00:00I want to talk about San Diego now, because San Diego put pen to paper with a couple of guys,
00:05and this was buried on a day where trades were vast at the end of last week. San Diego re-signed
00:12Michael King. Michael King is back in a Padres uniform on a three-year, $75 million contract
00:18with San Diego. Player options in 27 and 28. So you've got a one plus one plus one deal,
00:25totaling three for 75. The other one they did was they brought in Sungman Song on a four-year,
00:32$15 million deal. This is a KBO utility piece, can play some second, can play some third,
00:39can bounce around a bit. It seemed like the numbers in the KBO were really strong. You had 26 homers
00:45and a 917 OPS. It didn't seem like the K rate was egregious either. This was an interesting day of
00:52Padre baseball at the tail end of last week. No doubt. Well, first of all, I'm just not going
00:58to believe any financial reports about the Padres at this point, and just teams in general. You get
01:03all these, you get this and that, you know, they don't want to spend whatever, and then someone,
01:06they change their mind. Owners change their mind all the time, and I know it's a little bit more
01:10complicated in San Diego, but it still always boils down to, these are all billionaires, and like,
01:16I can promise you they don't need to downsize one of their homes if they do want to sign Michael
01:21King. So, sometimes they change their mind, say, screw it, let's go for it, and that's exactly
01:27what happened yet again. I also think they took advantage of a situation where I think King
01:31was happy to come back and likes pitching there, and I don't know if anybody else was going to give
01:36King opt-outs at each year, because this gives King the opportunity to maximize his earning potential,
01:42and honestly, it's a very aggressive, like, risky contract for the Padres, because if King continues
01:47to get hurt, he can just pick up the player option and hold them hostage for multiple years.
01:51But, I love it. Not my risk. Don't care. Go for it all. You might as well keep doing it if you're
01:56A.J. Prowler. I don't know if I want to, do you want to stay on King? Because I also, you know,
02:01I think the other signing is slam dunk, no-brainer, love it. I just want to stay on King for a moment
02:07more, because even if you do get hampered with, let's call it two years and $50 million on Michael
02:14King, if he's hurt again this year, and it's like, okay, 27 to watch, 28 to watch. Number one, we don't know
02:18how much baseball we're going to get in 2027, and part of that lies on the Players Association. So,
02:23we'll see what that 27 number looks like, but I think Michael King is looking at this saying, okay,
02:28do I take two for 50, or do I opt out after this year? There are so many simulations where he just
02:34opts out, and he hits the open market, and he gets $100 million. The other thing is, if you're
02:39hampered with this, I think San Diego, like, it's a tough pill to swallow, but I think they're okay
02:44swallowing it, because what they've gotten from him is this steadying force when he's been on the
02:49mound for them. Two years in a Padres uniform, it's been 250 innings in a 3-1 ERA. He's been one of the
02:56better pitchers in Major League Baseball since the start of the 24th season, when he's been on the
03:00mound. So, I think they're okay taking that on, but we do have about 90 seconds of this segment. I want to
03:06pivot to San, because this, you're right, like slam dunk, it makes perfect sense for a team whose bench
03:12was, not sugarcoating it, awful last year. Next level, terrible. Their bench got better.
03:19Well, and I like him a lot. Like, it's going to be a question to see how he can handle the secondaries,
03:23big league secondaries, but what I like is, you have the floor, I think, of a guy that can move all
03:27over the infield. He can play third. He can play second. He can play first. But on the other side of it,
03:32he flashed above average pop. He's the only hitter to take Cody Ponce, you know, the MVP, twice.
03:38He was the only player to do that. There you go, Peyton, with the tweet. And I think there's a lot to
03:44like here. If it all works out, he's an above average bat, and I think can fill that Jake Cronenworth
03:49role. If not, he's a solid bench piece, and you're not paying him a ton of money. And I do think that he
03:54makes Cronenworth expendable. It becomes a matter of, can you move that contract? But I think he can fill
03:59that Cronenworth role excellently. And if he does that, now you can go move a Jake Cronenworth, and you've got
04:06you've got a really solid piece here.
