that Anthony Graves may have found a location
03:43outside of the money pit area where another cache of treasure
03:45was hidden?
03:46And if so, might this brick and slate feature be related to that discovery?
03:51That is a great signal.
03:52Now it's iron.
03:53Here we go.
03:54That is a great signal.
03:55And quite a decent size chunk.
03:56We can see it.
03:57That is a great signal.
03:58It's a great place than a tin.
04:00Luke's River.
04:01If he could see theations, his betrayer, is not as far back as 1200 AD.
04:03There we go.
04:04Is it possible that Anthony Graves may have found a location
04:08outside of the money pit area where another cache of treasure was hidden?
04:11And if so, might this brick and slate feature be related to that discovery?
04:15That is a great signal.
04:20Now it's iron and quite a decent-sized chunk.
04:28It's in that area where your hand is.
04:32That's it.
04:34Let me get down there.
04:37You got it, Gary?
04:37Yeah.
04:39Let's see.
04:41When we went to the north side of the swamp,
04:43I didn't really expect to see much.
04:46And sure enough, as the dig proceeds,
04:49there's a square, vault-ish-looking thing
04:52that was submerged in the swamp.
04:54Purpose unknown.
04:56So was it a hiding place?
04:57Did Anthony Graves set it up himself to hide his own stuff in?
05:01That's what we hope to find out.
05:04It's coming out.
05:06Is that it?
05:08It had a big reveal.
05:09What the heck?
05:10I think that's it.
05:12The hell is that?
05:13Yeah.
05:14That is certainly not what I expected.
05:17Look at that.
05:18It's got something attached to it.
05:20That's a piece of brick, but a look of it.
05:23Yeah.
05:24Any ideas, Liv?
05:27But it's been down there for a long time.
05:28Yeah, it has.
05:30I think we have to go clean it off.
05:32But, I mean, it's a pipe of some sort.
05:34The question that we want to know, really,
05:35is how old is that thing?
05:37Yeah.
05:37We don't know what else is down there.
05:41We've got to get to the bottom of it.
05:42Yeah.
05:43That's the only way we're going to find out.
05:45Yep.
05:46All right.
05:47I'm going to take that back to the lab.
05:48Okay, mate.
05:49I'll let you get on with your work over there.
05:51Works for me.
05:52Okay, mate.
05:53Good work.
05:55While members of the team continue to investigate
05:58the mysterious structure in the swamp,
06:02later that afternoon...
06:04You know, I thank everybody for coming.
06:08So we have results today from shaft to the first shaft
06:12after the discovery of the Money Pit.
06:14Rick Lagina gathers with other members of the team
06:17in the War Room for a meeting via videoconference
06:20with Dr. Michael Pazarek,
06:23a professor of Earth Sciences at Brock University
06:26in St. Catharines, Ontario.
06:29If we could definitively find two,
06:34Steve, you can tell us,
06:36here's where the Money Pit should be.
06:37So shaft two is a...
06:40You know, it's the white whale, if you will.
06:44We're digging up the first ever searcher shaft
06:46on Oak Island.
06:47Earlier this year,
06:49the team unearthed a feature in the Money Pit area
06:52that they believed to be a 110-foot-deep
06:55searcher structure built in 1805
06:58that is known as Shaft 2.
07:01Located 14 feet southeast
07:03of the original treasure shaft,
07:05workers began tunneling
07:07from the bottom of Shaft 2
07:08toward the Money Pit,
07:10hoping to bypass the legendary flood tunnel
07:12and retrieve the believed treasure vault.
07:15But unfortunately,
07:18just two feet shy of their target,
07:20the tunnel was suddenly breached
07:22by a rush of seawater,
07:24forcing them to abandon the operation.
07:28Luckily, Mike Pazarek has been able to join our group
07:32and look at these samples.
07:35For the past several weeks,
07:38Professor Pazarek has been analyzing
07:40numerous wood samples from the structure
07:42using a testing method known as dendrochronology,
07:47a process by which the size and growth patterns
07:51of tree rings and wood
07:52can help determine the approximate date
07:54that it was cut for use in construction.
07:57It is the team's hope
07:59that the results will help them verify
08:02that they have indeed located Shaft 2,
08:05meaning that the original Money Pit
08:07would sit just 14 feet to the northwest.
08:11So, with that, Mike,
08:13if you can give them the results,
08:15we'd greatly appreciate it.
08:17Sure. Thanks, Craig.
08:19So, Shaft 2,
08:21I think the results are fairly robust.
08:23Now, sample 0021,
08:28I'm really, really confident
08:30in the dates on this particular sample.
08:33I determined a date of 1784.
08:37Wow.
08:39Yeah.
08:40If a 1784 date is relevant,
08:43that would be 21 years
08:45before the date of the construction of Shaft 2,
08:48so it may not be Shaft 2.
08:51What does that mean?
08:52What does that say?
08:52I don't know.
08:53But it's quite intriguing.
08:55If this is not wood from Shaft 2,
08:58then what do we think it's from?
09:02Logically, it almost suggests
09:04that this Shaft might be
09:06some early depositor work.
09:10The date is important
09:11because it may be reused wood.
09:14Possibly.
09:16Could Dr. Spooner be correct
09:18that the wood unearthed by the team
09:20in the Money Pit area
09:21may have been repurposed
09:23from a previously built structure
09:24and used by searchers
09:26to build Shaft 2 in 1805.
09:301784 date is somewhat confusing.
09:32And we can't say yay or nay
09:35that it is Shaft 2.
09:37On some level,
09:38that's both discouraging and encouraging.
09:41Encouraging because there's still a lot
09:43to learn about the Money Pit.
09:45Discouraging because there is still
09:47a whole lot to learn about the Money Pit.
09:49But from the position,
09:51it would appear that that is Shaft 2.
09:55Right?
09:55It has neither affirmed nor denied
09:58that it is Shaft 2.
09:59But it does represent
10:01new areas for investigation,
10:04and that's a very good thing.
10:05So let me just call it
10:06Shaft 2 question mark from the time being.
10:09I think a question mark is appropriate.
10:11Well, I think we start out with the drill.
10:13Yeah.
10:13See what comes up.
10:18So if we are going to call this Shaft 2,
10:21we can project 14 feet out.
10:24And now I project it off the western wall,
10:26so you can see my anchor point is right there.
10:29It lands on the southeast side
10:31of the head and shaft.
10:32If we are going to call this Shaft 2,
10:40we can project 14 feet out.
10:43It lands on the southeast side
10:46of the head and shaft.
10:47In the war room,
10:49after receiving data regarding
10:51a searcher structure built in 1805,
10:54known as Shaft 2,
10:56the Oak Island team is hopeful
10:58they may have finally located
11:00the original Money Pit.
11:02So if the Money Pit
11:04is mainly in the head and shaft,
11:07then you're back more
11:09to the traditional area
11:10of the Money Pit.
11:11Yeah.
11:12In 1937,
11:15New York-based treasure hunter
11:16Gilbert Hedden
11:17constructed a 12-by-24-foot shaft
11:20down to a depth of 125 feet,
11:24believing that he had found
11:25the location of the original Money Pit.
11:28Unfortunately,
11:29he was unable to recover
11:31any evidence of valuables.
11:34However,
11:35if the Oak Island team
11:36has indeed found Shaft 2,
11:39is it possible
11:39that Gilbert Hedden
11:41just missed the Money Pit,
11:43but they now have it pinpointed?
11:47So there's a 13-foot diameter
11:49proposed Money Pit location.
11:51I'd suggest to move
11:52into the southeast ahead
11:53and drilling there.
11:54Yeah,
11:56that's really interesting to us
11:57because that's the location
11:59for the Money Pit.
12:00That's where we also think
12:02the precious metals
12:02might be coming from.
12:04Yeah.
12:05In recent weeks,
12:07geoscientist Dr. Ian Spooner
12:09and his colleagues
12:10revealed that new
12:12groundwater testing data
12:13indicated that a large source
12:15of gold, silver,
12:17and other metals
12:18may be buried
12:19more than 100 feet deep
12:20in the general area
12:22of the Hedden Shaft.
12:23We know from all our work
12:25that there's so much underground
12:27in the Money Pit
12:28we don't know anything about.
12:29Could this offer more proof
12:31that the team
12:32has not only located Shaft 2,
12:34but now also
12:36the original Money Pit
12:37and the hiding place
12:39for the legendary treasure
12:40that people have been looking for
12:42since 1795?
12:43If it really is Shaft 2,
12:46that radii draws you to
12:49where we think
12:50the Money Pit should be
12:52based on everything
12:52we have come to understand.
12:54So this area needs
12:56further investigation
12:57with a hope
12:58that we will find
12:59the one thing
13:00that will prove
13:01all the efforts
13:03over the 230 years
13:04have been appropriate.
13:05So if there's anything
13:06that helps,
13:07we have a date range
13:08and we have a good survey
13:09on what we're calling
13:10Shaft 2,
13:11potentially Shaft 2.
13:12So now we know
13:13we're in a drill.
13:14I agree.
13:15We've got really good data.
13:18So thank you,
13:19Dr. Spooner.
13:20Thank you, Mike.
13:22We really appreciate it.
13:23Thank you again.
13:24Thank you, guys.
13:24Appreciate it.
13:25See ya.
13:26Following their meeting
13:27in the war room...
13:29We picked this borehole
13:30very strategically.
13:31Right.
13:32If that was Shaft 2,
13:33this potentially makes it
13:35a Money Pit
13:35or vault location.
13:36Yes.
13:37So we want to explore that?
13:38Yeah.
13:40Steve Guptill
13:40joins geologist
13:42Terry Matheson
13:43and Oak Island historian
13:44Charles Barkhouse
13:45in the Money Pit area
13:47to supervise the drilling
13:49of borehole H.5-10.5,
13:52a borehole located
13:54at the southern edge
13:55of the shaft
13:55that Gilbert
13:56hadn't constructed
13:57in 1937.
14:00We know this area
14:01is where the high metal
14:03showed up,
14:04which incidentally
14:05would mean
14:05that chapel
14:07and head
14:08and us
14:09were basically
14:10in the right spot.
14:12One thing we've learned
14:13here in the Money Pit area
14:14is that anything
14:15is possible.
14:16Yeah.
14:16So it's quite possible
14:18that we could be
14:19onto something right here.
14:20Yeah.
14:20Sounds good.
14:21See what all this means.
14:23As the drilling operation
14:25continues
14:25in the Money Pit area...
14:27There it is, though.
14:30After you.
14:30Wow.
14:31Rick Lagina
14:32leads fellow
14:33Oak Island landowner
14:34Tom Nolan
14:35to the mysterious
14:36vault-like structure
14:37that was recently uncovered
14:39in the northern region
14:40of the triangle-shaped swamp.
14:43What do you think?
14:45I don't know what to say.
14:46I've never seen
14:48anything like this.
14:49Mm-hmm.
14:50I mean, look at that slate.
14:51It's perfectly cut.
14:52Yeah.
14:54I don't want to keep fishing.
14:57So many brick in the bottom.
14:59piece of glass.
15:09And that's...
15:10See a date on that?
15:12There's some marks on it,
15:13but there's no date.
15:14Hello.
15:16Hey there.
15:17We came up with that.
15:18Interesting.
15:20It's sharp.
15:20Okay.
15:21It's machine-made.
15:23It would be a...
15:25Jar?
15:26The late 1800s.
15:28Mm-hmm.
15:28Yeah.
15:29Yeah.
15:30So it somewhat fit
15:32with Anthony Graves.
15:33Oh, I think it fits quite well.
15:35Yeah.
15:36If Laird is correct
15:37that this glass fragment
15:39may be associated
15:40with the 19th century landowner
15:42Anthony Graves,
15:43could it offer evidence
15:45that he created this feature
15:47in order to hide
15:48the Spanish silver
15:49that he was rumored
15:50to have possessed?
15:52Or could it be a clue
15:54that this is actually
15:55where he discovered
15:56the riches?
15:57What did you think of this?
16:00It doesn't look like
16:01anything we've ever found here.
16:03I mean, there was nothing here
16:05after Graves left
16:06that we know of.
16:07Over the years,
16:08we've located two wells
16:09in the property,
16:10which we assume were Graves.
16:12This is different.
16:13It's square.
16:15It's not round.
16:16It's slate and brick.
16:17It's not beach stone.
16:18I mean, it just,
16:20it doesn't fit.
16:22Yeah, I'm going to take
16:23the treasure hunting component
16:25and run with that.
16:26I mean, Anthony Graves
16:29was the real mystery man
16:30of Oak Island to me.
16:32Doesn't that look like
16:32a vault to you?
16:34I mean, it's constructed
16:35like a vault.
16:36And I guess if you're
16:38trying to hide something,
16:39but you want to be able
16:40to recover it,
16:42rather than putting it
16:43in an outhouse,
16:44you'd put it at the bottom
16:45of something like this.
16:46Easily retrievable?
16:47Yeah.
16:48Yeah.
16:48Easily hidden?
16:49Well, hidden's a good word
16:50because, I mean,
16:51we've been taking this bog apart
16:53since the 70s
16:54and never, never found this, so.
16:57I think the answers,
16:58unfortunately,
16:58are probably at the bottom.
17:00Katya, you want to come in
17:01and just swing a metal detector
17:03in the bottom here?
17:04Try my best.
17:16Not getting anything.
17:18Anything down
17:19in the well itself?
17:22A little something.
17:23There's little blips
17:31and bleeps.
17:32It's...
17:33There's something in there.
17:38I remain convinced
17:40that this square-shaped box
17:42is a place to store metal.
17:47The bricks on top
17:48make it appear
17:48as though there was
17:49a wooden cover over it.
17:51It's in close proximity
17:53to Anthony Graves' home,
17:55and you throw
17:56the historical narrative
17:57into it
17:57that he paid
17:58with Spanish coin.
17:59To me,
18:00it just makes no sense
18:02other than
18:03it's a structure
18:04built to contain something
18:07and, I believe,
18:08to hide something.
18:08There's a lot of brick
18:14down here.
18:22It's a very hard bottom.
18:27There's something.
18:30What is that?
18:30What is that?
18:36I see.
18:36I don't know.
18:41That's odd.
18:41In the northern region
18:43of the Oak Island Swamp,
18:45Rick Lagina
18:46and other members
18:47of the team
18:48have just found
18:49a potentially important clue
18:51inside of a mysterious
18:53vault-like structure.
18:54I just can't place
18:56what it is.
18:57Handle?
18:58The handle of the chest.
19:00What a cool find.
19:02Could Rick Lagina
19:03be correct
19:03that the team
19:04has recovered
19:05a handle from a chest
19:06inside of the vault-like feature?
19:09If so,
19:11might it be related
19:11to the Spanish silver coins
19:13that former landowner
19:15Anthony Graves
19:16reportedly discovered
19:17on Oak Island
19:18more than 150 years ago?
19:21Geez.
19:22The question is,
19:22what else is there to find?
19:24This is such a weird structure.
19:26It poses a lot of questions.
19:28We need to excavate this
19:30and see what is
19:31at the bottom of it.
19:32So,
19:33we should do that right away.
19:34Laird,
19:35why don't you come up
19:35with a process
19:36of how we can proceed
19:37to find the area
19:39and how deep
19:40you want to dig?
19:41Yep.
19:41And let's get it done.
19:42Sounds good.
19:44Okie doke.
19:48The following morning,
19:50here we go.
19:52Patient on the table.
19:54We're in with
19:54a solid section
19:55of maroon till.
19:57Oh, yeah.
19:58Look at that.
19:58Yeah.
19:59As search efforts
20:00in the Money Pit area
20:01and the swamp continue,
20:04on Lot 5,
20:06located on the western side
20:08of Oak Island.
20:10Wow.
20:11The rock wall's
20:12really starting to pop.
20:14It is.
20:15And, you know,
20:15we're still pretty high up.
20:17Mm-hmm.
20:18Jack Begley
20:18has joined the archaeology team
20:20as they continue
20:21investigating
20:22a large,
20:23rounded stone foundation
20:24near the shoreline.
20:26So,
20:27it's still
20:28a little ambiguous
20:29as to exactly
20:30where it's going.
20:31Since acquiring Lot 5
20:34from the estate
20:35of the late treasure hunter
20:36Robert Young
20:36in 2022,
20:39the Laginas,
20:40Craig Tester,
20:41and their team
20:41have been working
20:43under provincial
20:43archaeological guidelines
20:45to fully uncover
20:46this structure.
20:48And so far,
20:49they've made
20:50numerous discoveries
20:51that suggest
20:51it is connected
20:53to the treasure mystery.
20:54These include coins
20:56and Venetian trade beads
20:57dating back
20:58to the 17th century
21:00or earlier.
21:02Handmade bricks
21:02resembling those
21:04that make up
21:05the vault-like feature
21:06in the swamp.
21:07And a mortar-like substance
21:08that matches soil samples
21:10collected from over
21:11100 feet deep
21:13in the Money Pit area.
21:14I have a love-hate
21:16relationship
21:16with Lot 5.
21:18What I hate
21:19is the pace
21:20of exploring it.
21:21It drives me mad.
21:24I mean,
21:24it is so slow.
21:26But I love the fact
21:27that it could help
21:28our search
21:28by tying
21:30what happened there
21:31to the Money Pit.
21:32We're hoping
21:33that something
21:33on Lot 5
21:34helps us solve
21:35the whole mystery here.
21:39Hey, Fiona.
21:40Yeah?
21:40You're coming down
21:41on something.
21:43Oh, that looks like
21:44one of the Robert Young pegs.
21:46Is there a number on it?
21:46Yeah, there is.
21:475-0-2-5.
21:49That's really cool.
21:51Well, look at that.
21:53So it does.
21:54Hey, Jack.
21:54Yeah?
21:55Look what we've got here.
21:56Between 1996
21:58and his death
21:59in 2020,
22:02Lot 5's previous owner,
22:03Robert Young,
22:04made a number of discoveries
22:05across the property,
22:08including iron tools
22:09and even medieval coins.
22:12He marked each find
22:13with labeled pegs.
22:15The question now is,
22:16just what did he unearth
22:18near the round feature?
22:19Laird actually has access
22:22to the database
22:23because every single number
22:25is associated
22:26with whatever he found.
22:27Nice.
22:28I'll have to give Laird a call.
22:29I think that's perfect.
22:32I love that we can get
22:33that instrument
22:33for a mission
22:34just like that.
22:36Hey, Jack.
22:37How's it going, Laird?
22:39Good.
22:39How are you?
22:40Um, actually,
22:41quite good.
22:42Well, I'm digging
22:43with Fiona and Ethan
22:44just to the north,
22:45the circular feature,
22:47and we came across
22:49a Robert Young peg.
22:51It has a number on it,
22:53and I was wondering
22:53if you could look up
22:54in the database
22:55what Robert Young had found.
22:58Yeah.
22:59Okay, what's the number?
23:015025.
23:02Okay.
23:03Just give me a second.
23:04Yep.
23:06Ah, so it matches
23:08the 1781 Spanish
23:11half-real, the silver.
23:13Yes.
23:14Wow.
23:15It was the only Spanish
23:17coin he found,
23:18which is significant.
23:19Thank you, Laird.
23:20We'll give you a call
23:21if we find anything else.
23:23All right, Jack.
23:24Great.
23:25See you, Laird.
23:27That's great,
23:28because that also
23:28makes me think
23:30about Anthony Graves,
23:31the fact that
23:32there are stories
23:33of him going into
23:34one of the local stores
23:35and spending
23:36Spanish reals.
23:38Definitely could
23:39fit in with that idea.
23:40Yeah.
23:41Could Fiona Steele
23:43be correct
23:43that an 18th-century
23:45Spanish real
23:46discovered by Robert Young
23:48in the round feature
23:49on Lot 5
23:50might have been related
23:51to the Spanish silver coins
23:53that Anthony Graves
23:54was rumored
23:55to have found?
23:57If so,
23:58could that mean
23:59that the round feature
24:00is not only related
24:02to the vault
24:02in the swamp,
24:03but also
24:04a vast cache
24:05of treasure
24:06that lies buried
24:07deep in the money pit?
24:08I'm super excited
24:10about this
24:11because this could be
24:12a piece of treasure.
24:13Like, honestly,
24:15that's shocking.
24:16Yeah.
24:17We have to dig deeper.
24:19We've got to see
24:19if there's more.
24:20Definitely.
24:21While the search
24:22for clues and valuables
24:23continues on Lot 5...
24:25Here comes another one.
24:27Okay, here goes another one.
24:31Okay, here we are.
24:32Let's hope it's a good one.
24:33In the money pit area,
24:35Charles Barkhouse
24:36and Terry Matheson
24:37continue monitoring
24:39the drilling operation
24:40in borehole H.5-10.5,
24:43a borehole
24:44that the team hopes
24:45could be located
24:46within the original money pit.
24:49When you put a drill
24:52over a location,
24:54the number one hope
24:55is you'll Bravo tango something.
24:58It's like a fault,
24:59but at the very least,
25:01you're always looking
25:02for information.
25:04Okay, Charles,
25:04it's about 146 here.
25:07Oh, Charles,
25:08we got wood.
25:09Check this out.
25:11This is incredible.
25:12I'm seeing some serious
25:14chunks and slivers.
25:15The more you dig here,
25:16Charles,
25:16the more you get.
25:17Yeah.
25:17That's one, two,
25:18three, four.
25:20That's like five
25:20fairly large chunks
25:22and slivers of wood.
25:23There's another one there.
25:25Yeah.
25:25Right there.
25:26Okay, that's what
25:27I'm talking about.
25:29Wow.
25:30You know,
25:31in the cores we had
25:31above this,
25:32between 124 and 139,
25:35we didn't see any wood at all.
25:36This is 22 feet
25:38below the bottom
25:39of the head and shaft.
25:40Oh, I know, I know.
25:41In a place
25:42where it should not be,
25:43the question is,
25:44how the heck
25:44did it get there?
25:45That's a very good
25:48question, Terry.
25:51I'm seeing some
25:52serious chunks
25:53and slivers of wood.
25:55So this is what
25:56we've been looking for.
25:58Yeah.
25:59The question is,
25:59how the heck
26:00did it get there?
26:01While drilling a borehole
26:03known as H.5-10.5
26:05in search of
26:06the original money pit,
26:08members of the
26:08Oak Island team
26:09have just encountered
26:10a mysterious wooden structure
26:12nearly 150 feet
26:14below ground.
26:16Wood at this level
26:17is incredible.
26:18I mean, no question,
26:19we're 20 feet below
26:20the head and shaft
26:21and Hamilton
26:22hit wood below
26:23the bottom of
26:25the head and shaft.
26:26Exactly.
26:27I think we may have hit
26:29what Hamilton hit
26:30in the early 40s.
26:33In the summer of 1940,
26:35New York University
26:36professor and treasure hunter
26:38Erwin Hamilton
26:39constructed a 6-by-6-foot
26:41extension onto the base
26:43of the head and shaft.
26:44While conducting
26:45a drilling operation
26:46from within
26:47the so-called
26:48Hamilton extension,
26:50he and his team
26:51were stunned
26:52when they intercepted
26:53a mysterious wooden
26:54structure
26:55at a depth
26:56of 153 feet.
26:59Was he looking
26:59for the vault?
27:01You know,
27:01something drew him here.
27:03Yeah.
27:03This is very,
27:04very loose
27:05and almost disturbed.
27:06It could be
27:07a treasure vault
27:07left or right
27:08at this exact point
27:09that we're drilling
27:09in here right now.
27:10The actual treasure vault
27:14could be within
27:15a matter of feet
27:15from this point
27:16right here.
27:17It's certainly
27:17possible, Terry.
27:19Is it possible
27:19that the Oak Island
27:20team has now
27:22encountered
27:22that same structure?
27:24And if so,
27:25could it be
27:26the legendary
27:27chapel vault?
27:29We're going to carry
27:29on below this point.
27:30173, you said?
27:38Yep.
27:40What do you got,
27:41lady?
27:42173.
27:43173.
27:51That's pretty much
27:52in situ.
27:53You can see
27:53beautiful bedding there.
27:54And that is what
27:55we would expect to see.
27:57That's over 10 feet
27:58of solid material.
28:00This hole is over.
28:03Because the coring drill
28:05is now only recovering
28:07in situ
28:07or undisturbed soils,
28:09that means
28:10they have found
28:11no more evidence
28:12of man-made workings.
28:14However,
28:15because they did encounter
28:16a mysterious wooden structure
28:18at nearly 150 feet
28:20that may be
28:21the elusive chapel vault,
28:23could that mean
28:24that they are just
28:25mere feet
28:25from recovering
28:26the fabled treasure?
28:28Somebody was down
28:30in that money pit
28:31well before 1795.
28:33Maybe more than one
28:34somebody,
28:35maybe somebodies.
28:36Depositors,
28:37prior searchers.
28:39It means that something
28:40really did happen.
28:42We have been searching
28:43for this for years.
28:45This area needs to be searched
28:46further.
28:47We have to confirm
28:48and then we have to try
28:50to understand
28:51what shaft or shafts,
28:53what tunnel or tunnels
28:54would have reached
28:55those depths
28:56during what period
28:58of possible search
28:59and possible original work.
29:01We do know
29:02that precious metals
29:03are coming from somewhere.
29:05It's a complex story
29:06that's being woven here.
29:08We've drilled
29:09and drilled
29:09and finally
29:10we've contacted
29:10something.
29:11Yeah.
29:11Let's identify
29:12another target
29:13and then we'll move on.
29:18Later that afternoon...
29:22Hey, guys.
29:23Hey, Tom.
29:24Wow.
29:25You can see it more today
29:26than yesterday.
29:27Yeah.
29:28In the northern region
29:29of the swamp,
29:31Rick Lagina,
29:32his nephew Alex,
29:33Craig Tester,
29:34and other members
29:35of the team
29:35have uncovered
29:36more of a mysterious
29:37brick and slate container.
29:40Over here,
29:41it seems to be
29:42surrounded by rocks.
29:43A container
29:43that may have been created
29:45in order to hide
29:46something of great value.
29:48Those are all
29:48seemingly placed together
29:50deliberately.
29:56God, you want to come over
29:57and do a little better scan?
29:59Now that the feature
30:00has been partially
30:01drained of water,
30:02it is the team's hope
30:04that metal detection expert
30:05Katja Drayden
30:06can find important clues
30:08as to what it was
30:09designed to contain
30:10and also, perhaps,
30:12help identify
30:13just who created it.
30:17That is about eight inches.
30:21There's something
30:22down eight inches?
30:24It's looking like it.
30:27Then there's a short signal
30:29right over here.
30:32I definitely think
30:32there's something in here.
30:35Hmm.
30:37The brick inside,
30:39it's giving off
30:40metallic signals,
30:41so it just brings up
30:42a whole new question
30:43of what's in there.
30:44Mm-hmm.
30:45Yeah.
30:47It's odd.
30:49We don't know
30:50until we fully drain it.
30:51Yeah.
30:52We'll get a shop vac.
30:53Get it drained out
30:54and have a look.
30:55Okay.
30:56You want to scoop
30:56this side out?
30:57Yep.
31:01I'll get the shop vac.
31:03Certainly.
31:04I always believed
31:05that there were
31:06some answers
31:07in the bog.
31:08To find these features,
31:10it affirms
31:11our belief
31:12that there are
31:13answers here.
31:15They just have to be
31:16ferreted out
31:17and try to understand
31:18what they mean.
31:20You want to get after it?
31:33Well, they flop.
31:35Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
31:37Whoa.
31:39What the hell?
31:41Okay, here's something.
31:45What's that?
31:49Okay, here's something.
31:53What's that?
31:55They're stuck way under the hook.
32:01Looks like wrought iron, maybe.
32:03Yeah.
32:04While investigating,
32:06the mysterious vault-like structure
32:07in the northern region
32:09of the Oak Island Swamp.
32:11I don't think it's a pry bar.
32:13No.
32:14You can see the striations in it.
32:16Yep.
32:17Rick Lagina
32:18and other members of the team
32:19have just discovered
32:21a potentially important clue.
32:24What do you think of that?
32:26Is that a hook?
32:27It's a hook, yeah.
32:29Almost something you could have used
32:30sort of if you were
32:31raising or lowering something in.
32:33Yeah, for hoisting something out
32:34that you want to leave
32:35down there, right?
32:36Unless you're, you know,
32:37retrieving something
32:38that's down in there, right?
32:39Yeah.
32:41A possible hook?
32:43Could Billy and Tom be correct
32:45that this iron hook
32:46may have been used
32:47to place or retrieve
32:49something from the brick
32:50and slate structure
32:51which was hidden beneath
32:53the muck and water
32:54of the swamp?
32:54If you've got a rope on one end
32:56rope on the other
32:58it's old
32:59for sure.
33:01Yeah.
33:02If so
33:03was it used by
33:0419th century landowner
33:06Anthony Graves
33:07to hide a cache
33:08of Spanish silver coins
33:09that he reportedly found
33:11on Oak Island?
33:12Or could it have been left here
33:14by someone
33:14many years earlier
33:16who created a vault
33:17in order to hide
33:18Spanish treasure
33:19in the triangle-shaped swamp?
33:22Let's start it up.
33:25The hook's quite interesting.
33:27Certainly it looks like
33:28wrought iron
33:29meaning it could be quite old.
33:31It looks like
33:32something could hang off of it
33:33but certainly Emmett
33:35needs to do
33:36a metallurgical analysis
33:37of it.
33:39That's pretty much
33:40all I can feel
33:40on there
33:41is that one metal piece
33:42and that's it.
33:44The hope is
33:45that we can actually
33:46really define
33:47what this feature represents
33:49in terms of a timeline.
33:51Was this built
33:52by Anthony Graves
33:53to safeguard
33:54subsurface treasure
33:56that he found
33:56or does it
33:58represent something else?
34:00Well, I mean
34:01if it is Graves' work
34:03and he did use it
34:04as a hiding place
34:05it was a pretty good one.
34:07You know
34:08hope springs eternal
34:10but for this evening
34:11I think we're done.
34:13Yeah.
34:13Right.
34:14We'll let Emma
34:14do her work
34:15and it was a great day
34:17a dirty day
34:18and we all need
34:18to go clean up
34:19and get ready
34:20for tomorrow.
34:21Yep.
34:21Let's do it.
34:26The following afternoon
34:28I want to thank you
34:30Emma and Leric
34:31for inviting us down
34:32everyone knows
34:33my fascination
34:34with the swamp.
34:35Mm-hmm.
34:36You know
34:36we did extensive work there
34:38and found the three items
34:40here in front of us.
34:42Rick Lagina
34:42and members of the team
34:44join archaeologist
34:45Laird Niven
34:46and archaeometallurgist
34:47Emma Culligan
34:48in the Oak Island Laboratory.
34:50What are these things?
34:53The who, what,
34:53when, where, why, and how.
34:54Mm-hmm.
34:55Right.
34:55After the recent discoveries
34:58of a mysterious metal pipe,
35:00a handle,
35:01and a believed hook
35:02inside of the possible vault
35:04in the northern region
35:05of the swamp,
35:07Laird and Emma
35:07have completed
35:08preliminary scientific analysis
35:10on them.
35:11So yeah,
35:12I've done XRS
35:13on all three artifacts.
35:16Right.
35:16So with the handle,
35:19it is encrusted.
35:20So I did take a CT scan
35:23just to make sure.
35:25Prior to their meeting,
35:27Emma scanned
35:28all three objects
35:29using an X-ray
35:30fluorescence spectrometer
35:31or XRF.
35:33This device works
35:34by emitting
35:35non-destructive radiation
35:36that can identify
35:37an object's composition.
35:40Additionally,
35:41she scanned
35:42the handle-shaped artifact
35:43using the SkyScan 1273
35:45CT scanner,
35:47which emits
35:48X-ray radiation
35:49to produce magnified
35:50three-dimensional images
35:52of artifacts
35:52and their finer details.
35:55When you look
35:56at the handle,
35:58you do see
35:58the wood grain-like structures,
36:00which is run iron.
36:02Let me go to the CT.
36:04And you do see
36:05that grain-like structure
36:07on the handle.
36:09Right here,
36:09you can see it as well.
36:11The square hole,
36:12to me,
36:13implies you're moving
36:14something else.
36:15Yeah.
36:16Yes.
36:17I think it's a crank.
36:18Yeah, it is.
36:19I agree.
36:20I mean,
36:21when you look
36:21at this section
36:23over here,
36:23you can see
36:24just where
36:24the wood handle
36:25would have ended.
36:26Yeah.
36:27Based on the metallurgy,
36:28I can narrow down
36:29a possible date range.
36:31So,
36:32the hook
36:33in the center there,
36:34it does have
36:35a slight manganese content.
36:37So,
36:37that one
36:38kind of fits
36:39more towards
36:39the early
36:40to mid-1800s.
36:42Yeah,
36:43so,
36:43Anthony Graves
36:44was on the property
36:45in the mid-1800s.
36:48He died in 1888.
36:50But,
36:51the pipe
36:52and the crank handle,
36:55they're definitely
36:56late 1700s.
36:59That's before
37:00we have a record
37:02of Anthony Graves
37:03on that lot.
37:05So,
37:05right now,
37:06we're looking at
37:06a feature
37:07and artifacts
37:08that predate
37:09the recorded
37:11Anthony Graves
37:12occupation
37:12of that lot.
37:14Interesting.
37:15Yeah.
37:21The feature itself
37:22is even earlier
37:23than these artifacts.
37:26And,
37:26you know,
37:26I'm a treasure skeptic.
37:28Right?
37:29If it's a hiding place,
37:30you certainly
37:31can't dismiss that.
37:32Yeah.
37:33In the Oak Island
37:35Laboratory,
37:36Rick Lagina,
37:37crank tester,
37:38and members
37:38of the team
37:39have just been
37:40informed by
37:41Emma Culligan
37:41and Laird Niven
37:42that a metal pipe
37:44and handle
37:44that were found
37:46in a possible vault
37:47at the northern
37:47point of the swamp
37:49could date back
37:50to the late 1700s.
37:52That means
37:53that the believed vault
37:54may have been created
37:55prior to the discovery
37:57of the money pit.
37:59You certainly
38:00have a hint
38:01of some sort
38:02of secret.
38:03Right.
38:04It's curious enough.
38:05I'm quite interested
38:07in it because
38:08I've said many times
38:09to me,
38:10the mystery person
38:12of Oak Island
38:12is Anthony Graves.
38:14Right.
38:15Pays a Spanish coin
38:16and lives his life
38:18rather secretively.
38:20Yeah.
38:21Is it possible
38:22that the team
38:23has uncovered
38:24a treasure vault
38:25in the swamp
38:26where former
38:27Oak Island landowner
38:28Anthony Graves
38:29reportedly discovered
38:30Spanish silver coins
38:32more than 150 years ago?
38:35If so,
38:36then who created it?
38:38And what else
38:39might be buried
38:39deeper within it?
38:42The strangest thing
38:44of all
38:44is Anthony Graves.
38:45he positions his house
38:48in the lowest part
38:49of the island,
38:50right?
38:51And the only explanation
38:53is he watched
38:55the open ocean
38:56on two cardinal directions.
38:59He protects the back way
39:00to the money pit
39:01and he is close
39:04and he is close to possibly
39:04where his treasure lies.
39:08Which his children
39:09suspected.
39:10Which his children
39:10indeed suspected.
39:12Yeah.
39:13I think that would have been
39:13the perfect spot
39:14and I think there was
39:16something very important
39:17to him in that.
39:18I'm hoping that it's
39:19some sort of vault
39:20but I hope to find
39:22a little more.
39:23We all would.
39:25If Rick and the team's
39:27notion is correct
39:28that the brick and slate
39:30feature was a hiding place
39:31used by Anthony Graves
39:33to protect his rumored
39:34Spanish treasure,
39:36is it possible
39:37that it could be connected
39:39to the 1781
39:40silver Spanish real
39:42found by Robert Young
39:43on Lot 5?
39:44There's a purpose
39:47to this feature.
39:48I think it has to do
39:49with Anthony Graves.
39:51I think it was
39:52his safety deposit box.
39:54We know there was
39:54a Spanish coin
39:55that was found
39:56on Lot 5
39:57and then there's
39:59the story of
39:59Anthony Graves
40:00using Spanish coin
40:02as his currency
40:04to buy his goods.
40:06So I think we need
40:07to do more work
40:09in the swamp.
40:11So there's all kinds
40:12of reasons
40:13to try to
40:14further our understanding
40:15here in my opinion
40:16and what is it,
40:18who built it,
40:19when was it built,
40:19why was it built,
40:20right?
40:21I know you're not
40:22a big fan of the bog,
40:23but...
40:24I'm trying to find
40:25this treasure.
40:25Sometimes you've
40:26got to get dirty.
40:27I'm willing to do it.
40:28It's in your blood now.
40:30Mm-hmm.
40:31Alrighty, well,
40:32again, thank you.
40:33We'll go find you
40:34some more curiosities.
40:36Excellent.
40:37Hopefully next time
40:38we'll all have some answers.
40:40See you later.
40:40For 230 years,
40:45people have been
40:47trying to recover
40:48a vault of untold riches
40:50in the money pit.
40:51And while the clues suggest
40:53that something
40:54of great value
40:55remains hidden there
40:56deep below,
40:59Rick,
41:00Marty,
41:01Craig,
41:01and their team
41:02have discovered evidence
41:04that treasure
41:05may lie hidden
41:06all across Oak Island.
41:10Now,
41:11as the intrigue
41:12of this mystery
41:13grows richer,
41:14the fellowship
41:15of the dig
41:16may be closing in
41:18on rewards
41:19that will be greater
41:20than they ever
41:21imagined.
41:25Next time
41:26on The Curse of Oak Island...
41:28This is the perfect size
41:29for a treasure chest.
41:30There's something there.
41:31We'll find it.
41:33We found something already.
41:34The presence of arsenic
41:36could push the date
41:37back to the 1600s.
41:39Wow.
41:40It got loose
41:41halfway through that run.
41:42Can we be in a void?
41:43Yeah.
41:43That's tantalizing.
41:44We could be heading
41:45through a treasure zone
41:46right now.
41:47Absolutely.
41:48I'm gonna propose
41:49we put a caisson
41:50right there.
41:51Let the caissons roll in.
41:52Proceed.
41:52Let's go.
41:53Let the caissons roll in.
41:55Let the caissons roll in.
41:56Let the caissons roll in.
41:57Let the caissons roll in.
41:58Let the caissons roll in.
41:59Let the caissons roll in.
42:00Let the caissons roll in.
42:01Let the caissons roll in.
42:02Let the caissons roll in.
42:03Let the caissons roll in.
42:04Let the caissons roll in.
42:05Let the caissons roll in.
42:06Let the caissons roll in.
42:07Let the caissons roll in.
42:08Let the caissons roll in.
42:09Let the caissons roll in.
42:10Let the caissons roll in.
42:11Let the caissons roll in.
42:12Let the caissons roll in.
42:13Let the caissons roll in.
42:14Let the caissons roll in.
42:15Let the caissons roll in.
