00:01Hello, who are you?
00:02Maurice Gibbons.
00:03You're an excited big advisor.
00:05In this episode, we've got Lenny Rush.
00:08He's a genius, so the complete opposite of me.
00:13Did you spot it or miss it?
00:15We've got the full reveal on Susan Triad.
00:17It's tapping into a very old part of Doctor Who,
00:20which is the Doctor's pram, Doctor Seust.
00:23We've got the heated return of Unit.
00:25Darling, it's very hot and sweaty.
00:27It is too much.
00:28That is the Vlynx.
00:31We've got an interview with the Vlynx.
00:33There's a real man in there.
00:34And spoiler alert, we've got an exclusive clip
00:37from the season-ending finale.
00:39Welcome to Doctor Who Unleashed.
00:42Sally and Connor.
00:43Oh my God.
00:45Give me the loving!
00:47Maybe they won't leave it.
00:49Okay.
00:54Give me the loving!
00:55Haha!
00:56So we're back on the set of Unit, for quite a big day here in the gegay video,
01:00unit for quite a a big day here in the whole universe because this is the
01:03opening scene of episode 7 but because we're filming 7 and 8 at the same time
01:09this is basically the start of the end of the series so there's a real fun
01:15atmosphere and so this is it this is it this is it yeah and you're very close
01:20into a long time on a beach somewhere I am it's also really hot this is June
01:25it's wet you can probably hear that fan in the background people are stripping
01:28layers off darling it's very hot and sweaty it here's too much just to start
01:34at the end then you get to know where we have is that when you feel about that
01:37it's exciting it's exciting to get to the finale because it wraps up the whole
01:42season obviously it's like the most heightened action but like you you gain
01:47all the answers that you've been asking questions for throughout the whole season
01:51what what is it what
01:53what okay Susan try out it genius and today she's releasing her software free
02:02of charge worldwide a gift from s triad technology it's exciting to get into
02:09this moment where like the climax is the climax don't you see it is an anagram s
02:14triad spells TARDIS quite like an ensemble cast for this one isn't it is that fun yeah no it's
02:22very fun it's very fun having everyone in because obviously it's not only just me and Millie and so
02:27like when you get a gang and it's very lively I hope every time we come here there'll be a revolving
02:36star for new people and new faces and old familiar faces in about 10 years time the whole place be
02:41packed with recurring actors piling up on all the tests the bonnie lamp you go what about me all right
02:47bonnie come in come in come in come in so that's the plan the ensemble is a mix of new characters and
02:52familiar faces we last saw rose noble played by yasmin finney in the 60th anniversary specials
02:59I want to go home yeah I know that feeling the last time we were here on this set it was a
03:07different doctor this time of course in his shooting you know each other anyway what's it
03:11been like to work together it's been really fab yeah because it's my first time seeing him as the
03:16doctor and I'm shocked I love it I think it's fab and is it weird seeing him as the doctor as a
03:21book because you know you're used to him as shooting and now he's the doctor I always knew he was like
03:25even in you know when I met him the first time I knew he'd be like something big like it's just
03:30obvious he's so talented and he's so vibrant and yeah I'm just really blessed to be a part of his
03:35world the last time we saw Kate Lethbridge Stewart was in 73 yards go go go do not talk to her do not
03:43look her in the eyes do not engage with her in any way just bring her in Gemma's back today Gemma was
03:48here on my first day of filming and she's back now and it's fantastic to have her positions helipad doors
03:54Jerome Gemma I'm actually quite jealous of your fan that's very good isn't it it's always good to
04:00have one fan yeah I suppose your episodes do tend to have those ensemble moments in it with lots of
04:05different characters you can you can bounce off the other actors and things do you enjoy that I do
04:10it's lovely I'm part of a team and I mean acting as a team sport anyway sorry I didn't get your name
04:17parents Harriet new to who is Genesis linear this is an episode it's a big sort of ensemble cast there's
04:24there's loads of you do you like those sorts of you know episodes instead rather than sometimes it
04:29was just you on your own moving one other person yeah it does get quite lonely and also you know
04:33actors we like to tell stories with other people yeah more like a relay race then pretty technical isn't it a
04:40show like this it's all yeah I'm not saying bigger things that's boring no we're not we're not saying
04:46that never but if I were to rephrase that and so say there's some down times isn't it it's a lot of
04:51downtime I've got my book yeah I was yeah what my duolingo app on the go oh yeah what you're
04:54French are you yes don't ask me anything that's exactly what's going to ask you you want to say
05:00a virtual lingo to lose you unless the my family fancy so doctor who's fantastic for you know your
05:07career but also be a French yeah that's good I can say jimapel stephane very good songs a beat
05:14lim la maison you live in a house I live in a fantastic that's good that's that's all I've got
05:20and there's another new face on the unit set a new but somehow familiar face as unleash revealed
05:31earlier in the series award-winning actor Lenny rush was due to voice baby Eric in space babies
05:37and so he came along to our read-through he'd be so good as a space baby voice that that read-through
05:46we kind of sat there went it's a shame it's a shame it's just a voice and we're not gonna actually see
05:50Lenny so this chance came along to cast a new scientific advisor and I was like oh my god
05:54let's get Lenny who are you Morris Gibbons next scientific advisor thank you very much now
06:01Lenny last time we met on a set of doctor who yeah there was a green slimy sludge everywhere
06:07it's not bogies this time you're a bit more well turned out less bogies so he had complete opposite
06:13are you feeling about that yeah I mean I'm happy because it's only gonna be a voice part and now
06:18I'm properly in the show I'm very excited that Lenny is why you are the king of taking notes so you know
06:28when they said allison we want you to come back yeah but but you know but for you to come back
06:32it means that you can't you're not gonna be voicing that stuff you've already done how what was that
06:36emotional I was there what did you feel I think being in the show experience yeah mum told me in
06:43the worst particular ways come in and she said so tell me about your new character then in your your
06:59latest doctor who character he's more skippings and he's a genius yeah the complete opposite of me
07:07basically hi come on you've done that one before Lenny that's good like hey come on so you're a child
07:17genius who loves the old I could tell you what you've inspired me to go and get a set set oh actually
07:22don't do that too yeah yeah very hot dog in this middle yeah no sweaty isn't it yeah do your mates like
07:30doctor you you know when you when you because obviously at the moment we're filming this new can't tell
07:34anybody they're actually in it which is annoying yeah I think it's getting released I mean oh is it
07:40so then I can actually let everyone know yeah finally yeah I've got some I've got things that I
07:46like massive fans yeah so that'll be cool I'll be amazing yeah this thing is running way beyond
07:53maximum should we stop no way Lenny rush what was it like working with Lenny it's amazing working
08:01with Lenny I could he really puts you to shape it doesn't how good he is he's so good this is
08:08Morris Gibbons come on such a talented actors name anagram target probability of a truck 95% and rising
08:19yeah I just think it's funny having this child's like super genius advising one of the biggest
08:26governmental bodies in in the world I thought it was just so cool tensor with the segue that helps
08:35you get your own set so I had I have my own show way that I use yeah and now I've got one for the
08:41show they put all fancy lights on it they put laser guns is it so it's a little box you take it out yeah
08:50you can magnet the guns to them so it looks very cool Lenny absolute pleasure to see you again try not
08:56to be too much of a child genius in your real life you know because a lot of people are on one way
09:00long-time Whovians will know that Russell T Davies is the master of the teaser subplot a storyline that
09:17he will seed surreptitiously over many episodes with most of us not even noticing and then it will reach
09:24a climactic finale and viewers will turn around and be like how did I not notice that when Russell
09:30rebooted Doctor Who in 2005 the long game tease was bad wolf the big battle a phrase the companion Rose
09:39Tyler saw appearing throughout the series keep hearing those words everywhere we go bad wolf it even appeared in
09:46Welsh blithe droog bad wolf in the series finale the parting of the ways it turns out that bad wolf is Rose
09:55herself and that she's been sending herself warning messages through time and space I am the bad wolf I create
10:02myself I take the words I scatter them in time and space
10:16a message to leave myself here and throughout this series Russell's been at it again back in 2023 in the
10:25giggle Donna Noble asks Mel Bush Mel is this static or dynamic dynamic we're using triad we're using
10:32triad the first hint of the triad plotline unfolding now then in the church on Ruby Road look at the
10:39advert on the bus that Ruby gets off with her Christmas shopping he's a sneaky cheeky one is RTD
10:46but the biggest clue to the mystery beginning to unfold in the legend of Ruby Sunday is this person
10:52Susan triad played by the fabulously named Susan twist so come on then cross your heart or should I
11:00be hearts and hope to die how many of you noticed that Susan twist had appeared in every single episode
11:07of the series well the doctors cotton done I need your help everywhere I land a woman appears look but
11:16when exactly has Susan twist snuck onto our screens well she first appeared in wild blue yonder as Isaac
11:23Newton's housekeeper don't come back until you've had a very good idea sir cropped up as a Christmas heckler
11:30can you do gaudete in episode one of this series she was a comms officer in episode two a tea lady
11:38episode three an ambulance episode four a hiker in episode five she's Lindy's mum episode six she was a portrait
11:49with the final twist about Susan twist still to be revealed I sat down with Russell and Susan to get
11:57the lowdown on the highlights so far Russell suppose the obvious first question is to you which is where
12:05did the idea come from was it was a happy coincidence or was it a master plan it is not true that I can't
12:11but the name helped truth is I've known Susan for a long time I don't know Susan did I have to have to
12:18phone you up and explain this yes that was a bit mad wasn't it calling me and saying there's all these
12:26different people and I I was just listening and then I said um another are they aware of each other and
12:31you said no they're not they're all independent and separate did that evolve over time or in terms of
12:38like what the roles that Susan was doing it was when I first spoke to it didn't we hadn't written all of them so I
12:43didn't know what you were gonna do in every episode I didn't exactly know what the ending was I said we kept on
12:47saying you'd have a big part in episode at the end of all the characters we've had in you've played in the series if I
12:56was to push you Susan I don't like to push you but which one of my job which one which one which one I love the hiker
13:05hello there I'm being the hiker today we're on the beautiful cliffs just off Tempe last time I was
13:14Mrs. Miradou and I I don't know I'm sworn to see this I loved Susan Triad of course let's face it she's got the most lines
13:23she's the most well awesome yeah and the nicest frocks hi hello if I may say I think one of your
13:32favorite performances is the ambulance actually oh because that's actually one of those moments where
13:35you really get the genre combat detected patient acquired which then makes the rest of the series
13:41very interesting because because the doctor and Ruby very clearly see the ambulance yeah so from that
13:46which is great for me because then from that point onwards they're like going hold on have I seen you
13:49before right and yet you can't be an ambulance right far-flung planet what well the fans are
13:54definitely picking up on it already which is interesting they're starting to it's also a lot
13:58of people not noticing yeah they're all excited by Anita Dobson because at the same time there's a
14:02sleight of hand with Anita Dobson being overtly mysterious never seen a TARDIS before it's very
14:08much kind of internet age storytelling where I was that deliberate yes you just hope it'll generate content
14:14it's actually it's kind of proved to be very popular people are really taking off with it and
14:19I mean behind the scenes in our offices people are very interested in this Susan oh I love that
14:24storyline I mean it I love the part of it where she plays a different character every episode I just
14:29think that's such a clever thing to do because it's the character that you kind of go what she just
14:34say anyway who is that the Duke's late mother you spend the whole season being like who is this woman
14:40that keeps popping up she's definitely okay she's definitely your mum Ruby or she's definitely like
14:45she's you just get so many conspiracies and here's Russell to add to the mix it's also tapping into like
14:50a very old part of Doctor Who which is the doctor's granddaughter Seuss he once had a granddaughter
14:58on earth who went left him and played by Caroline Ford I mean that's a huge story that has barely
15:05been mentioned since she cropped up in the 20th anniversary story and it's now 41 years later and
15:11she still hasn't been seen or mentioned so I wanted to do a story with a tap right back into 1963
15:16if you've got a granddaughter that means you've got kids no not quite do you think Susan Dryad is her
15:23do you want it to be but at the end of the episode bad triad appears to nix that theory did you think I
15:33was family doctor or does she who is Susan Dryad really it's all to play for in the upcoming season finale
15:43still to come on Doctor Who unleashed I unmask the secrets of the death masks that looks good
15:58voila that looks really nice I discover how one of these turned this into this
16:05and spoilers we've got an exclusive clip from the season finale but first
16:13in the 60th anniversary special the giggle we were introduced to the Vlynx hello the Vlynx the robot
16:24that heads up units comms fast forward to this episode and we're back at a familiar looking unit
16:31but with one main difference that is the Vlynx the Vlynx has had a glow up nice upgrades hot metal
16:39doctor there's a real man in there he's really speaking and talking and moving he was like a
16:46robot octopus yeah I just wondered how he was able to do that for so long well let's go and ask him
16:52inside this AI tin can is actor Aidan Cook who's quite literally cooking Aidan it is possibly one of the
17:00hottest days of the year so far yeah it's the middle of year and you are in all black looking a bit like
17:07a ninja if you don't mind me saying yes yeah yeah and then being ensconced what's the word I know yeah
17:13stuck in there yeah be a tune and tuned is a good way into the yeah yeah yeah Aidan spends up to 12
17:22hours a day in his rubber and metal tomb the basic unit underneath all of that pipework is is a five mil
17:29wetsuit so I don't know if you've ever got into a wetsuit on a hot day yeah but the first thing you want to
17:35do when you get into a wetsuit is running to a cold sea yes unfortunately I don't have a cold sea to
17:39run into so I just sit there sweating he can't hear he can't see he can't speak he can't it's such
17:46a difficult job to do and he does it all day I don't know how he does it I can move my head
17:51my upper body a little bit in my arms and the rest of it is completely immobilized Aidan is no stranger
17:57to contorting his body for Doctor Who he's played a crooked man well hello again you old Romeo you
18:06a cyberman a mummy and a Zygon
18:13he's the most fabulous actor and the most patient man I have ever met in my entire life
18:24and he never complains and then comes in with his line perfectly analysis confirms life form
18:31although how he manages this is miraculous I'm not completely blind but I can't hear very well
18:39because I've got the phones and I can't see so when the director comes up to talk to me
18:43I have no idea he's there
18:47from the Absorbeloff to the Zygons the A to Z of Doctor Who villains and monsters is fast hurtling
19:00towards the 500 mark whatever far-flung part of the Hooniverse they've evolved from
19:05a large percentage of them share one common DNA trait prosthetics
19:10Susan Triad and Harriet Arbinger's bony-faced baddies are the latest to join this legion
19:17so for this episode's work experience I've come to Millennium FX to discover just how they make
19:23those ghastly death masks
19:24well Beth thank you very much for allowing me into is this your layer is that is that kind of
19:35space a little silicon space yeah these are all very cool but what are they and what are we doing
19:43so essentially we're going to be making a prosthetic for Susan Twist yeah so how did you end up in a place
19:49where you're making prosthetic masks for a living how does that happen I just really liked film and
19:55TV found it really interesting and kind of likes the behind-the-scenes aspect of it yeah and how
19:59you're able to make these types of monsters and creatures on TV I just found it fascinating and really
20:05wanted to get into it so juice is there a course how to make monster faces I did a degree which was
20:14really handy so you could kind of learn everything about okay type of industry yeah and then managed
20:21to kind of get stuck into work which was really exciting yeah yeah so this is our mold yeah Susan
20:27you can see that this is a face and this is basically a scan of her and then this has been sculpted on
20:33top of and it's created this kind of negative so that will end up flipping over and slotting into
20:38here so that's all right what happens next so the first thing before we even start throwing silicone
20:45into it yeah we've got to make sure the mold is released and make sure it's got capital stick on
20:49it is a cat or cap plastic cap cap okay yeah and you have this nice cap plastic edge so then it looks
20:57like it's part of her right so the cap plastic is kind of the first step I'll show you how to do it
21:02first right I'll put on the extraction just so there's health and safety and then now you probably
21:10can't hear it it's always that yeah so you just kind of want to do that and just spray it over in
21:16like a methodical day okay you want to give it a go nice and then you can turn it around you need to
21:25the bottom bit as well yeah the whole thing yeah perfect so the next step is silicone should be all
21:39good we're gonna pick this up and we're gonna give it a little bit of a rotation so you want
21:44that silicon to come round to the edges I'm just gonna pick this up and pop it in yeah because it's
21:49quite heavy so I have bolts in the back just because it makes it a little bit easier to try and pick
21:54it up so her face slots onto the mask which is drawn on the inside and her face is sitting on
22:02top of the drawing of the mask yes with the silicon and the cap in the middle yep the cast is left
22:08for 40 minutes to set then has a lick of powder to loosen it so I'm just swanging this everywhere okay
22:16yeah oh you get in there she is
22:20she's coming to life
22:22hey hey that looks good voila that looks really nice and then all of this excess flashing will end
22:32up being trimmed off to like a really nice kind of like half a centimeter and then it's ready to be
22:38placed on set but before it gets to set more masks are produced and skillfully painted to
22:47add deathly detail then Millennium FX is Rebecca Butterworth adds some grisly flourishes and finally
22:55it's time for Susan Triad to scare the living bejesus out of us all
22:59now I know I keep banging on about the sets on this show but they are amazing every time I
23:16sashay down this walkway I'm always seeing something new and immense oh look the space baby spaceship
23:23Aburod Studios a castarian creator an army encampment this place is paradise for Hwvians and for this
23:34episode the Hw crew have built another mind-bending set but this time added in camera VFX and to find out
23:43how welcome to the time window chamber the time window chamber is a great device that Uni has had secretly
23:52hidden away we've never seen unit traveling in time it's funny they've never invested in it and
23:57and we realized through a bit of dialogue the doctors always forbidden them okay do you have a time
24:01window what you expressly told us in the 1970s unit was absolutely forbidden to experiment with any form
24:07of time technology do you have a time window 10 floors down it's a means of looking into the past
24:13without traveling there by TARDIS for the doctor it's kind of crude this is wrong wow you have lashed
24:23this together the doctor might think this was lashed together but actually the time window chamber is one
24:28of the most complicated sets in the series the urge to pull one of those levers down is really really strong I
24:39I presume that time window would just be lots and lots of green screen and a snow machine as though
24:44that's easy but if it's such a good design team on the show that they kind of wanted to make it special
24:49so everyone thought they'd be standing against green screen and actually they're standing there
24:53amongst projections of Ruby Road with the church that's visible and the snow and the lamppost appears
24:59and so I think it's a it's a phenomenal piece of design the time window chamber comes in two parts
25:06a physical set built on stage six and a surrounding three-sided projection backdrop both dreamt up by
25:13production designer Phil Sims and his team Russell had written it was this huge space with huge technical
25:20bits of equipment that were projecting an illusion of the time the reason the images look the way they do
25:28is because they're being generated from the VHS tape a VH what video cassette recorders machines
25:35capable of recording television sound and pictures in the domestic and the industrial environment back in the 1980s when Kate Bush was
25:43first running up that hill you could record telly off one of the three available channels onto tapes the size of house bricks on many of the
25:51machines you'll be able to program the recorder to switch itself on and off to tape your favorite programs over the two weeks you're on
25:57holiday it was the future once when I saw a VHS tape in the script I had a rough idea and because of like the older films but I've never used one and I don't know how to use him
26:11that's the church and there's a couple of trees the key to it was that the VHS nature of the image quality it meant we didn't need really high res LED screens we didn't need to have pixel perfect background we could create a fairly low res looking background that was beautiful but could be ghostly
26:41the image needs to be overlapped and merge together to create one continuous image it's a bit like putting four monitors together on your desktop and have one big image across the four of them
26:48we did it we brought it back and having gone this far with the set what's the most doctor who thing you can do next blow it up
26:59okay rolling we're filming the big explosion scene today so this is the big pinnacle when everything charges up and all the screens are going to explode over the doctor so that's all we're just setting up for at the moment
27:11there's a little bit with Morris who's played by Lenny we're going to have some little pyro sparks and I'd let him design it on his desk wherever he wants but everything else is all going to be VFX
27:20there's one explosion up above there's one actually on my control panel and then there's a load at the bottom
27:28it'll be one two on the console number three will be on the floor and then four five with the top one
27:35fire in three two one
27:37one two one
27:47it scared the life out of me at first but I'm very excited and it looks very very good
27:55come on then time window chamber let's be having you
27:59one action
28:01three two one
28:03next time
28:15open fire all weapons
28:17you
28:31are
28:33you
